This album cured my back pain and brought my houseplants back to life.
Thanks to this album, my cancer disappeared and I my powers of concentration increased to such an extent that I was admitted into Mensa!
One of the best comments ever
This album ate my hat and farted a yamaka.
I think this is the best of comments on all of UA-cam. And I believe it! 😁
Sounds like an of Montreal song name or album title tbh
The Past is a Grotesque Animal saved my life. I sat on my couch with a gun, and instead cried myself back to reality to this song. Whenever I'm feeling defeated, it's my go-to auditory hug.
My neighbors are gonna love this one
This album makes me want to cry, break shit, and dance all at the same time
if this isn't a great description of this album idk what is
I thought you had a comma between break and shit at first.
Perfect description
Saw them live playing this from start to end in order, in 2007, with all the props, like a fucking sideshow operetta, IN MONTREAL. Unforgettable.
Saw the same in Manchester, UK in Oct 2008 :)
I saw them at the Hollywood Bowl, but they did half Hissing Fauna and half Skeletal Lamping, still simply unforgettable. I believe that is when the keyboardist Dottie got proposed to on stage as well!
@Gzus Kreist why are you here then? got nothing better to do?
Those shows were insane. Good memories fo sho
think i saw them live around that same time frame, 2009, was the craziest show ive ever seen! man in tiger head giving upside down mock felatio to jesus wearing a diaper, and all these priests with pig masks? it was crazy...they are very interesting indeed.
This album does everything for me. It cures my insomnia and depression episodes. So underrated.
Bunny Ain’t No Kind of Rider is so nostalgic for me. Being in middle school at the time, being up all night talking to my crushes on AIM. Good times lol.
15 years later, and this still remains my favorite album of all time. To this day, this albums understands me better then most people do. Thank you for still being there all these years.
absolute facts lol, only good thing my ex ever did for me was introduce me to these guys
Brilliant
This album was awesome.
Thanks Of Montreal.
"The past is a grotesque animal" is gold.
One of the greatest albums ever made.
I listen to this every night as I fall asleep
This record saved my life in 2007.
crazy/same
Amen
This record saved my life in 2020 💚
i was going cold turkey with help of this album, and i make it, back in 2011, but now im in same shit
Fuck it’s saving my life (again) currently
How come of Montreal understands my feelings better than I do like I can't describe how I'm feeling half the time and then I listen to them and look at a lyric and realize "Wait that describes how I'm feeling right now perfectly"
A grand achievement of modern music. Kevin Barnes is one of the greatest songwriters in the 21st century. At 42 years of age he comes off as more youthful than most 20 somethings. Shine on.
Craig Harrison truly dedicated
You could not be more right--I love Barnes artistry. He seems to have an unlimited well of brains and talent from which to draw.
Great comment
@craig harrisons I sucked bro off 😒 😑 😪 😕
He was 33 here though

Discovered this after listening to “A sentence of sorts in Kongsvinger” for years, and being curious where it came from.
Now, consider me a fan.
I don't even doubt it anymore. This album helped save my life. Words do it no justice.
God this album is basically perfect, even 14 years later. Maybe especially so.
Couldn’t agree more 🍄
My dad plays this album in the car sometimes, it’s always a good day when he does, puts us all in a good mood :)
congrats you have a fucking cool dad!
Yeah.Your Dad is awesome.Do what he tells you.
I played this album for my Dad and he liked it too!
Learn a lot from your dad.
dude, your dad is the shit!
From the Elephant 6 days to now, Kevin and co. have seen me through much of my adult life, and they feel like old friends. But _Hissing Fauna_ dug its claws deep in my soul. It's my existential angst wrapped in a pretty bow.
I know some elephant 6 fans don't really like them now since they changed after they left, but I personally love Of Montreal new and old
Their elephant 6 works are great, their post elephant 6 works are great

This album was with me during a very impactful stage in life. This is a great job, sounds even better in '21. Hats off.

