    Extra Notes:
    In Bayonetta 2, if you've launched an enemy from behind you cannot re-launch them (if they begin to fall) unless using Umbran Climax, instead you can keep enemies stalled in the air by repeatedly switching weapons and using just one/two moves in a combo. Pretty weird in a system all about getting to the end of combos.
    The waggle-stun attack Fearless/Faithless have in 1 is annoying. Waggle stuns are always annoying but this one isn't very clearly telegraphed, not being an actual physical interaction between enemy/player but instead just a vague AoE.
    Those dumb ships are also set-dressing cannon-fodder in 2, good choice.
    Even the most basic Affinity enemies have different melee/long-ranged attacks, you can see them using their trumpets a few times in this video.
    Alraune in Bayonetta 2 is slightly better than the Lumen Sage fights, doesn't feel quite as reliant on Witch Time.
    Didn't even notice until I rendered the video that I don't think Grace/Glory even use their fire tornado/shockwave attacks in 2! They have a new stinger attack but the fact that these iconic attacks are gone even on the highest difficulty is kinda weird.
    Bayonetta 2 is still a really good game. :^)

      6:52 - 8:01 OMG THIS! Do you how many people seem to ignore all this about Bayo 2? I love what the game brings, but these nonsensical changes to an otherwise near perfect system is a complete detriment to the game. Thanks for pointing this out.

    Finally i saw someone who actually acknowledged that B2 introduced many problems to its core gameplay design and to an extent destroyed the master level designs of B1, not just blindly praising B2 for whatever the trivial changes it brought to make the game easier for those people who only play through the game once. Great video, hope more people can see it and understand the intricacies of this game.

    3:48 on the subject of Grace & Glory, something interesting to mention is that you somewhat CAN wait until they’re done! Grace & Glory (and their harder counterparts, Gracious & Glorious) don’t attack you at the same time, unlike other enemies. Only one is programmed to do a combo at a time to keep a player from getting indefinitely locked in their attacks.
    When you attack one of them, lets say Glory, Glory is no longer in its “attacking” state, meaning that Grace is allowed to attack. But it takes time for that to register, & as a result you get a few extra seconds to attack Glory before Grace comes at you.
    But of course it gets less lenient on later difficulties!

    This was actually a really good video. Usually, when people discuss Bayonetta's gameplay, they just glorify it in an unspecified manner. This video was good because it not only truly showed the technicality of Bayonetta's complex gameplay, but even in the footage you provided I can tell that you actually tried to do a great job (despite being hit so many times).

      Dynasty Warriors uses its enemies differently than Bayonetta though. They're passive because they're not intended to be the challenge - the challenge is in learning how to clear them out efficiently using the moves you have available. In addition, Bayonetta doesn't have the extra layer of challenge Dynasty Warriors has in having to keep an eye on the minimap, surveying your surroundings and weighing up the risk versus reward of multiple objectives in different areas of the map.

    • @Light-Rock97
      @Light-Rock97 7 років тому +28

      Dynasty Warriors would be unplayable with Bayonetta's enemies, and it would be a tremendous waste of potential to have Dynasty Warriors' enemies in Bayonetta. Each work in their own series, but as things are, you might enjoy fighting one more than the other.

    • @realevostevo
      @realevostevo 6 років тому +4

      Campaign "improvements"? I'm not too sure what they mean, I found the NPCs that tagged along in some levels highly annoying. It had some great visuals and weapons but I think everything else fell below the 1st game.

