There is a game called "Gargoyles Quest" on the game boy, where you actually play as Firebrand, very similar to the game here. In my eyes one of the best game boy games and i played it a lot as a kid 🙂
1. To use inventory items you must select inventory items. Including the gargoyle form, potions in bottles and spells on vellum (paper). 2. There aren’t really I frames, at least for many bosses. One of the riskiest but biggest tricks for some bosses is to spam breath attacks. 3. There generally can only be one fireball on the screen at one time but once it vanishes, you can make another one. A strong tactic is to get close to an enemy and hit the attack button as fast as you can, though that also makes you a sitting duck. 4. You can head butt windows.
You can also charge bash the fountains and other things. Bosses also have mostly logical weaknesses. Stone bosses versus rock smashing breath, water and ice bosses vs your basic ice and fire breath.
The first gargoyle you got allow you to dash to some obstacles to move them. As examples, the kind of fire statues you passed by after the town. I loved that game so much back in the day.
Ogre Battle: March of the Black Queen was a pretty amazing game if you've never played. Might be hard to get videos out of it your first run though, but that took as many hours out of my childhood as the original FF2 USA cartridge I farmed 2 Medusa blades, a pink tail, dragon whip, 2 glass helms on. 😲 Edit: twice you referenced the ghosts n goblins franchise, super ghouls n ghosts was meant as the sequel to ghosts n goblins, this one is a sequel to Goblins Quest on NES, which admittedly was meant to be a spin-off, in as much as firebrand was retroactively named and is meant to be that one red guy in ghosts n goblins, and this is kind of his story.
For SNES recommendations, you've gotta play Actraiser 2 if you're looking for an insanely difficult game and Actraiser 1 if you're looking for a city builder/action game hybrid and both are insanely addicting. EVO: Search for Eden is also really cool. You start as a primordial fish creature and collect body parts by eating other monsters. Eventually, your actions dictate your next evolution until eventually you turn into a caveman. It's a little grindy, but still really cool.
Oh, man, this is easily one of the best games on SNES. Fantastic stuff. If you like this, you should try the other Gargoyle's Quest games - this is basically GQ3.
@@ausgamecollector Definitely. I like to call it a proto-SotN. And it's probably no coincidence that SotN is my second-favorite game of all time (just behind Chrono Trigger) and I happen to love Demon's Crest as well. GQ1 is a fantastic game as well, and it's astounding how much atmosphere they manage to pump out of a Game Boy game. The amazing soundtrack goes a long way in that regard. GQ2 is the weakest of the bunch, but still well worth playing.
Your control of the character for it being a new game to you is crazy good. This is an awesome game. I really like the actraiser games. If you like shoot em ups then maybe axelay for plane style and cybernator for more of a Metroid style.

So I know Ryukahr has already played Super Castlevania IV, but I highly recommend he plays *Castlevania: Bloodlines* on the Genesis! It is also a classic that I think he might enjoy!
@@davidwatkins8474I remember when Ryu finally collected the Crissagrim sword in the upside down castle. If he plays this game again with the same save file, he should collect 2 Rings of Varda to see how strong this sword can get.
Bloodlines is the best classic Castlevania game. Or at least it's equal to Rondo of Blood although for different reasons. Its so fast paced and feels amazing to play. I don't consider Super Castlevania IV to be a classic Castlevania game, because it plays very differently. It's basically its own series, a 1-game series that never got a sequel. But yeah Bloodlines is absolutely a classic Castlevania game, it's that NES style gameplay taken to its logical conclusion. It just feels so great. I always thought Super Castlevania IV felt very slow and sluggish but Bloodlines absolutely doesn't, the gamefeel is on point. Rondo of Blood is mainly amazing for just how big it is, so if you ever fall down a bottomless pit you don't die, you end up in a brand new level and keep going from there so it's got like 10 different routes through the game. It's really bloody difficult though, or you could say it's really rondo of bloody difficult.
4:47 I was waiting for that realization to happen :D This game is actually the 3rd game in the Gargoyle's Quest series on gameboy and NES. For those familiar with that series, flying was a big part of it, but your flight was limited and was something that you "power up" as you go. So having it be infinite in this game was really cool. Plus later transformations make it so you can freely fly up and down too. Such a good game...

This is my all time favorite snes game. There is another game that's a prequel to this. I have sent Capcom emails asking for a sequel many many times...
I am so grateful you got a chance to experience this game. This is one of my childhood favorites. This was also my 3rd speedrun. It has some of the best graphics on the system and this game oozes atmosphere! I hope you enjoy the rest of your play through!
