How to Baste a Large Quilt - Pin Basting and Thread Basting

  • I used to only make small quilts because every time I basted a quilt of any size I would end up with a sore back and I thought I didn't have the room to baste a large quilt. I was wrong! I found a much better way to baste any size quilt without hurting my back in the process. In this video I'm going to walk you through a quick demonstration of how I baste a large quilt on an ordinary kitchen table without any special tools. I hope this helps. If you have any additional questions leave me a comment below and I'll try to answer it.

    I can't express how grateful I am for this video! I am in the process of making a memory quilt. Having never quilted before I have been struggling with trying to make a quilt sandwich. It's queen sized and I cannot get down on the floor. My knees and back will not allow it. You're perfect explanation and demonstration have given me the confidence to do this! Thank you!!

    7:00 if you are basting and not going to use it to snuggle under or sleep with or wash your quilt or hang your quilt before you are done quilting it doesn't really matter how far apart the pins are located. But if you baste and snuggle (or nap) with your quilt and decide to wash it during the quilting the process, spacing does matter. And it depends on your batting... look on the bag. It will say something like... quilt no further than 4-inches apart. And that's the spacing you need to have your basting. Personally, l tie my quilts as the basting (so my toes don't get caught in the basting threads whilst napping) and then quilt as I'm in the mood.l can use it and not worry about washing it. 💖🌞🌵😷

    • @suzisaintjames
      @suzisaintjames Рік тому

      I tie a quilt exactly the way it's shown in the video, except half way between the stitches, l snip the threads and tie the ends in a knot. I use yarn but that's because l know it's going to get washed several times before the quilting is completed. 💖🌞🌵😷

      Basting is a temporary way to secure your quilt layers for quilting. There are several different methods. In this video I show pin basting and thread basting. Recently I've become very fond of glue basting. It's quicker and easier, but a little bit messier. Hope that helped. I've been planning a free "Absolute Beginner Quilting Course" and I'm hoping to start filming soon. I'm just waiting on some equipment.

    • @ThimbleStorm
      @ThimbleStorm  Рік тому

      I use old polyester thread I inherited from my grandmother. I always try to use a color that won't blend in with the quilt top. That way it's much easier to remove from the quilt top when the time comes.

  • @crazy4doxies440
    @crazy4doxies440 Рік тому +2

    I think it would be helpful if you flipped it over so we can see the back free basting. Mi pin baste and a lot of times double bat and it is such a pain. Most tables are too thick for the binder clip method and you also need space as well which I don’t have. I’m a fanatic of having no folds or bubbles on the backing because i densely machine quilt.

  • @bjsmith1575

    When you thread baste… are there periodic knots to stabilize movement? If not wouldn’t the sandwich pucker? Please advise thank you

    • @ThimbleStorm
      @ThimbleStorm  Місяць тому

      I use anchor stitches or knots at the beginning and end of each thread. You could also add extra anchor stitches throughout if it makes you feel more comfortable.
      I've never had a problem with puckering because I only thread baste when I'm going to hand quilt. But I think I would have a problem with puckering and bubbles if I machine quilted my thread basted quilts.

    Is this how you would hand quilt your quilt as well by starting each row from the middle out, then moving it to the left n the right on a table?. Beginning At the 8:09 mark on your video.

    • @ThimbleStorm
      @ThimbleStorm  2 роки тому +1

      When hand quilting I start in the middle and work outwards in a spiral. This prevents tucks and bubbles as you work and keeps your quilt nice and flat. You could also work row by row, but I'd start with the middle row. I hope this helps. Let me know if you have anymore questions! 👍