    • @umbranelegance9034
      @umbranelegance9034 2 роки тому +1

      @@realevostevo I think they mean improvements by the lack of instant QTEs and less awful vehicle sections that overstay their welcome. But still, even with the improvements they did make, they butchered the combat. Enemy aggression is terrible, their defensive capabilites are op against you, and it just in generally felt rushed without any thought put behind it aside from making it look good. Because it feels awful even when you're doing well. It just feels claustrophobic. Like I have to play a certain way to do well.
      Alot of attacks also have poor tell cues and even more so when enemies are aggroed. It's just poor design and it shouldn't be that way when the first game did it better. Just because a game looks better and feels faster which gets your adrenaline pumping DOESNT mean its well designed or intuitive. I mean I wish they would just leave Witch Time alone.
      Also this game tries to please everybody and fails at most of it honestly bc as arbitrarily poor as the combat is, the balance they tried to instill was making the game more accessible with items being usable with lollipops not costing you any grade and making the Bracelet of Time OP. They also made Alruna OP bc they couldn't be bothered creating other opportunities to stagger enemies or slow the pace of the game. It's just poor in taste and dignity. It's vapid and hollow, but HEY it sure is shiny so I guess people think it's better lol

    Bayonetta’s enemies, like many other things in the game, have designs that are so intricate and details that they would feel out of place anywhere else. Yet they somehow work, and enhance the entire experience.
    The dance-like, combo combat and sheer variety are just the icing on the cake.

    The reasons you discuss in this video are why I love the Lynels in Breath of the Wild so much- they've got a really large moveset, they telegraph everything, and they're also not stunned by basically anything other than Urbosa's Fury or an arrow to the face, the latter of which can be really difficult to do since it's a small hitbox on a fast moving and agile target. Every move can be countered but it takes a long time to learn those moves and how to approach them, fighting one that has a crusher it's nearly impossible to flurry rush them because the aoe blast will still hit you even if you dodge the club itself.

    One thing I feel like mentioning here is a certain dynamic that is especially relevant during the Jeanne Bossfight which is the fact that witchtime is not triggered by every enemy hit. Both Grace and Glory have those attacks as well, just that these attacks do not happen very often.
    It can add even more to the moveset variety of the enemies, or more accurately, gives the enemies, especially Jeanne, a better actually off-showing for their attacks and combos. Granted, on Infinite Climax this is of course out of question, but with that, the Jeanne bossfights just get a very cool dynamic which is part of why I love these bossfights so much...
    ...Why wasn't the last Jeanne bossfight its own level though...?

    • @TurboButton
      @TurboButton  7 років тому +8

      This very much, I can't believe I forgot to mention this. I'm pretty sure (unless you do the parry headbutt thing) you can only get witch time off her wicked weaves, which you can get witch time off all of Lumen Sage and Aesir's attacks. It's quite telling about the reliance of witch time in 2.
      Also yes the schmup before Jeanne fucking sucks.

    • @MrEinFan
      @MrEinFan 7 років тому +1

      It's also visible in MGR, some enemies attacks can not be parried, only blocked (Monsoon's main combo for example let's you only counter if you nail the parry on the last hit) and some enemies even actively work against it (these armored dudes who counter your counter and lock you into a loop of counters if you don't dodgecancel out of it).
      Funnily enough it's actually Nier Automata in which the enemies stop doing that, it even happens that the Adam and Eve bossfights (except the last one) are having the player fall into an obvious pattern, generally are most enemies not exactly satisfying to fight against, one of the reasons I am dissappointed in Automata...

    Here I am playing Devil May Cry 4 SE and I find myself feeling like the story in the game seems lacking, like something important is missing. With that I'm off to google which leads me to finding very good indications that half of the game was cut; interesting stuff. After that I found myself looking up the DMC4 novel and for some reason that led me to look up mechanics of the game such as Jump Cancelling.
    Somehow that landed me on your video about Credo and Boss fight design even though the JC video had nothing related to Credo or even any boss in the game.
    Now here I am hours later, DMC4 idle to the side, having watched most of your content.
    And what great content it is, I'm absolutely loving the more analytical side of games and mechanics you present over the more common reviews you see out there.
    Thanks for your great work sir, you got a new subscriber who is very much looking forward to more content.

