    I'm glad you like it. Couldn't stand mine, also it seems impossible to get the (hideously overpriced and needlessly bulky) mic adapter here in Malaysia. Anyway, I hated it, just like I hated the Hero 5 as well. So, I gave it to my Daughter and bought myself the DJI Osmo Pocket. Now THAT is a great little camera.

    Hey brother. Ive been watching a ton of reviews for vlogging setups for this particular gopro and I want to say that I really admire your genuine thoughts. I feel like the others have something to sell (besides affiliate marketing below) and for me anyway it was hard to find what I was looking for. Anyways thank you for the review and look forward to your 2k!! ✌👊💛

      @UsAgainstTheWorld  5 років тому +1

      Yeah, I've noticed sometimes when using quick capture it'll "freeze" (screen still on but not able to interact with it) after stopping the recording, and yeah a battery pull is required in that situation. I'm planning on doing an update video soon in which I'll go over all the issues I've encountered since I posted this video.

    • @UsAgainstTheWorld
      @UsAgainstTheWorld  6 років тому

      You can if you get a cage for it. I have this one and it works great: amzn.to/2RtkvEp You will need to find a way to keep the mic and adapter from dangling around though, and if you're going that far you might as well get the Rode VideoMicro (amzn.to/2PBGYBT) which already has a cold shoe mount, better audio, and way better wind protection. That's the mic I use for my normal vlogging setup (on a Fuji X-T100) and I love it. It pushes the entire setup to around $550 including the gorillapod (this is the one I'd use for that setup: amzn.to/2PzifhA), but for the quality of the footage I still believe that's an excellent value. Safe travels and happy vlogging!

    • @SilverfoxJB
      @SilverfoxJB 5 років тому

      Time for you to drop the Gorilla pod and get the Fotopro uF02 - Cheaper, lighter, no popping out joints, I've got both and I simply never use my gorillapod, IMHO it's overpriced crap. Actually much like my GoPro Hero 7 Black, the fact that a camera in 2019 still cannot be turned on and off without holding your finger on a button and hoping that this time it will turn of and not just change some settings! I hate that thing. Much like I hated the Hero 5 whose screen stopped working after 2 months, I swore I would never buy another one and then I did! Fool me twice - Shame on Me! :(

    Good review, i started my vloggin with a GoPro Hero 5, then i moved to a Nikon A900, then a Fuji X-2. I have come to the conclusion the set up I had with the Hero 5 was the easiest and ticked all the boxes, check my video here ua-cam.com/video/QFedsahZSeA/v-deo.html for the external mic set up. I am now seriously considering going back to GoPro for vlogging and purchasing the Hero 7. Thanks for the video it has encouraged me even closer to buying one!

    Not sure you’ll actually see this... BUT... This adapter price issue ($49) has existed for MANY YEARS with GoPro... the price has ALWAYS been $49 & they ALWAYS have a shortage!!! I felt it was a sales tactic initially, but now I’m beginning to believe it’s just a straight up failure somewhere in the production chain or with the manufacturer...
    Anyway... I’ve got a serious question or 2... I was shopping for an adapter years ago when I first purchased a 6 Black.. I couldn’t find it anywhere, same price, but MANY REVIEWS SAYING IT DIDNT EVEN WORK... so i just gave up...
    In this video you claimed this “is the ONLY ADAPTER THAT WORKS” with a GoPro - But there are third party Mic Adapters and Mics that claim to be plug and play out there...
    Have you tried any of those?
    Also, I now own a Hero 3 Silver+, and the 5, 6, and 7 Blacks... since the ports are different, does the OEM adapter come with another adapter to retrofit the old port??
    I’ll assume that’s a HUGE “NO” (because god forbid for $50 they’d add something reasonable), but what about if I add an aftermarket retrofit adapter to the current USB-C adapter??? WILL IT WORK??
    Also (and lastly, I promise), WHY DID SO MANY PEOPLE CLAIM THE GOPRO BRAND ADAPTER DID NOT WORK back when I was shopping for this??? Is this still the case now?? Are there certain formats or mics that maybe don’t work?
    Also, crap, I forgot one more... How to I POWER the GoPro externally if the port is jammed up with a mic adapter? Does the adapter have a pass thru power port?

