I really think you should listen the of Montreal's albums from 2004-2010/12. Your intuitions about the Bowie and Prince influences are on point and I think it will give you a nice background for of Montreal. Also, these are their best albums (especially the Hissing Fauna to False Priest era)
This album connected to me so hard. I have schizophrenia and it this album truly felt like it reached into the depths of my brain and allowed me to accept those asynchronous thoughts that even I don't understand. I believe kevin has said before that he is on the schizophrenic spectrum, which would make sense for why I feel so connected to her work. Grief is an echo, black chrome rodents?
Been into of Montreal since 2000, it’s always cool to hear what smart newcomers have to say. It’d be a trip for you to go back and listen to the first album Cherry Peel in comparison. But really, I think you in particular would be very into their album Paralytic Stalks (2012). Thanks for the content
of Montreal had dense songs figured out over a decade ago. I'm glad Kevin still tries to push the boundaries in glammy psych because it's a niche in music that I love to listen to and I don't see any other artists wanting to make more than one album in the niche.
12:47 I am CRYINGGGGGGG. found ur channel just now, guess they recommended it cause I've been listening to freewave lucifer a LOT since it launched. So far so good, very entertaining 🧚🏻♀️🧚🏻♀️🧚🏻♀️
Hey Prof! I love that you covered oM.. this is why I fuck with you. I’m a super fan and I’ve listened to Kevin’s music more than anything else and you offered some great insight to references I would have completely missed. And yes! Kevin has said bass is their favorite instrument to play :)
There are several stages that happen when us old school fans listen to newer of Montreal albums. 1. Wtf did I just listen to? I don't think I like this. 2. I miss their old stuff (mopes while jammin' out to Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer?) 3. Goes to a show, hears the new stuff played live. Mind is freaking blown. 4. Returns to the newer albums bc that shit was fire when played live. 5. Loves new of Montreal. Nightsift is my fave song from the new album. My fave album is probably Hissing Fauna - and I remember hating it when I first listened to it, then moping out to Satanic Panic 😂 They truly put on one of the best live shows you could ever hope to experience. Go if you get the chance.
To get a real gist of this band you have to check out their older works. Not the oldest stuff, but the Chunk in the middle. I'm also personally a big fan of innocenc reaches which is not a fan favorite. Something about these more recent releases that just don't tickle the pickle The way the middle library does.
Really glad to hear your thoughts on this! I haven't quite dived in yet, but the second listen-through was already a lot more enjoyable than my first, which is usually the case; and I'm sure before I know it, I'll be loving this album.
The thoughts on this are so interesting, glad people are still listening to Of Montreal. I think the question of "is Kevin is the new Prince/Bowie" would have made more sense maybe 10-ish years ago, which for me makes it even more disappointing that he sometimes doesn't give in a make an album of certified bangers. Since the Prince/Bowie question is sort of done, the new question with every of Montreal album is "will this one give us more than 1 song/moment of pure pop hits?" and the answer is almost always "No, but it will be something very dense that you'll be left thinking about for days". Not the answer I usually want, but maybe that's a good thing sometimes. For every Paranoiac Intervals (which is think should be a massive hit) there's a I Feel Safe With You Trash (very interesting song just not "accessible"). It asks a lot from the listener, which overall I'm thankful for. If you ever have the chance to see them live, jump on it.
White is Relic is wall to wall certified bangers, and the three subsequent albums each had WAY more than one great pop song/moment. Of course, Skeletal Lamping was full of bangers too, but I think you were just questioning the more recent stuff.
hey Professor Skye, I clicked based mostly on the title and checked out Blab Sabbath Lathe of Maiden, which was a lovely mind-twist of a song. I'm specifically commenting because I heard a fantastic series of words between 5:19 and 5:32 and I was wondering if I could sample you saying this for use in a sound collage song? If not, thanks anyways, lovely video
Wow, surprised to see you cover OM (though I guess I missed your previous review). I don’t know if you’ve dug into their back catalog yet, but Hissing Fauna is a masterpiece. It’s Barnes’ most personal work featuring some of his strongest songwriting and also the beginning of his Bowie/Prince hybrid sound. I haven’t kept up with their last few albums (feels like Barnes has been repeating himself for the past decade or so) but you definitely piqued my interest in this one.
I'm a big fan of Kevin Barnes, especially since Paralytic Stalks, so maybe our tastes just mismatch, but for me he's gotten weirder and more experimental post Skeletal Lamping, in a way that really works for me personally. Any time I come across something of his that I bristle against, further listening usually convinces me I was wrong, and rewards me with great music. And even the albums I don't love as much always have a handful of weird gems.
@@kneesturnedvelvet3725 yo, Paralytic Stalks is great! Very underrated imo. Wolf Murder and Dour Percentage rank amongst my favorite songs by them. And to be fair, there are a handful of gems across Sylvianbriar and Aureate Gloom. I guess I just feel that oM hasn’t really surprised me since PS and that Barnes’ knack for writing pop gems has diminished a bit. In all honesty though, I haven’t spent much time with the last few albums and so far Freeway Lucifer has been an interesting listen, so perhaps I need to revisit their more recent stuff.

Hmmm is actually a song dealing with the recent death of his mother

Oh, totally!
I wouldn’t have found this album without you! It’s amazing! Thank you as always Mr Skype!

I would argue that “Pond” also makes Psychedelic Glam Music. Nick Allbrook is fabulous.
Paralytic Stalks was the last truly great oM album to me. Glad Kevin is still going but the new stuff doesn’t do much for me.
