  • Looking for the best dual fuel generator for your RV or camper? Or maybe a versatile portable back up generator? Today I unboxed, setup, and tested the Champion 4500 watt dual fuel generator by @Champion Power Equipment. It will run on gasoline or LP propane. I plan to use it for camping with my RV travel trailer. I don't plan to use gas. Instead, I think traveling with propane bottles will be better; less likely to spill than gasoline and won't smell. Check out my first impressions and review. This is not an all-inclusive test and review, just my opinion after the initial unboxing and trial. Is this the best generator for camping? Overall, I really think I'm going to be happy with this propane generator. I purchased mine on Amazon. See the link below.

    *A quiet **Generater.Systems** , love the dual fuel capabilities, camper is 50 amp but the adapter helps and found it still handles the load. Haven't taken a camping trip yet, that's in a couple of weeks. Will see how well it does over a long weekend.*

      All depends what you want to run. You’d generally want one capable of 220v for a house. I would ask an electrician. Thanks for watching!

    I have that exact generator and use it for camping as you do. The only problem I've had with it is a small amount of oil leak. I run it on propane and it will use much of a 20 lb bottle over a 3-4 day trip using it only for air conditioning and perhaps 3 hrs per day, since most of the time we are outside doing activities, fishing, etc. I usually run it from around 7-10pm, which is when quiet hours start at most camp grounds. It is nosier than I would like. The oil cap on mine was cross-threaded, so I ordered a brass one from Amazon. It has a probe that goes down into the oil tank to attract any metal shavings. Even at age 78, I'm able to lift it into my truck, but I do have a set of ramps that I can use if I need to.

    Useful tips:
    Starting the generator first, then flipping on the main breaker to feed the load is important because it will preserve a lot of appliances. When a generator is turning over to start, the frequency and voltage are out of tolerances, which can slowly damage voltage regulators, sensitive electronics, motor windings, etc. in many electrical appliances. In addition, it is equally crucial to turn main breaker off before shutting the generator off.
    Propane fuel does not cause prolong storage problems for carburetors, but gasoline does. I use Stabil fuel stabilizer along with Archoil fuel treatment for storing any gasoline engines. It’s also a good idea to plug up the exhaust to keep moisture out of the engine, in case one of the exhaust valves are open.

My 2 yr old Bluetti inverter AC300 with 2 B300 batteries was running low. I like how you showed where the battery was and how to connect it. I read my manual very well. I keep my fuel tank full of TRUFUEL ethanol free fuel and run it a few minutes after propane. A video of a guy who never ran anything but propane in his and the carb got rusted up and couldnt run it on gas. So maybe just as a preventative approach. I called champion and they said no issue running on propane with the fuel tank full.

      I think that something else is going on if the carb rusted up from running only propane. I grew up in the 80s and we had a Case model D tractor built in the 40s that ran on propane. We only used it in the spring and summer, and my dad never had a problem with that tractor. All he ever did to it was change the oil.

    • @caseymaples19xx
      @caseymaples19xx Рік тому +3

      Could have rusted from drawing high moisture air through the Carb, the carb is still in play even though not running gasoline as the butterfly and choke on the carb regulate the flow of propane in conjunction with the Garetson regulator. Although usually most carbs don’t have anything in them that will rust i.e. brass and aluminum.

    You are my "goto guy" for my Kubota. I recently learned about Champion generators and wanted to learn more. I was glad to see that you did a video on one. I already have Generac, Honda, and a crappy Honeywell HW2000i, and I am pretty impressed with what I have learned thus far about Champion. They seem to have good support and parts availability. I like the dual-fuel models which avoid the risk of old gasoline damaging the carb. due to the use of propane. Thank you for your videos. I used your advice and re-fabricated the loader clamp on receiver for my Kubota. It works great. Ron

    Really enjoyed this video. I'm glad you took the time to do a real practical usage video as opposed to a simple unboxing and startup. As it relates to the difference in power between the gasoline and propane, that's because gasoline is more dense from an energy perspective than propane for the same quantity of fuel. I recently purchased one of these generators as well and expecting delivery soon.

