- Airfix's new 1/24 scale Supermarine Spitfire Mk. IXc is finally here! I've been looking forward to this kit since seeing it at the Airfix Creators' Day back in the summer. Now it has arrived I thought I'd crack the box open and start building the cockpit. This is a huge kit and building, painting, and weathering it will take quite a few videos, so use the subscribe button to ensure you catch future updates!

I'm an old guy whose eyes won't let me model any more. I never liked building aircraft models because the achievable level of detail never measured up to the 1/24 and 1/25 car models I loved.
Modelers today may not know how fortunate they are to have aircraft models in such larger scale not to mention 1/16 scale armor models.
If I still had the eyes of my youth, scratchbuilding that warped bit of plumbing would have been an enjoyable challenge, not an annoying disappointment.
Ah well, I will model vicariously through you. Thanks for this series.

Can you not get yourself optovisers. They will improve eyesight 10 fold.
@@brianhurley6289 After two retinal detachments, surgery in the left eye was nearly a total failure, that in the right eye went better but the macula is a squished blur. I have to look slightly to one side of anything I want to look at to get any detail.
Getting old sucks, but it's not so bad considering the alternative.

I've just received my kit. A bit of a leap as I haven't bought an Airfix model since 1970! I do build Radio Controlled aircraft, so I'm really looking forward to the build. A great informative video. Many thanks. Doug

Clear parts are likely provided for the instrument panel in case you want to light it up or put decals behind the "glass" for added realism..

Except the IP wasn't lighted exactly. There was a movable red light on the IP but the instruments themselves had tritium painted on the dial faces and the needles as well for them to glow in the dark. But I believe you are meant to put the IP decal on the inside for both panels though.

Just as an FYI, throttle quadrant levers, left to right, from the pilots viewpoint :- mixture, throttle ( boost ), propeller pitch. The very small lever at the bottom is for friction adjustment.
Throttle quadrant version B in the instructions ( part D 60 ? ) has an aluminium twist grip associated with the gyro gunsight. If you are being really obsessive then that will need some very thin wire adding to represent the Bowden cables that run to the sight.
It's all nicely detailed, they've even moulded in the toggle switch on the quadrant that activates the undercarriage indicator and warning horn.

@@ModelNerd 1:72 MIG-25 by ICM. Sadly Airfix is not so common here in Germany, and if so, mostly the older kits. But if I can get my hands on the new stuff I’m happy to try them out!

Great video and I look forward to seeing the rest. I just started building my Spitfire today and I have the same problem with part D36 being distorted, but I did manage to get it to fit correctly with a bit of bullying, let's hope there are not too many more problems.

It looks like an awesome kit. But I have waited DECADES for a decent 1/32 or 1/24 scale Griffen powered Spitfire. The Mk XVIII with bubble canopy and full length wing, for me, is the most beautiful airplane ever made. Come on Airfix... Do it!!!
That would be a popular release, I'm sure. I wonder how much similarity there would be between the sprues for this and a Mk XVIII though? The Spitfire is such an interesting aircraft in that the Mk.I looks nothing like the final marks - the only similarity seems to be the name!
@@ModelNerd Yes! But I think the engine compartment for the Griffen engine is considerably longer on the late model Spitfires which supposedly made the actual aircraft nose heavy in flight and consequently less maneuverable than the MkIX with the shorter Merlin engine. Bit straight line speed was much faster on the Griffen Spits. I wonder, however, if the RAF directed that the Griffen airplanes be reballanced by moving the wing forward a bit to compensate for bigger & heavier Griffen.
Just finished building a Revell Spit mk II 1:72 Out of the box, brush painted as I have no airbrush (yet). This looks like a lovely model! I am getting back into this hobby after many, many years and would love to get my hands on this monster of a kit. Though I need to hone some pretty sketchy skills before my eyes give out! 😝

G'day MN, I can't thank you enough for starting this series of videos. As soon as I heard about a new tooling 1/24 Spit., I contacted my modelling retailer mates, down here in Australia, and I reckon I got one of the first batch of pre-orders in for this kit. That was quite a long while ago so, I'm pleased to see they are in UK shops, or at least available direct from Airfix. Hopefully, there's a shipping container out there on the high, (slow), seas with my kit on-board.
Your series will prepare me for the arrival of the biggest Spitfire I'll ever attempt. I prefer larger scales and I'm used to them but this kit, somehow, has a slight element of trepidation and nervousness attached to it. As I'm on a pension now, the chances of lashing out on such an expensive kit again are slim indeed. The exchange rates are going up all the time. I've had to stop buying from my former US suppliers. The USD exchange rate is utterly ridiculous.
I clearly remember back when I was employed, on a whim, I ordered a 1/16 Abrams Mk 1 kit. I was gobsmacked to see it arrived in a cardboard box I can only describe as looking more like an average to large size suitcase; it even having a suitcase-like handle. I quickly discovered I'd got off the bus at 'Intimidation Central'!
There were boxes within boxes and arranged into sections, as one would when packing for a long trip. Basically, I'm a WW2 aircraft modeller but there is just something that appeals to me about the design of the Abrams.
I still have several large builds ahead of it so, there it sits in my hobby room... 'taunting me' to get stuck in and build it. Yes, I'm looking forward to doing this mammoth task but a large model of a tank isn't the kind of thing I can suspend from the ceiling, as I've done with my bigger aircraft.
Anyway, I've left a large corner of a ceiling for a spot to have my 1/24 Spitfire banking smoothly to dive in for a kill.
I've enjoyed being one of your many subscribers and your big Spitfire videos will be like gold when the happy day comes and it finally 'touches down' in my backyard!