It made me so happy you found this game. There’s so much more to uncover that is in this video so I’d wish you’d finish it. I think you’ll love it. I’d also recommend the messenger like many others in the comments have. Great challenge and fun gameplay.
I just bought a Raspberry Pi 4 from Amazon and an old 9" screen RCA CRT T.V on eBay it's also portable so I can use it while I go camping setting it up today been wanting to get back into retro games and revisit my childhood, jus taking a break from modern gaming cause nothing beats those classics man that nostalgic feeling you get when the music first kicks in and that old familiar rush that takes you over.. 🎮 awesome video bro!!! 🫡
Yes! I wanted you to play this game, I couldn't remember the name of it, but as a kid I could never figure this game out. I even rented it several times from blockbuster to try and beat but never could.
If you want a real good game, where you explore like metroid. Give "Air Fortress" a try. It's got space fighting like r-type, then dungeon exploration like metroid. Every level is different, but it's very challenging as well.
I am so glad to see more people discovering this game. Believe it or not, while this is a more-or-less stand-alone prequel to Ghosts & Goblins/Ghouls & Ghosts, there are actually two other games that star Firebrand here as their playable character. Gargoyle's Quest on the Game Boy, and a game of the same name on the NES. Oh yeah, the guy in the Dark Town that talks about you reacts differently to your transformed states using the Elemental Crests. Often, he'll give you hints on how to use them. Try talking to him with the Crest of Time...
@@budgetcoinhunter Yeah absolutely, but they're fun in their own right. The concept is definitely most refined in DC, and most polished, but first two are still pretty good.
Oh hell yes! Love that retro games are back would love to see more of this for sure. Act Raiser would be a hell of a game to see you do. Boss fights are fun and then a boss gauntlet at the end. Bad part is, it has city building sections that slow things down a bit, but still very fun game to play and figure out the secrets.
I’ll watch any game as long as you’re the one playing it. I bet you’d like Shinobi III on the Genesis. Boss fights are fun, the music is awesome, and the platforming is gnarly especially towards the end.
So Ryu.....I know you may not see this because you are a very busy man.... There is a game that i guarantee you will like for the genesis that most people probably have not played but it is soooo good that anyone would like it if they played it. A hidden gem. The game is called Jewel Master. It also has unparalleled music. You won't regret it if you played it. Have a good one brother and your content is gold.
This was my favorite game back in 97. I beat it many times and I got all the hidden treasures and demon transformations. I’m glad people still enjoy it to this day
I love retro gaming on your channel. Keep doing them it's fun to watch. The platforming is pretty solid in this game, so I'm not surprised that it resonates with you.
This is my all time favorite game. And i think is the most underrated SNES but never got the recognition that deserves and Capcom buried it (aside from a few times Firebrand was a in a Capcom fighting game). Is a shame because is not as good as Mario World or Super Metroid but is on the level of Megaman X or Castlevania IV.
This is an amazing game with some really nice unlocks/powers. The true final boss was a lot of fun too. It’s been years, but there is an ultimate gargoyle you can unlock from what I remember. It’s really worth a full play through. I think you would love it.
This game is so great! One of my favorites from my childhood and definitely an underrated "hidden gem" on the SNES. Goes without saying but there are a ton more secrets to find. If you end up playing more of this I will absolutely watch every episode.
I cannot believe you have not played this game. I freaking love this game. There's even a secret final boss if you collect all items and then kill the normal final boss.
I love this game! Just about every level has hidden branching paths. Also, the guy hanging out by the fountain will react differently if you're transformed.
Cool retro games I like (in no particular order): Punch Out NES Super Punch Out SNES Castlevania Bloodlines Genesis Castlevania Chronicles PSX Rock ‘n Roll Racing SNES The Lost Vikings SNES Star Tropics NES Star Tropics II NES
This is actually a sequel to the Gargoyle's Quest games, if you want to know more about Firebrand, that's where you would find the info. As for game suggestions, Dragon Seeds PS1, not only is it a great game, but your namesake would definitely be shown.
Still watching, so not sure if you found out what a vellum is yet. It's a parchment of paper to write spells or enchantments on. lol. Also pretty entertaining to watch I'll add.
And you have not played yet "Road Runner's Death Valley Rally" for the SNES.... great graphics, have some platform, some puzzle.... would be perfect for you :D :D
I am so excited to watch you play this game!! I spent HOURS on this when I was a kid. I love watching a game I know played from a new perspective!! Please, more retro!!
