AWD - Better launch, forgives more in corners, good re-acceleration, better for off road RWD - Better handling, lighter and faster than AWD in a straight line FWD - Cheaper to build, lighter and faster than AWD in a straight line There's a reason why all the best track cars are RWD
@@drunkcat687 FWD and RWD have les powertrain loss, in a straight line, after the start, the FWD/RWD will come after the AWD, like how a Civix Type R can get close with it's competitors even the AWD ones
RWD is also cheaper to build than AWD. FWD also isn't really much cheaper to build than RWD, but its packaging benefits that manufacturers love. A transverse inline four is very short, and with no transmission tunnel to the rear you get a flat floor which saves a bunch of space. You can also use a twist beam rear axle suspension, which doesn't work with RWD, saving more space and cost. FWD = maximum interior room for a given power.
+leotsun We can clearly see that you hate FWD because of the way you drove the FWD car, but that could be unintentional, I don't know, but FWD hatchbacks are known to be fun when you actually know how to drive.
LOL he literally stopped to like 10 MPH at some of the minor turns. Trash, I drift my FWD car on offramps all the time, then correct myself quickly before spinning in a 180
I am a FWD enthusiast, so I may be a bit biased, as far as I can tell, a skilled driver would have been able to lap the course faster in a FWD car than a RWD, if you exclude the launch. I admit, the launch is the FWD's weakness. But even including the launch, the FWD could catch up to the RWD given a long enough lap. The name of the game for FWD is smooth and controlled. You cannot control it like a RWD, it takes a different technique entirely. All in all, FWD are the easiest to drive slow, but the hardest to drive fast, but manage it, and they are a force to be reckoned with.
Awd doesn't magically make your tires more grippy Dumb Shit. Awd has more understeer. Not to mention plenty more weight. All awd does on paved roads is make use of all the extra grip that's not being used by the other two drive methods and it's only benefit is acceleration. The only time turning is in favor for awd is on dirt.
DaedalusTV if all are driven to it’s max AWD is the ultimate cornering machine. The second would be FWD because it can grip thru the corners as long as you hold down the throttle. And last is rwd because the best way to corner fast on rwd is drifting it out and thats not going to beat the other two
I think Gingium, you should perhaps re-do this again as it was back in December and i'd lime to think your driving has improved since then as the FWD Lap was just shocking
Interesting, but I've found that Forza and GT in particular give AWD too large of an advantage due to their somewhat less-than-perfect physics engines. There is a reason that the fastest (tarmac track) race cars on Earth are mid-engined, RWD. This of course changes when the surfaces have lower-traction, such as dirt, gravel, ice and snow and AWD lets you put more power down consistently.
I assume you're talking about that Nissan GT-R LM Prototype? It *is* indeed interesting, although technically it's AWD: the gas engine does drive only the front wheels, but it's got an KERS system that powers the rear wheels as well.... or at least it would were the system active for the actual race. It was disabled, and thus the car was down a lot of power and stuck in pure FWD resulting in it placing dead last in its class. Still... I suppose it is pretty cool from an engineering standpoint, it's a shame they couldn't use the system as-designed.
+trashmeign nope. i believe they are RWD because of regulations. High performance cars seriously struggle with traction, especially in slow corners they'll just keep spinning its rear tires. Look at the GTR, its AWD and its fast as hell. The reason why Ferraris and other aren't AWD is probably because that RWD is more driver-focused and fun, but for out-right speed, you can't beat AWD.
First off, good video Gingium, my next car is going to be a Porsche 911 convertible and was wondering if I should get the RWD Carrera or the AWD Carrera 4S?
FWD could have gone a lot better then this example. if you use the brakes to control your speed while staying on the gas and balances the two through out the corner, I think FWD would beat RWD. Balances is key for any of these, but especially FWD. It is all about shifting the weight to the front tires for more grip. But other wise, good video.
curious to find out the PI difference in these drivetrains. should make the PI the same and redo the race. I don't expect FWD to compete but RWD and AWD might be close.
well, if he keeps all upgrades and tuning stock or the same and just has different drivetrains then it is a fair race because he is only testing the drivetrain... if he had made the PI in each car the same, it would be flawed because the FWD would get an advantage because of upgrades and therefore would test more than just the drivetrain
This test would be more representative if you actually knew how to drive. That FWD lap was horribly botched. I guess the same sub-par performance on each would be kind of OK, but you know...a little more practice in FWD would've helped. Then again, even under ideal conditions, it was a foregone conclusion. AWD vs RWD could've been closer.
+grmasdfII I did 5 laps in every drive train which was more than enough time to get used it. The bad lap just shows that FWD is a bitch to drive. I'd like to see you do much better in 5 laps.
