This version of the Kreh Loop is the best fishing loop knot I've tried, esp for light jigs on relatively heavy leader line. I prefer a final loop that is compact and neat, and I show you how to easily size your loop in the video. I also go over loop knots vs snaps/clips.
Here's a picture of the basic Kreh's Loop (from netknots.com); note that I use 3 wraps regardless of line strength: goo.gl/2PK2n8

Cooking and Fishing Thanks for this vid & the link! Just retired to the shore & shifting from inland trout & some bass fishing to salt water. Excited to start. This was terrifically informative & visual... better than many I’ve seen lately while I try to learn & soak in as much good valuable info! Your camera focusing wasn’t great & contrast color behind your line could improve but overall line & knots were seen clear enough! Thanks, again!
@@nukimo2967 Thank you!! I will do better on future knot videos in terms of lighting/focus etc :)
I'm so glad you showed us this knot. I can see the Acton that you get with the loop. very cool
Thanks for sharing Roger. The loop knot is all I use when I am fly fishing. Gotta use it more when I am jig fishing. The devil is in the details
Have to admit: I’m an experienced angler , but I’ve learned a couple new things from u this week. 💯 I’ve been using the larger loop knot. A huge tog took me on a major ride last fall on a jig fight. Could feel it twisting and turning and digging. It broke me off 😂😂
a big tog will haunt you for years lol...
Probably one the top knot demos I've seen. Clear, close up and overall, well done. Thank you!
Ty! I was afraid it wasn't clear...
@@CookingandFishing not at all. You brought it back into focus well and the fact you used a good sized jig head made it easy. I'm going to keep it and use it when I tie crappie jigs or bass hardware and even some ocean toys. Thanks again.
This makes a lot of sense. The smaller the loop the more sensitive your line and rod can detect those very subtle bites especially with those deeper column bites.
Thank you for an excellent presentation and use of clarity in those camera shots.
Thank you! Yeah esp in lighter lines...that small, rigid loop is key.
This one's a keeper. Good call, need to start doing this on some of the stiffer Gulps.
haha thanks! Imagine if gulp had keitech action...there'd be no fluke left in the ocean!
Being a clip guy whenever possible...every single thing you say is 100% accurate. From the extra lean or roll when jigging through the slack. To being able to at times feel the clip interact with the line tie. Owner even sells clip with soft plastic covers at the bend to make it a silent connection. I'll even admit to plasti dipping clips and wire leader in the past :)
New camera?? Many don't realize just how much a solid polamar / uni knot really effect the action of a bait. Is it no surprise that the hottest trending bass baits are swing head jigs and such.....whether it be freedom tackle or jika rigs. All have a free swinging hook
Yes! Some people would say it doesn't make a difference to the fish...how they know that, I don't know. All you can do is min/max your presentation. Now this Owner clip with a cushioned cover...I need to get my hands on some!
You are a good instructor. Clearly, nicely and slowly explained.
Thank you! Really appreciate it...a knot video would be worthless if people can't follow along, glad you were able to.
You should do more of these! So helpful
Thanks! I'll find a few more to do before the fishing season starts in earnest!
Perfect knot. It never slips if tightened properly. It can be made stronger by making the initial overhand knot with a double overhand knot. I was able to land many years worth of stripers and bluefish with the knot on Clouser streamers.
Excellent tip!
Awesome! Just found your channel, love it! I’ve been using this knot or years, after I found it in one of lefty’s old books. (Fantastic books, more fishers need to read his work) it’s my favorite loop for terminal connections. Tight loops make good action!
thank you! Definitely a good knot for many many situations
Great knot!!! 👍🏾 I learned this when I learned how to jig for stripers. Awesome knot for Jerk shads on the fall. That wobble ...
Exactly a small tight loop knot acts like a split ring and gives your jig a lot of secondary action on the fall!
Very nicely explained and demonstrated, thank you! Take care
Very good presentation!! Found your terminology similar to how I speak as well. Lol. I’m a fly fisherman and the loops are so much better than terminations that I call “rigid”. I also do not like using snaps when I’m spin fishing with bait or artificials. Thanks for the presentation!!
Thanks for watching! I'll use snaps for hard baits...but never on jigs.
You ain't wrong, bro! Awesome logic!!
thanks!
Now this was a very informative video I just tried making this not end it is awesome I’m thinking about calling out of work today just to test it crazy I know but thank you
Lol never crazy to go fishing...thanks for watching!
Thanks a bucket full of fish!!
I was trying to tie the same knot (I think) in a different way. I believe out of 12th attempt I succeed in 2 success. But yours - every time!
So great!!!
Cooking and Fishing great tip and thx for sharing
you're very welcome, thanks for watching!
my fav loop knot!
It's a good one!
Very good concept
Great Demo, Thanks
thanks for watching!
