Happy to say that Gerard has not only gotten better as a vocalist (not only clean, but unclean: listen to his death growl guest spot on Ibaraki and any of his Reunion Tour performances where he screams), but hasn't lost his energy at all! The songs being lowered half-step down for the majority (I think Bulletproof Heart (or I guess 'Trans Am' now) is still played in its original tuning, which is Eb anyway) helped quite a bit I also love that he now does all his sound FX/vocal effects work from his own little console on his mic-stand now! it's so cool to see him fucking around with buttons and moving knobs and stuff and messing with his sound in real-time
I got a challenge for you.... I would like to see you do vocal tutorials for the 3 Dance Gavin Dance vocalists Jonny Craig's raspy RNB voice Kurt Travis' smooth funk style and Tilian Pearson's heavenly high range A video per vocalist would be awesome.
In Japan I did karaoke in front of everyone and I did Na Na Na in front of everyone. They didn’t understand shit but they still clapped even when they looked ready to kill themself.
A lot of all time low vocal stuff is actually pretty similar to this but more from the nasal cavity. Correct me if I'm wrong, I'm not a singer. It just seems similar to me.
More advice on how to sing like them: 1. Be born an extremely high tenor. 2. Buy an acoustic guitar and learn how to sing in key. 3. Yell at the top of your lungs while singing and add a lot of diphthongs. (What I'm basically saying is that unless you're a tenor, give up trying to sound like them because its not going to happen.)
Yes. They wont be "INTENSE" though. You still wont be singing "like Gerard Way." And if you watch interviews with Gerard, he's said many times that he struggles to hit a lot of notes live. He's constantly pushing his voice as far as he can go, and he's basically as high as they come. If you're a baritone, there's no way you could keep up with that.
Be Born an extremely high tenor? Way is NOT an extremely high tenor. He's just Tenor. Nothing unusual about his range he's no Mike Patton or Jeff Buckley. Most tenors you hear on radio have approximately the same range as he does. I don't know his exact range but i assure you there is nothing extreme about it. Regarding not being able to well... sound like him is a poor choice of words, let's say being able to sing his songs would be more appropriate. It IS actually possible to sing that. I am a baritone originally and it took years of practice but i surpass his range both on bottom and top. To be fair even when i just began and was just more likely shouting rather than properly singing but i could cover most of his songs anyhow. Also keep in mind that singing range and screaming are 2 different things, being able to sing high is what i consider singing range use of vocal fry etc is a totally different story. His overall vocal range is about 4 octaves, plenty of singers with this range. Anyway i hope it was informative for you. And don't discourage baritone voices from growing as singers with false information.
Olivia Johnson but Brendon also has a vocal range of 4, nearly 5 octaves which is unusual and he's a tenor too (even tho with this vocal range he can go very deep too)
Doug Z would you say he has proper vocal technique? Or is the way he hits high notes and singing is that hard on his voice. Do you think his voice was fatigued after concerts?
An interesting voice to try and do would be Tyler Joseph because from what I’ve seen he has very unique vocals and I think seeing someone explain it as vividly as you do would be very helpful. Unless you’ve done it already then ok my bad.
Do you have any tips on getting out of your "head voice"? one of my worst habits as a singer is not singing from my chest enough when i go for high notes.
Gerard Slay what i did a lot when i started singing was a i just belted out as high as i could (even if it sounded bad) and i started doing the same exercise doug showed in this video. i did it for months and months and then i ended up with a good vocal range and i could hit a lot of high notes and not sound as rough. hope it helps!
I think people dont hear the Gerard because his voice sounds extremely similar to Vic's and not that similar to Gee's but if his voice was closer to Gee's, it would show what the techniques do more.
I'm actually really lucky. I have almost the exact vocal range as Gerard. I can hit the lowest parts of Helena and highest that I think he's hit before
Awesome video Doug! Quick question, at 8:45 when you belted the last couple notes of the phrase you put your fingers on your chin; why is this? Just curious! Thanks!
Hey Andrew! One of the things I've worked on in the last 6 months is opening my jaw more to get a lot more resonance and a bigger tone. I used to sing with a closed jaw and from practicing the scales like this it just feels natural when I sit down since it gives my brain the message that I need to open up!
