Depeche Mode Reaction, Reaction to 1985 interview,
Martin Gore, Dave Gahan, RIP Andrew Fletcher, Alan Wilder
One of the things I love about Depeche Mode interviews is how honest, funny and kind they all are. Throughout the years they had to deal with annoying and rude interviewers, regardless they had the patience of a saint.
How did I miss this one? Such an epic song. How they came out with this gem so far into their career I will never know.
Hi Seph. :) Please react to "The Big Ones"- Depeche Mode. You will love Martin in this one! ;)
Yes highly recommend!! So funny and a good peek into their personalities/great sense of humor
Iron Curtain refers to the border between Western, capitalist countries and the countries of the Soviet-controlled Eastern block (Warsaw Pact countries) in the 20th Century. People from the Eastern countries would be highly restricted in many ways, including their travel options, as passports were taken away from everybody and only handed out on special request. So it was almost impossible for these people to ever travel to Western countries and, as the Iron Curtain was very real, very difficult for Westerners to travel into the East where they could have „infected“ people with their Western ideas.
That and the fact that you could not make any money in socialist countries led to the fact that Western bands basically did not play in the East. Depeche Mode though obtained a huge following in those countries, mainly through illegally shared records which were given from fan to fan and recorded on tape. When they played some live concerts in the 80‘s to fans in Eastern Europe, they cemented their cult status there. This is one of the keys why Depeche Mode is still the biggest band in Eastern Europe, probably only beaten by the Beatles.
1985 is temporally between the records Some great reward and Black celebration. The group is on the rise but has definitely not reached its peak.
They've always been bigger in Europe outside the UK, for some reason. The home audience has not been as convinced of the greatness of Depeche Mode as the rest of Europe and a little later also in the USA. Possibly the band's musical and during the mid-80s industrial sound worked better in countries like Germany and the Nordic countries.
A little teaching about the Eastern European countries. After World War II, Europe was divided into two parts. The eastern half was controlled by the totalitarian communist regime of the Soviet Union. The Berlin Wall was built by the communists which divided Germany and Europe into two halves via communist GDR and West Germany. In practice, there was a ban on entry and exit from the eastern half, no one was allowed to cross the wall and to the other side, anyone who tried was shot down. To get in or out, special permission from the regime was required. Western culture was also enshrined in the communist-controlled East.
Now, to some extent, Western culture was still smuggled into the East, and that is probably why some people in the East knew about, among other things. Depeche Mode.
The Berlin Wall was torn down in 1989 in connection with the fall of communism in the Soviet Union.
It was singles 1981-85 time :)
My mum is polish and saw that concert in 1985. Back then she would regularly get records through the black market and imports, as did all of her friends.
This is inbetween Some Great Reward and Black Celebration
The British music press were never very complimentary of our beloved depeche,I never understood why,
I remember watching these when they where originally aired. Depeche Mode Information Service would send out sheets with UK programme air dates etc. This is It's Called A Heart, Shake The Disease era. Footage from Wide Awake Club, The Tube etc
The best thing about Depeche Mode (apart from their music of course) is that they are always so humble and fun in interviews. They're just themselves!
And they have never changed to this day!
Some good DM interviews are The Big Ones and when they were on the Jonathan Ross show. These two interviews really show their sense of humor.
This was after their release of the two singles Shake the Disease and It's Called a Heart....Fletch mentioned they were going into the studio in a couple of weeks, that's when they started to record the Black Celebration album!
Just think about it, just a couple of weeks after this interview they recorded the songs "Stripped" and "A Question of Lust".....
(You can also see the Vinyl cover of "It's Called a Heart" in the background of the Dave and Fletch interview....
And i think i mentioned some months ago that you should watch the video of Martin being funny compilation, it always crack me up!
Greetings from Poland ❤
Don't worry Seph, you are not the only one who dislikes It's Called a Heart, Alan even Martin was very against it to record it. I really encourage you to watch the documentaries for each album.
Omg Literal instructions! It wasn't just a Fletch Dad joke!
Hahahaha yep i honestly thought he was joking!!! But NOPE dave had the instructions 😂😂😂
Thanks seph😊👍🏻
Hi seph thanks for this 👍
Ommggg THANK YOU!!!!! Honestly anyone ever told you that you are TOO NICE!??? seriously!!
❤️❤️
I’m surprised they were even let in certain countries. The Cold War and the Iron Curtain were very real.
That was very enjoyable, interesting your take on things that surprised you about them and the world at that time as well. Much better than an intrumental huh? lol
dave
black celebration came out after this
