    I really enjoyed this video and your review I think it's spot on. Granted I don't have the Harding lol it's probably there most popular knife and I've had a hard time catching in in stock . I do have the helle trofe , a slightly smaller version of it and it's my favorite knife to use period and I have 2 other helle knives as well as many of the other big Scandinavian names in knives the only thing I have that's close imop is the karesuando boar survival knife. If you haven't seen it you should give it a look

    yeah its either this or the helle eggen as i hunt dear and that sort of size game so i think like you said the harding could be perfect

      I haven't messed with the Eggen but all the Helle knives I have used are super nice. Blade size would be the biggest thing. The Harding in my eyes is fantastic!

    Interesting review. I have one myself, problems are that it cant generate a spark and I wouldnt even try to batton or produce firewood with it. Which makes it pretty much useless, pretty it may be but not a lot of use when the chips are down.

      ....🤦‍♂️
      Bro....it's called a hatchet or axe. And many ferro rods come with their own small scraper. No 90° spine required on your knife.
      You do realize most woods knives produced since almost forever never had 90° spines for scraping modern ferro rods, right?
      And let's be honest...what are the real percentages of YOU being in a survival situation where the "chips are down"? 🙄
      If you couldn't eek out survival until you rescued yourself or had to be rescued with just a Helle Harding in hand...you need to work on your survival skills. 😉
      I don't recall a single episode of Les Stroud using the spine of his blade to spark a fire off a ferro rod. He did have one episode where he used a piece of flint or chert off of his axe to get a fire going.

      @@pennsyltuckyreb9800 Im not interested in 'ekeing' out my survival with an inferior tool, there are many good knives out there that Will baton and will strike sparks, Id rather carry one of them - I can afford it so why not.
      As for "survival chances?" there are MANY recorded examples of people getting themselves into situations they didnt plan for, I dont plan to be one of them.

      @@howardvarley8795 these knives are for hunting, fishing, whittling and can most definitly make a fire. You don’t need to split a redwood to light a fire, you can very easily make do with a larger amount of thin branches - which is what you’ll have more easy access to in a survival situation. Saplings or branches can be split with a helle of course provided you’re not hammering away on it’s back with a rock. For the purpose of starting s fire they are more than adequite. Besides if you have the tools to process wood enough to the point you can baton them, you could split those same logs with the tool you used to cut them be it a saw or an axe. And as for firesteel striking, I’ve never seen one in any store that comes without it’s own striker. You’d have to be specifically looking for one

    • @howardvarley8795
      @howardvarley8795 2 роки тому

      @@Herr_Gamer The Helle warranty is invalidated by batoning, which means that Helle themselves don't think their knives are up to it. And I dont want to have to carry an extra striker, I have enough stuff in my pockets already, I want to use the spine of my knife and I dont want to butcher the spine filing it down. It wouldnt hurt Helle to make them like that in the first place. This is not a Bushcraft knife nor a filleting knife - not really sure what it is.

    • @Herr_Gamer
      @Herr_Gamer 2 роки тому

      @@howardvarley8795 the striker on a ferrow rod is more often than not already tied to the rod itself so you won’t really be carrying a separate entity. And yeah you aren’t supposed to baton, but for thin branches you can. Helle knives are generally all purpose, meaning you can use them for hunting, filleting, whittling, cooking, etc. However if it is an absolute dealbreaker for you, Helle does offer a few full tang knives namely the Mândra, Temagami, Wabakimi, Didi Galgalu and Utvær. I believe the three first are designed in collaboration with Les Stroud, but I’d recommend the Utvær over the others as while the blade back itself isn’t 90°, the tang extends beyond the handle into a little triangle that can be used for firesteel striking, nut cracking, glass breaking, etc.

      Best knives IMHO are made by Fiddleback Forge and AA Forge HK (Handcrafted knives). These 2 makers, use the best materials make the best heat treats, blade geometries, best fit and finish etc. On top of that, their knives are also very beatiful! Trust me, it can't get any better than these 2 makers. If you want the best, these 2 are the best. Bark River knives (great hunting knives), LTWK (great bushcraft and camping) are also good, but not THAT good. Most suitable materials for fixed blades IMO, are micarta or wood for handle and 52100 or 80crv2 at 59 hrc for steel. Weight and balance of a knife, both play a big role, on how the knife works, but people, rarely check on that before they buy, such an important tool, like a knife is in our lives. Stay safe and have fun sir!

    whats it like for actually skinning

    • @HuntAppalachia1
      @HuntAppalachia1  6 років тому

      I guess it would depend on what you are skinning. I think the blade length and size is really about perfect for what I do.

  • @deancrowley3484
    @deancrowley3484 6 років тому

    have you found any problems skinning deer with the harding at all subscibed also

    • @HuntAppalachia1
      @HuntAppalachia1  6 років тому

      No problems other than out of the box it was too sharp and I wasn't used to it. I ended up nicking guts a few times. It is really best after you have skinned a few and it dulls the blade down a little.