    What an amazing video, truly makes us think more about enemy and bosses designs in newer games. This type of enemy design it's something more games should try doing, especially for Boss Fights, not only for Hack n Slashes but some other genres, Kirby is one that immediately comes to mind, pretty much all the bosses, especially the fight against Galacta Knight and Dark Meta Knight in the new games, they have a huge moveset variety, they are very aggressive (they will not let you float in this battle, not even for a second), they are the only bosses in the game that can defend themselves from Kirby attacks, but all of their moves are telegraphed, especially the really strong ones. This is why people love those fights so much

      @Marshal Wagner My expectations are low. It's difficult to create something as polished as Bayo 1 and I accept this. Nintendo's track record as of late is not great with any of their IP's in particular, and even if their interference is minimal in Platinum's development process, the lack of news is at least disconcerting for the potential quality of the finished game. I digress though. Regardless of how long it takes, or how good Bayo 3 turns out, if it ever does, Bayo 1 will always exist as something to go back to and enjoy.

    DMC still sometimes has some problems with this I think lol.
    Though I am shit at the games, so I don't mind.
    One thing I must say is that God Hand is probably one of the best examples of very intimate back and forths in gaming.
    Not only because the camera is so close, but because most enemies, even if they share the same attacks for the most part with a few exeptions like the girls with whips, the people with the throwable energy mohawk blades, the bouncy fatties... you get the gist.. Uh.. even if a lot of them share a lot of moves, they do all come equipped with a large varioety of them at once. The various dodges in combination with the unique properties some moves have (like that jumping spin kick guard breaker that evades something like footswipes) encourage the player to always be on the look out for what the opponent is doing, and how you can best react.
    For example the two more risky dodges are benefitial for staying in a combo and continuing to beat on an enemy, so you should always look out for when that little duck would be enough to keep you out of harm's way.
    My biggest problems with God Hand probably are though that enemies often just have too much health and take too much time to get defeated, which ends up in your standard square combo most likely always being just a generic mix in of quick jabs that are simply there for damage output, instead of being really effectice as well as your x and triangle moves will probably be.. Idk.. i'm tired...

    I think my only major complaint with Bayo 1 outside of what you mentioned was that the game isn't always consistent with its rules when it comes to activating Witch Time. Some enemies, like Gracious and Glorious, if memory serves, simply don't trigger Witch Time, even if you time your dodges just right. I very much appreciated 2's insistence on consistency in that arena.

      @hypermonkeybird4945 Рік тому

      old comment but for anyone new reading these comments, thats like, totally the point. the game is slowly weaning you off of your crutch. as the game progresses enemies have less moves that trigger witch time until you finally face Gracious&Glorious who don't trigger them at all. on the game's highest difficulty you cant witch time at all. the brilliance is that witch time was never necessary in the first place; the entire game and every enemy is designed in a way that you never need it at all. dodge offset is the *real* main mechanic of bayonetta.
      bayo 2 of course doesnt understand this because it doesnt understand what made bayo1's combat good at all and it just becomes a game of wait for witch time and mash out a silly little combo string. witch time is required for so much of that game that it didnt remove it on the highest difficulty (like is customary for kamiya games, removing the crutch entirely on Fuck You Must Die mode, you see this in DMC1 and VJ), because it would have made the game impossible.

Of course most of them haven’t played a relatively niche, Japanese action video game released on 5 platforms over 8 years, even if it sold millions it’s still a fraction of the people that play video games.