One of the best games for SNES. So many secrets you are missing. And there is a secret ending with a pretty tough true ending boss. You're going to get hooked very quickly.
One pretty obscure and difficult game would be Demolition Man on Sega Genesis. A video game based on the movie with Stallone. I found that really hard as a kid but played it a bunch.
Bought this game when a local KB Toys closed and I was searching through the game bin. I had played Gargoyle Quest before, so I knew I had to snag it. Awesome title, from the music to atmosphere and skills.
Before Castlevania: Symphony of the Night this game perfected gothic horror exploration. If what I hear is to be believed it also fell victim to the 'satanic panic', with many returning the game due to having demons etc. Unlocking the true final boss does require a lot of 100% completion 'side quest BS' though, such as having to beat Level 3 of the Headbutt game. Would love to see a modern Metroidvania Demon's Crest. Try Super Adventure Island 2 if you want to try more exploration.
RAYMAN for the PS1 It's a fantastic platformer where your weapon is your disembodied fist you can wind up and punch across the screen The difficulty ramps up each "area"
love this game! one of the few imo genuinely underrated/overlooked gems on the SNES, even though over the years more people have become aware of it. you gotta get in a metroidvania mindset for this one though, it's not just a straightforward platformer but considerably more complex and interconnected and revisiting stages is basically mandatory, if only because almost all of them have multiple bosses and stage exits with numerous rewards attached. you seem to have figured it out by the end of this vid though ;) . I gotta say tho, I am genuinely impressed by how well you handled that skeleton boss in the boneyard. As you can probably tell, this guy is a smidge more difficult than other early bosses and is one of the first walls players have to overcome. even when properly prepared, he can take a couple of tries just due to how easily he can get hits in on you due to his large hitbox. I'd really like to see you play more of this, it's always interesting seeing people come into this genuinely fresh and slowly figuring out how much this game has going on under the hood.
Oh! Always nice to see someone discover this rare SNES gem. I'll give you a couple tips without spoilers. First, you don't want to 'fly over' everything because this game is very, very non-linear. Literally most of the game could be classified as "a secret" in the definition of other games. In this case, you actually got the stronger Air Crest before weaker Tornado because of very lucky choices. Second, all of your powers and projectiles are different, including damage/usage, so experiment and try using them to interact with anything that draws your eye. You can and should switch between powers in less than a second with practice. (It's even useful inside boss fights... ) Third, there is a "true ending" that happens to include one of the hardest and most awesome boss fights on SNES. Reaching it requires 100% collection of powerups etc, and you should absolutely do it. If you can tolerate dying fifty times. Ha. Edit; And on the map screen, there's an overhead view that will help give you a little bit of direction. But not every location is revealed...
This is a freaking GEM. Ryu is doing great on the oldies. I hope he plays donkey Kong country 3 soon SHADOW OF THE NINJA ON THE NES THE SOUNDTRACK IS LEGENDARY
As a kid, I had a gaming magazine with a guide for this game. I was obsessed with the graphics, gameplay, and story. The first time I got to play it was over 10 years later on the 3ds. What an amazing game though!

I'd love to see you play through "Altered Beast" for Sega Genesis. Kids used to line up for this arcade at our old bowling alley.
This is my all time favorite snes game. There is another game that's a prequel to this. I have sent Capcom emails asking for a sequel many many times...
Beat the secret final boss, the Dark Demon!
I was never able to beat that guy. Gave up and never came back to it. Could probably do it now if I tried again.
36:49 Killin me dude!! You have 3 slots on the top right. Equip all your upgrades and quick change between them.....please 🙏
GOTTA PLAY GARGOYLES QUEST I & II
I am so grateful you got a chance to experience this game. This is one of my childhood favorites. This was also my 3rd speedrun. It has some of the best graphics on the system and this game oozes atmosphere!
I hope you enjoy the rest of your play through!
Secret of Mana
So good! Beat it twice back in the day and then again a few years ago with my son.
One of my childhood favorites! I don't think I've ever heard anyone mention it.
@@DoinThatRag it's difficult i tell you that much
More is this, please!
Love that you're giving this gem a chance
Would love to see some more Lufia gameplay
I am so glad to see more people discovering this game. Believe it or not, while this is a more-or-less stand-alone prequel to Ghosts & Goblins/Ghouls & Ghosts, there are actually two other games that star Firebrand here as their playable character. Gargoyle's Quest on the Game Boy, and a game of the same name on the NES. Oh yeah, the guy in the Dark Town that talks about you reacts differently to your transformed states using the Elemental Crests. Often, he'll give you hints on how to use them.