+nambinhvu I guess so. The point is that after 5 laps FWD was still hard to drive, meaning it was worse than the others. Diffuculty is part of what makes a certain drivetrain better or not
+Gingium I guess, but from watching it, it looked like all you had to do was wait a little longer before turning. All 3 have different styles of driving. If you treat them all the same, of course you'd have trouble. It's like using a bicycle's front tire brake while going down hill, you'd end up on your face. lol
Gingium And if you had focused on *your* perception and preferences in this video, that would've been cool and maybe of value for some people. You specificially focused on *performance* of each of them, though, with side by side video and lap times, which opens you up to criticism of improper driving, since this skews the comparison. That is the real issue people have here ;) As a general tip for FWD, brake late and long into the corner, let the FWD straighten out your line on exit. Another thing, "I'd like to see you do better" is a childish way to face criticism. I couldn't make a transformers movie, but I very well can criticise it's shitty story. You don't have to be better at something to spot someone elses faults. Might be infuriating, but it is a fact.
He wasnt using left foot braking on the fwd car. You have to use left foot braking in fwd to get maximum performance. Different drive trains require different techniques.
FACT - any fwd car requires the most tricky tuning for suspension. It’s super critical that sway bar , tire pressure , suspension and dampening all work in series not against each other. The biggest problem that fwd cars have is weak weight distribution and center of gravity. But the pro of that is more downforce on the tires that do all the handling vs a rwd the steering tires have less downforce. Fwd will always be for economic reasons and affordable builds. I won’t argue that a awd rally car wins day and night because Audi was the first to prove that. Like I said fwd is great for handling and not speed. Rwd and awd always will compete on paved tracks. They both get the job done just depends on weight/power ratio = grip.
I need to know how I can tell the difference between an AWD and a front wheel drive???? Does an AWD have a drive shaft yes or know or is there another way to tell the difference?

I usually test my cars since Forza Motorsport 1 on Maple Valley, the very short one. It's simple, short yet it contains pretty much all of the bends you can see in the game and thus makes your results consistent.
from my understanding FWD your meant to brake early power early (steer with the power), . RWD you brake late power late (use the brakes to steer). and AWD is kinda in the middle but tends to under steer. correct me if im wrong.
I have more experience with RWD, but I have gotten the hang of cornering with an integra. I turn through the corner and let off the throttle and slide, then I floor it once I see a clear path out of the turn.
In a real life I’ve had FWD and RWD I will say I like the Torque response on the rear the breaking is moderate and by far so far my personal favorite. FWD If the goal is to reduce speed loss then I gauge the upcoming turn and reduce the amount of breaking to little to none to minimize speed loss on tight corners if absolutely needed use the automatic transmission like a manual drop the gear down to 1-2 and get your speed down and then drop it into 1st rev up to redline and throw into 2nd and then drive immediately afterwards. This is how I do it if I’m driving in a very aggressive manner and needing to either chase someone or get away. Also if you have OD or overdrive turn it on I’ve heard people refer to it as a 5th gear when driving Keep in mind doing this will cause a lot of wear of your transmission and drivetrains so use your good judgement and know your car’s limitations.
as far as i know AWD for short cars to avoid understeer , RWD and FWD for long cars to avoid oversteer to avoid understeer on FWD , just release throtle when doing so and always Brake Early have Fun -_0
Regardless of all the criticism on your driving critique, your demonstration is not contradictory. People on here expect both cars to be driven with utmost effort as to one another, but realistically we can already see how it clearly shows the difference in physics... as to what it does to the driver/operator based on each drive train put to the test. The operation or demonstration was ethical.
Don't use brake too much before corner on FWD.. Just drop gear & press more on gas pedal while remember to keep the steering on right track. With more acceleration + force on front wheel tyre it will keep a good cornering and less time to complete it
i think normally FWD should not be more difficult to handle at the limit. it tends to understeer so its considered safer and more controllable than RWD, but not driftable and less fun. fwd is also the lightest of the three drive systems because it needs less parts.i still prefer awd especially with the vectoring of an evo or wrx.
I'm watching this two years later but i feel like even though your driving wasn't the greatest it makes sense. Different drive trains give different handling which makes the driver react different. it makes perfect sense if you really think about it
I saw this pop up on carthrottle and immediately got excited to see a comparison in action, but this wasn't what I was expecting. Although I do understand that this is a quick test just to see what drivetrain performs better,I felt like you lacked some of the important aspects of making a "somewhat" scientific experiment. First thing was that from what we can see, this was based upon one hot-lap. If you had based your results on multiple laps (like 3 or 4) using all 3 drivetrain types, I feel like the results would be a bit more accurate and detailed. Right now we're basing the results off of one set of data for each car, which may not be the most reliable thing. Then there's the driver errors. There was the driving line, then the braking while you were driving the FWD setup. Not to mention your ability to manage torque steer and understeer. Regardless of the driver errors, I feel like if you had more data, the results would of been more convincing. Anyway, stay minty fresh and practice them lines yo!
