  • This video shows how to gain access to the thermostat. Disclaimer. Im not responsible for injuries or deaths due to my advice in the video. Use the procedure for purging air bubbles from your coolant (google it) to see if your water pump is good. If you see a waterfall stream of coolant in your coolant reservoir during the purge procedure, your water pump is good and the thermostat is probably why your BMW is overheating.

For anyone who want to attempt this job:
    1) If your car has P128 code, usually it means the thermostat needs to be replaced. It's better to get a OBD reader and graph the coolant temperature. Mine rarely exceed 180F with the P128 code. After replacing the thermostat, it easily go into high 190F.
    2) You can access the thermostat as shown in the video. Or you can make your life easier by taking the horizontal bar out and pull the fan out (You can find UA-cam video on that). With the fan out, it's easier to unclip and pull the coolant connector at the bottom of the radiator to drain most of the coolant. Then you can unclip and yank the big hose off the radiator. The other end of that connects to the thermostat.
    3) Put the x5 on a ramp, or jack the front up safely. From the bottom, locate the two bolts holding the thermostat and remove them. Note that you don't want to loose the water pump bolts because those are one time use bolts. Of course feel free to replace the waterpump at the same time if you want.
    4) You will need a long 1/4 inch or 5/8 with adapter extension, flexible head socket adaptor. Now locate the two hoses connected to the thermostat that's held on by clams. You need to unscrew those and pull them off the thermostat. At that point, the thermostat can be pulled to the fan space from above. The last connection can be uncliped and taken off easily. Oh, the last connector is the biggest hose, the other end is already off the radiator anyways.
    5) just be careful to reinstall everything in the reverse order and you will be all good.
Took me just a bit more than two hours to replace the thermostat. I am not touch the waterpump. Fingers crossed. That damn pump is like $350 a piece. My car already have more than 150K miles. Not sure it's worth fixing it much longer. Just keep kicking the can down the road.

Do u need a gasket also when replacing the thermostat?

No. I didnt need one because its not a traditional thermostat. Its more like a heart with hoses and nipples or connections rather than the traditional kind of thermostat

From your knowledge, are the engines from the X5 and the X3 similar?

    • @rickyadames7714

A quick google search result shows that both engines are (inline 6) 3.0 Liter engines. The procedure should be the exact same for the thermostat and water pump. remember to turn the steering wheel to get it out or u wont be able to.. third row seating and extra cargo space looks like the only difference that i can see. Remove the bottom covers and you should be able to see the thermostat and the water pump attached to it. To change the waterpump, Ive seen another video that says you need to remove this pain in the *ss bolt using a very long extension and piece of paper towel stuffed in a socket. but after much frustrating manipulation I was able to get the water pump out without removing the hard to get to bolts that hold a small metal tube in place

I don't think you should put wood between jack and car just put the jacks on the jack points.

You can skip the wood but since the jack points are plastic, the high pressure of the small surface area of metal from the jack can break the plastic jack point on your bmw

You are both right. My concern with using the wood is the length he has protruding outward from the vehicle. That can hurt someone and will shift and fall with not much pressure.

@@bertillemaloney true. Its always good to have multiple jack points. Dying underneath a car is not cool

If the wood is solid, it is fine. Been doing that for 24 years. Just do not use old or weak wood.
