Well it's all drawn on paper - 12 drawings for every second of film. This film was shot onto 35mm film using a traditional rostrum. Now I would scan the drawings and composite using AfterEffects. However to answer your question it was all hand animated using basic pencil and paper and no special software. Glad you enjoyed it

2:07 lol at the "happy slaves" in this scene. Because oppression and misogyny are fine when "those foreign people" do it, and only the Brits should be held to a moral standard, apparently. I'm all for calling out authority, but that should include the horrifying traditions of oppression & misogyny in Indian and African cultures.
Well of course I agree, but if you see this through an english speaking lens, it becomes more relevant to the world what the englishman did than to the other non-english speakers
This is a huge topic to be reduced into a very small film. It's important to discuss it. I'm a student animator, and we're always taught to strip back our films to the core message - it's both to make the most impactful, focused point and to actually make short films possible to make (budget and time wise). I think if they made the women in that shot seem sad and overworked, it would've confused the message, and it's not always possible to expand timelines to discuss more. I agree there's nuance to all social issues, but it can be hard to express every detail in such a short form
the first thing that come to mind from this. was that old soviet propaganda cartoon from american imperialism called The Millionaire. it also stars a bulldog. tho I have to say they got it pretty much right and what was propaganda back than is turned to be pretty much real in modern world. tho I dont know how that come to mind from this, the animation is very different style. guess its because there is bulldog doing stuff that bulldogs dont usually do.
Wow ! This film feels as viscerally powerful and relevant today as when it was made - with the growing recognition of how colonialism has screwed up - and is still screwing up - the environment, the climate, and millions of peoples lives.

A great film and the draughtsmanship is exquisite - but the history is a bit screwy.... Britain took to tea TO India, not from it. We fought a war with the Chinese to get our hands on living plants as opposed to dried leaves and having won it, took those plants to Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) and onto the rest of India where tea plantations now produce billions of dollars worth of trade for the whole sub-continent. The history of Empire is complex and you could easily parody Monty Python with "what have the British ever done for us"? - but it's still a beautiful film.

People are responsible for calling out their own cultures, which is exactly what Quinn did.
