I like how realistic Barney is as a character. There's multiple spots in the film where he gets tired of Ron and you think it's gonna be a third act breakup, but there isn't. He's just highly emotional going through things that middle school kids do. His relationship with Ron feels really genuine because it's earned. Friendship isn't perfect, people. There's always gonna be some turbulence, and that's okay.
But nature isn't friendly or dangerous. Nature is savage, not just in a negative way. So yeah, it is more secure to keep in your room, but do we have to always live in 100% secured places ?
@@louisduarte8763 yeah, and with Asthma of course. But hey, i call it natural selection ^^ To be fair, tho movie was good, but i am too technoloyphobic to really like its message. I find these kind of pro-100% technology wrong, but i understand how it can be loved by others.
Yeah we did that a lot as kids 🤣 I feel like it helped teach me caution when my parents or an adult wasn't around while fueling that childlike thirst for adventure. I guessed it helped the woods were sandwiched between two relatively safe neighborhoods.
This movie had far more heart than I expected. Yes there are some "Disney" moments in it but I feel the movie was as much anti Disney and anti Google as it was anti Social Media. Shockingly good.
I don't think it was anti-Disney, especially since it's basically a "Disney" (20th CF) movie and had some Disney references. I did like this movie more than Encanto.
I liked how they updated Barney's friend board. How it starts off selfish but changes to be more considerate of Ron and simplified with few conditions. Not " stay within 6 feet sometimes," just "stay with me." How the creator tries to compare the board to his algorithm. It really stuck out how needlessly complex his idea of friendship was.
It was also a really great way of showing they're both learning about each other. Barney starts off wanting a 'friend' (robot) pretty much for his own purposes, someone to do things for him and make him look better so kids at school don't make fun of him so often. But over time, as Ron learns more about how to be a good friend to Barney, Barney learns about how to be a good friend to Ron. It really IS a two-way street, and the both needed to learn from each other to make it work.
@madkatzproductionz6685 exactly, Barney redefines what it means to be a friend and changes the board to show his new understanding to Ron. This let's us the viewer see how he's learning what it really means to be a friend as they both grow.
I felt the same way as Doug about this film. I thought this looked like a cute film and it was by a different studio from the usual Disney/Pixar/Dreamworks ones so I wanted to support it. Ended up being such a relevant movie for modern times with great jokes and some nice messages
I like how you don’t ever let yourself get burned out by how many movies you watch for Disneycember. You like to keep an open mind and try to find the good in each of these films, shows, and games
One of my favorite characters in the movie would be the grandmother. In the movie it is mentioned that she is a former citizen of the Soviet Union and a staunch anti communist. Then, later on, you see her breaking through a high tech security door with a high powered drill. At that point I seriously wondered what her backstory was and what she did in the past. She seems like a rather cool grandmother.
YES! I've been waiting all month for this. This movie was SO good! It sucks that it under performed at the box office. Granted thats not the movies fault cause the marketting and advertising was shit. But this movie felt like it had so much to say about how people connect these days. As well as how a lot of friendships dont feel genuine any more cause nowadays people just connect online. Also how big businesses track and spy on us through our devices. God this movie was unbelievably well done
i thought it was quite good. the lead up with ron asking rich why he hit him and rich responding with 'cuz i don't like you' and then ron going, 'oh. well okay, that's how you deal with this.' it was very good. ron wouldn't have ever considered hitting rich or people he didn't like like the cop if rich hadn't done it first and given him a reason. felt like that was a good teaching moment.
I watched this with my 7 year old and fiance. We all couldn't stop laughing hysterically at this movie. This is a rare time when we all are laughing at the same movie. I do not regret getting this movie. I love the hidden messages behind it.

Thank you so much for recommending this movie! Watched it the other night and loved it. Ron's lack of programming made him a blank slate, and both he and Barney have to build a friendship from the ground up, with mutual learning and engagement. What a BRILLIANT contrast to the typical bot, the supposed "best friend out of the box" turning out to be the one-sided, skin-deep affair we so often see in social media friends and the like.
I really like how ron is represented. where the other b-bots are designed so that they are supposed to be kids friends, but they just tell the owner what they wanna hear and they aren't allowed to make mistakes. Ron, however, makes mistakes and adapts to barneys needs as he spends time with him...like an actual friend would.
