- Anyone who has had chickenpox is at risk for a reactivation of the varicella zoster virus as shingles. If this occurs in the sensory nerve that innervates in and around the eye, complications on the cornea and inside the eye can cause pain and decreased vision. I had shingles in my eye. It's months later and still have itchy dry eye irritation affecting my sight, and sores in my hairline. I think they will never go away.
I have recurrent eye pain and headache due to daily use of the computer in work. This time I developed rashes with blisters on my left hand only. My doctor prescribed me Acyclovir which led me to think it could be shingles. My right eye hurt when I see the computer now which has happened before since my right eye is weaker than other and I have glasses accordingly. Could that be because of shingles and should I get an eye checkup?

davion grant Shingles around the eye is very painful and usually resolves in less than a month, although pain or inflammation can last longer. Fungal infections or blepharitis can be more chronic and recur over years but can be treated. You could consider checking with another eye doctor to see if medications or other treatment could help. John T Russell DDS an episode of shingles does appear to boost immunity but there is also value in an immunization. However, there are reports of increased eye inflammation after the vaccine so we like to wait a year before considering immunization and then monitor for any complications.

my retina is infected from acute retinal necrosis/uveitis. I over heard my opthamologist mention retinitis. and vitreous haze. I had this infection since April 29,2015 I was told it's 60% chance my retina going to detach. it's been 6 or 7 months already and my retina hasn't detach. will I be able to regain my vision back. I'm taking Valtrex durezol and prednisone and ketorolac drops. my opthamologist told me something is pulling on my retina but it's still attached.he said that's a good thing. Ok, so my Opthalmic Shingles actually occurred when the varicella zoster virus traveled along the "trigeminal" or V1 nerve. No wonder my scalp was so greatly affected. I also felt piercing nerve pain along the side of my head too, where the olfactory nerve would be, but I'm not sure if it caused any blisters since most were on my head, forehead & nose, caused by the V1 nerve, as you explained.

I had it 2 years ago from the right side of my head to my nose. My eye got so bad Dr Shin had to stitch half of my eye lid ugh.. they had given me a medicine that started with a Va… can’t remember the name of it but I had hallucinations the whole time I was on it. Thank goodness my husband looked it up on google and saw the side effects. Told the Dr and he gave me something else. It’s been 2 years and I still can’t feel the right side of my head down to my right eye. This is awful!!

@lisa Harrison you are stressed, i healed by doing exercise and stop eating chicken meat i figure it out my self, dermatologist only helps by giving you a medicine to dry out the cure the shingles but they can't do anything after the healing process the pain will remain for long time.

So should I be concerned having shingles WITHOUT the blisters, in and around the eyes? I get shingles, but don't get the horrible blisters. However, I DO get the pain. Right now I have pain on the left side of my face...forehead, left eye, and cheek. Is this of concern, beyond the pain?
@Marian Cook I would definitely be interested. I don't know a whole lot about shingles other than the fact that it stems from the chicken pox virus, and anyone that's had the chicken pox can and most likely will experience shingles at some point in their life. Fortunately for me I don't get the blisters, but it's still every bit as painful. Stress brings on attacks. I would love to get rid of it forever.
I also suffer from psoriasis dermatitis that is (not so lucky for me) in my groin area. They say that it also is a permanent addition to my life. Truth be known, I would rather have the shingles! Groin dermatitis is foul. Causes itching, redness, weeping skin, MORE itching, discomfort and discoloration of the skin, and best of all.....an unpleasant odor!! Wheeeee! I can shower 3 times and day and STILL get the funky smell. It has destroyed my sex life, makes me self conscious, and makes me feel like an outcast. It's beyond horrible. I just want it to go away forever!!

Isaac, thank you very much for the video. I'm 41 now. I had chickenpox and my mom did too both at early age. However, my dad told me that only one out of three in the family who had chickenpox will get shingles. Was my dad right? I don't have any shingles and I'm healthy.
Yes, it is estimated that 1 out of 3 people who had chickenpox will develop shingles in their lifetime. Hopefully with the shingles vaccine, this incidence will decrease.
I have it and it usually comes as you get older and your immune system gets weaker.

I had corneal shingles a couple of years ago and after I stopped taking the steroid drops my eye really flared up and my scar has become very big and bothersome. If I start taking the drops again, (I havent used them in a year) is there a chance that my scar will shrink back down?
Corneal scars generally fade with time on their own. If there is active inflammation, there is a chance that steroid eye drops can help decrease corneal haze or scarring. Would check with your eye doctor to see if this is an option for you. Hopefully your vision improves, thanks for the question!

+Isaac Porter, MD Thanks for your kind words. The transplant healed fine, although it left my eye a bit misshapen. When I had my recent cataract surgery, the doctor put in a toric lens to help with the severe astigmatism. I think my eye is gradually getting used to it. I have good and bad days, some of which I attribute to Lyrica side effects. My eye focuses differently. She prescribed a somewhat different eyeglass lens to help but its still weird. A word to all who read this.... get your vaccination and if you suspect you have shingles get seen immediately and treated with antivirals. You don't want this s..t.

My shingles started in my eye. I am three weeks in it. I now have UViritus and Adema in my eye. I am using steroid drops and keeping my eye dilated. I just stopped the Valtrex and even though I have been in lots of pain, now that I am off the Valtrex the pain is just unbearable all around my eye, my forhead, my nose and my hairline all the way to the back of my head. I am taking 1200 milligrams of Gabapentin.
My vision was so bad from this that will my glasses on I could not see a thing with the 20/20 test. But, that is starting to improve. How long do you think I will have this ungodly pain and any ideas on pain relief. Can I go back on Valtrex for pain relief.?? Please reply soon ! Desperate !!
+Kathy Miling my wife has been on and off steroid eye drops and Valtrex in her left eye for 10 yrs now with very little change, she tells me it is like looking through a piece of plastic all the time. She has been to a number of optometrist specialists and each one agrees that there is no cure but recognizing the triggers may help to reduce her outbreaks. Each specialist had there own opinion on treatment, 2nd specialist advised to stop taking the Valtrex and only use the steroid drops. That did not work very well at all. 3rd specialist advised if she did not take Valtrex with the steroid drops it was like putting gas on a fire. Frankly I don't believe any of them have real answer or the cure because if they did, my wife after having this for 10 + years and treatment after treatment would have seen some improvement. Every day she stresses that one day she may eventually go blind in both eyes because of this and the stress caused by her fears are not(I believe)helping the matter. It is odd that they can give you something for Herpes if you have it on your lips or elsewhere but really nothing for Herpes of the eye. There is no cure !

I had the chickenpox when I was 6-7. I’m 35 now and one day I was feeling this pinching crawling sensation on the right side of my head, then my ear started hurting my total “symptoms” lasted 8days and On the 8th day I woke up with one side of my face completely swollen with red rashes on forehead and two on eye lid as well as inside of one side of my ear. If I knew I had the shingles and it was with the very first symptoms I had I would have went to the ER that very day! It wasn’t until the 8th day I started feeling pain, wish I only knew. I’m taking two medications as well as a steroid but I’m so worried that the one eye I’m going to have eye problems, I’m just curious when should another ER visit be taken serious again? I don’t want to have vision problems 😰 I’m in so much pain even with pain medication 😪

It certainly is not the pleasant feeling having annoying skin rash, particularly when it is on your face. You just feel nasty andembarrassing.
