Failed PCV Valve On Magnum 5.2L V8 - Possible Cause of Pinging

  • Here's some info that may be helpful for those who are diagnosing a pinging issue on a Mopar Magnum V8/V6 engine in a Dodge Chrysler or Jeep. Sometimes, PCV valves can fail open, causing a vacuum leak through the crankcase, sucking oil into the air intake, causing the engine to run lean (and run hotter) with pinging/spark knock. I still have a little bit of pinging, though it has decreased substantially since replacing the PCV valve.

PCV is a good place to start. I usually use the aluminum plenum plate from hughes engines with the steel shim gasket and indian head or aviation sealant on the lower plenum. It fixes a lot of issues. Also , putting some brillo pad in the valve cover baffle helps.

pcv valve can definitely cause problems, mine in my 95 5.2 dodge ram was very old and gummed up, I feel sorry for the truck honestly since the previous owners didn't take very good care of it, I've done a full tuneup plus just changed pcv valve to an oem mopar one and the truck accelerates alot better now after the pcv valve and seems to idle smoother, my pcv hose has a bit of a crack in it I need to fix though. These 2nd gen ram trucks have a fond spot in my heart, I went through a string of very junky used cars before the ram trucks...the rams even with their little quirks have been the utmost reliable for me for getting from point A to B.

Nice, helpful video. When I changed the pcv valve in my Dodge 5.2, I also bought a new crankcase breather too. (That was the device you showed at the start of your video on the rear side of the other valve cover) Those have filter media inside them and can get clogged up over time as well. It is also not expensive and easy to install. I also replaced both hoses as mine is a 1998 and they were dried and showed some signs of cracks. Safe travels.

Yeah. Looked down into the plenum with throttle body off. There wasn't an obvious plenum pan gasket leak. Just from an ancient PCV valve. Replaced it. This 1993 5.2 V8 Magnum only has 191,000 miles. Ready to replace the plenum pan with the aluminum Mopar one when it needs it.

Lol, idk why im on my wifes google account, i cleaned mine to brand new while back, easy to do, worked on my caddy also..im thinkin it might be the natorious plennum gasket, but i think its bn replaced already, cant complain, had a tenant die suddenly, so his daughters sold me his truck crazy cheap, $500. 900 in new tires 3months b4 he died getn out of truck, professional lowering kit, airbag suspension, remote cd carousel, towpackage, rims, frontend grill bling, ect,ect..guess he cared bt truck more than them, anyway, 100 in tuneup, oil change, iv put 12,000 troublefree miles on it in just 6months, st 10mpg, lol.still better than my hotrod bmw 540i. Id drive to eastcoast tonight, lots of gas money ofcourse, lol..i drive the shit out of it, everywhere..it has been really good to me.....got my money worth i think, im not picky tho, i own 6 v8's..expedition, dodge ram quadcab, cadillac fleetwood brougham, bmw 540i-m sport package with some legit mods, factory and aftermarket, and a 22ft stingray speedboat with chevy 427. It gets 3.5mpg, lmao..and nextweek take ownership of a 34ft fauxal airbus with v10 i think..im partial to the older cars..and i love this old truck, added matching A.R.E canopy and bed slideout kit and kayak racks..id rather work on my cars than make payments, thanks for the input, ill keep reading these forums

My brother put a 360 magnum in a 1984 Dodge pickup. He keeps blowing the plenum gasket. He even made a plate to try and fix it. Last time it was good for 3 days and it blew again. He refuses to blame the PCV. He says he unhooked it and it’s open to atmosphere. Do you think it could cause the problem?
