She’s not speaking for both, by the end she realized that she was really losing the battle and that he was just using her. So she told him just to stay with the woman he was with and to leave her alone
Country music does this a lot, turning the lyrics around to mean something different. At the beginning "stay" means "stay here with me". By the end she means "stay there with her".
Yeah that's one interpretation. Another, is that there are a lot of women who knowingly share the same man 'cos they both figure he's worth it. Usually in these cases, it's the man who can't pick between the women. So that's another way to see the song.
She was the wife in this story, and wrote this as the other woman as a coping mechanism to both justify, and condemn the emotions she was feeling...Hate, love, fear, rage, pain, sorrow, and finally, acceptance of the fact that the man she married was a complete douche bag, and would be better off without him...incredibly brave, and probably the most brutally honest breakup song I've ever heard...Simply beautiful! 💔
This is not true. She was inspired by Reba’s song “Whoever’s in New England” and wanted to write a song from the other woman’s perspective. She’s just a good enough writer that she can get in the other person head enough to feel their emotions.

She is the other woman. That’s why in the beginning she says “it’s just another call from home, you’ll get it and be gone and I’ll be crying.” A lot of people think it’s about her being cheated on. It’s a beautiful song from the perspective of a mistress.

A few things about this song: This song is in response to Reba McCntire song "Who's ever in New England". This song is from the side chick point of view. Jennifer Nettles, the singer here, actually found out her husband at that time, was cheating on her. Every time she had to do the video it was extremely hard on her. The guitarist was telling her they could do it another time. Finally, she gathered up her courage and performed. Those emotions that she shows in this video are very very real.
Jennifer Nettles has such a strong, pure, beautiful voice. Even of someone doesn't like country music...how could you NOT feel this song?? I love Sugarland. Glad yall enjoyed Stay. ❤
The beauty of this song is that she is the sidechick with low self esteem. Then halfway through it she learns her worth and the song goes from "why don't you stay here with me" to "stay where ur at because I deserve better". This is classic storytelling. My favorite song from them.
It usually starts with them meeting a "single" man, then he confesses: I'm still technically married, but we're separated, filing for divorce and just live together for the kids. She accepts it and falls in love, then it turns out he's still sharing a bed with her. It's tough to sympathize, but let's be honest, both women deserve sympathy; he deserves pain.
I agree with this depending on how long she was with him after knowing the truth and then leaving the situation. A few months is reasonable, a few years is not ok at all even if she get pregnant.

Sugarland’s “Stay” is the first of the duo’s chart-topping songs to solely be written by singer Jennifer Nettles. Although she has never lived the storyline of the song, she knew the subject of betrayal is something everyone could relate to, yet she wanted to tell the story from a different viewpoint. The song was written four years ago and inspired by Reba McEntire’s “Whoever’s in New England,” which was written from the perspective of a wife whose husband is cheating on her. Nettles knew countless songs written from that viewpoint but none from the other two people involved. She says most people don’t realize that even the person who is doing the cheating gets hurt as well. “Even though the person who is cheating might think he or she is getting away with something, they know they aren’t living their highest truth,” she says. “And they wouldn’t be in the situation if they were just happy-go-lucky in the first place. Nobody is happy in this situation.” Once she decided to write the song from the other woman’s perspective, Nettles was overwhelmed with emotions and says the song pretty much wrote itself. “You know, it was just in a couple of sittings on my couch,” she explains. “And once the first line came, ’I’ve been sitting here staring at the clock on the wall. I’ve been laying here, praying she won’t call,’ the story just unfolded.” Kristian Bush, the other half of Sugarland, remembers being blown away by the lyrics the first time he heard the song. “This is one of those first times when you become like Bob Dylan, where you are writing the character’s story