I found of montreal when I was 14. I listen to this album every time I get my heart broken. Cheers to time #3 bois
2:57-3:00 That transition from that song to the next one. A pretty creative way to arrange songs in an album if you're listening to them in order.
also the next transition at around 4:00 always gives me chills tbh
I thought it was the same song
This is easily one of my favorite 15-20 albums ever.. for context I'm typically more an indie rock guy, my favorite band of all time is Modest Mouse. I was a metalhead as a teen, that's what got me playing guitar in the first place. I still listen to all the music I did when I was younger but the nostalgia I feel when I play this album is unmatched. Takes me right back to such an exciting time in my life.
Same 🍄
Same. MM is my definitive favorite. This album reaches such a depth in its progression. Magical
Just found this band 3 days a ago. Best day I've had in 4 weeks.
simply one of the greatest albums ever made
This was the first album I heard of "Of Montreal", been a fan ever since. Listened to all the albums, and I still love this album more than any other, because I played this album more than any other album out there.
I play this album religiously!!! I feel so mental now days, I use this album to reset my mood. These guys give me confidence against those that judge me. I manage to improve instead of decline. Because this band they're soooo smart!!!!! I actually feel smarter after listening. Barnes is so creative the whole band is. ❤ I dance to it outside with my dog and I remember the importance of life.
To ENJOY it!!!!!
Yay
P sure Kevin made this album himself. The band is amazing too ofc
I found about this through some random person on discord. The internet is truly a magical place
I've been to a bunch of shows and this album was this band. Unique and incredible on acid haha nobody did it like them
Defintely listening to this next time I drop
Seeing them do this in full at Music Tastes Good on the 10th anniversary is one of my fondest concert memories - like seeing a massive symphony. I don't think Kevin Barnes hit a wrong note all night.
I genuinely love this record. So many years and still great!
Though they have much other great music, this album is just genius--the writing and music are phenomenal.
It’s rad this album is on here! But would be way cooler if ads didn’t pop up in the middle of the songs, I mean come on guys lol
"I am satisfied, hiding in my friends apartment, Only leaving once a day to buy some groceries" - Kevin barnes practicing lockdown and social distancing in 2005
Gay
Wish I could do this forever.
Hot
tbh I’ve just started listening to this band like 3 months ago, and it has filled a whole I didn't know I had. I've said it to my friends but I'll say it here again. Nothing would ever be enough for my ears. The music does everything I like and that I used to search in different artists, but here I just have it all. Don't get me started on the lyrics. I feel like every song I've heard so far speaks to me and says so many interesting things. If I had to choose just 1 artist to listen to till the end of my life and give up everything else, I'd choose to just listen to of Montreal
The Past Is a Grotesque Animal is my life story
same
Marvelous album! Greetings from Poland!
czesc!
so happy there are fellow oM fans in Poland :) I was born in the US but first gen
always been a favorite. ive purchased this album 3 times. i wasnt very responsible with CDs, much less anything else, in my twenties. this brings back so many bittersweet memories. will be my kayak soundtrack tomorrow. much love
I was writing a book that no one cares about or maybe could rate to, so I just deleted it all and will say this: while this is not my favorite Of Montreal album, this is one that holds great meaning for me. That is all. I appreciate the art that I can never make given breath and life for others such as myself to enjoy.
Thank you.
what's your favourite?
I really enjoyed Sunlandic Twins, Aurete Gloom, and Lousy with Silvian Brair. But I also went through a big Skeletal Lamping phase...It's really hard to pick one XD Satanic Panic in the Attic is also up there. It really depends on what I'm feeling that day. I really appreciate the Eno tones of AG, and the return to the 60s sound (almost) in LwSB. But Sunlandic Twins...I don't think I ever get tired of that album XD @@tissilix
Kind of a cheat, because I really like a lot of their albums (Cherry Peel is good, too. I sadly wasn't able to get into The Gay Parade much, but maybe I should revisit it?)
you shouldnt have deleted it bro. do you have a backup anywhere? id love to read your work
@@unicornrecords3691 Oh! I'm sorry, I didn't mean a literal book. I was just writing a little novel in the comments and decided to cut it down to what mattered and what was worth saying. But it's kind of you to offer!
Kevin Barnes is the best songwritter ever! I just wanted to see them live here in Brazil. I would do everything to see ofm playing ;---------;
Manassés Cohen porra brasileiro não perde a chance né KKK
É difícil ser um dos poucos fãs de ofm aqui no agreste KKKKKKK

"time for a career" - MGMT after hearing this record
Andrew and Kevin are actually really good friends! They had a side project for a bit and Andrew played at some Montreal shows here and there
@@jessefigueroa2682 Nice! I love both bands.

I mean, turn the kick into 808ish and add more reverb on everything and BOOM, It would be a trendy synthpop. What a timeless album this is.

Grotesque is a French war
playing fortnite in 2005 oml
instant classic, was super happy to play a show - opener - with them
Amazing album but The Past is a Grotesque Animal is really grating, totally unnecessary at 12 minutes long!
Dude, this song is literally the heart of the album.
that songs like the emotional peak of the album
no.
That song literally ties everything together.
That song is the only reason I bought the album. If it was twice as long it still wouldn’t be long enough . I guess having an attention span longer than three minutes needs to be worked on .
One of the greatest albums ever made
