  • Leyland Test Track Drone over Abandoned Circuit. Urbex Explore of Abandoned Place by Drone
The Leyland Test Track was mainly used to test trucks and busses by the Leyland Company. The test circuit was built in the late 1970s and opened in 1980.
The test track contained an oval for high speed testing, with a long straight for brake testing. It also had an infield circuit with a skid pan and several rumble strips.
The Leyland Test Track closed in 2005 and since then it's abandoned. Officially the track is not accessible, but there are several not official entrances. In 2017 a plan was given green light to demolish the old test track and build 960 new houses on the site.
I explored the track, and made this drone flight in the summer of 2018. It was exact a year after the plans for new houses were presented, so I think I was just in time. Besides this drone flight, I also explored the abandoned test circuit on foot.

Thanks for the Leyland Test Track video. I was the Vehicle Test Manager when the track was commissioned and for the first 4 years of its life. To be honest, it's shocking and heart-breaking to see buildings and special tracks that we commissioned and used extensively for making history on that track now just abandoned to dereliction. The thrill of driving 40 tonne artics, coaches and special vehicles on the 3 lane banking, then lining them up to do a crash stop on the quarter mile braking straight still makes me tingle 40 years later! Together with the state-of-the-art semi-anechoic chamber, dynamometers and rigs that could shake a vehicle to pieces the whole site was used to develop the most amazing vehicles. The test group were a gutsy skillful and brave bunch that deserved much more credit than they got. It was great to see TVR testing their Le Mans entries with speeds over 100 mph on a banking designed for just 70 mph - the transition from the short straights onto the banking look quite narrow at over 100 mph! And yes, the Belgian pave track did last more than 20 years. The steering pad with its special wettable surface now looks very sad! I couldn't get over how overgrown it now is - the ravages of 20 years of neglect! Still it's stirred up some great memories - thanks again. Martin Smith - martin@3in1devon.com

After the teasers I was really looking forward to this and wasn't disappointed! The drone is really going to add a new perspective to the exploration of these abandoned places, and I can't wait for more! =^.^=

why demolish and replace it with houses when should let nature claim back what it lost. interesting to see how fast tracks get claimed by nature

alas the sign of another well-known brand is gone forever, Leyland Trucks were good in the 1960's but with being dragged into the nationalised BL group they were underinvested in and time didn't wait for them.
When they released the Leyland Roadtrain/Roadrunner trucks they were looked upon as being ahead of their time but the alliance with DAF of holland was already on the cards, DAF took the best of both of their trucks and now the Leyland name can only be found in India where trucks are built under the Ashok Leyland brand, this test track also held some great rally events but looking on Google maps its now all gone, flattened to become another industrial estate. sad times.

Before or after it was left abandoned? Would be a fun site to spend the pause :)

Dat staat op mijn verlanglijstje. Alleen mag je daar niet vliegen, dus moet ik eerst toestemming vragen.