Hey doug, I have a question, I really don't like my voice, and I don't sing that well, so can you give some advice on how to iprove that, cause when I sing like this I don't think I'm that bad, but then I record myself and ouch. So can you give me some advice pls?
I like hearing these tips from someone that sings the same genre as I am :) Singing Success is cool, but I just can't relate to the people making the tutorials. My cd's are still collecting dust haha. Thanks man!
man! I started on Singing Success! No hate for the program but it would definitely never work for a voice like mine (very soft and without a natural loud tone).
I do vocal lessons once every two weeks from really good vocal teachers, then just practice what they show me for a couple weeks and book another lesson when I'm ready
Lmao I'm trying to start an emo band that's not even a thing yet. I've been told I'm a pretty good singer. But this. This is intresting to do around my cats. They're just like wow never heard that noise before.
Open your mouth/voice up, embrace a 'crying' attitude, make sure you have good breath support so you can afford to do what Gerard does in the studio tracks. Annnnd, if you don't sound like a Christmas elf that smokes cigarettes like Gerard does, that's okay, find and embrace your own sound :)
Well it's hard for Gerard to sing like that since he is running around and doing... Gerard things.
Ya like kissing Frankie for 0 reason then saying it was to get back at him which I MAY wanna know what Frankie did to HIM ;)
Gerard things is best things
and frerad things
And getting hit in the face with franks guitar.
"Gerard things" omg 😂😂
How to sing like Gerard Way: You can't, he's Gerard Way
True
End of video. Lol. You sound like you would post a video just to say that one thing.
Gabby Iero exactly!
He just sounds like a rip off Billy Corgan tho
But remember
He's not a psycho, he just like psychotic things.
Y'all he's not trying to sound like Gerard he's just trying to show how to sing high notes in the Gerard way
its 1am and i totally cant sing
Ewa lol same
Ewa same
It’s 1am right now
Same
Sameeeeee
What he's describing is legit. This is how you train for opera. The placement is different but the concept and technique are the same. Nice video.
Thanks! 100% correct, just applying it to a contemporary style
oh yeah 100%!! I used too sing opera and I think this totally helped me be able too find a way too sing really similar too Gerard!
How to sing like Gerard Way : There is no Way.
JustKripxen Haha! Love that! 🖤
Well, technically there’s two ways
There is the Gerard way
there's actually 2, there's Gee and Moikey
Gerard is a God. This, this is sorcery.
Lol 😂
too*
lol in This is Sorcery 🤣
You kinda sound like vic Fuentes
i literally mumbled that to myself
When he sang tensed and distorted I was literally like “that reminds me of ptv a little”
OMG YOU REALLY DID WHAT I REQUESTED!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! ^^
;)
Bring Me The Chemical Romance I love you
I HAVE WAITED SO LONG FOR THIS BLESS
Thanks!
Doug Z . you are the best.♡
Tbh that didn’t sound much like Gee. In a good way, Gerard’s voice is unique
Gerard didn't hit those notes live almost never cause Frankie's tongue was in the way....
that jøshler skeletøn ayyyyyyy Frerard fren ;D
that jøshler skeletøn MY MOUTH JUST WENT WIDE OPEN AND MY MOUTH DROPPED. THEN I GO, "FRERARD! PROJEKT REVOLUTION FRERARD!"
FRERARD WAS REAL AND THE GOVERNMENT KNOWS IT
YES YES YES YES
Hahahahahahahaha
Woah woah woah woah woah woah woah

Yeah, to this day- he's only gotten better
I should probably learn how to sing before I watch videos like this.
And now: How to sing like Brendon Urie!
I got a challenge for you....
I would like to see you do vocal tutorials for the 3 Dance Gavin Dance vocalists
Jonny Craig's raspy RNB voice
Kurt Travis' smooth funk style
and Tilian Pearson's heavenly high range
A video per vocalist would be awesome.
In Japan I did karaoke in front of everyone and I did Na Na Na in front of everyone. They didn’t understand shit but they still clapped even when they looked ready to kill themself.
