DIY Polymer Clay Hobbit House Lantern Sculpture on Jar || Maive Ferrando

- Hello! I'm Maive and in this video I'll be showing you how I transformed a jar into a #hobbithouse using #polymerclay. Use an LED tea light to turn the house into a lantern at night! DO NOT USE a regular tea light with a naked flame/fire. You can use air dry clay too.

✿Baking Instructions:
I bake my polymer clay pieces at 110ºC for no longer than 30 minutes at a time. I pre-bake them at the same temperature for 10-15 minutes depending on the size of my piece.
For large pieces like this one, I place the piece in the oven and then turn the oven on so that the piece warms up with it, then count the baking time from when the oven reaches the desired temperature. You can also let it cool in the oven after you turn it off.
Always read the baking instructions for your particular brand of polymer clay, as temperatures and times may vary slightly.

PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT YOU ARE USING AN OVEN SAFE JAR!!!!!
Ok I didn't see this warning anywhere else so I wanted to put this up. As a person who use to work in a glass foundry I can tell you, rapidly heated glass can and will shatter! For those who didn't know, glass will expand when heated and contract when cooled. Any sudden rise or drop on temperature can cause stress on the glass leading it to crack or shatter (depending on the glass), this is called thermal shock. That is why glass artists use annealing ovens to safely bring glass down from a working to room temperature over the course of a few days (depending on the thickness and formula). Your standard soda lime glass (like store bought salsa or jam jars) might not be able to take the heat and crack when placed in direct high heat or taken from hot to cool, like put in the refrigerator from oven or vice versa. Some glass, such as Pyrex, has a certain formula that allows it to withstand heat better than others (can still fracture but significantly less likely to) making them "oven/food safe." Not only is it formula better suited to take the heat, but the glass is tempered, so that if it does break, it is more likely to crack rather than shatter.
Before you attempt a project like this, please make sure your jar can take the heat. Mason jars or other canning jars, I believe, are capable of withstanding up to around 130 degrees C (266 F) which should be within your clay baking temperature range. If you insist on using a standard recycled glass jar, just be cautious when heating and cooling. Don't try to cut corners by raising your oven temp or putting the glass in a chilled place to save time. Perhaps try to bake both the clay and glass in a non-preheated oven. Meaning that the jar will be able to reach temperature a bit slower than just sticking it into a preheated oven.
That being said, I really like the design/concept for this project. I'm a huge LotR fan. Just trying to make sure everyone is DIYing safely!
would you suggest bath and body works jars or are they too thin ? thank you in advance
Rosa R As I mentioned it the last portion of my comment, I highly suggest jars that are meant for canning. Mason jars (or their equivalent) will be submerged in boiling water before used for homemade jellies or jams to sterilize the jars. They are are created to be able to take higher heat. I don't know what kind of glass Bath and Bodyworks is using, but if you want to try it, just be a bit more cautious (maybe wear eye protection).
Osvaldo Adventure glad you said that. I was thinking that must be an expensive project to use Pyrex glass and worried people would just shove jars in their oven. Because you know at least one person. would have clay inside jar as well as lid shut and the horror the poor Hobbits would endure.
Hi everyone,
Thanks for your input. I'd like to remind you that I left comments on how I bake my jars in the description of the video. I've done this for quite a long time now and I've never had any problems whatsoever. I've had oven-safe dishes cracking on me before, but never a jar I recycled with polymer clay. My videos are windows into my artwork and of course I can only talk from my experience and what has worked for me. I would never promote anything that I would consider dangerous.
@@MaiveFerrando I am going to try making my own version of this for the first time... Would a candle jar be good to use for this?