rather than your story,” he notes. “And it’s a huge moment, and I am humbled around people who write like this. When I heard that song, I was like, ’Oh, my gosh. This is a heavy hitter of a writer here. This is a monster of a machine that is about to write songs.'” “Stay” was one of the first songs Nettles and Bush wanted recorded for Enjoy the Ride because they knew the song would resonate with fans. While headlining the recent CMT on Tour, the duo encountered several fans who gave them the strength to speak out in their own relationships. Nettles said she knows how hard it is to say something you know is for your own good but at the same time doesn’t feel good while you’re saying it. And in that moment of standing up for what is right for yourself, she says, you’ll be amazed at how powerful and liberated you feel. Bush says they often got odd looks from audience members wondering whether the song had anything to do with his and Nettles’ relationship. Bush is married and says his relationship with Nettles is a brother-sister relationship. His “big brother” instincts came out when they taped the video for “Stay,” as Nettles became overwhelmingly emotional. Bush recalls, “Immediately, I was just like, ’Everybody stop. Stop this! Y’all leave the room. Y’all made her cry.’ I was like a knuckle-draggin’ dad or a husband or something. I was really freaked out.” He went to console Nettles, who had stepped out of the room, and offered to send everyone home, saying they could continue taping the following day. But Nettles assured him she was fine and continued to cry during the next three takes, making it hard for Bush to watch. “About that time, I’m spent,” he said. “It’s not even noon and I’m emotionally drained. They had to tie me down to watch all of this happen. It was like watching someone torture your friend.”
She won the best music video of the year, because of this song. And yes, she is the other woman begging him to stay and leave his wife for her. It is a very sad song because there’s a lot of people that goes through this moment in life, but then again we are not here to judge because we are not in their shoes. Love is blind, love is blind, love is blind and lastly love drive someone crazy.
She wrote this song when she filed for divorce from her cheating husband. She was the wife in this situation. There was even an interview on it and the guitar player said he had to ask them to stop camera because it was too hard to watch her hurt over it. This was very real for her as it is many women and men who are so in love with someone who won't love them back.
I've inadvertently been this woman, and this song resonates with me to this day. I was so devastated when I found out the love of my life was also the love of someone else's..💔 It's a kind of break you can never repair. You break your heart and you feel guilty all in the same moment.
Another one here that got played the same way. Unfortunately I used to have a temper that I bottled up until given a reason to explode. I almost killed him when I found out.
This was so real and raw that they kept trying to start again when she’d break down- finally the guitar player said enough! And they went with what they had- 💜✌️✨

This reaction video actually helped me in 2 ways, it helped me see this song that I’d been listening to since I was a little kid in a whole new light, and it helped me see that the woman I loved didn’t love me the same and helped me see that it wasn’t healthy to hold on to a love that wasn’t there, I honestly had tried everything I could, but nothing worked. I pray to god that her and her baby live a long and happy life and that she finds the one that makes her happy, Bc I still love and care for her.
Thank you for playing this!! This is just one of her many powerful songs. She isn't apart of Sugarland anymore. She just goes by her given name Jennifer Nettles. I love her powerhouse voice. If you guys want a good song from her look up Sugarland - Joey. It's about her bff & I will leave it up to you to find out about Joey! 💞
This was very much a personal song for Jennifer. She was going threw her own divorce at the time.. that's why the emotion is so raw in this video. It's real, it's her deep emotions that are brewing up infront of the camera because of her own personal life. No matter how many times I watch this video.. seeing her truly break down like that.. destroys my heart and makes me bawl!! Also the video is so much more powerful when you watch it beginning to end without stopping. I know you guys are reviewing it but beginning to end the build up of pure heartbreak poured out is unbelievably beautiful and sad!