I was so curious about this film when it came out and was so happy we sat down to watch it. I loved this film and it might be one of my favorite animated movies to have come out this year right next to Luca. I was not expecting it to be so charming and funny and Ron is just adorable that when you see him grow into his own and then the third act hits and what happens I shed some tears. I hope the new company get the recognition it deserves and becomes successful!
I watched it today on a whim when I realized that it was on Disney + and OH MY GOD was this movie fantastic!! The message, the relationship between Barney and Ron and dealing with their personal struggles and overcoming them. It was so SO charming and I enjoyed my time with it!
Saw this movie and I like it. The whole fish out of water scenario and how Ron's voice actor was so good. The humor was great and I love that with each interaction between Ron and Barney you could tell their friendship grows just like real life. Sometimes they annoy each other and other times they laugh it's so realistic to see a child friendship grows like that.
The movie had some surprisingly dark humor at times and fun humor. Also, it had heart and the message of social media without it beating you over the head. The actor that plays Barney and Ron are great, separately and together. The heart warming moments worked very well and the scenes people were in danger you felt there were stakes. Great movie
One thing I loved about this film was how it showed that you might have a really different relationship with people you used to be friends with only a few years ago. Damn is that isn't a real life truth.
Went to this on a whim for date night and enjoyed it. I really like how they show what happens when things go too far with technology and how damaging social media can be.
I have a weakness for slapstick, so when I watched the trailer I was hooked. As soon as hit Disney plus I watched it and I agree completely with Doug. The second third act was unexpected but still works. Love this movie and want more.

I really enjoyed this movie and recommend it to everyone. My only personal nitpick was that I thought that Andrew’s downfall could have maybe been a little bit more extreme besides from just losing his job. I mean the dude was just so *casual and heartless* about wanting to leave a kid for *dead* and then trying to *capitalize* on when Ron had to save Barney like nothing happened. I know that he got blackmailed for other stuff but it still kinda irked me that he didn’t face more consequences for his actions.
@@joshinthesauce4636 indeed, he’s pretty much the stereotypical and one-dimensional old business bad guy who only cares about fame and profit. It was so obvious that he was going to be the villain that I’m just surprised that no one in the bubble company really picked up on it or called him out.
I was sort of worried that everyone was gonna hate this one except me, and I’m glad I was wrong. It’s so consistently funny, the animation is wonderful, and the ending sacrifice has legitimate consequences and doesn’t just get undone. Also, Barney and Ron somehow have a more convincing, developed friendship than most characters I see in anything. You see it form, you see it grow and change, you see it challenged- even with Ron being a robot, this feels so human.

This film really didn't get enough love from Disney. It's all over the place with its messaging but I really liked the idea that you can't just stand around waiting for someone else to hand you your friends and how selfish that makes you look.
Wow, I never even heard of this movie until now, I surely didn't expect such a positive review! It makes me wish I did check the movie out! Now, for my playlist of all DisneyCember reviews in chronological order, this movie came out on October 15, 2021, so that's between Shang Chi (September 1) and Eternals (November 3).
I've pretty much always had the same outlook on social media as Doug, and I was in high school when it became a thing. I get the feeling that was kind of the age range of folks that were really gonna make Twitter and other social media sites take off.
I really liked this movie but my only problem with it is that it kept feeling like the end and it never was. My niece wanted to go somewhere and I kept telling her we would go when the movie was over. I would get to a part where it looked like it was going to end and I would tell her it’s almost done, just to find out there is another hour of the movie left. It happened again and I said ‘okay it’s almost done’ but there was actually still thirty minutes of the movie left. It happened a third time (which is the time critic was talking about) and suddenly there was even more. Maybe I have to watch it again without me niece there rushing me through it, but it just kind of felt like it could have ended sooner and just never did.
I really like how the overall message of this movie isn’t as obvious as you initially think it’ll be, with an idea like this you think it’s just gonna be an 1:47:00 long buildup to them saying “Technology sucks, get a life asshole” but it’s not, the Bubble Bots are still around at the end of the movie but since they now all have Ron’s coding they make friends with the kids the old fashioned way instead of just being a walking, talking iPhone like they used to be, it’s nice when a movie can deliver a message about the importance of friendship without just bashing technology

Lloyd: "An AI robot as a friend? Nothing could replace a reliable cat." Chaplin: "Guess what, Lloyd? Doug and Brad both have the new iPad. Lloyd: "Sigh."
