Pumpkins' music got me through my teenage years. I don't listen to them much right now, though I can still remember most of their songs and lyrics. Thanks for the video, I've just finished listening to the whole Gish album and subbed to your channel. Might even buy myself a guitar and amp and pick up where I left off 20 years ago.
Say what you want but this CD deserves its place in history and one of the best ever. Dark Side of the Moon, Cosmos Factory, Moving Pictures, Syncronicity, TEN, its up there
Man, thank you! Way back when we just had tabs. I was a buzzed head kid in bootcamp when this came out. The other guys called me Hippie. All things considered good times.
Billy's guitar work is an oddity to me. I don't generally think his riffs are all that catchy but sonically they sound amazing and I think his strength lies in the solo parts.
He’s definitely got a unique style, quite rare to find someone so well rounded when you consider he writes a tonne of their tunes, riffs and solos. And sings! Plus the tone on Siamese Dream even has its own signature pedal. Not bad 🤘😀
His riffs are basic and repetitive. What really made the band complete is the drum riffs and the volume at which they played. Not sure if you've ever seen them live in the early 90s. But they were loud AF. I used to love them until I saw them. Once I saw them live. I saw right through them.
Dude, congratulations !!!, you have the best channel to teach people how to play their favorite songs... it's a very easy method: just pick up your guitar, watch and do the same! .! ... good production, no bullshit, no boring talk like you were a TV presenter, straight to the point and you know, all those unnecessary and useless teaching methods like "put your 2nd finger on the 3rd fret of the 1st string" ... oh , how stupid is that !!! you're the best 👍
Ah thanks so much for the kind words, i'm still learning so trying to improve the lessons all the time, so it's great to hear that there's a decent balance to them! Thanks :-)
Snail reminds me of Pearl Jam when I hear it. I like this record in a similar way that I enjoy the Food Fighters' record. It may not be lyrically strong, but the music just rocks. And thanks for reaching me how Daydream goes! I really enjoy your channel! You bring great energy to your videos!
Nah, that sounds like an elitist BS from a fanboy. I'm a fan, and find Gish nowhere close Siamese or Mellon Collie. Drop the 'true fan' playground stuff.
@@PiotrBuczek 🤣 I love trolls! Mellon collie is when they became “The Smashing Pumpkins “. “The” changed them 😆. Butch Vig’s producing was huge for them. Something did change though with the collie. Two albums worth of songs to make one album worth of good material. There were definitely throwaway tracks on there. I agree Siamese Dream was amazing and what made them famous. I seen the Today video every morning with my breakfast for at least a year in high school. This is a pointless argument and I see where you’re coming from. It’s the same with Metallica. I wasn’t into their early stuff but black made them huge. I liked a couple early songs but I wasn’t really into the lack of melody.
I do not think of myself as a smashing pumpkins fan. Never been into it like that. Never will. But when an album comes on(because they are an album band), Holy Shit. So much better than I will ever give em credit for
@@LetsPlayAll All good chap! It sounds fantastic! I don’t know how you figured all of them out. It can be hard to do. This album is truly an over looked classic. In fact, I have it as my wallpaper on my phone.
Hi Matt, I always wanted to ask you where you learned to strum? Your strumming is perfect and constant hitting all the strings up and down. The reason I notice so much is my strumming sucks. Going down is fine but up the pick seems to get hung up on the strings sometimes and is very uneven. Got any tips for this funky strummer?
Thanks mate, just keep your strumming hand as loose and relaxed as possible and perhaps use a lighter gauge pick. Other than that it’s just practise, hope that helps!
Mostly by ear but I do watch as many live vids as I can for the more unusual tunings or to check i'm playing it with the right chord voicing etc. The more you do it the easier it gets and you start to be able to hear chord progressions like a G to an Am for example or an F to C, then you get quicker at working it all out. It's writing out the TAB that takes the time tbh!
Billy’s genius riffs are so underrrated!
Agreed!
Pretty sure James Iha also wrote riffs
No es un genio, es un pelado cara de papa...
No, they’re not. They’re highly appreciated
the riffs themselves weren't really anything complicated, but his songwriting as a whole was extraordinary
That's like ranking the Top 4 Beatles
Billy’s style is so unique. Over 20yrs, Im listening, practice to play these thing. But never satisfy
Yea he's a great guitarist and an awesome songwriter for sure! I think he's credited with every track bar one on this album
This album makes me feel nostalgic………….exactly like it did 30 years ago!

I never realized how similar “window Paine” was to link wray’s “ramble”
I believe you meant "Rumble", but YEAH MAN!! I never made the connection until you pointed it out!!
Awesome! That Faith guitar sounds lovely.
Cheers Richard! It's just straight into my audio interface with a touch of reverb :-)
I love this album! The guitar work always blew me away! Siamese Dream next please! This with Jimmy Chamberlin`s drumming....My God.
Thanks Joe! Yea Siamese Dream shall be done! 😀🤘

How does it remind you of pearl jam? Can you even compare the two, I don't reckon.

Spot on !! Makes you to want learn the riffs 👍🏻

Great stuff, but I’d like to see the gear used to get the specific tones.
Thanks John, a few people have asked about that so I’ll be incorporating that into this format for sure 😀🤘
you're playing is great but dude you're tone for Rhinoceros is fucking on point. Good job man!

What are you using for the Gish distortion sound?
Ah can’t remember mate tbh! Likely Friedman be-od or funny little boxes 1991 if I had it back then!
What guitar brand is that sunburst strat? Nice playing too!
It's an Oswald custom strat - awesome guitars! oswaldguitars.nl/
Uggghhhh Love 💘

I'm wondering why he's no playing those kind of riffs anymore....
Did you use any pedals ?
I did mate, I’ll be including the pedals I’m using in the new vids!
That new Stratocaster ❤️😭
thanks mate :-)
What pedals did you use for these face-melting tonez?
I can't remember on this one tbh! Probably my Friedman BE-OD :-)

it's not a top 10 but the 10 songs of the album
Do any of these riffs use a gallop technique? Or is that just a rhetorical trick?
not as such, but a few have an 8th note then 2 semi-quavers but it's not in a repeating fashion like gallop style riffs
What is your gear, sir?
I think I was using the Friedman BE-OD for a lot of this but more lessons/gear related Pumpkins content coming soon!
Is that an hss pro? Daphne blue?
It’s a Suhr classic (I think) but yep daphne blue

Fender guitars?
Never heard of 'em.

Ha you should have just played the whole album
There's only 10 songs on this album
True! Well 11 if you include I'm Going Crazy I guess, so 10 riffs ended up working out well :-)

What amp and effects did you use? Sounds great!
Thanks! I actually can’t remember for this one, possibly FLB 1991 and Victory V40 amp!?
top 10 riffs from pearl jams ten
Already done mate 🤘😊
Am I the only person who noticed the riff in Shine from Collective Soul is a straight rip off of a riff in Snail?
So basically just main riff of each song...
😳
Top 10 riffs from Gish? Out of how many total? 😂
haha this is a very fair point but I had to go for my faves, which just so happen to be the main riffs from each track ;-)
Great video! Thanks man!!
You’re welcome Steve!
Sounds really good dude

Oh wow! Just from watching this I just realized Window Pane is just basically Link Wray's Rumble, re-imagined! Cool!
