Both versions look like they have dynamic lighting; the main difference is texturing and transparencies. The Saturn version seems to have higher contrast. Texture quality is pretty much the same. Additionally, the Saturn version has VDP1 transparency, meaning it goes opaque over VDP2 layers (backgrounds) but is transparent over polygons, whereas the PlayStation doesn't have such issues.
PS1 version doesn't look great. Its clear as the day using phony,Screen filtered Half Transparency for lighting effects. I also notice unfiltered Textures and Zero Bip Mapping on that port. Saturn all the way.
The only things that really stand out for me are: the animated scene at the beginning of the saturn version and the dynamic lighting in the PS1 version. The framerate seems to be similar enough, they both slow down at certain points. Outside of what little story there is to them they're exactly the same as Pandemonium.
PlayStation version has better looking transparency effects which are almost entirely absent on Saturn, but the Saturn version appears to have more colors on screen. This is a tie, for me.
PS1 does looks clear while it’s still playable from playing the game while yet... I love the colors and pixelated look better on Saturn. It’s still a draw from both versions.
That's interesting. I bought the game for the Saturn, back then, as I remember reading it was the better version, out of the two, but... I may want to try the PS one too, now. I mean, visually speaking, the differences aren't as near as dramatic as we've seen in other circumstances, yet I agree with people saying PS MH looks better. Saturn port surely seems to be more fleshed out, in terms of both story-related content and sound work.
PS1 has great transparencies, but I think I prefer the saturated colors of the Saturn, overall it looks like a pretty competent port between the systems.
Both versions are nearly identical, aside from a few instances of transparencies in the PSX version that are lacking in the Saturn version. There are some slight differences in lighting and color between the two, such as the rotating tower in stage two, but that seems to be an artistic choice. Saturn version has a slightly more color saturation and the main character model looks nicer (she's strangely shaded on the Playstation version. Playstation also has that weird polygon warping effect where it can't draw straight lines. Overall, I'd say the game is equally good on both systems, but I'd give a very slight nod to Saturn for its richer color tones and character model, as well as the opening animated movie clip. But we're talking a 51-49 score. I think most gamers just assumed that any videogame to appear on both systems would be better on PSX, and the Saturn version would be an ugly, grungy throwaway. Today, we can see many examples where that isn't the case, but Sega just couldn't catch a break in those days. Oh, well, in any case, this game was immediately dismissed the second Super Mario 64 dropped.
Here, I expected a marginal (but clear) win from the Sony console with this one... but in the end, it was a virtual tie. The Saturn version was created later, but it managed to hold up well (unlike previous late ps1 to ss ports). Nice touch with using the Japanese release, btw 👍
The PS1 looks like it has a higher resolution and of course it does transparencies better/easier. I'll give the Saturn the advantage in 2D fighting games but the Playstation 1 is the 3D champ between the two.
the resolution is identical for both versions and generally better on Saturn. The big difference here is on the graphic effects like transparency which even if it also exists on the Saturn version is less beautiful and less fine than on PS1
Another tough one. The PS1 is a little sharper but the colors and lighting effects on the Saturn more than make up for it. Of course the transparency of the waterfall on Saturn could be problematic in gameplay. I also prefer the character sprites on the saturn. I like my women with a little bump in the trunk and PS1, while looking a tad sharper, looks like twigs.
Sega Saturn was such a great 32 bit console, but it struggles with using lighting effects in many of its games. I can see the PSX version, this character is surrounded by a beautiful glowing effect but on Saturn version is too flat that effect, like 2D drawing.
There is a huge difference for the saturn version with the lightning effects. The PS1 version is very "flat", and greyish, like his 15bit colors rendering.
it's an average game on both ... Of course the color contrast of the saturn's version is great but the visual effects are far away better on PS1 .... for fans maybe both versions are good .
A versão do Segasatan tá sensacional.
I'd say the Saturn wins this one. Sure the Saturn can't do transparencies without clever code. But where the PlayStation wins the battle, it loses the war. You see, on the Saturn version that tail is an actual part of her body. But on the PlayStation version, it's just a butt plug. Checkmate, Sony fans.
The Playstation version is superior, but the Saturn version could have been just as good. Looks like poor hardware utilization, which was common since the Saturn was a bitch to program for.
The Saturn loses as always...lower color depth , overblown brightness, no transparencies or blending, worse textures.....Saturn simply is not up to the task for 3D games, better stay playing those kidddie 2D games for children
the saturn version looks incredible and that intro was awesome. easy win for sega.
Both versions look like they have dynamic lighting; the main difference is texturing and transparencies. The Saturn version seems to have higher contrast. Texture quality is pretty much the same. I love the lighting and color saturation of the Saturn version.
I also prefer the original PANDEMONIUM! characters (Nikki and Fargus).
This one looks brighter and cuter to me. it also plays faster and cleaner than Pandemonium.
What do you think?
Vdp2 could’ve helped greatly with waterfall transparencies as proven by XL2
PlayStation version has better looking transparency effects which are almost entirely absent on Saturn, but the Saturn version appears to have more colors on screen. This is a tie, for me.
Yeah, the devs of the Saturn port once again couldn't be arsed to use the transparency features...
@@elgoog-the-third There are some transparency effects. The person clearly said that they're ALMOST absent.

The PS1 version looks WORSE. You clearly aren't paying attention.
Wow, Japan really did a number on Pandemonium!
Saturn instantly. It has a real intro not moving stills.
Magnum force Mopar Except the moving stills(?) are more interesting to look at since they don't take forever.
PS1 has great transparencies, but I think I prefer the saturated colors of the Saturn, overall it looks like a pretty competent port between the systems.

Actually there just few bad PS1 ports on Saturn, most of them are similar or just with few differences.
Very good analysis. 👍

Magical Hoppers seems to have improvements over Pandemonium on Saturn. Framerate seems better i guess
The PS1 looks like it has a higher resolution and of course it does transparencies better/easier. I'll give the Saturn the advantage in 2D fighting games but the Playstation 1 is the 3D champ between the two.
Nope, PS1 could do high res mode in 3D which Saturn could.
See VF2 and DOA. Saturn in the 3D champ.
the resolution is identical for both versions and generally better on Saturn. The big difference here is on the graphic effects like transparency which even if it also exists on the Saturn version is less beautiful and less fine than on PS1
This comment is made in line with the usual myth. Just graphical artifact differences
I like the dense and clean sound from Saturn, so I prefer to play on this console. Although without transparent textures :)
This time Playstation wins! but not by much, since the Saturn version is very honorable too.
i seriously like both. but if i had to make a choice i would choose saturn.
Ah yes: Pandemonium!
Looks like Crash combined with Donkey Kong
