Exactly! Lolita fashion and historical reenactment are two completely different things. Anyone interested in fashion history and historical reenactment would know immediately by the mash-up of different sleeve/bodice/skirt silhouettes or decorative details inspired by different eras of historical fashion, by the prints/colour schemes and dress materials, and by the skirt lengths that lolita is a modern fashion style that does not depend on conformity to "historical accuracy".

On "pastels on Black skin"... literally every Easter you will find women and men of color FLEXING in pastel purples, yellows, pinks, and greens. The darker the person, the better it usually looks! Dark skin/clothing makes pastel shine like nothing else can. It's LITERALLY a color aesthetic. Pastel Goths? Pastel Emo? Pastel Grunge is a thing!
Honestly, pastels look more mature and intentional against something darker in clothes, makeup, and design. Lolita is not magically the exception because it's based off of Victorian and Rococo fashion. Black people existed along with everyone else back then in SEVERAL social classes IN and OUT of European history.
Medieval POC's tumblr is literally all about Blacks and other POC in "historically accurate" positions (not just in slavery!) and is a good read for anyone who really wants to learn what "historically accurate" really means for POC.

Joining in with those expressing disgust at the "historically accurate" nonsense. Madam C. J. Walker strikes me as a Black Victorian era woman who had way more money than I'll probably EVER see so that so called "point" is utterly false and invalid. 99% of Victorian ANYONE couldn't afford House of Worth gowns, yet white ladies tooootaaaallllly can wear one to a historical costume event with no one questioning their validity. I hate it thanks. Lolita isn't a 'historically accurate' in any way shape or form fashion ANYWAYS. Also we live in 2020. You can dress in whatever era's fashion you want. PERIOD.

    • @honeyblue2902
      @honeyblue2902 4 роки тому +44

If you look into victorian era history there were black and colored people living in Europe and elsewhere who could afford and confidently wore the popular clothing in that era; there was just no effort put into keeping records of those peoples lives in the mainstream. Asami already calls out the fact that these people don't really care about historical accuracy; they just want to make Black people uncomfortable because they are uncomfortable with us.

If you would like to start with lolita fashion..maybe try wearing casual lolita outfits? Like a nice lolita skirt, a grear petticoat and T-shirt (Japanese lolita brands have good ones but you could check them out for inspiration and get something similar elsewhere) or a simple blouse. Maybe small hair accessories.. No need to go full baroque lolita from the beginning.

Also, on the subject of cultural appropriation- ugh, what annoys me about "cultural appropriation" is when people use that as a smoke screen to prevent someone of a different race to be included in that culture. It's like, do people not realize culture is chosen? Yes we're all born into a certain culture but we each have the capacity to accept and live that culture, or reject it and find another culture that suits us better. Telling a black lolita they are "culturally appropriating" fashion is just veiled racism.

Girl.. when you said that someone has told you it’s not historically correct for you to be wearing that, and then proceeded to use the word “slave” in reference to how you should be dressed... my jaw SMACKED the floor honey. How you didn’t knock the absolute sh!t out of them baffles me. You’re way better than me because they would’ve left that conversation missing a tooth at the very least.

I'm sorry you dealt with so much negativity. Going back to the "historically accurate" debate, slavery ended in England *before* the Victorian era started. There were many wealthy Black people who wore the top fashions, my ancestors were among them. It's sad that people don't really know history or even fashion history. You look great!

Videos like these are so important for kids/adults who like this style or any style outside the Black hip-hop stereotype. They get to watch other Black people living outside of monolith narrative that we can only be Black a certain way. We can be quirky, we can be feminine, we can be a girl boss, a Goth, a fairy, a Queen, hell you can still be a scene kid!

I have just started watching your content - you are such an inspiration!
One of my favorite people is a Black woman. What she told me so far is so damn scary, yet, I am grateful that she is opening up to me about it. Even in our so "open-minded" work-environment where we have to deal with international customers she is faced with racism - incl. by colleagues. She knows how to fight back better than anyone I know in such clever ways.
Also, I am part of the international vintage community with people loving 1920s-60s fashion and have heard in our community from our melanin members, that they´ve experienced similar shit as you did - certain colours do not suite them, not historically accurate and more ignorant or even harrassing comments. It makes me so angry, that people put others down. Why can we not just cheer for others and support them? Despite not wearing Lolita (anymore), I am cheering for everyone who found their passion and comfort with it. Fashion is meant to be played with. Who is in the position to tell anyone how to be happy or how to live the life of someone else? If a Muslim lolita is also a Hijabi - great! If a melanin lolita is wearing pastels - great! If a trans girl is wearing the biggest wigs and skirts - great! It´s about self-expression and comfort in your own skin.
Btw, in my opinion melanin skin looks amazing in any colour (and super pale me would look hideous in pastels, yellow...)

Thank you for sharing your experiences. It is disheartening that lolita fashion, for all the joy it brings and the community spirit it can foster, is still but a microcosmos of the mainstream society, meaning that it's not immune from racists, bigots and genuinely terrible people. I'm happy that that racist person you cut out of your life is no longer affecting you and I hope that if they are still part of the lolita community, that someone else is calling them out on their bs. Because it is not acceptable and no community should tolerate that kind of behaviour from anyone.

