well, this is awesome. i was thinking of a list of adaptogens, and this is wonderful. got rhodiola and ashwaghanda, didnt know there were others that had more intense results. thank you for making this
I have the symptoms of both a yin deficiency and a yang deficiency. I can feel exhausted und restless at the same time. Does that mean I shoud use adaptogens close to the middle or can I combine yin and yang ones? Where do all the other adaptogens fall in this spectrum?
Perhaps not, as there seems to be TCM counsel to mix, to various degrees, with varied precise 'formulas' for varied conditions. At minimum, there is significant advice to 'rotate' between herbs, dependencing upon their extremity in the spectrum. There may be categories within the categories as well, which would lead to mixing, for instance, as to which organ they may seem to more highly affect. I am saying more from a logical standpoint and to what I've read and experienced over the years, rather than as a TCM student or graduate per se, but I have heard it said that it is well, for instance, to not take Deer Velvet for a prolonged period without balancing it out with Schisandra, ... so that advice seems to fit into this model. Possibly 'further modulate' and fine-tune might often be the case rather than totally cancelling each other out. Recently, for myself, I take Rhodiola and/or Eleuthero earlier in the day, and Ashwaghandha more towards afternoon and evening. Since most herbs are not like radical drugs, we have some degree of lee-way to experiment as to what resonates best for us individually. (It's been a year since you asked, and no one else responded, ... it is only in that light that I am "quick" to offer response, on 07/15/2018.)
... and yet, if you have a Yin Excess and want to balance by adding more Yang herbs, you might just create what we call Internal WIND , and more Deficiency .
is ho shu wu contraindicated in people with loose stools present (not quite diarrhea)? what single adaptogen do you recomend instead if so? do you think schizandra is too estrogenic for men used in isolation? what about used for a short time?
Because something is more towards the 'YIN' side, does that mean it is then estrogenic, necessarily? I heard him say a couple of times, in general, that he was not speaking specifically in the scope of 'gender' per se, except when he spoke of Sarsaparilla, then he did intimate that there. I have taken Schizandra off and on for several years and have noted nothing estrogenic about it, and for me it has been somewhat stimulating, and cerebrally enhancing, from time to time, with even quicker reflexes and so forth, and I have good reason to believe that it enhances acetylcholine and reflexes to an extent, as well. Unless I am mistaken, he is speaking here of Yang and Yin, for the most part more of in an 'energy' attribute sort of way, which may in some cases not totally align with how we would bucketize it, or categorize from a hormonal angle. (Since I have seen no other response to your question, which you asked aproximately 2 years ago, I hope it does not seem as though I am hasty to provide 'my take' on it. - 07/15/2018)
How wonderful to have access to those who are learned, that we may learn to heal ourselves. Thank you, Annie

If somebody was taking two adaptogens at other ends of the spectrum would the cancel each other out or compliment each other?