Greetings from Germany! Today I got my BA certificate. I am officially a Bachelor of Arts The song you just listened to means so much to me ... I am studying teacher training with Music and English as my classes (I hope I wrote that right ...) And for studying Music I had to pass an entry exam. There I also had to sing and I chose this song. One of my teachers cried ... and two days later they told me I passed and that they especially liked that song so much. I really am happy to have my own connection to the song (although the song also hits home lyrically ...) I just wanted to say thank you for reacting to such an emotional song! If you want to hear more emotional stuff ... listen to "Cam" ... especially her songs "burning house" and "Til there's nothing left" are totally beautiful (but then ... everything she wrote is stunning). Make it a great rest of the week greetings from Germany again Jfreak 😃

Love this Song if this truly is your first time coming across her, listen to her other top hits, they are just as brilliant Jennifer Nettles has the Voice of a Goddess
I love this song!!! The story I got from it was she didn’t know that he was married ended up falling for him and he promised to leave his wife and she finally got the strength to be done with him and at the end she’s like when things get rough with your wife and she’s begging you to stay you should just stay there cuz I’ve got the strength to finally let go and realized that the dude was playin them both. But I could be wrong! Either way this was a great reaction video!! Looking forward to more!!!
This song hits hard for me because my ex husband had cheated. I stuck around for a few weeks thinking we could work it out. But then I realized it wasn’t worth it because he wasn’t going to give her up. When I hear this song it reminds me of my situation and it being me singing.
I totally understand your point of view as for me I don't think I would even try to work on the relationship because I don't think I would ever trust her again and if I don't trust her there's no point to try
She was legitimately crying during the video. Her band mate said it was so hard to play and film when he realized she was singing her heart out .. literally.
She wrote the song for a friend of hers. She saw her suffer a lot for a married man. Shit happens. Love too. Can happen to everybody. Love Sugarland. Best voice on the planet. The most heartbreaking son I have ever heard. Jennifer Nettles I love you ❤️
She is the side chick, and she chooses redemption, to move on, without him. It’s a song about redemption and acceptance for something that will never happen.
So this is the first time that I’ve seen you guys and you pick one of my favorite songs of all time to break down. Sugarland’s “stay” is iconic. Thanks for your input on this song.
She was going through a divorce where her husband was cheating. They wanted to wait to film but she said no. The pure emotion gets me every time I watch the video
I used to get requests to sing this song all the time on karaoke nights. If people knew why I picked it the FIRST time I sang it (and was okay with it every time thereafter) they would know I was actually pretty broken. The lyrics hit me like a train the first time I heard it, cause my husband was a cheater. I tried (for the sake of our vows) to make things work with him, actually had long conversations (and even some heated arguments) with the women he'd messed with. He'd find different ways to try and hide their numbers from me. Became pretty creative with it actually, even making fake "license plate numbers" so he could "park a work truck at the hotel" (he worked on oil rigs). Was one of those who wanted the cake and to eat it too. And yes...I finally left him. Told him to just go be with whoever he wanted but to be sure that, next time, he actually loved the woman enough to leave others alone before he took any vows. I sang this song with absolute intent to get over him. Those lyrics helped heal my brokenness.
I never heard this song as her being the side chick but if she was I'd feel bad for her too..theres a side to every story not so black and white..I was in her shoes where my fiance had another girl and this song hit home. Pretty sure she was the married one..
She didn't write this song because she went through it.shes been married too Justin Miller since 2011she is very happily married never left her husband ever no she didn't!!!!!!!!

This is one of the best reaction videos cause you’re really listening to the lyrics and debating where your feelings lie. It’s a story, just how a song should be. I’m sick of song just being about generic love. We need more songs like this
This really happened to Jen in her marriage and she ended up getting divorced and moving on. Got the info straight from Jen when she was a judge on our TV show a couple of years ago in Nashville.
She’s seeing a married man who’s lying to her saying he’s gonna leave his wife n she finally gets the confidence to realize she deserves better n tells him stay with your wife.
I have about 9-10 country in my collection of music (@6500 songs, mostly rock & metal) but this is one of those country songs I have. This woman sings with so much soul.
I watched a “behind the scenes” interview. The “other woman” is actually the bottle. Listen to the song again with this knowledge and it will make you love it and her even more.
I am so happy that you chose to listen to this country music by Sugarland. Although they are not a group anymore, Jennifer Nettles' voice is so good. She is a solo artist now.. Also did you know that her music partner, the guiter player is related to the Bush Bean family. Just a little trivia.
