No matter what album, all OM resonates with my frequencies. And I am just some random dood in the midwest who enjoys gardening. Old or New OM, my plants and myself, love it all. Thank you for the tunes.
I’m all for the lonely midwestern man, isolated from other non-om lovers. Those missing out have different insecurities and possibly lack creativity on it’s silly side. Grow down and bounce back.
i cant emotionally relate to kevin barnes anymore. i once wrote a song for him. i dont mean this as an insult toward him, but hes definitely going through a super hedonistic phase, and i once did that in my early 20s, and it always ends bad. that being said, i find this album extremely interesting, possibly one of my favorites of his newer stuff. it really takes me back to my hedonistic mental breakdown, and this album perfectly captures that state of mind. god the music i made when i was on drugs was so effed up. i hope kevin finds some stability because hes a one of a kind geeenyus and many people love him
Fan of pretty much everything of Montreal releases, but this has been the best first listen impression since 2018's White Is Relic/Irrealis Mood. Superb work Kevin!
I've been following Kevin/OM from the get-go and I have to say, I love that they always evolve, give us something unique and experimental, interesting. For everyone complaining saying they want the old stuff, go listen to the old stuff!!
no. most who want the old stuff want songs, not rants . this is just really arthouse, and good for them and those sycophants of "experiMENTAL". . The Best of Montreal stuff , at least has a semblance of song. I realise this is anti-alternative, but that's what most of the detractors want, not some prosey disconnected rant that still somehow, comes off as formulaic and trite despite its coat of avant-garde ness You listen to the new stuff, those tired of just hearing gold ole ofM, will simply check in, and check out again, on the last several albums. Either way, Barnes don't care, so good for him.
Well if this was my introduction to of Montreal I would feel a lot different about them. I like it.. its just....different. Like "Phoebe fakes orgasms that nobody hears" This album has a similar vibe to hissing fauna are you the destroyer. Its weird and I think I like it
You say old of Montreal is better. I bare witness to the continually changing musical worlds they create with each subsequent album through total commitment to unique sonic textures and constant reinvention of pop song structures which will some day lead the world to see these last two albums of some of the most groundbreaking and influential of all time. We are not the same.
@@khandushasvetovidova1180 So true. I totally get why people wouldn't like the new stuff too much. Even for someone like me that's kept up all these years and has come to love so much of their new stuff, I didn't quite like a lot of the new stuff on a first listen. Currently, their music requires multiple listens for your brain to start "getting" the songs. Idk I'm not a scientist or anything, but probably has something to do with pattern recognition mumbo jumbo. It's the reason albums like Innocence Reaches and UR FUN did so poorly is because they sound pretty good on one listen, but the quality diminishes with each listen due to the pretty simple song structures.
why is the mix so shallow? It's slammed midrange. It's mixed like an FM radio stinger. Is that just the upload compression or does this album actually sound like this?
used to love the group but its difficult to sing along to deeply personal and specific lyrics with words i rarely hear and context i'll never understand. (love paralytic stalks but jeez) That and i've grown out of the hedonistic worldview i once shared with Kev. masterful songwrite and word smith tho, just not a fan of the politics
So disappointed. It's been since 2013's Aureate Gloom since I heard real inspiring music from you. 10 seconds of acoustic guitar and all computers. It's depressing. Sorry.
Playing four chords on a guitar has no more merit than playing a synthesizer. It's quite ironic that while you criticize the lack of non-digital instruments, it seems that you haven't even noticed the bass lines that populate the whole album. If you measure the quality of music in terms of its performance and not by its composition, you are missing out on an incredible amount of stuff. Besides the fact that you should only listen to albums and songs recorded in one take.
I can understand your perspective. While I could agree that while om is awesome at doing what it does, writing with big pretty words/different perspectives and rhythmically juxtaposed via the chord progression changes that attempt to challenge what was once rarely considered among most. I find bits and pieces that I enjoy. Like my life, it is as full with a similar amount of bullshit as I am used to. Seems about right. But I’d be happy if the next album was like that one time I felt such a connection with an abstract sonic interpretation. I still support any effort. I wish I had that tenacity (I tell myself to forget).
@@charlieharrison3089 well said. I'm 64 and take pride in finding obscure music and found this band of all places while mopping my kitchen floor on Comcast music channel on TV. It was the Aureate Gloom album. I forget what song but it blew me away. I immediately went out and got all their 12 previous albums and for 6 months they were all I listened to. But everything since 2014 has just been a major disappointment to me. Mainly because Kevin won't keep the same band together. That band in 2013 was the best band they ever assembled. He's had some exceptional members in the past but Kevin is just too weird a person to remain with. He just makes enemies of everybody.

That wicked groovy section in Modern Art Bewilders really hits the spot. What a moment of auditory euphoria
This new album is a work of art, like all the others! Can't wait to see Of Montreal in concert this november!

The more I listen to his new stuff the more I like it.... its tough on the first try

Old of montreal it's better
But I get your point and it's completely valid and solid
Their new albums are complicated and require more from the listener, thats why people dont like new stuff
It usually takes me a few repeats before the song starts growing on me and i understand it

I actually like the music and think it's really interesting! It feels a bit surreal though, like I might be hallucinating.
