You need to experiment with color mixing, first establish what kind of palette you want....example- a primary or secondary palette..
      Secondary is much better...
No one can mix the same colors as another painter....
It is the beginners very first- basic foundation to accomplish..
As a beginner one must establish their palette....become familiar with color mixing and basics of color theory...and practice to find your "signature brushstrokes " ..
If there's 20 painters all using same supplies, paints and exact same scene sketched on canvas....every piece in the end will appear different, even following an instructor- all going through step by step- following along with instructor- color mixing , block in and so on...
Of those 20 painters- in the end there will be that one piece that stands out from the rest ....
It's the painters ability to see and mix color along with their signature brushstrokes that makes their work stand out from the rest....
Beginners think while learning think of it as your practicing (just like handwriting) the more you do, and experiment with brush marks, manipulation, along with your brushwork - it will become as second nature ....your writing on a surface using paint ....with your brushstrokes and color mixing abilities to tell a story.....one must establish their own signature brushstrokes.....and ability to mix colors ...
Many take workshops spending money, wasting time traveling from one workshop to another- loosing valuable time- time learning on your own....you can listen to lecture on color theory, composition- however, it's each individual that teaches yourself....
This is one reason as a landscape, seascape painter to write in plein air- to learn to see....learn how to develop your composition, understand color in nature.....doing studies like this painter does all the time- then bring study to studio and rewrite it completing the final piece....is the best learning one can accomplish.....
Also, having the Carlson's landscape book, Edgar Payne's composition book and Helen Van wyk on color...
Three best books for all landscape, seascape painters, and will always reference back to them....
Understanding everything within these 3 books- along with establishing your signature brushstrokes and color mixing- one will be at this level- where it becomes second nature ...and writing is a never ending learning journey......Helen Van Wyk book on color is best to understand color theory, how to choose palette, understanding the colors- and gives one a guide to understand what colors mix to make that- along with learning about what colors will not achieve the color- due to color bias....
Have fun to all who is learning, and on their journey. ....

You're one of the few, rare painters I appreciate for explaining clearly their process as well as logic behind colour mixing. Not too many are as well organized as you, or capable of expressing their process and reasoning in such a concise and clear manner. I'm a fairy new sub, and have quickly become an unconditional fan of your work, and pleasant, approachable manner of presentation. Thank you so much for sharing your plein air painting experience. And not to forget the videographer behind the scenes ! He does such a fantastic work !
If I could suggest something, perhaps talk about translating values (from B&W or grisaille) into appropriate colours, I mean achieving the proper values with the colours.

It is wonderful to see another brilliantly chosen landscape scene. This is very serene and tranquil scenery inclusive of sheep. I am really loving the whole process of this landscape and am pleased to see you attempt to include some sheep, which cleverly adds to the beauty of this wonderful painting. The fact that the weather is superb to, helps to reinforce the lights and darks. Also helps with production of a great tutorial video. Your Plien Air skills are amazing to watch. Thank you both for taking me through this lovely and enjoyable landscape scenery. Wishing you both well. And Until next time, take care.

Clare, this painting is an absolutely lovely success...every bit as lovely as the weather cooperating for you, enabling such a beautiful result. Everything started to come together beautifully when you first put the clouds in. I kept hoping you would paint the sheep and not worry about them performing on cue. Yes, there is so much in the real life scene you have selected. I thought the only way you could do it justice was if you went home and brought back a much, much larger canvas: but, I was wrong. You have truly achieved the impossible in what seemed to be such a calm, effortless process. I LOVE this PAINTING! It is idealyc; you have captured a soul soothing moment in time, that was an heavenly experience discovered right here on earth. Now that I know for sure where to find an afternoon of gloriously warm and breezy pastoral beauty I will have to save up to come to the U.K. for a visit and hope for an opportunity to purchase this painting... or one like it. CLARE BOWEN, you are a very talented artist. I hope your Queen comes to your next exhibit. Once she has the chance to enjoy your paintings in person, the only difficulty in her purchasing will come when she tries to decide which paintings she likes best :-) I am sure she will agree with me: you are one of Britain's National Treasures. Your lovely works of art would feel at home in her home, and in one or two of England's most loved Museums. 💖🥰🙋‍♀️

Hello, I bought one of those paint garage after seeing you use one and have not had a chance to use it. Is that all the paint you take with you to paint plein air? Or do you have tubes in your kit? I really like your description of the scene and that your husband makes comments too.

Do you take the painting into the studio for working on the details? You missed the shadow under the left tree where the sheets are.

Hi Klaas I try to finish it as much as possible on location. It may not be obvious on the video but the tree in below a slope so you can’t see the base or shadow. Thanks, Clare