I love you for that your a cool person
lol I can't even hit low notes . Doug can u do billie joe Armstrong or Alex Gaskarth from All time low :))
I'd have to hear your voice to know what is going on
projectmusic yes @Doug Z please do Alex Garskath from All time low please :)
Love ATL
Reparable
A lot of all time low vocal stuff is actually pretty similar to this but more from the nasal cavity. Correct me if I'm wrong, I'm not a singer. It just seems similar to me.

A baritone voice can still hit the same pitches as a singer like Gerard Way- but they will likely not have the same bright quality in the higher range

skaterwithaboard I'm pretty sure Brendon Urie can sing higher if you've ever heard his music

I noticed Gerard barely ever hits those notes when he sings live
Nice Shirt Yeah to be fair this is true, he runs around a lot but if he sang with less tension it would be easier for him
Nice Shirt it's very surprising how hard it is to sing live. Even harder when you're as energenic as Gee
Nice Shirt it’s because he has a softer voice he DOSENT have such a loud voice
It's because he runs around and sometimes is screaming so
Doug Z would you say he has proper vocal technique? Or is the way he hits high notes and singing is that hard on his voice. Do you think his voice was fatigued after concerts?
An interesting voice to try and do would be Tyler Joseph because from what I’ve seen he has very unique vocals and I think seeing someone explain it as vividly as you do would be very helpful. Unless you’ve done it already then ok my bad.
Really usefull! And i feel way more confident now! Thank you!
I'm really glad. Practice hard:)
Do you have any tips on getting out of your "head voice"? one of my worst habits as a singer is not singing from my chest enough when i go for high notes.

I still don't understand what I'm suppose to do.
Me: sees Gerard Way my idol
My brain: CLICK
To Be honest you sound nothing like Gerard way to me, you sound more like vic fuentes
Yeaj
exactly what i thought.
He’s got a way different voice yes but his technique is the same.
Obviously not, because it's very hard to existist another voice like other person (sorry for my bad English I hope you understand)
And he kinda look the same too
I noticed such a difference trying this myself
I'm really glad!
I think people dont hear the Gerard because his voice sounds extremely similar to Vic's and not that similar to Gee's but if his voice was closer to Gee's, it would show what the techniques do more.
But I wanna know how to scream like Gerard
I figured it out after learning how to properly do screamo first and then over a year of trying to match songs off of Bullets.
Bro, i NEED a disenchanted cover from you - i don't love you would be great too, just do it!.
I Saw gerard Way And I Was like Okay Okay
Gerard is actually a treble.. Jesus Christ I love him
Nobody sings like my father does.
I found Gerard to have a great "broadway" voice, it's almost made for theater.
yeah it’s almost like he actually took theatre or something 😳
I already got gerard's tone 😎
Dude What's your band! would be awesome to come and watch you live in Sydney!
LuvFATAL Yo! Just got my first EP back so I'll be launching the "band" very soon! I'm stoked to have you interested as a fan!
Your voice man...Amazing.
Thank you
I'm actually really lucky. I have almost the exact vocal range as Gerard. I can hit the lowest parts of Helena and highest that I think he's hit before
Awesome!
Yes. This felt right! When I sing along to bands like Bilmuri, and my throat gets fatigued... I’ll try this more operatic method.
Hey Doug, loved the video. I was wondering if you could do a tutorial on how to sing like Billie Joe of Green Day. Thanks!
The hardest part is finding a space to make stupid noises to figure out how to get it to work lmao
true as hell lol
I searched how to sing, suddenly this showes up. I can't escape
Thank u justt helped add an octave to myy vocal range.. tnx😊😚
I can sing high notes but I will never sound or sing high notes like Gerard Way! I just got to accept it.
How to sing like Jared Leto! :'3
Manuel Vega mcr fans: EXCUSE ME!

Thanks a lot dude, keep it going👌👌👌
Oh my gosh you have no idea how long I've been looking for a video like this
Retitle this video: Hot to sing intense high notes the Gerard way.
I used to sing with a closed jaw and from practicing the scales like this it just feels natural when I sit down since it gives my brain the message that I need to open up!
yess maan thank you!
No problem man ;)
You sound like Vic Fuentes-
This video got me into singing, thanks.