She is the side chick. She fell in love with the guy even though he's with someone else. Whether she knew from the start or not. She lives him. But she deserves someone all to herself so she's telling the guy not to bother her anymore. She's breaking up with him.
That song and especially the video hits you right in the feels. I love the raw emotion by Jennifer and how she’s hurting, begs him to stay with her, but develops strength as the song progresses until she tells him to stay away. This topic may be uncomfortable for some but Country tells it like it is and if there’s any emotion that you’re dealing with, this genre will bottle those feelings up and make music that will hopefully help you. Great songs along the lines of this one, about infidelity, realizing your mistakes, or even getting the courage to break free from a damaging relationship are All These Years by Sawyer Brown; Promises, Reasons I Cheat, and Hard Rock Bottom of Your Heart by Randy Travis; It’s Your Call by Reba McEntire; and You Were Mine by the Dixie Chicks. Man, I’d love for you to react to those songs!!! Thank you, we appreciate what you’re doing and for taking our requests!
That is incorrect. This definitely from the point of view of the other women . He keeps promising to leave his wife but doesn't. "Praying she won't call" meaning the wife calling her husband to see when he will be home or check on him.
She's speaking for the side chick. It's all about him and the woman he's cheating on someone with. I love how Jai says she doesn't feel sorry for a side chick. I've been a wife in that situation. Umm...bye ex husband.
This song gets me because I was in that situation, didn't know he was married when we met and didn't find out until after I was in deep. He'll still try to contact me out of nowhere, 10 years after I finally had enough.

There was even an interview on it and the guitar player said he had to ask them to stop camera because it was too hard to watch her hurt over it. This was very real for her as it is many women and men who are so in love with someone who won't love them back.
She’s now married to the guitar player .
She wrote this song before her husband ever had an affair. It was she loved Reba McEntire’s When whoever’s in New England
This song WAS my life. I heard this song and broke down. You can just feel the emotion.
Jai always gets so emotional with these types of songs, it's like she can't bear to see other people in pain. She really feels the pain in sad songs.
At the end she’s confident and liberated herself to realize she was just side piece cause if she was more she wouldn’t be begging.
I've heard this song 1464941136468 times, but I cry EVERY TIME.
This was so real and raw that they kept trying to start again when she’d break down- finally the guitar player said enough! And they went with what they had- 💜✌️✨
I absolutely love this song!!! I remember listening to it and watching the video and just crying! She has an amazing voice. Love Sugarland.
She’s being played. And she is finding the strength to dump him. It shows how complicated life can be at times.
No this song is not about her life she's been happily married to Justin Miller since 2011.Ive been following Sugarlands music 🎶 since the band come out and I tell you her husband didn't cheat on her!!!!!!!
She was the wife. The song is about her first marriage. They actually stopped filming the music video at one point bc she got so emotional.
True Story!
In the song, she is singing from the mistress point of view
She was the mistress. He wouldn’t leave his wife.
First recording is what they used. They made her do this over 10 times.
@@randishifflermain3086 Nope
A love song from the other side of cheating. The unspoken heart break.
Well said
Damn I hope you aren't speaking from said experience cause you nailed this
@@tonyfro23 I was the one cheated on.
I met him, he talked and we both realized she was a POS. Now we're Facebook friends.😅
Jimmy Stafford Stafford song is called the wild where the flower the Wildwood flower child on the farm and we never knew what it was called some citizens apply some say there's a wait I never give it really too much
Jim Stafford Wildwood flower grew Wild on the farm we never know what it was called
The sugarland band name was actually named for a town in Texas, because Jennifer remembered the movie that Goldie Hawn stared in that was filmed in that area,
Love all of Sugarland music.
You would enjoy Little big town. They're music is also grest
Y’all need to react to Chris Stapleton “Tennessee whiskey”
I actually realized that you already did lol
LORD DO I EVER!!! him and timberlake cmt awards!!! THEY WERE THE SHOW AND ARE STILL BEING TALKED ABOUT!!!! OMG!!!! now look what you've done----i gotta go pull it up......lol....peace.
I love that song
Greetings from Germany!