+MERC Films Im redoing this test and changing some things 1st of all, Im going to be using assists to limit driver error 2nd Im going to be using three different cars that have been upgraded and tuned to be as similar as possible (Civic Si, GT86, WRX STI) 3rd Im going to be doing it on a different track across multiple attempts. Am I missing anything? :)
Nah man, I'm looking forward to it! I like your decision to do the test with 3 different cars with their native drivetrains. For some cars I think it ruins the balance and makes it less efficient.
@Gingium Hey, I really hope you take this suggestion into consideration. First, I haven't played FM6, so I dont know if these options exist, but I know they do in FH2, so here's the suggestion. Redo this test, except enable traction control, stability control, assisted braking, and assisted steering. Doing this will remove a large majority of driver error and will give better, more accurate results! Hope to see a new, updated video soon! PS: Maybe next time, lower the volume of the vehicles, maybe add some music over it, and maybe disable audio for 2 of the 3 videos, the overlaying engine/tire audio is terrible, I had to mute the video, and play a song on iTunes to get through the video. :P
I was under the impression that RWD had poorer traction and the rear was more likely to kick out in them, more so than FWD. But in this video we saw the opposite and the FWD had poorer traction? Im confused
in reality if you push a FWD car too far when racing it will swing it's rear around like that because it's lighter rear is easier to get to unload and break loose in fast, tight turns like S-turns. watch track day crashes on nurburgring.
I have been an instructor at Road America since the early 1990s. You're right. You don't want to hear what I think of your driving lines.

what would be the proper way to drive each of the cars?

maybe with lower power sure, fwd is great for small light low horsepower race cars, but higher power not so much

People on here expect both cars to be driven with utmost effort as to one another, but realistically we can already see how it clearly shows the difference in physics... as to what it does to the driver/operator based on each drive train put to the test. The operation or demonstration was ethical.
I like your intro music, I'm a new subscriber. What song is that at the end?
Snoop Dogg Ft. Dr Dre - The Next Episode (Han Solo Remix)
you should do one where it is a hot lap, not only the launch
all that crackle .
snap "crackle" pop rice krispies
nicely done !
I have a quick question though so if a fwd car makes 200hp and so does a rwd would the rwd still be faster? I kniw it sounds stupid but i must know
why its only run on the flat road???
do the tests with lexus mid-size 2017 model suv's like lexux NX or RX..
finally i can listen to the car sounds in this game for once without voice
Don't use brake too much before corner on FWD.. Just drop gear & press more on gas pedal while remember to keep the steering on right track. With more acceleration + force on front wheel tyre it will keep a good cornering and less time to complete it
i think normally FWD should not be more difficult to handle at the limit. it tends to understeer so its considered safer and more controllable than RWD, but not driftable and less fun. fwd is also the lightest of the three drive systems because it needs less parts.i still prefer awd especially with the vectoring of an evo or wrx.
nice fwd technique, does it come in good?
I'm watching this two years later but i feel like even though your driving wasn't the greatest it makes sense. Different drive trains give different handling which makes the driver react different. it makes perfect sense if you really think about it
Why you brake so late only in FWD ?
And my idea for you is the track test of AWD Vs FWD Vs RWD with the GMC Yukon and Chevrolet Suburban
I may have just noticed. Your not exactly a good driver.
I have noticed your grammar is shit.
+madcomputersurfer no it's not
I have noticed you're a dumbass
Stephen Yount I've noticed that you didn't pay attention in school
+MERC Films Im redoing this test and changing some things
1st of all, Im going to be using assists to limit driver error
2nd Im going to be using three different cars that have been upgraded and tuned to be as similar as possible (Civic Si, GT86, WRX STI)
3rd Im going to be doing it on a different track across multiple attempts.
Am I missing anything? :)
Nah man, I'm looking forward to it! I like your decision to do the test with 3 different cars with their native drivetrains. For some cars I think it ruins the balance and makes it less efficient.
MERC Films Exactly! A Fiesta wasnt meant to have a RWD Drivetrain
Why did you take every corner at 10mph lol.. a lot more speed could have been taken especially with the AWD set-up
@Gingium
Hey, I really hope you take this suggestion into consideration.
aye, do this again but on monza?
You say your name so fast at the beginning of your videos! This time it sounded like "Jin-jee-man"
Can You Do The Cadillac Escalade Esv
This video proves he doesn't realize you need to drive a different line with a FWD car.
I think the best track set up are ones that are mid/rear engine and RWD
I was under the impression that RWD had poorer traction and the rear was more likely to kick out in them, more so than FWD. But in this video we saw the opposite and the FWD had poorer traction? Im confused
in reality if you push a FWD car too far when racing it will swing it's rear around like that because it's lighter rear is easier to get to unload and break loose in fast, tight turns like S-turns. watch track day crashes on nurburgring.
I cant hear it, i think someone is mowing their lawn outside. Damn, they must have one loud ass lawnmower
And a weedwacker out there too
