I appreciate ya'll taking a listen, but you really must listen to the original band and song. The man singing in this vid is the younger brother of the original singer and there truly is no one that can replace Ronnie Van Sant (check out Lynard Skynyrd plane crash info) The lyrics are simple and true enough though! One of my personal favorites 💖
I was living, homeless, for many years. I remember the day I hit rock bottom I would just walk nonstop high on crystal meth and listen to this song, and I remembered how my mother raised me in the values that she gave me and while this song was playing, I broke down and wept for 40 minutes. This song will always be special to me.
Ronnie's studio version is so much more complex. When my father passed this song came on the radio. As we are going to his funeral procession, it will always have a special place in my heart.
Not trying to knock Johnny at all, but the band was not the same without Ronnie. Would recommend checking out the original recording with Ronnie singing lead. BTW, Ronnie had another brother, Donnie, who was the lead singer of another successful Southern Rock band called 38 Special. One of the best live rock performances of all-time by any rock band is the song Free Bird that Lynyrd Skynyrd performed at the Oakland Coliseum in 1977. You should react to that one.
You should listen to the original recording. If you liked Johnny Van Zant's voice wait until you hear Ronnie. My favorite Skynyrd song is Call Me The Breeze, its a cover of a JJ Cale song. Freebird has sentimental memories for me.
You need to see the live version of Freebird in Oakland California 1977. This was three months before the plane crash in October 20, 1977 that took the life of Steve Gaines, Cassie Gaines, and Ronnie Van Zandt bunch of other members were injured. Gary Rossington, which livedtill 2023 March 5 was his death date. He passed a heart condition and he was the last original member. All of them are together again playing Freebird in the heavens.
If you want to hear the real LYNYRD SKYNYRD and see what it was all about you have to listen to the versions of the music from 1973 till 1977 plus the First And Last album after the plane crash on October 20th 1977 they reformed in 1987 for a tribute tour and it was so popular they kept going and did some really good music but the original tunes must be heard by the original band . And just so you know LYNYRD SKYNYRD NEVER did a bad song ! You'll see . Try Call Me The Breeze , That Smell , Freebird of course , The Ballad of Curtis Loew , I Need You , and Swamp Music just to name a few . Skynyrd will quickly become a favorite , if you listen to three Skynyrd songs you'll be hooked , and if you listen to six Skynyrd tunes any six they'll probably become your favorite band ‼️🎸💯 Happy listening ✌️😎🖤🧡🖤🧡🖤🧡🖤🧡🖤🧡 WHO DEY ALL DEY EVERY DAY
Skynyrd was "Southern Rock" and yes it melded several genres into the guitar dominated music. Skynyrd has many bangers. Other Southern Rock bands, like The Marshall Tucker Band, The Allman Brothers, etc., are/were also great.
The original band played their very last concert in my hometown. In October of 1977, they left Greenville Memorial Auditorium in Greenville, South Carolina en route to their next show at LSU but their journey ended as a full band in a fiery plane crash in Mississippi. Ronnie and Johnny Van Zant, lead vocalist and guitarist, were brothers and founders of Lynard Skynard. Ronnie Van Zant, Cassie Gaines, a back up singer and her brother, Steve Gaines, guitarist perished in the crash. Skynard didn’t move forward until many years later when Johnny Van Zant pulled other members back together and began touring again. I met their drummer, Thomas “Artimus” Pyle, at a fundraiser in Greenville 10 or so years ago. What a delightful but humble man! He is the last surviving member of the original band and was in that fiery plane crash. This song holds a very special place in my heart. One of my sons passed away 12 years ago and this was one of his favorites so his widow had it played at his memorial service. On my son’s sarcophagus, the lyrics inscribed were “I’m a simple kind of man.” and my son was just that! I feel he’s with me when this song is played. Suggestion: “Freebird“, just as my late son is now! Beautiful song! Thank you for sharing! I’ll now listen to your reactions.
So, there are 5 members from the band in the 70s that are on this stage . Gary Rossington in the unbuttoned black shirt, Ed King in the greenish shirt, Leon Wilkeson on bass in the top hat, Artimus Pyle on drums, and Billy Powell on the keys. Only Artimus is alive today. Johnny Van Zant is the lead vocalist who took the reins 10 years after the plane crash that took his brother Ronnie's life as well as Steve Gaines guitarist, his older sister Cassie.a back up vocalist, Dean Kilpatrick the bands road manager, and both pilots on October 20th 1977. Johnny has done his older brother proud for sure. That being said, you need to check-out some of the 5 studio albums and the 1 live album the band released before the crash. There is no video of that live album but there is quite a bit of live video from multiple other locations on youtube. Thanks for the reaction. One of the greatest bands ever and the gold standard of the Southern rock genre, imo. Phenomenal live.
