  • As the West is caught in its own delusional moral hubris, chances to make peace between Russia and Ukraine are being missed again and again. The biggest obstacle at this point are the pervasive myths that the West is telling itself to justify pushing for war instead of contemplating real negotiations.
Nicolai Petro is a Professor of Political science at the University of Rhode Island and has published the wonderful work “The Tragedy of Ukraine: What Classical Greek Tragedy Can Teach Us About Conflict”.
He recently published a short essay entitled “Four Myths That are Preventing Peace in Ukraine”. We want to discuss that one and later also the changes in the military situation, which apparently is leading to a change in the western narrative about Russian capabilities.

The invasion started in 2011, when Russian ships moved into makeshift docks on the southeast coast of Crimea, 3 years before the referendum , that's illegal , and 8 years before Zelenskyy was even elected. They did it that way because the Crimean Bridge hadn't been built yet . This couldn't have been done without a corrupt Pro-Russian government in place , one that refused to join NATO. If NATO was pushing on Russian Borders, it had nothing to do with Ukraine at that time. After 2014, you can't blame Ukraine for changing their strategy. Having a Pro-Russian government in place in 2011 should have been good enough for Russia but it wasn't. They clearly weren't a neutral government as Russia would have you believe. Russia wants the sea , period , that's their motive .

    • @DomAtaGlance
      @DomAtaGlance 6 місяців тому +1

You misunderstand the label of defensive alliance. It is true that NATO has acted as an organization to offensively strike places like Yugoslavia. The dynamic of the alliance that makes it defensive is article 5 which is a defensive article. It states that I'm event of an attack on one country all others in the alliance are urged to come to that nations defence. Article 5 is the only portion of NATO that worries Putin or anyone. In that regard they fear the defensive portion of the alliance

But they were there since 2014. Find prof. Mearsheimer's ideas about it. He sais Ukraine was not in Nato de jure but it was a de facto NATO country with all the attributes, except probably the missiles along the Russian border.

It was the Western countries that pressured Zelensky to walk away from the dialogue table and the war has dragged on up to today. Now a lot of things have changed on the ground, a lot of solders and civilians have died on both sides. So yes Russia is very much reasonable to say that Ukraine must accept the new reality on the ground if they're ready to dialogue. Because I don't think Putin would accept to withdraw to 1991 borders including giving up Crimea just so to sit with sit with Zelensky on the table. This is all we - Ukrainians need to know about this proxy NATO vs Russia war:
Усе, що ми, українці, повинні знати про наших західних "союзників":
“Being an enemy of America is dangerous, being a friend of America is fatal.” - Henry Kissinger
    ***
    >>>I guess it was the 12th or 13th time to Kiev, and I was supposed to announce that there was another billion-dollar loan guarantee. I got a commitment from Poroshenko and from Yatsenyuk that they would take action against a state prosecutor, and they didn’t.
“So as they were walking out to the press conference, I said, nah, we aren’t going to give you the billion dollars. They said you have no authority, you are not the President. I said call him. I’m telling you, you are not getting the billion dollars.
“You are not getting the billion; I am leaving in six hours. If the prosecutor is not fired, you are not getting the money.
“Well, son of a bitch, he got fired.>If you put aside the immense human suffering and look at Ukraine’s war through the cold lens of international power politics, a clear picture emerges: the West is having a good war against Russia.
All NATO has to do is send Kyiv munitions, equipment and money, which, as any general knows, is the c h e a p e s t way to wage war.
    (...)
The lives are being given by the Ukrainians. They’re defending their nation but also, inadvertently, helping decide the Cold War.
For 70 years, NATO deterred a Moscow attack westwards. The Russians eventually invaded, last February, what they assumed would be a conquerable target on their south-western border.
The war that NATO long prepared for is finally being fought.

Democracy should not only be about procedures like voting and the freedom of the press. Results should be the grading cards of democracy.
Does that country enact policies that the people want? Or do they enact policies that only the rich and powerful want?
Does changing the government change fundamental policies, especially those pertaining to the economy, regulations of big corporations, public investment, education, housing, food security, wages, financial regulations etc., policies that deeply affect people's everyday lives.
Do the policies enacted result in sustainable (economic and environmental) growth that sees the standard of living improve for the majority of the people and they have better financial security?
Do these policies decrease wealth inequality?
Do the foreign policies enacted reflect fair and obey international regulations and laws and reduce conflicts instead of icnreasing and escalating them?
Do these foreign policies actually improve the strategic position of the country and thereby improve the security of the people at home? Does these policies improve relationships with other countries and increase trade while maintaining a healthy trade balance?
Do the press actually have freedom to dissent, measured by how one sided the narratives presented by the media? Does the government have direct and indirect control over what the media print?
Does the government use clandestine means to spy on its citizens? Do they use these means to persecute people who do not adhere to prevailing narratives?
Does the social and cultural zeitgeist allow dissenting opinions and narratives to be voiced without the person being "canceled"?
I am sure that we start measuring democracy in these ways, the US and most of the west will fail most of the criteria to be a democracy even if the people can vote. The funny part is that China clearly wins on most of the criteria and failed in some.

