Again Great job!!... with everything Joe. Funny how you talk about how great yellow perch is. I'm an avid trout fisherman year round in NH. I actually had the opportunity to try a yellow perch last ice fishing season. I've heard people say they would prefer a yellow perch over a trout any day!..and they're not kidding. I couldn't believe how great that one tasted. Just with basic panko bread crumbs! 😋

Thank you. It’s a surprise to most anglers in the northeast especially here in Maine how tasty they are. We have them everywhere and they are so easy they get overlooked I think.

For those Coleman stoves, we stick a small piece of cardboard between the valve knob and the stove to keep the gas flame at a low level. Those valves are all like that, it's either on full blast or completely off.

Yellow Lake Perch are my # 1 favorite fish to eat !!! I've never had any luck catching Pike through the ice on tip-ups ! You given me a couple good ideas to try for next year, so thanks ! You had that one 10 lbs. pike ! Now that was a NICE FISH ! Oh, and I watched your ice fishing bonanza today ! That looked like so much fun ! I wish I could have been there for it ! It felt like I kind of was !!! I'll keep watching your video's because you are one of the nicest person's that I have never met ! L O L

Ha ha, funny. White perch are an invasive species in the Great Lakes. When I've fished Green Bay (a tributary of Lake Michigan) and caught white perch in the summer we've always fed those to the seagulls! Their flesh is very similar to white bass and you have to remove that red mud line in them, then they're fine. Yellow perch don't have that red mud line in them and so maybe that's why people in the midwest love yellow perch!

I haven't tried pike through the ice for about 20 yrs sine Lake Attitash, in Amesbury, MA.I was using shiners in the 8+" range, and they were tripping the traps all day. I like the rubber band on the trap holding the line. Looks like I will be trying soon, as well as breaking in my new eskimo 650 with some ice camping. I would add a fire ext to my gear... When I rig my traps, I add a shirt button to the line before I tie on my snap swivel. The button can be moved, just like your rubber band, to remind me where that trap was set. Regardless of how deep/far off bottom, I always leave the button just off the reel. Love watching your ice fishing videos. hope to bump into out there some day. (I won't set up in your pocket, or your old holes.)

Nice fish fry! Growing up in Maine, I found the most productive ice-fishing times were approximately 8:30 a.m. (the best), 10:30 a.m., and 1:30 p.m. I once caught 5 large, native brook trout in 15 minutes wiggling a half-dead bait off the bottom in 6 feet of water with the last rays of the sun (I also caught one earlier that morning for a total of 6). Usually, only 1 brook trout is caught on this entire lake in the winter. I carried back my fish in my bait bucket and woke my dad from his nap. He said he didn't want to see any bait. But I encouraged him to look at these bait. He was tickled pink. It reminded him of once catching 7 brookies in the same area decades earlier.

Thanks for another great video. I’m in PA and don’t have any ice yet. Rock bass are plenty here and we don’t like catching them. They are called trash fish here. I tried eating them when the water was warm and they were very fishy tasting . Like largemouth bass. They are much better through the Ice. So nice to be able to watch you get after them.

In Lake Erie yellow perch that get caught sell for 20 to 25 dollars a pound. where white perch are the crappier fish that sell for far far less. Yellow perch is the best tasting freshwater fish hands down.

Rubber bands are a great idea to mark your depth. I use a slip bobber knot on mine which have worked great. If using live golden shiners, I set them several feet off the bottom, sometimes even right below the ice, but dead bait I lay right on the bottom. Hot dogs seem to work well too for big pike, though I haven't had much luck on them.

The stigma of yellow perch being lower quality carries over to New Hampshire as well. For me, it was always seeing those black worms during the open water season. Some of my fishing buddies loved them though, and when I fished with them, they jumbos never got thrown back.

    • @JoeHollandFishing

    • @NHBackcountryGuide
      @NHBackcountryGuide 2 роки тому +1

@@JoeHollandFishing No way, I've never heard that. White perch are prized fish. Usually we keep the whites and crappie but release the yellow perch. Maybe the trout fisherman don't like them because they sometimes mix in the same water with lake trout? Our big lakes only allow 2 lines through the ice which forces people to target specific species.

The Friday fish fry is a wisconsin tradition, and mostly perch. I've heard Minnesota people who also leave them on the ice for the eagles. Crazy wrong! We have jumbo perch in Green Bay. Very tasty. Of course, everything is better with Frank's Red Hot 🥵. Be good Joe!

Yellow perch are one of the best eating fish there are! Top 3 for me are bluegill, perch, and northern pike. Where I live in southern wisconsin it's nothing to see a couple hundred, even a thousand people chasing perch in 70 feet of water in the winter. It's fun chasing those when the school is almost 10 feet thick of nothing but perch!

There no better tasting fish then yellow perch. They are so sweet and firm. One of the best perch baits I've found. That I have used for the past 50 years is. Eye ball. Catch a perch and dig the eye balls out. Put the 1 eye ball on the hook of a tear drop jig. It's a rugged bait and the more it gets beat up the better it fishes.

Fishing for pike early ice I like to find weeds in 10ft of water if the weeds are green and located next to deeper water you are golden. I also like to set my baits only about 4 to 6 ft under the ice max. when that bait is higher up the pike can see them from a further distance dependent on your water clarity

I use egg sinkers above my swivel. You can use tungsten . Better than the clip on ones . When the fish runs and if it gets in the weeds the line will slide through it and the fish won’t feel it. I sure do like watching you catch crappy and pike. The perch are great also.

Haha, It's always fun when they strike before the bait makes it all the way down.

I'd say food tastes good while camping to me because I have a lowered expectation of how good it will be overall, so I'm pleasently surprised when it comes out decent. Pretty much tricking me to think it's amazing, though I've probably half butchered whatever I'm cooking haha. On to day 3!

Joe, I absolutely love the show. You’re content is the type of stuff that I dream about, but my career and family life just hasn’t afforded me these types of opportunities. Not yet anyway. That being said, how about taking a lucky subscriber with you on one of your adventures?? I’d certainly be game for that. Keep up the great work

I’d stick to 9-11” perch because the skin on the larger fish is a little much. Hopefully you can sort through some of those jumbos and find some smaller fish lol.

Joe, have you ever used hot dogs for pike? Double hook on ends of the dog, pike love them and cheaper than chubs.