Try talking to him with the Crest of Time...
Always wanted to see you play the original Rayman. Great game but pretty tough. Right up your alley!
So glad you finally played this!!!! One of my FAVORITES OF ALL TIME! Do Contra 3 Alien Wars SNES! Kabuki Quantum Fighter NES! Gunstar Heros SEGA!
That's third game in the series, you should check out previous entries called Gargoyles Quest
Nice thing is you don't have to play the others to enjoy this one.
@@budgetcoinhunter Yeah absolutely, but they're fun in their own right. The concept is definitely most refined in DC, and most polished, but first two are still pretty good.
Duuude yes! My favorite game for 30 years lol the music is amazing. Hopefully you give it a full playthrough. Gets intense!
2:11 More out of context Ryu! 🤣
Filthy comment 🤦♂️
Jealous you beat me to it 😏
Oh hell yes! Love that retro games are back would love to see more of this for sure. Act Raiser would be a hell of a game to see you do. Boss fights are fun and then a boss gauntlet at the end. Bad part is, it has city building sections that slow things down a bit, but still very fun game to play and figure out the secrets.
Golden Axe would be fun to see.
I'd really like to see you beat the true final boss. It's one of the most difficult final bosses of the SNES era
can we get the true end of DKC2 please
Animal antics...
THAT is hard, I love it!
As soon as I commented he figured it out lol "Whattttt , HE CAN FLY!!"
Zombies Ate My Neighbors
He already played that on his other channel
Definitely play through this game there are so many secrets and unlockables it’s amazing
Space Station Silicon Valley for the N64. You ain't ready
this
I’ll watch any game as long as you’re the one playing it. I bet you’d like Shinobi III on the Genesis. Boss fights are fun, the music is awesome, and the platforming is gnarly especially towards the end.
Try the MSU-MD version of the uncensored, Japanese original. Came out a couple months ago. It's just incredible 😎👍
This was always in the rotation at Grandpa's. Damn, those were good days.
Cool retro games I like (in no particular order):
Punch Out NES
Super Punch Out SNES
Castlevania Bloodlines Genesis
Castlevania Chronicles PSX
Rock ‘n Roll Racing SNES
The Lost Vikings SNES
Star Tropics NES
Star Tropics II NES
If you haven't tried it, I would recommend contra hard cops or DK jungle beat
42:57 hell yeah, more more more
Please more of this great game! the things you wanted to push at the beginning make me think of Rygar, please play Rygar too
Thanks for playing this game, it's truly a gem and one of the best Snes games I've had the opportunity to play growing up.
I don’t know if I would say this game “perfected” it. It’s a great game and I own it, but I think the exploration can be a little clunky and obtuse.
RAYMAN for the PS1
It's a fantastic platformer where your weapon is your disembodied fist you can wind up and punch across the screen
The difficulty ramps up each "area"
So many people don't know this game, and there is so much to find in it
I love the old retro games! Can't wait to see more of your videos every week now.
love this game! one of the few imo genuinely underrated/overlooked gems on the SNES, even though over the years more people have become aware of it.
you gotta get in a metroidvania mindset for this one though, it's not just a straightforward platformer but considerably more complex and interconnected and revisiting stages is basically mandatory, if only because almost all of them have multiple bosses and stage exits with numerous rewards attached. you seem to have figured it out by the end of this vid though ;) .
Please complete this game! This is my favorite game of all time and I would love to see you discover all the secrets!
(It's even useful inside boss fights... )
Third, there is a "true ending" that happens to include one of the hardest and most awesome boss fights on SNES. Reaching it requires 100% collection of powerups etc, and you should absolutely do it. If you can tolerate dying fifty times. Ha.
Edit; And on the map screen, there's an overhead view that will help give you a little bit of direction. But not every location is revealed...
I had forgotten this game existed, but I remember loving it.
This is such a hidden gem. I only found out about it way after the SNES era. You can see quality that went into the sprite work and gameplay :)
A lot of classics are getting spiritual successors. I wish Demon’s Creat would get one as well. It’s such a cool game.
Just keep playing it! That is what we want!
love when you play retro games
This is a freaking GEM. Ryu is doing great on the oldies. I hope he plays donkey Kong country 3 soon
SHADOW OF THE NINJA ON THE NES THE SOUNDTRACK IS LEGENDARY
As a kid, I had a gaming magazine with a guide for this game. I was obsessed with the graphics, gameplay, and story. The first time I got to play it was over 10 years later on the 3ds. What an amazing game though!
This game blew me away as a kid. The bosses, the music, the transformations. 👌