    I like how early you tossed out the word "dancing" in relate to the combat, which is exactly the point I made in my review as well. Platinum was definitely trying to infuse that kind of rhythm into the action. That's also why Bayonetta shows confident in her movement, have that teasing/bdsm sort of attitude, and she even danced the shit out of those angels in the prelude stage. Her design ties with the gameplay thematically.
    But the point was sent across more obviously when they remove Witch Time in InfiClimax mode imo. Without the safety safe slow-mo zone, players have to fully utilizes Dodge Off-set in order to be effective in combat. With enough practice, it almost feels like the game was meant to be played without Witch Time. Dodge Off-set is the true star on the stage here, Witch Time was just a backup dancer, that's how I feel after completing the game anyway. Base on the footages, it seems like you're capable of beating Climax mode, have you done it?
    It's interesting that you dislike the transition attack from the enemy intros. I feel like it is a soft answer to the complains of "cutscene ruins game's pace". And the amount of times they use it is kinda consistent so later surprises can be dodged if you have the attention for it. Anyway enough rambling on the game I love so much, great video!

    Thank you for explaining combat. For me I knew Bay 1 and 2 differed quite a bit. I know Bay 2 was merciful in some areas such as the window of time for witch time to activate, but I couldn't really pinpoint the areas where it wasn't and where it kind of relied some AI RNG. I never really noticed the "Lumen dodging" or the autoblock and lower launch rate of enemies until you pointed it out for Bayonetta 2. I knew there was a reason I always enjoyed the Jeanne fights more than the Lumen sage ones.

    6:52 - 8:01 OMG THIS! Do you how many people seem to ignore all this about Bayo 2? I love what the game brings, but these nonsensical changes to an otherwise near perfect system is a complete detriment to the game. Thanks for pointing this out.

      The sad thing about this is that it's almost not noticeable for a good amount of players admiditly even me too when when I got into the series. When you got a responsive frantic action game the technicalities of ot aren't of thought for some.

      @@TheAnimatedGamer That's fair. In order to achieve Platinum rewards with style for the first game, I had to watch videos by Saur, (or Saurian as his channel is called now) because I couldn't figure it out on my own. He's exceptionally good at delving into mechanics and finding out how to push them.
      He made tutorials on the basics, as well as how to tackle enemies, their class systems and most importantly, how the point system actually worked. Knowing how the point system works from the first game has you realising that it's non-existent in the second by comparison. Which is a damned shame.

    Awesome video, you've got another subscriber here. I really enjoyed Bayo 1 & 2, but never got very good at the combat usually sticking to a few familiar combos and not reacting to enemies well. So Grace and Glory often often caused problems for me, it's quite embarrassing that I never learnt to fight them properly. These two always stood out compared to other non-boss enemies, and I always thought "oh shit" whenever they appeared, before clumsily flailing around until they died (or I died). It's amazing how this game manages to be fun for someone like me who wasn't bothered about learning the optimum way to fight, but also fun for people who want to go for world record combos. Amazing games, hope there will be a 3rd.

      Here is a little tip fore grace an glory. Combine Pulleys Butterflys fore protection and Sai Fung fore its high stagger rate. Even on infinite Climax that makes this guys realetivly easy. Sai Fung kepps them staggered. When another Grace/Glory comes close they just get staggered asewell. With Sai Fung PPPKKK works pretty well. Those guy dont take it very well when Bayonetta makes this spin kick on the ground that hits there legs. It will cause them to fall so you can land a wicked weve. Pulys Butterflys helps in general to grow accustom to higher difficulty’s without getting your ass kicked. I used it a lot and I thought if I dont use it I will be screwed on infinite climax. I was wrong. My ratings merely dropped from average Platnum sometimes gold to average gold sometimes platinum.

    I don't know if you'll ever see this (this video being 3 yo), but I wanted to clarify something.
    The original angels in Bayo 2 share the launching properties of the rest of the enemy cast. Grace & Glory can be launched outside of witch time because in both games they belong to the light weight tier, meaning the can be launched by a basic launcher or a wicked weave launcher, even outside of witch time