As someone with ASD, I really connected to Ron and his struggles. Just because we're "malfunction" doesn't mean we're broken or worthless. We all have value and this movie perfectly portrayed that for me
I didn't even realize it was a Fox film till the opening credits. Put it on as a "oh i remember catching a trailer for this" kind of thing. So glad I did. Our whole house was laughing all through the movie and it had a very good message.
I don't know what message _TMVTM_ was trying to convey anymore. I just seemed like an excuse to have humans fighting robots in an over-the-top cartoony fashion rather than having a message to deliver.
I'm glad you enjoyed the movie for all the reasons i did. I'm 32 and just watched it a month ago. It was really enjoyable, I actually didnt have a problem with the ending act. I liked all the characters except the one obvious consistent character you are not supposed to like so really as long as you are doing something productive with them I am all for it. I kinda wanted the movie to cop out of its ending by some form of bla bla bla but applaud it for ending the way it did. Good movie, knew I was gonna love the movie the moment those two kids were bonding and then their bots say no match so they end their convo dejected and go opposite ways. Its the little things really.
Oh yeah that 'no match' moment was not only telling of algorithms, but about how people can often judge others and not make friends with other people based of some arbitrary interests.
I felt it was just alright, but I did like the message. I liked that it didn't completely demonize technology. And my husband and I liked that the characters didn't follow the tropes you expected them to except maybe the villain. Like the bully didn't stay the bully. The popular girl didn't stay the popular girl. Barney wasn't completely the underdog. They were just kids going through insecurities. They all had growth. Ron, we felt, was trying a little hard to be Baymax. But we did like him.
the bully also wasn't being purposefully mean he thought he was being funny and didn't seem to realize it was hurting peoples feelings which is how alot of bully's actually are
My thought is same as you, when I first watch the trailer for this film I thought it's just gonna be another Clichés kid's and robot friendship bon movies, but when I watch it I was pleasantly surprised. The message is clever, the jokes are funny, the characters are memorable in their own way, the animation is amazing and I can't wait to see more movie from this studio. It's not perfect, near but not yet, but for what it is, it is a subversive masterpiece and a pretty great movie for kid.
This looks like Blue Sky Studio’s final movie, even though it’s Fox’s deal with Locksmith Animation. It reminds me of Aardman’s claymation stories, wish Disney distributed more foreign animated movies like that!
I really miss Blue Sky Studios. They could’ve made more movies rather focusing solely on the Ice Age and Rio franchises to keep itself alive(the reason it’s barely breaking ground compared to Disney,Pixar,DreamWorks,Illumination,Sony, and Warner Bros.).
@@McCraeTheMediaLover Blue Sky broke ground with some movies like with the first Ice Age and I also love Rio. But the studio didn’t have the big scale that Disney and Dreamworks did.
I went to this one day when I was just looking for something to do and it was great. It had the perfect balance of light moments and darker moments as well without taking away from the entertainment value of the movie. I also just tend to enjoy movies where the wierd kid makes friends with someone unusual. And cool that Barney's grandma and dad were relatable too not total dicks
Lol it’s “Absalom” not “Alchazar”. But honestly yes, I laughed every single time the joke came up. I watched it after watching this review and I honestly loved it. So glad I checked it out. Did not expect it to be that good! Didn’t expect to tear up at the end. SPOILER… Why do animated kids movies always kill the innocent robot off at the end. Iron giant, big hero 6, this movie. Gets me every damn time
I never realized doug walker was anti-twitter. I mean I saw that review of Son of the Mask and never caught on that he would make it a reference to an actual dislike of Twitter. I actually thought it was just him joking around
I loved Ron's Gone Wrong. Also, as a Brit, I was pleased to learn that the studio that animated this film is based in London. The UK should have more animation studios IMHO
I just watched this yesterday with my husband. Now, he doesn't like animated movies. He's one of those that says they're just for kids. But by God, he LOVED this movie. And so did I! I was laughing my ass off when ron beat the crap out of those kids. And the ending made me weep! WATCH IT!!!