Thank you for your kind words, Bill. I don't think the Spitfire is available just yet in the shops here (still showing as pre-order) - I think only the Airfix pre-orders are out. But I hope there is a container on its way to you! On a side note, I was lucky enough to travel to Tasmania a few years ago, back when I lived in Malaysia, and I really enjoyed it - great place with some fantastic countryside.

I don't do scratch building but I thought, if you don't already know, that Hitler (a self-confessed seasick dictator) actually had his own sea-going yacht called 'Grille'. Sadly, there are no kits for it which is a pity because it was a good looking craft. It was a classic old style yacht painted all white and during the war it had guns mounted on it.
I just loved the irony of that hateful man who got sick every time he went onboard even the biggest of his Kriegsmarine ships, having his own yacht.
There are detailed and extensive photos and plan drawings of it on the net but I lost the links when I changed computers.
I am ex-RAAF and my late mother was originally from Tasmania.
Just before I retired my wife and I got sick of travelling for our work so we decided to make Tassie our home. It is great down here; beautiful scenery and just about as far away as anyone can get from lunatic politicians ;). There is also a surprising number of really good model shops.

What an amazing and beautifully detailed kit....Airfix has certainly done this one justice, MN....a pleasure to build no doubt. As for kits I prefer 1/32 scale only for aircraft as old hands and poor eyesight now precludes me from building anything smaller. I've thought about 1/24 scale and, I must admit, your video has tempted me to look into it rather than just think about it. Great start to this build and look forward to seeing future episodes.
It's definitely a nice kit. Although I see Revell are releasing a new tool Hurricane in 1:32 soon so it'll be interesting to see how they compare - typically Revell's 1:32 pricepoint has been a lot lower than most.

The best way to fill ejector pin holes is to punch out some disks from styrene sheet and use them to fill the hole :)

thanks - being in Australia, I'll have to wait - I'll prob drill those holes - always do on spitfires - just finished a Tamiya 1/32 mk8 - breakdown seems similar (not a bad thing that!!), so the timing of this is excellent...
Oh the tail wheel design is the same as a tamiya 1/32 - and hopefully means there will be a mk8 version someway (for us Aussies who like our tail wheels away!!)
Yes, looking at the two sets of instructions they do look very similar
KOTARE have done a really interesting way of the fuselage behind the canopy they have done a peice that fits on top so it's not going together in half so completely avoiding any seamline down the spine! I'm looking forward to this new kit it does look good
Oh that's a really decent idea. This kit does something similar for the top engine cowling - it is a single piece that fits from above. But that Kotare idea sounds great - I'm so sick of sanding down seam marks on aircraft fuselages!

I've never built any of the Tamiya 1/32 kits. The fit here was fine, but you do need to dry fit and test everything carefully, amd make sure everything snaps into place and you know how it should be. Otherwise small misalignments will accumulate and the whole thing will be off.

The only reason I can think for having the instrument panel as a clear part is so that if you wanted to paint it from the rear, mask the details and paint the front side you still have the shiny glass effect?

It's good to see Airfix coming into the serious league with these kits. Their first generation 1/24 scale were rather lacking although they are old kits now. I was going to get the Hellcat but never did. I think I will go for this one though. On large scale I recently took delivery of the Takom 1/16th scale Jeep released through Andy's Hobbies. It looks good if you are thinking of staying large scale. He has just released the 1/16 scale Easy 8 Sherman too. I've not got the space to display large models like this, but the Jeep is ok as in 1/35 it's really small.
Thanks Allan. Yes, I'd be tempted by 1/16 kits (I just saw his video on the 1/16 Tiger today) but as you say they are big. Takom make a 1/16 Panzer I (or is it II?) I believe, and also one of the small Japanese tanks.
@@ModelNerd Yes if I recall Andy's past videos there is defo a 1/16 Panzer 1 and I believe a Stug III. Back in the day I made a few of the 1/16th Tamiya RC tanks which had to compromise on scale to make them run. I have sold those now but still have an unbuilt Pershing to do one day.
Already made enquiries about this kit in New Zealand as well as the 1/32 Spitfire being release by ex wingnut Wings guys.
Ah yes, the Kotare Spitfire. It'll be very interesting to see what they come up with - both for the Spitfire and future releases.
I seem to recall that the seats were made from Aerolite, phenolic resin and paper (I think) also used for circuit boards in later days. Phenolic resin was a main ingredient in Bakelite so a similar colour I would assume

I was in between one of the standard RAF grey-green schemes and the desert scheme. But now I've pretty much settled on the RAF one since I've committed to adding the cockpit parts relevant to that version.
Hi - Looks like Airfix have stepped up their research, engineering and moulding...The Hellcat & Spitfire would make a great display next to each other. The box cardboard should be a bit thicker & using paper to reduce plastic waste is an "interesting" idea.
Yep, they've done a good job. I did look at the 1:24 Hellcat but it's hard to get now and I've got a couple of 1:48 Hellcats to build too.