    Bayonetta - very suprisingly for me, because I love this type of games - was very desappointing in many situations. Almost beat the game at this point, and I can say that, ignoring stupid "press the button" moments, horrible "arcade" levels with flying and riding, and, as you said, at times extremly dump mobs, almost all problems came to one thing - camera. It's just... I can't discribe how helpless I feel when I can't see and control what's going on on the battlefield. I succeded in games like DMC on every difficulty, yet in Bayonetta i died multiple times on each level on normal. With that camera even the best telegraphing becomes useless as you fail to just noticing it or react to it while struggling with the chaos on screen.
    And, maybe it's just me, but I don't see how one can enjoy battles with groups of enemies who attack how they want, when they want, even outside of the player's vision, especially with attack's that you bearly can escape if you don't click at the appropriate time.
    There was also a low frame rate in the PS3 version, so I'll give the game a chance on steam and see how my opinion will change. I would very like it to change.

    Bayo 2 just didn’t feel as fun to play with as 1 did, the enemies in 1 were all so unique and were actually comboable, but in 2 if you hit an enemy they just break your combo and you can’t do anything and it’s just boring and extremely irritating, that’s why I don’t understand why so many people say bayo 2 is better. Like no it’s newer and it looks pretty but it’s far from the first game. EDIT: also as a jeanne main I must say 2 fucking sucked for Jeanne

    What's this? Someone likes Bayo 1 over 2 as well. I got straight platinum and pure platinum on all difficulties on both games (more than once for WiiU and Xbox Bayo 1). I LOOOVVEEE BAYONETTA! I like EVERYTHING about Bayo 1 over 2 sadly (Except Jeanne's look and how colorful 2 was). 2 was too easy. It failed to give me the character development between Bayo and Jeanne that I was expecting since we're going to save her and need a more emotional awareness and character development regarding their friendship. Omni was lazy. The music in 1 was better. The STORY PACING(I get on that a lot) is better in 1. Final boss was better because it was something new and not just the SAME GIANT HANDS AGAIN! I prefer the Beehive >.>. Tonal shift felt more appropriate in 1.2 rehashes a lot from 1. Enemies are better in 1. I felt a more emotional connection to Bayonetta's character development in 1 because there was none in 2.Weapons didn't feel that great in 2 except the new blue gun combos and the dual swords. Father Rodin was a difficult but fair fight 1 (In 2 idfk why he is so obnoxious). I thought the reuse of the bosses from 1 was stupid and just kind of there for the sake of it. I wish the Masked Lumen was a new character all together. Her personality was clearer in 1 and less all over the place (why are you dancing and putting your ass in the camera and then making a serious face about the soul of your best friend who is front of you... It was pointless and bipolar). In Bayonetta 1 she had fun. The idea of being your own source of love, light, and inspiration was a theme I thoroughly appreciated and took emotionally from 1 while 2 gave me nothing truly. In the end Bayo 2 gorgeous but somewhat vapid in certain places, and it was dumbed down in comparison. Wicked Weaves felt WEAK as fuck in Bayonetta 2. Because Umbran Climax was supposed to be the thing that mattered, landing my well placed wicked weaves felt pointless as I grinded through a health bar, but in 1 when I landed a wicked weave you saw a chunk fly from their health which showed that landing those combo finishers had weight and meaning to the dominating intensity of each fight. Also the secret side missions was wwaayyy too easy in 2 as well as easy to find. The hand holding in 2 is so unfortunate.
    I do love Bayo 2 though in certain areas. The some of the boss fight locations were lovely and unique to 1. It's truly a far more colorful game. Becoming a snake was nice. The level design was sublime in 2, and I do think that it outshines 1 in that regard. The enemies felt more fluid in some cases; sadly this did not have an impact on the combat too much because of Umbran Climax. I loved Loptr's design. Multiplayer was awesome, despite bayonetta and Jeanne having a cheat ability to get an edge in combat. I really enjoyed being able to play as the masked Lumen and Rosa (Rosa because she felt like Bayonetta 1's damage). Insidious looked amazing! Sloth was the best normal enemy design in Bayonetta 2. It was so well done and reminded me of grace and glory. I am curious to know which you liked more as enemies, given the theme of this video.
