Airfix is definitely upping their game, and taking us along for the ride. Such a cool thing to witness.
they are indeed
Just started getting back into building Airfix again, after many years absence....ideal on those long winter night....great to be back and fantastic that Airfix are still around....Cheers and good luck for 2023.
And you my friend.. plenty of scale modelling content here on youtube

It’s an absolutely brilliant kit, am loving building it
Its fantastic kit matey
Thank you for posting this. Very interesting to see the design process
Glad you enjoyed it.. Thank you @stephenendersby5699 for leaving a comment. Please subscribe if you haven't as yet.. It really helps the channel grow.
Great, descriptive presentation. Nice to take this fine kit back to the design stages and to have first hand information from the designers. Good team.

Hello, I've watched this video about 5 times lol😳. On the premier for this video you may remember recommending an airbrush+compressor kit. I got it! Thank you so much for recommending it to me because I'm already having loads of fun with it!
It was the fengda 186k kit with compressor and airbrush btw and my pocket money is now at 0.0£
Excellent matey.. it’s a good starter kit.. have fun
Wow Chris is a WIZARD. I've built the Hellcat, wich is also his work and it was a great fun to work on!
Sure is!
Another great video! And a definite must have kit.
It really is! thanks for watching
I don't know how practical it would be, but one thing I would like to see on 1/48, 1/32, and 1/24 scale aircraft kits are metal landing gear struts, including tailwheel and weighted wheels with the tailwheel being pinned into place.
They did the presentation in a loading bay, hanging the projection screens on the door, resting their paperwork on a stack of shipping pallets! Admirably workmanlike, and indeed a fascinating presentation, thanks for capturing it in all its nerdy commercial glory. Question, are these kit designers generally degreed engineers? Just curious.
I occasionally check in on modeling forums and often am just gobsmacked by the unrealistic expectations people have of kit manufacturers. (Not that I’m totally innocent myself!) This video is very instructive along those lines.
I have said if a airfix produced a kit, boxed it in tamiya logos.. the kit would be heralded as a masterpiece!! People just hate for hates sake.. I believe designers have qualifications in their field...
Very enjoyable to see this. Makes you realise how much work goes into bringing us these models.

Airfix are definitely doing the Spitfire proud in the various scales, I’m impressed with the 1/48 scale Spitfires that Airfix are now selling but the only thing I would wish for is for them to scale them down to 1/72, the 1/72 market could do with a decent, and affordable, Mk.XII and Mk.XVIII.
I think your wish will come true lol
great video and cool info and process, have a great weekend my friend
Thanks, you too!
Great video and very insightful on the processes involved and a HUGE ! thanks for posting it.

Imagine how difficult this was back in the early sixties the creating the drawing and molds😊
Tell me about it
I enjoyed this presentation! I think AIRFIX is into something good with these large scale models! I been a modeler since 1970. Im interested in finding more about the creation of metal molds, where machinists of old would spend months welding, grinding, sanding and polishing those big chunks of steel to create a miniature plastic toy. Any links would be appreciated! Thanks and congrats on you new Spit!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Interesting video Mos!
Thanks!
A couple of questions I would have asked: WHY did they not realise that attaching the sprue gates to the outer face of the exhaust stubs was a bad idea (It obliterates the weld-seam detail & gives the builder a nightmare clean-up) and WHY did they mould the wheels & tyres without weight bulge and in two halves? Other manufacturers have now progressed in these areas to avoid these (old-school) approaches and yet in this respect, the new Spit just looks like a scaled-up 1/72...I do feel that a regular model builder would have realised & avoided these errors in what is an otherwise excellent designed kit. 😨 Great vid though, Mos. 👍🏻

I wonder how long it took him to design the entire thing in CAD. Massive job for one person!

Great informative and interesting video, but could be much better without the first few minutes of hands waving over the box
there are chapters.. you could jump to the meat...
the bit about no little man in the box, well, there's one on the cover art, so, think it would be reasonable to expect, to find on in the box too, there posing as fly model panorama, so you would expect someone flying it, not the could of blacked, that area, as a dark shadow or something?
Not necessarily... you see figures on tanks and armour on Tamiya models but you dont always get a figure in them kits either

Hey Guys: Long time Airfix modeler, fantastic vid on how these kits are made. One small question, in two parts. First, is there a way to "reconcile" or compare the original loft drawings that Chris uses, with the 3D scanning that Luke does? Secondly, do you think might show a difference from the original loft drawings, vs the actual builds? I seem to recall that a lot of Spitfire manufacturing was de-centralized in various workshops to avoid the "Blitz". As a guy who worked in aerospace manufacturing, I wondered, if you might see some process variation in the shape/form of actual aircraft, vs the theoretical of a drawing? Or should I just go have another beer? Cheers!
i guess they could do that and probably do :)

Pulling a LiDAR scan into parametric 3d CAD requires some intermediate software that can read point clouds (the scan output) and convert them to meshes. One must then import the mesh into CAD, establish sketch planes along a centerline intersecting the mesh, and then (pretty much manually) create smooth profile sketches. You really need at least a good 3-view drawing for this, and the more data the better. Lofted surfaces are then created between these profiles to make initial geometry. CAD doesn’t like meshes, so you need a good computer with a good graphics card. And plenty of patience. An anger-management class might be a big help, as well.
Drawings are *never never ever ever* 100% correct, even when they come from the factory. They are valuable but must be checked against other data. And no two airframes are alike, especially after a few years of service.
I write this as a CAD pro with a hobby of fanatically and obsessively modeling a specific Soviet aircraft, which might or might not become an actual product next year. My surface modeling techniques are all OJT and I’m not an engineer or kit designer, so take this with a grain of salt. (Injection mold design would more than double my workload, not to mention it’s far beyond my capabilities.) The aircraft being Soviet, and there being no examples in the US that I can observe up close, it’s necessary to rely on a combination of what I perceive as the best published drawings; thousands of walkaround photos; published works on the aircraft, some of which are not in English; and a LiDAR scan of not-awesome resolution. But it is tremendous fun for a nutball like me.
P.s., nice explanation in this other MOS video

It would be interesting to know what specific CAD program they are using. "Parametric" is a type of CAD program. Or is is PTC?

Seems they were using Rhino 3D for the initial surfacing then importing the files to a Parametric 3D package like Solidworks or PTC Creo etc. Rhino is a very powerful NURBS modeller but not parametric, and not well suited to final production CAD.
Binning the first resin prototype???? It should have gone to Corporate on display.

Interesting video. At 32:22 he was talking about something he uses to judge the size of parts on model (bit byro?? ) what is that. I know my pronunciation is wrong.
A Bic Biro.. a ball point Pen.. So what they do is have a picture of a bic biro to help them focus on scale.. Hope that helps :)

@@MOS6510Models Subbed! Awesome thank you. I never heard it called that before. Thats a great tip.
we had airfix spitfires in 1963,how many more do we want,?,the Airfix company does not exsist anymore. hornby are using the name so are to blame for the small range that is now available
There’s more in the range now than there was back in the 80’s..
Hope it's not a Humbrol 3D printer they've invested in 😂😂😂
Tamiya is far better