I literately screamed when you shared that people have said that you were "historically incorrect" and mentioned you should wear classic because it is closer to slave clothing! Firstly, what makes that an acceptable thing to say?! Secondly, their argument doesn't hold water since, like you mentioned, the other Lolitas present were also not historically accurate. I am so glad that you cut ties with that racist Lolita and I am happy others have put her in her place as well. I freaking HATE the "you're not Black-Black" or "but your different" argument. TLDR: lolita's not accurate it's inspired, and there were absolutely historical and fashionable black women.
Historically accurate isn't something I would call lolita in general. HOWEVER, there were, in fact, Blacks in distinguished and well-paying careers in pre-civil war America. They weren't treated with the same respect as their white peers but they did wear the same styles of clothing.
We just don't talk about them because talking about it would on a surface level muddy the issue of racism during the slavery period making it look more targeted towards slaves rather than Blacks.
But as I said at the beginning lolita isn't strictly accurate to history, to begin with, it's much closer to an idealized history or fantasy than actual history (as most Historical Asian things about the western world are).

Imagine seeing someone happy doing something harmless like wear clothes they love and you have to say "Hey, you can't do that! You're the wrong color!"
I do have a question for lolitas of color out there: Do men treat you extra creepy or fetishy if they see you in your cords? It's way more noticeable with white dudes, but I've had men of all colors see me, a Native American gal, in alternative fashion and think that means I'm somehow super kinky because I'm not running around with a feather in my hair or some crap. For reference, I usually dress like it's the 90's and grunge is still a thing.

This video was so amazing, thank you for this! As a long time lolita (12 years in the NYC community) I've experienced a smattering here and there of bad racial experiences, but I've noticed way less because I'm lighter skinned and thin, but my friends who are darker skinned and or plus sized get treated differently by other lolitas and normies. These layers of marginalization are infuriating to me. It's so important to me to uplift and support other Black lolitas of all shades and sizes 💕 even as another Black lolita.
The historical inaccuracy comment was probably the most upsetting because like other people commented, lolita is not meant to be historically accurate and 2, there were black people in the Victorian era who were not slaves and were actually affluent and wore clothing like this....like wtf! So ignorant....😡

I have been a fan of Lolita fashion for over a decade but I’ve always been afraid to jump in the community because of my size. I remember back in the day when there weren’t as many resources as there are now and the Lolita comms in livejournal were pretty vicious so I just kept admiring it from afar. Even now as we’re seeing more and more diverse faces and bodies in kawaii fashion I still get shy.
I’m currently in a maid cafe and i feel really comfortable when I’m “in character” as a maid and with my sisters in maid uniform, but I’ve yet to feel that level of confidence in casual kawaii clothing 😅 two of my cafe sisters just bought their first Lolita dream dresses and now I’m like “BITCH ME TOO!” So now I’m on the hunt for my own dream dress. I just wanna make one coord... just one and I’ll feel fulfilled lol.

Okay ngl I started tearing up because growing up I didn't really care about my skin color until puberty hit and it all went to shit and insecurities started hitting
It didn't matter the style or occasion that I'm wearing what I want for but I have a really polar reaction to dressing up
I wasn't a very "dark" Mexican or a sterotypical brown Mexican but I would never pass as a white person if put in a line up.
So it never felt right to try things because all I saw was a specific skin tones in the style and I felt that I would step on people's toes EVEN wearing clothes from my race made me feel like a fraud
I love Lolita but I still feel like it's not for me even when I see all you lovely lolita's just FUCKIN ROCKIN IT
So hearing you say it's okay to wear the clothes that looks cute on me makes me so happy and makes me want to really really try it.
Thank you thank you and I really love the blue star for the give away if it's not to late 🥺👉👈

Hello there! So as weird as this may sound, I'm not into wearing Lolita fashion (though it's lovely) but I've recently developed an affinity for videos of people who are. I find it immensely refreshing to watch some Lolitas' videos because they have such thoughtful and wise perspectives on unabashedly being who they are and expressing themselves exactly how they see fit. I suppose that as a lesbian who came of age in the early 2000s when things were way less tolerant, I relate in my own way to sticking out and getting comfortable in my own skin against some rotten people's wishes. You are most definitely one of these people who exudes wisdom and confidence and your insight into being a Lolita of color is enlightening (albeit infuriating at times when the comments thrown your way are astoundingly ignorant). Anyway, I really enjoy your videos and look forward to more. Thanks for the tea! :-)

I loved the way you made this a little chit chat. You have some wild stories but I’m happy you didn’t let that discourage you from being in the fashion. You’re such an inspiration and I’m so happy for you and the growth on your channel. Thanks for the cup of tea 💗

The level of immaturity of racist people is disgusting. I was so repulsed to hear all the terrible things you experienced. You are amazing and don't let anyone tell you otherwise. 💕💕