25:38 The problem with Ukraine ascending into the EU is that since nearly all EU members are NATO members, the NATO could be split, on paper, into an EU 'army' as part of the EU itself and a non EU part. Then in Ukraine, being part of the EU, NATO effectively will put its army there anyway.

    Pretty lame analysis.
Talking as if Putin just woke up one morgning and decided to invade this momolith know as Ukraine.
As if there was not a civil war in Ukraine dating back to 2014, as if the United States had not participated in overthrowig the Yanukovych Presidency, as if the US-backed Poroshenko coup government had not been conducting an ongoing war agaonst the Dombas and its ethnic Russian majority since 2014, as if Poroshenko had not killed almost 15,000 Dombas residents (probably with NATO weapons) because they people didn't recognize his illegitimate coup government, as if the governments of the Dombas did not beg Russia for help all along, as if Russia did not try peaceful resolution via the Minsk Accords.
Let's forget all that, and just proceed from the myth that Putin woke up one morning and invading the momolith Ukraine, not that there was a 8-year old Civil War with "Ukrainians" on both sides.
And how about some more myth that Crimeans "accepted" Russian citizenship like it was imposed on them. They voted in favor that, by 97%. And let's not mention that the Western Ukrainians think the Eastern Ukrainians are actually Russians, which is why the government in Kiev is killing them and talking away all their rights.

Ukraine in NATO without Crimea is an empty military shell. That was the mandate of the US to the Zeensky regime. Since 2015 they were draging their feet with implementing the Minsk 2 agreement. Rebuilding the Ukrainina military might. Their plan was simple. Build strong defensive line in the Donbas that could hold against the Russian army if they invaded to regain the Donbas. The collective west would then start a full scale economic war againsst Russia. The Ukrainian army would just have to hold the lines in the Donbas until the Russian econmy collapse and the Putin's regime capitulate and give back to the Kiiv regime all it's 1991 territories.
But the Russian army didn't follow that plan. The Dombas war was left to the Donbas militia with a helping hand of the Tchechens and the Wargner mercenarygroup. They disabled the Ukrainian Air Forcee infrastructure with massive missilies strikes and invade the eastern and northern regions where there was non defensive lines and the Ukrainian soldiers were insuficcient. They send two tanks column to personallythreathen the deciision makers in Kiiv. Nothing was going as NATO planned and the Zelensky regime wanted out of the game and tried to negociate peace. But it seems that Russia just wanted Crimea and neutrality and was ready to give up the Donbas in exchange. NATO than intervened with an offer that Zelensky couldn't refuse.
Does anyone knows what happened to the individual Ukrainians that were in the negociating team in Türkiye?

  • @22many77

Just a thought about the first two myths: if Putin had reasoned that, due to the steady buildup and 'Nato-ization' of Ukraine that he would be inevitably faced with either passively accepting Ukraine as Nato's fist aimed at the gut of Russia, or with the choice to intervene now before Article 5 was an issue, and; if he then intervened with full-scale war, it would be much harder for us to argue now - just because of the optics - that his interest all along was merely Nato encroachment, and not some ultranationalist imperial fever-dream of conquering Europe.

Russia attacked Ukraine. Thats all people know. Everything else is considered politics where im from. The clear propaganda: defensive weapons, defensive alliance, unprovoked invasion; is all accepted as fact. Glory to The Netherlands

In order to allow other nations to exist, you have to be a nationalist yourself. The instant you go beyond your national self-interest in actions abroad, you begin being an imperialist.
America could allow freedom for different propositions to compete precisely because it was based on a natural identity of whites.
    1) a nation based on race has to keep other races out;
    2) a country unified only by principles or Ideals or Wordism has to keep other IDEAS out.
You simply cannot have free speech in a country whose only unifying force is “dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.”
A multiracial state must be a propositional state, based on words rather than natural identity. Such a state cannot allow freedom of speech.
Any society based on a set of words rather than a common identity must eventually defend those words from heretics by force.