Wow these was awesome thank you sir very much for brief explaination
thank you! Glad it was clear enough to follow
Good sir thank you for a great explanation
ty!
Aahhh ... vis. the loop vs clip ... now I understand what you meant when you say you can identify/feel the hook tip grating against tog's teeth 👍
lol I remember that day, my first trip with the Expride rod. I was amazed! Can't wait til tog season 2018!

Thanks for the video. Do you use tungsten jigs or lead when fluke fishing? I never considered tungsten but I can see its advantage. Well besides its price.
Very interesting...I'm a clip user mostly out of convenience, but I'll definitely give this a try. Looks simple and effective.
The clip is definitely convenient, I use them on all moving baits...I wish someone would invent a soft clip, maybe out of that invisi-swivel material haha
Very helpful video, Roger. Thanks. Could you discuss the knot to use when tying the fluorocarbon leader to the braided main line?
floro 12lbs and under, I tie the improved Alberto knot: ua-cam.com/video/roHMWeL9yCQ/v-deo.html
over 12lbs I tie the FG knot, with a rizzuto finish. FG knots I tie at home, if I have to retie on the water it's Alberto regardless of leader size!
double uni
@@danm1319 lol never. Please unlearn the double uni, it is about the most inelegant knot known to man :)
Good video!
i know this video is from 2018..... being a fly fisherman mostly we use loop knots quite often on certain subsurface trout flies..i will give you a slightly different way to tie it that is noticeably smaller and perhaps a bit quicker at least for us because we fish alot with 5 and 6x tippet material and very small flies which is alot harder to tie than on 15lb test..you start off the same exact way as the kreh loop but instead of feeding your tag through the overhand knot first you bypass it,, make your 3 turns past the overhand knot then you pass your tag through the knot and seat it..so you went through the overhand knot only once instead of twice... there is absolutely no difference in strength at all and ive caught hundreds of fluke with it and cant remember losing a single one to a break off...used it for many years fly fishing and now for the past 5 yrs for saltwater since ive been addicted to the fluke game from shore..all my fluke fishing i use and employ the exact same rigs you use from watching your channel..try it at least and see what you think...if im tying directly to a jig or bucktail its a davy knot all the way...if you dont know that super simple knot you should..it is by far the smallest knot ever to use and you can tie that knot just by feel with your eyes closed..i have done it many many times when friends say i cant just to show them u can..happy fishing..btw,,,,i love that unhookem tool i saw on your video and spoke with the owner about a bigger one for saltwater and supposedly there working on one..
Yo... Roger Dodger... what's good. It's Stretch.....
I would think with your OCD, you would use a colored line for video presentation and make sure you also tie a NO slip loop knot. The only difference in the knots are ; after looping your lure you return thru the over hand on the same side as the first, then twist 3 times up the main and return thru the over hand holding the tags that make up the actual loop out of the way from the OPPOSITE SIDE OF THE 1st two.
When done correctly the tag will exit the knot @90° and be cinched around it's entire circumstance.
It's the only knot I use for any lure or streamer, anything I'm not just burning straight.
Imma try this tonight
I like this knot, I use it for small fish I believe that it reduces the fishes line detection
not sure about line detection but it certainly gives your lure a better action!
Great video thank you
Good tip thanks for sharing .
ty!
When I’m standing I use one of my fishing pole guides to hang the hook so I can have better control when making my knots. This knot is perfect for live bait fly lining.
It's a great knot: strong, fast and easy to tie, and also uses up very little of your leader material.
Helpful video, thank you!
thank you for watching!!
Awsome vids. Where can I find these jigs ?
Thanks.
A fishing ball barrel snap swivel can be just as effective. I haven’t got a breakoff or it come undone. Nice clip by the way.
I use various snaps for moving baits, but never with a jig. Thanks for watching!
I love using this knot for jigging and when I use crankbaits.
Jigging 100%, crankbaits I take off the split ring and use a clip
@@CookingandFishing I should try that. Thanks for the idea.
Love that Jig head with wire keeper....What is it? Brand? Source?
Question.....I really could use something like this for light line, bluegill fishing through the ice. do you think this knot is anymore strong or an advantage over a regular 9 twist and through the bottom then cinch.
I think it would work well, thing with very light line (2-4lb) you have to really examine your jig or lure's eyelet...any rough spots or sharp edges in the metal will cut through a loop knot.
so... how did a knot change the hook you started with to a totally different hook?
Roger, do you use this knot when jigging blackfish?
I do, not sure if it's better but honestly...I use the loop knot for all my jigs. The only exception is Damiki rigging in freshwater, but that's only bc I need the knot towards the back of the eyelet for the bait to suspend horizontally. Other than that...a jig/jighead gets a loop knot!
