Me too. Same age and everything! I admire his song writing so much. Makes you wonder if there were any gems that never made it to the recording studio.
I could listen to Mr. David Gates all day/night long and not get bored at all! His songs and vocals were fascinating since I started to appreciate music at about 7 in the early 70's. Bread 🍞 was among my band/ music heroes. There was a chapter in my life for about close to a decade, i concluded with fondness that their song "IF", the shortest titled big hit love song, was the most beautiful song ever written in the whole universe. Even now, it's still way up there for me. ❤️
David was such a class act for allowing some of his fans the honor of speaking with him. Such a rarity in this day and age to find someone in entertainment be so real. It really comes through in his songs and explains why we are drawn to them.
Being from Tulsa, I can confirm Gates' reputation has always been huge and never forgotten. All thru the 80s and 90s, etc he'd return for interviews, TV spots, fund raisers, etc. His profile really hung in there.
David Gates has been the soundtrack of my life since 1971. Blessings Mr Gates!! I was born in december 11 !!! ( But 1963 ) happy birthday to us !!!!!! 🙏🙏🙏🙏👏👏👏
I'm Brazilian and the first time I heard the songs of David Gates was in the 70's when I was still a child. Mr. David Gates, you are a genius of music and I thank God for your existence for making our lives happy with your beautiful songs !! Big hug
I grew up listening to the hits of David Gates. He is unique in every way. An excellent performer and songwriter. He is a devoted husband and his wife is a genius. Well done!
One of my FAVORITE song writers!!! I grew up in the early 70's listening to his music. He's one of the reasons I learned to play guitar! When I play out I usually get asked to play at least a couple of his songs. I can't tell you how many times I've played Diary and you can still see people tear up listening to it!
I remember seeing David playing a viola Hofner Bass for two numbers one was "If" and the other "Everything I Own". It is a bit difficult to sing and play Bass at the same time but other vocalists like Sting, Jack Bruce, Geddy Lee, Tom Evans , Brian Wilson and Sir Paul became seasoned players that they all became successful with their craft. These guys rehearsed endlessly for hours that's why the records sounded Huge and Melodic.
David is indeed a nice man, all his songs are lovely. Pleased to hear he had a good life with his childhood sweetheart wife who stuck with him all these years and successful children. Music and the creative industry can be so demanding and damaging, w drugs, booze and sinful activities, but he remained pleasantly cool and sane. I was first introduced to Bread when I was 12, but a tall pretty lanky girl, who asked me if I would like to listen Bread on her cassette player. I initially thought Bread was a rock group, so I said No Thanks. Then, I had preferred traditional and religious songs. Never met the girl ever again until today, am 60 now. I can now play and sing Everything I own on my Godin guitar.
Jo Rita alluded to as much during this gathering, which is why she and David took such great pains to stay out of the limelight and raise their kids as normally as they could. To his kids, his songwriting and performing was his job, just like any dad working to feed his family. And that was due in no small part to David and Jo Rita's commitment to stay out of the glare of fame and the base elements that came with it. I admire them greatly for that.
I lost my dad June 25, 2020. I think his heart was broke and just didn't want to live anymore. I was super close to my parents and this song is making for a rather somber evening.
I speak from Brazil. Your voice conveys a lot of peace. I love spending time in the pool or watering my garden in the late afternoon, listening to your music.
This song has always been a favorite of mine. When my dad passed away in 1999, it took on even more meaning. Thanks to David for writing it - it’s been such a gift to us all. ❤️
This is such a unique thing to have an icon like that just sitting around chatting with people! I would never guess that is David Gates. I just watched the full Q & A Session the other day!
Even BEFORE he put together Bread in the early 70s, Mr. Gates already had a long list of accomplishments... After Bread, the list was numerous as well... An amazing musical genius he truly is!
Sorry your father didn't get to hear it ... I HOPE your mother was still around to Enjoy it !!! I'm Positive she'd be bawling her eyes out trying to get through it .
To me even back then when it came out it was obvious that it was about someone's father. I use capo's a lot myself. If the guitar is set up right, the right strings, then capoing goes pretty smoothly for me. I rarely have to retune. It's so nice to actually see an interview with him. These guys were huge influences of my writing and performing. We wore the grooves right out of their albums.
David Gates came to the UK around 2004. I was utterly overjoyed to be able to experience this concert. The girl at the time I was seeing, we had a very up and down love affair. We were madly in love with each other but many things got in the way. Bread was our band and many of the songs were our soundtrack. We both went together and I cried my way through the first seven songs. Quite amazing thinking about it now but I guess events like that show just how emotional you feel inside when it is triggered.
Nice story. Loved his songs in the 70’s in Massachusetts and haven’t been back since 76. Kind of ironic I moved to his home town Tulsa. Nothing brings back memories like these old brilliant songs.
As I was listening with the CCaptions on, David, when you said, "...when you put the capo on..." the captions said, " When you put the cakehole on." And then off... it said. "Then you take the cable off..." SO glad I haven't lost all my hearing yet. Had so much fun over the years learning esp your solo tunes on acoustic guitar. Thanks for the memories! My first time seeing you was during the On The Waters tour at the Seattle Opera house in late '70 or early '71, with a girl I was completely infatuated with in our senior year at Redmond. Ha! You original 4, played that album so well that night. James' guitar accompaniments not to mention vocals were a perfect match for your songs. And of course, his own songs were just as golden. I miss James, Mike and Larry being gone. Just live over the hump from you to the east. Hoping to get to meet you someday. The full interview of this exerpt, posted on YT captured my full attention a few days ago. Thanks again David.
I'm only 12 years old and I love David Gates and bread wish you was still playing and active you really don't see him at all on UA-cam I mean like current stuff is there any current stuff like recent
@@airsupplylive8624 You can do your part by trying to convince your friends that there was great music being written and performed long before they were born, and to articulate to them what is so wonderful about music like this. There's good and bad music in every generation, but David, James, and Bread definitely wrote some fabulous songs decades ago. If you don't know David's solo albums, listen to the long version of "Clouds" suite. It's magnificent! Nobody writing music like that today.
So sorry you didn't get to see him. I was around ten years old when I got into their music. Got to see him live when I was 14 in 2003...None of my friends had heard of him but that didn't matter! Sadly, the last material he released was on the UK only Songbook album... Five new songs. There is a fair bit of stuff on UA-cam now, stuff I could only dream of seeing when I was your age (now I feel old!) So it could be worse! The highlight of my life was in 2016 when I was at the gathering where this vid was filmed! And I got to play one of my own songs for him!
@@rubicon-oh9km It's natural for us to think of our icons from that far back as what they were back then -- as though for some reason they never age if they're not so constantly in the limelight that you age along with them. Like the first time I heard David Gates was when "If" first hit the airwaves when I was 14 years old, and then spent my high school years listening to all of his most enduring hits when he was with Bread. And that image of him on the _Best of Bread_ album cover was seared into my synapses from then on. It's not "hard" to recognize him as David Gates at 76; just another reminder that we're all getting much older. He's really an American treasure, I hope he lives a long life!
he's such an amazing, sweet man... not only as a singer-songwriter, but more importantly, as a son and a husband 🥰❤
This song is me and my feelings about my father. He was my hero, my savior, my best friend