Today I got my BA certificate. I am officially a Bachelor of Arts
The song you just listened to means so much to me ...
I am studying teacher training with Music and English as my classes (I hope I wrote that right ...)
And for studying Music I had to pass an entry exam. There I also had to sing and I chose this song.
One of my teachers cried ... and two days later they told me I passed and that they especially liked that song so much.
I really am happy to have my own connection to the song (although the song also hits home lyrically ...)
I just wanted to say thank you for reacting to such an emotional song!
If you want to hear more emotional stuff ... listen to "Cam" ... especially her songs "burning house" and "Til there's nothing left" are totally beautiful (but then ... everything she wrote is stunning).
Make it a great rest of the week
greetings from Germany again
Jfreak 😃
This song gives me goose bumps sometimes. Her voice is so strong. I've heard her sing "Oh holy night" that is very powerful.
As a Country Music Lover #1 and Lover of all other kinds of Music #2 I have always keep up with big hits in Country and when this Came out I cried and listened to it over and over again.
When your heart gets attached to something it's really difficult to let It go. Right or wrong it's still difficult.
Your so rite
VERY TRUE!!!
She has the best voice.
her husband was cheating on her and she wrote this song from the other womans side.
Yes she did. I recall her speaking about it, and how she couldn't stop crying during recording it.
did you user both ears?
@@Cassiel75 what are you on about?
She didn’t write the song. It was sent to her from a fan.
She was the one cheating with Tim magraw
She was legitimately crying during the video. Her band mate said it was so hard to play and film when he realized she was singing her heart out .. literally.
My take: She was the 'side chick' who finally realized the guy was just using her and never had any intention of leaving his wife and kids.
But there was no mention of kids in the song. Just the two woman and the man .
@@AngelaPeardonFineArt I assumed... What other reason would he give for not leaving his wife?
She wrote the song for a friend of hers. She saw her suffer a lot for a married man. Shit happens. Love too. Can happen to everybody. Love Sugarland. Best voice on the planet. The most heartbreaking son I have ever heard. Jennifer Nettles I love you ❤️
I love Sugarland they are the truth
React to their song " Stuck on you" u Will Love it
She is the side chick, and she chooses redemption, to move on, without him. It’s a song about redemption and acceptance for something that will never happen.
In the song, she is the “other” woman......Jennifer Nettles was going through a divorce at the time which is where all her emotion came from.....
This song tears me up. There is so much emotion.
Wife broke my heart, came home early from work and she was with another man in our bed 🙈 I never been the same , great song
Sorry you had to go through that
I'm sorry hun.
I'll keep you in prayer. (Despite whether or not you believe, I do and it's all I know to offer.)
💐
You’ll realize the blessing later
So sad I’m so so very sorry
She wrote this about her marriage, she wasn't the side chick. She ended that marriage.
Ya she did !
She didn’t write the song. They won an award and she thanked the guy that wrote it and trusted them with it.
Her article with CMT: Although she has never lived the storyline of the song, she knew the subject of betrayal is something everyone could relate to, yet she wanted to tell the story from a different viewpoint.
Nobody is happy in this situation.”
Once she decided to write the song from the other woman’s perspective, Nettles was overwhelmed with emotions and says the song pretty much wrote itself.
“You know, it was just in a couple of sittings on my couch,” she explains. “And once the first line came, ’I’ve been sitting here staring at the clock on the wall. I’ve been laying here, praying she won’t call,’ the story just unfolded.”
I’m a huge Sugarland fan. I love everything they have recorded.
Jai's got me laughing out loud watching this. "I'm not feeling sorry for a side chick!" 😂🤣😂🤣
HAHA me too!
Me either this song usually gets changed when it comes on but I wanted to see her reaction
@@aliciariedel9342 exactly!! I normally won’t listen to this song either because I have NO pity on a side piece...
@@lisatyndall852 hate that song but torn between two lovers I love probably because it came out when I was too young to understand what it meant
This is one of the best reaction videos cause you’re really listening to the lyrics and debating where your feelings lie. It’s a story, just how a song should be. I’m sick of song just being about generic love. We need more songs like this
She is the side chick but at the end she tells him "Stay with your wife. I ain't doing this no more."