    Open that piece of $50 and do a youtube video of the opening of this item,... you will hit so many viewers, that alone that will financially reimburse you for the possible(but not necessary ) damage of it. Ask the youtubers if any electronic wizard would know what you are looking at,... I would not be surprised that there is only hot air in there, and not much more for those 50$. Remember the GoPro company was doing really badly for a while, and they needed to make money somehow....

    The issue with this microphone adapter is not even its price.. the real issue is why is it even there - not to mention the size of it. GoPro, just build that damn thing inside the next gen GoPro just like you did in old GoPros..until then I am sticking with Chinese action cameras who Allow this incredible function encapsulated in their cameras.. for the fraction of the price.

    With the H6 I had the problem that sometimes on Quick Capture, audio was not recorded, like randomly.... That sucked since we found out only after we came back from an expedition to Bolivia.... Have you seen that behavior on your setup with the H7?

    • @UsAgainstTheWorld
      @UsAgainstTheWorld  5 років тому

      We had that problem with our H5 while snowboarding, but that's probably because of the temperature and how much that absolutely ruins the ability for batteries to function correctly. We haven't taken the H7 into those conditions yet, but we we'll definitely be doing a lot of that in the coming months. We're hoping that since this setup is much smaller it'll be easier to keep close to our body while not in use to keep the battery warm.

      Maybe they'll learn from Sony (RX0 mk II) and include a mic port on the next version, or at the very least allow any of the super cheap usb-c to TRRS adapters to work (kinda like Fuji is doing with the X-T30 for headphones). It's something they might even be able to push out as a firmware update to all models since the GP5.

    The mic adapter is $50 because GoPro is a scummy company. I totally hope they get swallowed up by the competition. Osmo pocket looks much more interesting.

    • @UsAgainstTheWorld
      @UsAgainstTheWorld  5 років тому

      While yes I think $50 for a mic adapter is way too expensive, it's not a necessary accessory for most people. The internal mic on the GP7 is plenty good in most cases, and for the average consumer they don't need the audio to be the best it can because they aren't putting out videos, it's just for their personal use. Also, what competition? No other action camera has come anywhere close to GP. Some may have better features, but again for the average consumer they just want something that works and the brand recognition is everything. Here's to hoping GP will put a normal mic input on the next one, or at the very least no require a big proprietary adapter.
      I was definitely intrigued by the osmo pocket at first, but the GP7 is so much more versatile. Yes, the osmo will have more stable footage in more situations, but these days you can buy a gimbal for the GP for under $100 and get the same or better results than the osmo.

    • @SilverfoxJB
      @SilverfoxJB 5 років тому +1

      @@UsAgainstTheWorld Each to their own of course. But there is plenty of competition out there from the excellent Sony FDR X3000 which I wish I had bought instead of falling for the GoPro Hype, and the latest models from SJ Cam and a few other companies. As for spending a further $100 on a Gimbal - Suddenly you action camera is much more expensive, and most importantly to me, much bigger to carry around. And setting up a gimbal every time you want to use your camera. Well, that get's old very quickly. I have not used mine for about 6 months. Regardless, I enjoyed your well made vlog.

    • @RubberontheroadIndonesia
      @RubberontheroadIndonesia 5 років тому

      @@UsAgainstTheWorld ....Plus if you buy all the attachments for the Osmo it is almost the same size as a DSLR...Defeats the purpose. They perhaps should have made it slightly larger to accept all the add ons in a simple form factor. My guess is it wouldn't be much larger. AND you wouldn't need your phone hanging off the side and using 2 hands to hold it all together. WHAT WERE THEY THINKING!!!!

      For the purposes of the video I wanted to show how you don't need anything other than the GP, adapter, and the mic, but usually I put the GP in a cage (like this: amzn.to/2RCk8Lr) and velcro (amzn.to/2LV8ar6) the adapter to the top of the cage. In most cases tho, the setup shown in the video will work just fine, all you have to do is use one finger to keep the adapter in place along the back of the GP. I'm planning another video to go over some other possible setups for different use cases.

    hello! how many SD cards do you usually bring to a trip videoing in 4k?