I enjoyed the movie. I felt that the background characters were quite generic. It's like they just appear. The cool kid, the bully kid. I've seen it before! Also, you know, it's a Disney film because dead mother!! Ding ding ding!! But I agree. A good movie.
I do agree that the second climax was out of nowhere. Overall, I like its humor, characters, story and lesson. It's also much better than The Emoji Movie. Best animated film of 2021.

I love how the bad guy is just the Apple CEO
I don't know why, but I laughed every time at "Absalom" haha!
another drop in the bucket of 'films that are better than you expect'
I really enjoyed this movie and recommend it to everyone.
My only personal nitpick was that I thought that Andrew’s downfall could have maybe been a little bit more extreme besides from just losing his job. I mean the dude was just so *casual and heartless* about wanting to leave a kid for *dead* and then trying to *capitalize* on when Ron had to save Barney like nothing happened. I know that he got blackmailed for other stuff but it still kinda irked me that he didn’t face more consequences for his actions.
The only real problem I had with this movie is that Andrew’s actions were more cartoony in his villainy in that he was too quick to let Barney die.
@@joshinthesauce4636 indeed, he’s pretty much the stereotypical and one-dimensional old business bad guy who only cares about fame and profit. It was so obvious that he was going to be the villain that I’m just surprised that no one in the bubble company really picked up on it or called him out.
I really enjoyed this movie, too - for all the same reasons. And you are 120% right about Arthur Christmas!
Actually, Ron called Barney Absalom, not Alcazar. Otherwise, spot-on review, Doug.
“ABSALOM?!”
@@gagazordon4235
Hasta la vista
@@gagazordon4235 "Hi Absalom?! I'm Absalom's B Bot!
Came here for this.
That line kills me every time Ron says it.
This is possibly the best animated film in recent memory. Absolutely see it if you haven’t
I agree, though it’s not my favorite animated movie. I watched it early this year. It was great.

This movie surprised me. Awesome flick, very refreshing.
This film really didn't get enough love from Disney. It's all over the place with its messaging but I really liked the idea that you can't just stand around waiting for someone else to hand you your friends and how selfish that makes you look.
First off, it's "Absalom?" and secondly, yes, this IS a great show.
Definitely gonna see this film a watch, looks quite fun.
Me too, it looks delightful and fun, two things that I always like in a family movie!
I saw it when it came out, it's incredible.
You and your family will absolutely enjoy it
Wow, I never even heard of this movie until now, I surely didn't expect such a positive review! It makes me wish I did check the movie out!
Now, for my playlist of all DisneyCember reviews in chronological order, this movie came out on October 15, 2021, so that's between Shang Chi (September 1) and Eternals (November 3).
It's on disney plus now so I'm gonna have to check it out sometime soon
i had the same problems with act act 3, especially when barney uses the power of uh.. "love" to resolve one of the biggest issues.
This video is essentially what I thought of the movie as a whole, and I can’t wait to see what the animation studio has in store for us next!
I gotta say, Doug pretty much says all my thoughts on this film
Funnily enough I just decided to watch this yesterday. I was also pleasantly surprised by it, and hope Locksmith make more in the future.
This movie brought back the feeling I had while watching the iron giant. That’s a hard feeling to get back
It seems like it took inspiration from "The Iron Giant" in the best possible way. Absalom?! even looks like Hogarth!
I've pretty much always had the same outlook on social media as Doug, and I was in high school when it became a thing. I get the feeling that was kind of the age range of folks that were really gonna make Twitter and other social media sites take off.
Sounds like Gir if Gir were not completely useless.
Me: WHY IS THERE BACON IN THE MUFFINS!?
Gir: Cause we were out of nachos!
It's funny that I saw this on Christmas and I had the exact same reaction as Doug. Great movie
I went with my family to watch this movie (first time in the pandemic). I had low expectations. I was really surprised about how good it was
You were sucked
Just finished watching it and oh my god, it was so good! Seriously wish I got to see it in theaters. Trailers really undersold it
I haven't watch the Movie yet,but seeing that it's receiving well and made by the same person who made Arthur Christmas makes me want to see it.
I could tell because barney looks like Arthur
@@Yourmommy19532 Yeah it all makes sense now.