Here's the studio version, if interested. "Lynyrd Skynyrd - Simple Man" (by the channel: Lynyrd Skynyrd) RIP: Ronnie Van Zant, Steve and Cassie Gaines 💔🔥🎸U R Missed 🙏
Yes you are not really listening to the real LS because you have got to go back to the original band and listen to the song again and you will see immediately that this is the true version of this song and the way it was made to be played. Not taking anything away from the little brother that stood up and said hell yeah I would love to keep the band going and I know that I will never be able to fill my big brother's shoes but he gives it one Hella try!!!
Another song which is a true story is that smell that’s about Gary Rossington he is known as Prince charming. And they reference him in the song as Prince charming. It’s when they were trying to get off the drugs.
Like Johnny says "flags are about heritage not hate." Gotta do Freebird live in 77 in Oakland or in England when Ronnie and the ban walked out onto the "off limits," Rolling Stones tongue. Badass move by the fellas. Also, they blew the Stones out of the water. As their opning act Also, you will see Ronnie perform barefoot alot. He said it was to be closer to the music. The man was a task masker too. All the solos you hear, they were done down to the note and time. Watch the OG Skynrd performances and you will see Ronnie giving cues on the solos and watching each members solo to make sure. The guys were serious musicians for sure
Probably my favorite Skynyrd song because it hits hard emotionally and because it didn't get overplayed for the past 40 years like 'Freebird' or 'Sweet Home Alabama'. 'Tuesday's Gone' is another emotionally powerful one from Skynyrd you might want to check out. As far as great vocals and musicianship, you guys need to check out "The Allman Brothers Band" too. They and Skynyrd basically started the Southern Rock genre of the 70's and 80's. I'd recommend their song "Soulshine" for a similar vibe to 'Simple Man'. I'd also recommend "Whipping Post", "Don't Want You No More/Not My Cross to Bear", "Black Hearted Woman" and many others from the Allmans. Really, you haven't heard blues/blues rock vocals until you've heard Gregg Allman sing.
This is a much later video, after the death of the 3 members of the band including their primary songwriter and vocalist Ronny VanZandt. The sound isn't the greatest. Try the original studio version as it will be well worth it ... great song and message.
Three things that I fully appreciate you guys doing: 1) being willing to listen to music outside of your comfort zone or experience 2) actually LISTENING to it, rather than just having it playing while your attention is elsewhere 3) realizing & recognizing that there is sooooo much great music out there, and that there's a reason some of these bands you are listening to have sold millions of records and have devoted followings. Keep up the EXCELLENT work!!
Great to see you bros doing Lynyrd Skynyrd.. this is just the tip of the ice berg. This group has a huge catalog of fantastic songs. Make sure you do the live version of Freebird from 1977. You will be blown away! Trust me.. money back guarantee. 100% satisfaction.. you made a mistake on this song. This is not the original singer. He died in the plane crash. This is his brother Johnnie. It's decent but he can't touch his brother Ronnie with a 10 foot pole. You need a do over guys!! Ronnie Van Zant was the heart and soul of Skynyrd. Lead singer and lyricist for all their songs. Ronnie Van Zant! You just made a rookie mistake thats all. Dont get discouraged by long play times with Lynyrd Skynyrd Songs, trust us subscribers these guys are the best rehearsed band in music history. If you want some rockin boogie woogie check out Call Me The Breeze. Make sure you stick to 1973-1977 thats the original band. Make sure you see the live video's.. TRUST ME!!
Even though it wasn't the original version, that was still an excellent performance. Johnny is a helluva singer. There's another brother called Donnie that's an excellent vocalist also. I'm glad y'all have finally checked them out. Lynyrd Skynyrd was one of those rare bands in which their albums (their five studio albums with the original band) were flawless, no fillers, every song was a good one. I actually like their deep cuts better than the hits. Check out the first song "I Ain't the One" from their debut album entitled Pronounced and take it from there.
We used play this record regular when were young in the 70s.. My close mate passed away couple of years ago his family played it at his funeral.. Brought back great memories of our childhood and a few tears.. Great tune
I'm with the others on here -- you need to listen to the ORIGINAL STUDIO recording of this song. Not sure who suggested this live version but it is nowhere near a match for the studio version with the original musicians! Can't even listen to this....

"Ride the Tiger" is a good one too.
Maybe y’all could do the studio recording. This was sometime after the plane crash that killed some of the band including the original singer. This is Ronnie’s brother and he doesn’t sound anywhere as good.
You guys used the wrong version of Simple Man!! Use Ronnie's lead from the 70s!! That's Ronnie Van Zant's little brother singing!! Using this version is blasphemous!! Do it over!! You will see a difference!! Please do an original cut!!