You guys are the sweetest!I love your relationship. Very lucky to have each other.
This was what helped me get over being married to him & being cheated on while being pregnant realizing me & my son don't need his demons
Jennifer Nettles is awesome in concert. This is one of my favorite groups. It started with this song many years ago.
The singer put herself in the other women's shoe and sang this song from that perspective. Very powerful!!!!
so glad you understaood this song. so many seem to have it backwards.
I know one thing yalls love for one another is beautiful! Just beautiful! Reminds me of me and my husband!
I lover her song with brandy clark called “his hands”
I have about 9-10 country in my collection of music (@6500 songs, mostly rock & metal) but this is one of those country songs I have. This woman sings with so much soul.
If you like this, you’ll love “Baby Girl”
and heart Jennifer Nettles is a Native of Georgia and a powerful singer. This song is so EMIOTIONAL and Heart felt
She's the sidechick. She's telling him he can stay woth his wife now since he can't leave her. She is indeed the sidechick.
This is the only song/story that can make you feel for the other woman but so happy she finds her strength and is able to stick up for herself.
This song illustrates that right or wrong everyone is hurt by infidelity.
Always LOVED Sugarland. Long time fan.
She was in the middle of a nasty divorce from a cheating man.The pain and tears are 💯% real
Forever my favorite song by them. Such an amazing group
I watched a “behind the scenes” interview. The “other woman” is actually the bottle. Listen to the song again with this knowledge and it will make you love it and her even more.
Not correct. www.cmt.com/news/1578707/the-story-behind-sugarlands-stay/
That's not accurate at all. I think you got song to interview wrong.
I am so happy that you chose to listen to this country music by Sugarland. Although they are not a group anymore, Jennifer Nettles' voice is so good. She is a solo artist now.. Also did you know that her music partner, the guiter player is related to the Bush Bean family. Just a little trivia.
No doubt side chick song Sunny Sweeney "From a table away" it's also really good.
I came to the comments to suggest this!!!!! Love sunny sweeney
Spot on reaction guys. Wonderful
She is the side chick. She fell in love with the guy even though he's with someone else. Whether she knew from the start or not. She lives him. But she deserves someone all to herself so she's telling the guy not to bother her anymore. She's breaking up with him.
Love love love this song it's one of my favorites!!! Definitely listen to sunny sweeney from a table away!
The side piece realized she's NOTHING but a side piece. hahahaha
Anyways, this is a great performance by Jennifer:)
She’s married to him and the other girl is the side chick. That’s why she says “we don’t have to live this way” and how SHE has to share him.
That is incorrect. This definitely from the point of view of the other women . He keeps promising to leave his wife but doesn't. "Praying she won't call" meaning the wife calling her husband to see when he will be home or check on him.
They made her do that song over so many many times till she just cried during the last one and that was the butter. It made her awards.
what are you even talking about. NO 'THEY' DID NOT...AND WHO IS 'THEY' ANYWAY?
She is with a married man and then finally realizes he won't leave his wife
You guys always bring a smile to my face. AWSOME
She's speaking for the side chick. It's all about him and the woman he's cheating on someone with. I love how Jai says she doesn't feel sorry for a side chick. I've been a wife in that situation. Umm...bye ex husband.
One of THE BEST CONCERTS I'VE SEEN IN NASHVILLE # A BLACK WOMAN WHO LOVES COUNTRY
My god they still don’t understand what side of the relationship she’s on after listening. She is the SIDE CHICK.
This song gets me because I was in that situation, didn't know he was married when we met and didn't find out until after I was in deep. He'll still try to contact me out of nowhere, 10 years after I finally had enough.
Jennifer is the wife that’s trying to get her husband to stop cheating with his mistress. She decides to let her have him and move on.
Yes!
This is one of my favorite songs. I just found you two but I will be tuning in to watch every time your own!❤️
