- Curious about what it's like to sell a car to CarMax? We were too and we took the plunge! In this video I offer a brief overview of our experience selling our 2016 Chevy Suburban to CarMax, what you can expect if you go through this process, as well as personal feedback. We have since sold another vehicle, this time to Carvana. The experience was even easier and they offered thousands more than Carmax this time around! Definitely shop around for the best price if you are thinking about selling. Thanks for watching!

You're welcome! Check Carvana too and compare quotes. After making this video we ended up selling a different vehicle to Carvana. They came to us and beat everyone else in price by a quite a bit. But it was a hybrid so that might be why.
I am very happy with Carmax, I’ll never go anywhere else. From my experience they are very honest, no BS company. My grandma purchased a 2013 Hyundai Elantra with 21,000 miles from Carmax 6 1/2 years ago for $18,600 and sold it back to them last week with 93,900 miles for $7,000. I also sold my car to Carmax recently, again very happy with the price and all 3 transactions took about less than 2 hours like yours. I can’t wait to buy a new car from them!! I’m just waiting for the right one to come alone.

Did you have to detail your car before selling? It’s winter already so my car has road salt on it. I usually detail the car during the Spring when the weather is much better 😅
I'm not sure if we "had" to but we figured it might influence the appraisal so my husband did clean the inside and outside. It was March in New England, so definitely winter coat weather and not the most ideal time. 🥶 But the timing was right for us. Also, if you decide to do this, get quotes from different places. Before we started traveling with our RV in November we sold our small car to Carvana and the quote was even better than CarMax! On top of that, they will pick up your car if you are within their range.
I dont understand... so what did you sell it for? You just mentioned a large ballpark figure they gave you, 4k to 7k. It looked new so I hope they gave you the full 7k. What is your new car? Do the cats like it?
Hi! I didn't give an exact number. I felt kind of weird about that. But the payout that CarMax gave us was between $4800-$7800 HIGHER than the car dealers wanted to pay us. Each dealer had a different offer for us and they were all in the range of that much lower. Maybe I should have done percentages. Haha. The vehicle is almost five years old but we took great care of it.

I hear you have to pay taxes when you sell your car but when it's a trade in for a higher price vehicle you "save" on the sales tax.
We don't have sales tax in New Hampshire so that didn't apply to us, at least last year it didn't, but definitely food for thought if you do!

No. This was in New Hampshire. We don't have sales tax, or income tax in most scenarios.
How long did it take the check to clear?
I honestly don't remember the exact time frame but it was fast. Maybe a day or so. But that really depends on your bank.

Yes, it's a great time! I'm even hearing of regular car dealerships offering to match CarMax quotes lately. They're all hunting for used inventory.