A great song! The studio version of this song is special. The pre crash songs are truly great. Check out the live version of Freebird in Oakland 1977. This was the last concert before the plane crash.
Sirs the band you listen too is called -AYNT SKYNYRD- Any song any album pre Oct 20 1977(Plane crash) is LYNYRD SKYNYRD. These guys have 1/10th the talent od the OG band. You are doing your self a dis if you do not check them out. You love music and this band was tight as tight can be. for live song Knebworth 76- T for Texas. This band is my number# out of all of them. Seen 100s of live show everyone from AC/DC to ZZTOP. Pre77 LS was flawless as musicians. Sorry to rant but this vid is a sin to me because it AYNT SKYNYRD. Bro you do realize that Gary, Ed, Leon, Billy and Artimus are onthat stage right? Were they supposed to stop performing because Ronnie and Steve and Allen had passed? Of course we’d all have loved for the originals to last forever. Look what u got now. Not one of them alive anymore but Artimus.
@@tho6t bro that was the tribute tour and yes I know who is on stage . Still just a cover band since 77. Just my opinion. I saw them in 76 and 77 so anything without Ronnie to me is not LS
Yeah, if you use ANYTHING other than "original footage"/Recordings from the 70's, you are only using "tribute band" versions. The sound and LEGACY as Lynyrd Skynyrd is entirely based upon the band's original members in the 70's prior to the devastating plane crash that took so many band members/crew at one time.
I've been backstage at so many big concerts. I've seen so many greats as gen x. But this in 1987 (I was very young) was the best concert I'd ever seen. Better than Prince and that's hired to beat. I saw purple rai tour twice Ive seen Crue 3 times, ozzy was first concert in 84. I've seen almost every group/ musician from 1983 to 92 Odin em Duran Duran, all metal gtouos guns and roses. I was ad,ers (original guest) and. Was able to sit in the side of the stage. Slash asked me for drugs. No one knew who they were opening act. Long story. Axel was arrested forts song in and a roadie was asking if I could sing. I can but I was young and dint know who they were or their. Suicide. Ive seen the grateful dead overrated. Pink Floyd at the time they coukd t play so. I have because of Waters. I e seen almost every act. Robert plant from backstage. A dream as a zeppelin fan, but I was born far too ,ate. I was too young when John Bonham. died. Psychedelic furs etc. This is y fav I cert. I was with friends so stoned. And it was the 10th anniversary of the crash. They played in Birmingham. Musically, it was glorious. 😊
Once again Gentlemen... you have landed smack dab in the middle of my teenage years 🙏 Blessed to have lived through 'em 😳 Spread the love Y'all 🐶😎 🇺🇸 Fun fact: The drummer is Artimus Pyle (original member) he survived the plane crash, made it out of the swamp to a farm house... where the farmer came out and shot him in the shoulder and Artimus was barely able to mumble PLANE CRASH!!
Fuck you! I'm talking about the band in general. Ya know what they say, Opinions are like... and you are apparently one! And next time know your facts! They released this in '73. I was born in '59, you do the math, if you can 😵💫

You guys used the wrong version of Simple Man!! Use Ronnie's lead from the 70s!! That's Ronnie Van Zant's little brother singing!! Using this version is blasphemous!! Do it over!! You will see a difference!! Please do an original cut!!
They named their band after their high school gym teacher "Leonard Skinner" then became world renound 😊
A great song! The studio version of this song is special. The pre crash songs are truly great. Check out the live version of Freebird in Oakland 1977. This was the last concert before the plane crash.
This song was the Mother/Groom dance for my son's wedding. His choice. His Momma (me) raised him right. 😉
The original studie version is the one to watch, this doesn't do it jutice whatsoever.
Note the original
Augusta Ga
The studio version of this song is 1000 times better than this live version! it's not even a comparison....
Yup the original is best !!
THANK YOU, this version suxxxxxx
Sorry guys but you need to do this with the original lineup not this version.
Original studio version is really beautiful
The Honkettes
You're listening to a version that wasn't even around in your teenage years - this is far from the original studio version, it's a crap live one.
Fuck you! I'm talking about the band in general. Ya know what they say, Opinions are like... and you are apparently one! And next time know your facts! They released this in '73. I was born in '59, you do the math, if you can 😵💫
so many skynyrd songs ..... give me back my bullets ,,,,whats that smell ....give me three steps...the needle and the spoon...working for mca..... so many songs
one of my favorite bands, and songs, of all time. this, however, was the Worst live version i have ever heard...
Original was so much better
Do you got to do the original band and then you also need to do free bird live 1977 in Oakland
You need the 70s version with the original lineup.
Watch free bird live. 1977 Oakland California concert. The real lynyrd skynyrd.