I still can’t believe they got away with that white stain joke
This review actually got me to watch the movie and I have no regrets. It's great.
I had the exact same reaction you did!
Are you talking about how Ron calls Barney ABSALOM!?
Doug please do a Nostalgia Critic review episode of this film one day please. That jokes and gags you could come up with in it.

This is a different guy. Theme Park Avenue is the original.
I watched this movie with my boyfriend and I wasn't expecting the best but when I saw it we both loved it soooo much!!
This movie deserves more credit. It was nice and refreshing.
Lloyd: "An AI robot as a friend? Nothing could replace a reliable cat."
Chaplin: "Guess what, Lloyd? Doug and Brad both have the new iPad.
Lloyd: "Sigh."
As someone with ASD, I really connected to Ron and his struggles. Just because we're "malfunction" doesn't mean we're broken or worthless. We all have value and this movie perfectly portrayed that for me
I didn't even realize it was a Fox film till the opening credits. Put it on as a "oh i remember catching a trailer for this" kind of thing. So glad I did. Our whole house was laughing all through the movie and it had a very good message.
Underrated for how good the movie really is! 😊
At first, I thought it was going to be a ripoff of The Mitchells vs The Machines but I was surprised. It was actually a pretty good movie.
Mitchell’s sucks
I don't know what message _TMVTM_ was trying to convey anymore. I just seemed like an excuse to have humans fighting robots in an over-the-top cartoony fashion rather than having a message to deliver.
Ron looking like a tic tak with eyes
Touché
But we did like him.
the bully also wasn't being purposefully mean he thought he was being funny and didn't seem to realize it was hurting peoples feelings which is how alot of bully's actually are
I know it's not Disney but PLEASE do a nostalgia critic on "the adventures of Pinocchio" it's a terrifying live action Pinocchio
Such and underrated gem from Disney this year (well fox).
I've honestly heard and seen so little of this that I was partly convinced it wasn't real.
I've seen this story before. But that doesn't make it bad of course.
With the many attempts at remaking short circuit, it’s funny how this is the best homage and best new version well ever get
This looks like Blue Sky Studio’s final movie, even though it’s Fox’s deal with Locksmith Animation. It reminds me of Aardman’s claymation stories, wish Disney distributed more foreign animated movies like that!
Well it is a UK studio formed by 2 people from Aardman. Don't know where you got the Blue Sky stuff from
@@joevictor53 the way Disney marketed this movie is like what they did to the last Blue Sky movie.
*wish
SPOILER…
Why do animated kids movies always kill the innocent robot off at the end. Iron giant, big hero 6, this movie. Gets me every damn time
I completely agree. It is a great movie!
I LIVE IN THE SHED!
Ummm.....I had like 0 expectations for this as well but now I'll check it out. 😮
I saw this last week by chance and I agree it was a good watch. I loved all the social media legal violations that were depicted so brazenly.
I just got done watching and I loved every second of it. I could relate to Barney trying to fit in feeling like an outsider when I was a kid.
I never realized doug walker was anti-twitter. I mean I saw that review of Son of the Mask and never caught on that he would make it a reference to an actual dislike of Twitter. I actually thought it was just him joking around
I didn't know this was a Disney film. Boy, they really own almost everything on this planet.
WATCH IT!!!
This film and "Arthur Christmas" are now at the top of my list for new films to watch!
Me before seeing this review (I haven’t seen this movie either): Oh he’s probably gonna hate this one-
A few secs in: Oh wow, did NOT expect this! 😳🧐
I wasn’t planning on watching it until I saw this review. It was really good!! I’m glad I saw it now
I came into this movie with low expectations and I'm glad it proved me so so wrong!
This is one of the first movies that ever made me think
I enjoyed the movie. I felt that the background characters were quite generic. It's like they just appear. The cool kid, the bully kid. I've seen it before! Also, you know, it's a Disney film because dead mother!! Ding ding ding!!
But I agree. A good movie.
I do agree that the second climax was out of nowhere. Overall, I like its humor, characters, story and lesson. It's also much better than The Emoji Movie. Best animated film of 2021.
Watched it on Christmas day and dont regret it. I enjoyed so much.
This movie was great and the end credits song was awesmor.
This movie was freakin adorable. I also like how it points out how BAD social media can be for kids. 😠