Tq sir👍👍
Thank you
What size hooks on the gamakatsu jigheads for 4”-5” gulp?
5" mullet/grub 3/0, 4" mullet/grub 1/0 or 2/0.
But, you should only be fishing the 6" jerk shad, which goes on a 3/0 gammy jig hook :)
Would you recommend this for a ned rig by any chance or no?
100%, but you have to make sure the jig eyelet is clear since you're using light line. Esp on a steady slow swim...the loop knot will give your ned rig just that little extra sashay :)
The clicking and rattling of the speed clip will attract fish also.
Maybe, but if I want sound I'll use rattle chamber inserts or beads...for most jigging I don't want to feel anything percussive through my line
yessir
7:04 those EZ clips are the way to go..
That knot is going to be my new bucktail connecting knot...
It's a good knot, esp for lighter jigs. Really gives em more movement
How do you tie two jigs with this type of loop knot, assuming the bottom has the one you demonstrated?
I only use 1 jig. If you want to add a teaser, just a standard dropper loop 14" or so above the bottom jig will do. But I never use a teaser for fluking.
Hey good Loop Knot tip here!....And just curious, how long of a Fluoro leader do you normally use when Fluke Jigging?....Thx, JD
I used to tie this loop knot but I have found one better. It's the canoe man loop knot. It's easier, it's quicker, and it's just as tough if not tougher.
I've used the canoe man, solid knot but imo not as strong and doesn't finish as neat. For 99% of freshwater/inshore fishing...either will work fine!
Where can you buy the jig head box
size L: amzn.to/2MGCBS1
Great knot saving money instead of using ringed hooks which are expensive.
That is certainly one benefit!
👍👍👍
Great tutorial on this loop knot! Thanks! Can you please send me a link to those tungsten jig heads? Thanks again
Thanks! I believe those are the Picasso tungsten jig heads. They use a gammy 604 hook which is a med wire, very versatile. For freshwater I use mostly the Keitech Super Round heads, that's a Daichii light wire hook.
Try it with 4,6,or8# line, lot's of luck!
No need for luck - 5 - 7lb fluoro for all these fish landed, most on the loop knot featured in this video - ua-cam.com/video/vAvHpFJB_2c/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/cegraAhgrww/v-deo.html
Can you use loop knot with braid?
There'd be no point, as the braid is too limp to hold a loop...
@@CookingandFishing right...so have to have a leader. Thanks great vid
@@shanelozoya9287 Thanks! Yeah for light jigs, you want a leader. The only time you'd go straight braid is frogging or maybe flipping/pitching...I don't think there's a saltwater application where I wouldn't use some sort of leader.
is that a drop shot bait? what size is that?
I think you're talking about the Keitech Shad Impact. They come in 3, 4, and 5"...the blue/gold one is 4".
@@CookingandFishing Yeah I was talking about that..
I learned this knot from the back of a Rapala lure box. Same idea for Rapala, they don't recommend using any snap swivel or anything like that, ruins the action of the lure. Always tie your jerkbait too instead of a snap swivel.
I actually use a snap to most hardbaits, and use a loop knot for jigs. The only exception is very small, finesse topwaters...sometimes any snap/ring will dive the nose and prevent it from walking correctly.
isnt this the rapala knott?
Not quite, the rapala knot goes through both loops...this one only goes through the small loop. Result is a tag end that points towards the hook.
already have caught a 30# Blue Cat off of these (going to try to get a 60#+ next year). ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxzXmlErSqVAEGWFEKO530BvTqFDw53QW3 Definitely very strong, and sharp. Additionally, the gap is wide enough to actually hook a fish (not always the case with circle hooks). I purchased the 8/0, but probably should have got the 9/0 (they seem slightly smaller than other 8/0 hooks). Additionally, having the point in-line helps if you drift fish. I have yet to get a serious snag with one of these hooks.
🇮🇶🌹🌺✋👍👍😌
haha...thanks?
no way I can do that with 4 or 6 pound test
8lb is my threshold for loop knots - 4-6lb is too vulnerable to hard edges on your line tie/eyelet.
Its just a rapala knot isn't it?
Not quite, the rapala knot's tag end goes through both loops; the Kreh's only the first loop. I've had much more consistent results with the Kreh Loop over the rapala, esp in lighter floro.
Cooking and Fishing
Than I've been tying a kreh's knot 😆
Loop knots are weak and hard to tie. Especially in lots of wind or when it’s cold.
Why is it that when you are attempting to share your wealth of knowledge with us you fail in your approach to display your expertise..I have a photographer’s background and color is a function of black/white..It’s black against white or vice versa..Bottom line!! Use a yellow cord against a black background or red against white .. It’s very difficult to view your presentation..TIGHT LINES
Thanks for the feedback...I'll keep that in mind if I ever do another knot video.
