***** It's like "color" and "colour." They're the exact same word, they just have different spellings. Yes, "cypher" is usually how it's spelled when used in the context of rap. "Cipher" is the same word though, and it's just as correct as "cypher," it's just used far less frequently in this context. Funny thing though is that "cypher" is how British English speakers would spell it, and "cipher" is how most American English speakers would spell it. You would think that since rap is generally an American thing that it would be spelled "cipher," but it's not. Maybe it's just a "screw normal spellings" thing that rappers have done since the beginning, like using Z's instead of S's. I apologize for writing a novel, I just found this interesting. Have a nice day.
It came from the Arabic word سفر. Which is the number zero and pronounced Siffir. The word is not English therefore the spelling of it can vary. For example Ketchup and Catsup, which is Chinese and transliterated into English.

6:37 Their excitement about the experience is just amazing.
why am I crying though
Cause it's beautiful
Now, this is how educated and inspired all of our youth should be, around the entire nation. So articulate. Confident. Full of energy and joy. Expressing themselves safely without judgement. Being given opportunities like this, really gives young adults hope and if you can’t see that here then there’s just no way you ever will. ❤️❤️❤️
6:40 "O MY GAD THAT WAS SO GOD DAMN LIT"
Best. Teacher. Ever.
if teachers weren't so uptight school would be soooooooooo fucking better.
This was so powerful! I love KL’s mission - he’s actually doing some real ish out there touching lives.
imagine listening to a lecture in class and u cant help but overhear kendrick himself rapping in the other classroom and everyone getting lit 🥲
“Hey kids today we gonna talk about gun control”
Dayum!
"All the boys and girls, I got some true stories today"
you know your teacher is cool when he has quotes that say bitch and fuck on the wall
Acts like this are why Kdot and Nipsey are one in a generation talents through and through.
imagine if someone missed school that day 💀
This is incredible! Big ups to this amazing teacher, his students and of course Kendrick 🙌🏽
imagine you skipped that day and your classmates got a free kendrick performance
What a legend. Kendrick Lamar time and time again proves that he is so much more than an artist. Hopefully he can inspire an entire generation of young and aspiring artists who employ what he is trying to pass down.
I'm currently studying to be an English teacher. I am so unbelievably inspired by this video. Thank you, NPR.
I hope your career is going well, go easy on em 🤞🏽🤞🏽
This is one more reason why I have been a huge fan of his since first hearing his music many years ago… Thank you for being such a great writer and role model, Kendrick!
this is what truly seperates Kendrick from other rappers. He, in no doubt, is the best.
Ones teaching kids while the other one is touc-

3:55 - 4:08 TDE needs to sign him now
bruhhhhh yessss
“bro you should’ve came to school yesterday, kendrick lamar was there”
Imagine hearing that the next day!
Wild to think Drake would think it wise to try to taking on this dude. Kdot on a different level. Will be remembered for generations.
Respect for that incredible teacher 🫡
Man i always had love and respect for this guy now even more the guy is one of the good ones in HIPHOP K. much respect❤❤❤
Kendrick touches your soul, Drake touches your kids
😂
Fox won't display this on their channel. They wouldn't be able to twist and and misconstrue the message. Glad he said this is was the best accolade he's collected. Positivity.
100%!
I hardly know Kendrik Lamar. I don't know his music or what he's about. But from seeing this video, seeing the impact he has and seeing how he utilizes it to inspire and invigorate young minds is truly outstanding. Way to be a great role model Kendrik, keep doing what you do.
How can someone even press that dislike button. Even as a joke it isnt right lol
Probably because their school is boring and they're jealous.
Hello Nathan
Drake FANS
This video was sooooooo amazing in so many ways. He gets to meet potential new talents and connect and stay humble with fans, he performs for the school AND Mr. Mooney was cool af wish he was my teacher once upon a time.
this is so amazing. Seeing the teacher be so knowledgeable about music and be able to make a lesson and teach his students who then study music and learn lessons through what they love to listen to or make is AMAZING. I cannot understate how jealous i am of this. wonderful video
can't believe NPR doesn't know how to spell "cypher"
***** A 'cipher' is a zero. Basically a circle.
When he next come it better be with J.Cole!! We ALL still waiting patiently for that K.dot & Cole Album
True
I agree with that statement.
I don't think that would be a good album at all cole isn't even on Kendricks level no disrespect to cole though.
Javon Green You must not listen to J.Cole a lot?
Charles Barkley nah I just don't think he can tie his music together like kendrick does over the course of an album.
These students are so talented 💯
As a 16 year old, he message rings true to me, I love Kendrick Lamar and everything he stands for, I love his messages and I love him as a person, he is truly the biggest inspiration in my life.
Imagine if we had more Mr. Mooneys in our schools!! I’m glad there are teachers like him who realize that education is not linear and see the importance of having students connect to their heritage. Also Kendrick would be an amazing teacher. You can see the passion in his eyes when he is watching the students express their feelings through lyrics and poems.