That kit is huge. I tried a few AirFix 1/72 kits and they were disasters (builder error, not the kit). Thinking maybe the bigger scale may suit me more
There's certainly a lot of fiddling with 1:72 kits. I find 1:48 a nice middle ground, but I couldn't resist this kit!
I would stongly recommend Tamiya 1:48 kits for ease of building. Airfix has some good 1:48 kits too. 1:72 can be a struggle until your modelling skills develop.
Looks like a great kit, even though there are some imperfections here and there. I don't understand why even at this scale, the holes in the bulkheads are not "drilled" all the way. I think I've seen that detail even on 1/48 kits.
Yes, I'm tempted to agree. But also, I didn't want to risk damaging the surrounding, thin plastic.
The clear parts are if you paint your own instrument panel rather than use the decals, so it makes sense to put both options on the same Sprue rather than have them separate.

Always been a tank modeller but this kit just might change my mind! Great video but can I ask where you got your tank cutting mat from?
Thanks mate. The cutting mat is made by a company called Tankraft. I think they're US based so it should be easy to get them there. Here in the UK I got mine from the Bovington Tank Museum shop (online).

Sorry, maybe a daft question! Did you wash all of your Sprues before building? It is recommended on the booklet, but having seen the Airfix Construction Tour and video, I'm not so sure. Cheers.
I know a lot of people do, but I never do. I can't say it's ever caused me problems, but each to their own :)

Hi have been brought this kit and looking forward to building but has been at least 40 years since i built a model,what type of glue is the best to use
There are a few options. I like Tamiya cement but a lot of people prefer Tamiya Extra Thin. There are also plenty of other glue options including Mr Cement.
I'm watching your video on building the airfix spitfire model kit, it's been more years than I care to recall since I built a kit, it was a tamiya 1/6 kawasaki z1300 motorbike kit which cost £39.99!!!. As I'm recovering from knee replacement surgery I'm looking at starting up making a model kit and this spitfire kit looks fantastic, now my stupid question does this kit come complete with the paints required or do you need to buy them separately.

Hi Steve. Not a stupid question at all. This kit does not come with paints or glue (most don't, although "Starter Kits" usually do).

I had the same issue with the twisted pipe part, and thought the same thing why have a clear instrument panel
That's interesting - a heck of a coincidence that we both have the same damaged piece out of over 400 parts each. Should be OK to fix but still a bit of a silly thing to have happen.
@@ModelNerd I also had this issue (part D36). The part represents the windscreen de-icing tank and control. Basically, the part is a fault in the mould and needs surgery judging by the other builds I've watched and photos of the real thing I've looked at.
Were did u get the screw driver from what u used in the video to make the hole bigger please
I can't remember, to be honest. I think for that size I found it in a normal hardware store. Tamiya do some even smaller drills that you can find in hobby shops or online.

No, no figure included (and I'm not sure where I could find 1:24 figures). Perhaps some companies will produce some. To be honest I'd prefer a ground crew, since the kit can be built with everything open.

I prefer to build the larger scale aircraft. The eyes aren’t what they once were. The bigger scale planes also have more room to detail. I don’t have this kit yet…Christmas is coming
This is the first I've built in this scale and the only other large aircraft I built was the HK 1/32 Lancaster. But I do like the idea of these fighters in this scale. Really decent price point from Airfix too.
My son is getting in to kits and the 1/72 scale are beyond me now. I can’t even see what he’s detailing and advice is given to small blurry shapes. This scale is more to my liking

Great build - But your camera spends most of it's time focused on the tank pattern on the cutting mat. Maybe using a plain mat would help
This was the first video I recorded at my new desk setup and I'm struggling a bit with light. The mat isn't the issue (most have patterns and the camera is set to only use the centre focus point). I'm working on it.
Thats like Andy new 1.16 sherman all the holes need redrilled and tabs cut off as keying is to small for anything! Lots of stupid wee tedious stuff that drives you mad being so simple to do why they get it wrong lol
It certainly surprises me when you know that the companies have built several test builds of the kit - didn't they encounter the same problems?
At 4.45 you comment on the hidden ejector pin marks,its a shame the piece covering the marks is full of sink marks!
There's definitely changes in surface colour there, but I don't think it will affect results once primer/ paint are down - there's no apparent change to the surface texture from what I can see. I've talked about it a bit in my upcoming video.

I was quite pleased with the general lack of very small parts - Airfix have done a good job of molding a lot of these details as single pieces
Severely lacking detail. Airfix has gone down hill big time . There is 1:48 cock pits with better detail. The 1:24 typhoon was the epitome of a proper 1:24 kit with real details and amazing cockpit. Half of airfixs range has disappeared too
I'm not sure I've seen 1/48 cockpits with more detail. Which bits would you expect to see here?