    Hi Sir, I just got the similar 4650/3650 201080 dual fuel model. The choke mode, as per the user guide, is not for starting the generator. One simply pushes the button while the dial is selected to choke for 2-3 seconds and then you move the dial to run mode, depress the button and it then starts/runs. I am very impressed with this unit!! I went to town and got a gentent for it as well because the power doesnt go out on nice warm sunny days with no wind. In terms of sound +3dBs doubles the power of the noise so a few dBs can be significant, however concur these units are quite acceptable for noise (test baby kept on sleeping). :-)

    I picked up a Champion 90014 open frame inverter generator. It has the same running watts as this model.
    Because it is open frame and doesn’t have electric start it is only 79lbs instead of 103lbs. It is also dual fuel but only is 3 DB louder than the enclosed model which I think is negligible. The weight shedding is more worth it in my opinion. Plus it’s easier to access for maintenance tasks. Pull start is super easy.
    Champion makes nice generators so you cannot go wrong either way.

    Just bought this on a great sale from Amazon and love your review and setup. I agree it is heavy but the handle really helps. I’ve been using a 3/4” plywood ramp but am seriously thinking about buying the harbor freight hinged ramps for my pickup. With the $500 off on the generator, I can spend the $150 for the ramps. They fit well in the bed and will allow me to easily get it in and out of pickup and will allow me to get an electric bike up there when I decide to get one. I love that it can run my camper a/c and electrical when needed. Thanks again. Very thorough video (might want to clamp that plywood down on the sawhorses next time though. Lol)

    I just ordered one of these from Amazon with delivery expected in a month or two . perfect timing! We just went 5 days without power at our home so i ordered this generator that i can use hopefully occasionally and use propane at least at the beginning of an outage since gasoline goes bad pretty quickly . Having the option of running either gas or propane is great.
    The inverter supplies power that is as clean as home power and the genny is QUIET compared to an open frame model.

    Hey Ed, I have the model made before this one--a little less capacity, but basically the same thing. Anyway, I replaced the start battery with a Shorai LFX14A4-BS12 lithium battery. Now I never have to trickle charge it and it starts right up, even after months of sitting. Just thought I'd let folks know that a lithium start battery is an excellent upgrade! You should follow the manufacturer's break in procedure. There are various takes on this, which may be better, one way is to inject some oil in the spark plug hole, reinstall spark plug, run 60 minutes without load, change the oil, use some oil conditioner. Restart, and vary the load up to 1/2 capacity and run with and without ECO mode to vary RPM for several hours. Change the oil again and it should be ready to use.

    I have the slightly larger 4650 version of this unit. I found that carrying a fuel can and loading the generator empty saved a few pounds. Still, taking it off the tailgate and turning to put it down seemed like more than my 50-something back should be doing. I use loading ramps.

  • @BradiKal61
    @BradiKal61 2 роки тому +3

    FYI, Champion doesnt provide a detailed break in procedure for this genny. I have contacted tech support and the most theyve told me plus what little is in the manual is that you should break in with the supplied 10-W30 oil for 5 hours with the option of running a full synthetic 5W-30 oil after that. Breaking in using eco mode is OK with Champion.
    MY process is going to be -
    Squirt a little Lucas Oil Conditioner into the cylinder after pulling the spark plug.
    Fill with 10-W30 (including a little Lucas conditioner) and cap with a magnetic dipstick.
    10 slow pulls on the pull start before replacing spark plug to prevent a dry start.
    Run for one hour on eco mode with a 100-200 watt load.
    Change oil, fill with regular 10W-30, run for one hour with eco mode OFF and a small load under 500 watts.
    Change oil again, run with eco mode on for one hour at 500 watts, a second hour at 1000 watts, alternating with eco mode on and off, run a third hour with a 1500 to 3000 watts with eco mode on and off.
    Change oil and fill with full synthetic 5W-30 oil.

    Hey there. I appreciate your videos!
    I bought this generator a month ago. My propane quick connect seems to have a very weak connection that leaks. Almost like it doesn't fit properly. I've searched this and many rv'ers have the same issue. Would it be too much to ask for a quick video close up on your connection operation? The other large question is if it will switch to gasoline automatically once the propane runs out?
    Great videos and I also purchased a Kubota based on these vids also ;)