Yo dude this is perfect, thanks!
No problem!
Dude you got that vic vibe in your voice I'm meltingggg
It's nice, but
How you make mixed vocal? You will make video about it?
(Sorry for my English)
I've decided to ignore all laws of probability and sing in Gerard's range even though I sing as a Bass
Too bad no one could sing like Gerard
Yes
Thank u my D5 was so hard to hit before for some reason
No problem, D5 is where there is another vocal break, often called the passagio. It's hard to smooth out that note.
That explains a lot. But seriously love this video i watch it everyday after ive done my warm ups :D
Thanks a lot!
You sound so much like Vic Fuentes 😍
Fucking loveee itttt
Hey doug, I have a question, I really don't like my voice, and I don't sing that well, so can you give some advice on how to iprove that, cause when I sing like this I don't think I'm that bad, but then I record myself and ouch. So can you give me some advice pls?
hey! My only real piece of advice is to keep recording yourself over and over again until your ears get adjusted to what you really sound like!
This was extremely helpful what the actual fuck
Wow thank you so much its working my voice impressions
Descobri q eu tenho a mesma extensão vocal do gerard TURUBOM?
sounds like Vic Fuentes ackkk.hope all
I will broke my Neck just to get best rock voice so I can reach high note when i Sing Mcr song😊
Could you do Brendon Urie?
bert is probably the best vocalist of the 00's
I cannot do this i do not think i can i’m in pain ah
I like hearing these tips from someone that sings the same genre as I am :)
Singing Success is cool, but I just can't relate to the people making the tutorials.
My cd's are still collecting dust haha.
Thanks man!
man! I started on Singing Success! No hate for the program but it would definitely never work for a voice like mine (very soft and without a natural loud tone).
So how do you mainly learn and practice these days? References, or just picking up things by practicing on your own?
I do vocal lessons once every two weeks from really good vocal teachers, then just practice what they show me for a couple weeks and book another lesson when I'm ready
Oh alright, I need to start doing this.
Invest in my voice.
Oh, and are the vocal lessons in person or from the computer?
I wish I had a higher voice, i have too fucking deep voice to even hit low notes
in the class
Can I ask for some advice singing the high sections of the Chorus of “Helena”? I’m decent up to that part then I feel like I’m dying lol
Yeah, I offer Skype lessons just go to my website www.dougzed.com
I actually can sing high note but it doesn't sound really good, it's like i can't control it or find balance.
I need sing like axel rose master doug....would u mind? Thanks
Gee sound not flowing like that Way, he just making great high note w/o vibrant or else
Imagine Gerard singing pop music
Actually he's doing that right now
He always have made that. MCR was a pop-rock and pop-punk band. And Danger Days was so Poppy. Actually he sings pop too.
dangerdays was NOT pop.
0:50 my dirty ass mind thought he was moaning
Lmao I'm trying to start an emo band that's not even a thing yet. I've been told I'm a pretty good singer. But this. This is intresting to do around my cats. They're just like wow never heard that noise before.
Cyanide Eyes just wondering did you start your band? i could check it out lmao
I find it hard to follow the notes in three cheers, maybe tho cuz my voice isnt that high
A video about Bert McCracken would be cool to see. Love your videos!
You sound like Doug Zed....oh It's you
Craaazy talented just saying
4:57 He said "Hola"? Haha
DID YOU MENTION BERTTTTTTTTT
I was literally just thinking I wonder if Doug Z has done how to sing like Gerard Way...and here I am 🙂
That solo voice
Open your mouth/voice up, embrace a 'crying' attitude, make sure you have good breath support so you can afford to do what Gerard does in the studio tracks.
Annnnd, if you don't sound like a Christmas elf that smokes cigarettes like Gerard does, that's okay, find and embrace your own sound :)
I can hit gerard's high notes but not low notes oops
i low-key don't get what u mean. like idk if my voice is floating or not lol
My voice is really low but my fav genre is pop punk. Any tips?
write songs that work for your voice
Don't you mean Panic! At The Disco (or Brendon Urie)?
Could u do Billie Joe Armstrong or Kurt Cobain at all?
he is so cute
not even close !
