    Side note-Another thing I positively adore in Nioh: REFORGE. The fact that you can make any item look like any other item of the same variety should become standard in games that feature visible changes, lord knows in other games I've stuck with weaker equipment because I felt the stronger items made me look like an asshole. Here, you can find the exact look you like, and stick with it. Fantastic.

    Also note there's Ki Pulses on dodges/dashes
    Which is important because a dash is often the fastest way to cancel, as well as fastest way to reset your base combo for most weapons, all while being the safest type of Ki Pulse.
    The trade-off is that it offers the least Ki regen (because the very act of dashing uses more Ki than Ki Flux or standard Ki Pulse)

    • @TurboButton
      @TurboButton  7 років тому +19

      I originally had a mention of the dodge ki pulse trick in the script but it sort of screwed with the pacing of the video so I took it out. I think there's a clip of me doing it somewhere in the video.
      But yeah, you're right. It can be useful but considering it doesn't also gel with Flux I always find myself going for the traditional ki-pulse rather than the dodge. It's also got the same sort of principle in terms of timing it late rather than early and so putting your neck on the line.

    Nioh has SUPERB combat and I love it, but the Diablo loot style kinda ruined the game for me, constantly having to stop the flow of play to optimize my armor and weapons.
    I find it even... stupid, that they give you a fast-paced agressive-rewarding combat system that's fluid and fun, and then force you to stop EVERYTHING mid-mission or in-between missions to switch up your gear entirely.

  • @WayToTheGrave
    @WayToTheGrave 7 років тому +28

    i beat the alpha without knowing what ki pulse was, i just thought it was a neat particle attached to a pretty primitive stance system a la DMC4. after having completed the game i'm convinced it's genius.
    kind of like how DMC is designed around pushing the player towards higher difficulties by giving you such an expansive toolset that normal difficulties become kind of a bore, Nioh's method of pushing the player into higher level play all revolves around the core concept of a gameplay model they're more than likely already familiar with. just manage your stamina properly and utilize the skills you gain access to when necessary.
    one of the things i quickly noticed playing the game was that different stances had different invincibility qualities on their dodge, and after unlocking ki pulse during a dodge as well as flux, i would slowly begin to "double-tap" dodges by first shifting into low stance for the flux bonus and then hitting X again for a much more buff dodge losing me exactly zero ki in the long run.
    this mechanical math all happens before you start getting into broken stuff like onmyo buff stacking, rather than being sadistic it's a neat design that encourages you to always be firing on all cylinders during combat and it's absolutely thrilling (even when the enemy variety is kind of low).
    great video man.

    I wish people would make more comparisons to Gears of Wars Active reload.
    Or that more games used it because reloading is shit in them.

    • @TurboButton
      @TurboButton  7 років тому +4

      Never played Gears actually. How does it work, is it like the Vanquish reload cancel or what?

    • @TacoCookiez
      @TacoCookiez 7 років тому +25

      Whenever you reload your weapon a bar appears underneath your ammo. Towards the end of this bar is a small sliver of white space. If you time the reload so that you hit that small white space your reload is immediately finished and your new magazine does extra damage. The risk is that if you mistime it your weapon jams and your reload takes a lot longer. It's a pretty neat mechanic.

    • @megasoniczxx
      @megasoniczxx 7 років тому +4

      I instantly felt bad for putting down gears for so long after hearing about that mechanic and how the movement works. At first I thought it just looked like some generic boring military shooter but actually playing it feels really good and the way how the cover and shooting mechanics work are pretty cool and things that I'd say it does better than a majority of TPS's that come out these days.

    • @Bizargh
      @Bizargh 7 років тому

      TacoCookiez explains the Active Reload for the most part. However, they missed a few details.
      When you reload a weapon, you're given a HUD timeline/time-slider for that weapon's reload. Within that timeline, you're given a marker (Usually differently placed within the timeline per weapon), which if you hit the reload button/key perfectly on, you'll be given a temporary performance bonus to the weapon such as a damage increase for the Lancer assault rifle, fire-rate increase for the Boltok hand cannon or a faster arc-alignment for the Torque Bow. There often is a faded white 'room for error' surrounding or following this marker which if the reload button/key is hit, will grant a faster reload, rewarding players for trying to perfect their reload, but coming close enough. If the player is too early or too late (Alas hitting reload again within the black bar), the player is penalised with a longer/fumbled reload, characterised by fumbled/jammed animations. The player's movement is never hampered by any of this, but the player cannot swap weapons after pressing reload during the reload sequence, so one who fails the reload has to wait until the weapon is loaded before being able to fight back.

I also own the Nioh Collection which I have never played, but is clearly a great game combat wise, Team Ninja know their thing, I hope they will make a Ninja Gaiden Reboot or sequel, preferably a reboot

I strongly recommend the PS3 or PS4 because of the (rarity these days really) exclusives. Really recommend - The last of us, Uncharted 4 and Horizon Zero Dawn is also decent (no it's not freaking amazing as everyone says). Unfortunately there are not as many exclusives like as back in the days because money grabbing machines (aka. game developers) make 95% of the games cross platform these day. Xbox one has yet to deliver a substantial amount of good exclusive games to be worth buying especially for a guy like me that owns a PC. PC delivers a different experience than a console. Not better or bad, just different. Oh I forgot, I got Nioh too and it's pretty good definitely worth buying.

    • @synysterdawn8913
      @synysterdawn8913 7 років тому +2

      The problem with that comparison is that Bloodborne's Rally system stops being useful pretty quickly. Blood Vials heal much more and are much safer to utilize, and they're not exactly in short supply. Also, enemies start hitting pretty fucking hard even with high HP investment. Factor in the game's low hitstun from the player's weapons and other shit like enemy hyper armor, and it's seems like the devs stopped thinking about the Rally system when developing everything after the first few areas.

    Nioh is a massive disappointment. You keep mentioning Team Ninja like this game is any continuation of their previous action titles, it isn't. It ended up being a straight up Souls clone only with no enemy or environment variety to distract from the monotonous gameplay. It does not encourage an aggressive playstyle at all, in fact the most effective way to play is to just do boring bait and counter tactics since the AI is brain dead and stupid easy to exploit, or you know, you can just use one of the myriad of broken abilities that break the game.

    • @furyberserk
      @furyberserk 7 років тому

      Well of course. It was marketed as a soulslike and the best way to play any game is to lame it out. This game however doesn't force you to lame it out. The best way to play any game is never to be active, and a broken ability is just added fun if you pull it off. It's not like you are forced to use them. That's literally every action game ever made. Just look at bloodborne's health recovery after you take a hit by attacking your opponent. No one does it, but it's allowed. It incentives you attack after being attacked, but it's literally one of the worst options you can do.

    • @night1952
      @night1952 6 років тому +4

      Yes, there's lot of attacks, skills, and stuff you can do, but the risk is too high when the low risk approach gives pretty much the same reward.
      I've beaten Ninja Gaiden sigma 1 and 2 in most difficulties, and in those games, there's no low risk option, so you are forced to use the most of every skill, moving and attacking constantly.
      The difference between these two games, is that Ninja gaiden has normal mode, which is a difficulty that allows you to learn to use all of the hard tech without punishing you too hard for failing to use them, while Nioh always punishes you, with most enemies being able to kill you in a couple attacks, so what do you do? You stick to the stuff that works and has no punishment.
      Btw, to the guy that says the recovery system in BB is not used, me and everyone i've seen play the game uses it and abuses it.