    • @UsAgainstTheWorld
      @UsAgainstTheWorld  5 років тому +2

      I usually bring one main card and one backup, both 128gb. I'm diligent about copying footage to a backup drive (or two) and clearing out the card once a day or so when on the road. Not only to clear up space on the SD card, but also because I don't trust SD cards not to fail. Even the reputable brand name cards fail sometimes so I'd much rather be safe than sorry. I'd say an average day's worth of footage is ~30gb for us, but that's also mostly 2.7k since 4k doesn't have the option for the linear FOV (plus we post in 1080p anyway). For 4k, I'd probably budget 50gb per day if you're not planning to backup the footage every day like we do. Hope this helps!

    • @UsAgainstTheWorld
      @UsAgainstTheWorld  5 років тому +1

      Yeah, it would be ideal if the adapter wasn't needed. The mic on the 7 is so much better than the 5 and it's good enough in most situations that I don't bother with the adapter when mounting it on my helmet or other places where it would just get in the way.

      Us Against The World I agree. HERO7 built in mic is much better. I finally decided to get HERO7 and I feel the same way. After I tried it , I think it’s worth the upgrade.

    Yeah, but you can’t charge (or use external power supply) and record at the same time with the Mic Adapter, the audio and video goes out of sync.

    I am torn between this and osmo pocket ... For vlog, travel . Thoughts ?

      That's a tough one. A few things I've noticed from the reviews and specs:
      - GP7 has more FOV options
      - GP7 has a significantly better builtin mic
      - Osmo motion timelapse and face tracking modes are pretty sweet
      - Osmo size is impressive
      - GP7 ecosystem is (obviously) so much more established
      - GP7 is actually rugged
      - Osmo is more stable in more situations
      - Video quality is pretty much the same in most situations
      For me, the atrocious audio on the Osmo is a deal breaker. Also, because the GP7 fits into the greater GoPro ecosystem nicely, there are solutions for the problems the Osmo solves (except the size of the camera obviously). As such I'm holding off on the Osmo, though if you don't have a GP7, don't need anything super rugged, and are fine waiting for the mic adapter to be released then I don't think you could really go wrong with the Osmo. Hope this helps!

      If you think the camera will get wet or banged around then get the gopro as it's waterproof and durable. Otherwise the Osmo is good.

      From what I've seen on YT it doesn't seem to me that the GP7 has better audio than Osmo.

      @@nofurtherwest3474 I have never seen on YT others than people just speaking in front. Recording the surroundings, f.e. traffic, would be a better and more useful comparison. Stereo is 'state of the art' 😉

    Have you run into audio leading the video when using the attached mic? Mine does almost every time. I'm making a short vlog about it - but there are others out there that also talk about it. I agree that it is the handiest camera for vlogging or trip documenting (and sports, etc). I have the Osmo and like the face tracking but I usually use the GoPro. Still working on my studio setup but that is another story.

      @@UsAgainstTheWorld I'm getting closer (I think) to the reason. I notice that if there is external power and mic then, if you just fire it up, the audio will lead by .22 seconds. Starting the system and THEN hooking up external power and mic seems to work correctly. All this seems very consistent but will do a few more tests. I've almost finished the vlog with lots of examples and have just the final tests to finish. I suspect if I disable stabilization then it might work. It works fine on the 6 and 5 so it seems logical. Or... not... ;-}

    • @newbievloggerandphotograph2438

      So far with multiple tests, the problem is with external power, If you have it, then you must reset it after the movie starts if you are also using an external mic. I've pretty much identified it as the culprit but am will to listen to others... just can't see any other variables.

    What setting do you use for the video vlogs?

    • @UsAgainstTheWorld
      @UsAgainstTheWorld  5 років тому +2

      For normal filming with the HERO7 I use 2.7k 24fps in the linear FOV mainly because 4k only offers the wide FOV. I have ProTune on with GoPro colors, max ISO 800 and sharpening at medium. Everything else is set to the defaults. Oh and HyperSmooth on, obviously.

      I've never used it, but based on what I've seen from other reviews and sample clips, I like the GP7 better. It's just more usable in more situations. The quality of the osmo pocket's footage is incredible for its size tho.
