  • These are the pedals I used in my latest covers of Siamese Dream (by the Smashing Pumpkins) to emulate Billy Corgan's lead guitar sounds. This time we make it work with just pedals for playing live.
    Notice how there's no Mutron Bipase?

    Makes you realize how much production Butch and Billy put into the recording of the album. Never in a thousand lives would I contemplate about using 6+ pedals for a lead sound. Makes me realize how much of a sonic architect Billy is. I suppose the less is more approach simply didn't cut it back then :) Now I understand why he was using a looper switcher on the Siamese Dream tour. You can see it in many videos. Such a crazy record. Soundwise totally unique. Almost a bit alien, really muddy sometimes - but it worked 100%. Funny that no band (at least to my knowledge) ever tried to use a similar sound configuration for their records. You wouldn't dare to get too close to Siamese Dream because it's so all encompassing and recognizable. The guys at EHX in New York probably keep a Billy Corgan altar with candles and a Big Muff in the middle :)

I dont want to sound like someone else but there are things I love and would like to barrow from it. I remember seeing them play the whole album live Lalapalooza 1993 I think it was. • @michaelfowler3187

    I find the dist 2 sound not only has a special way of hitting the front of the big mutt but it also on its own really captures for me the sound and low end subtle grit of the machine ii (2) album. Songs like vanity - that warm growling guitar- I get that from my Made by Mike dist ii.
    Also the clean to grit transition of a riff like Drown- very easy to find that balance on the dist ii. If you are a pumpkins fan but aren't necessarily looking to cover / tribute their material, the dist ii really made me feel like I was racing on Billy's track - without stepping on his style too much.
    Get a made by Mike Uk dream box, so much fun.

Does (or did) your guitar shine through in the mix or does it just get lost in a mush of scooped fuzz? I know BC didn't use the Muff for live applications. The output on the V4 comes out much louder than the V5 for some reason, I actually love the V5 sound a little better. Of course I also had to get a JCM800 with KT88 tubes for that super clean tone to play them on.

  • @JohnSpo
    @JohnSpo Місяць тому +1

    I made a helix preset for the cherub rock solo and it's a lot of the same effects you're using. I use their "retro-reel" and that's pretty much what the strymon is doing here. I have the synth running parallel at one point in the chain with the mix down to keep it sort of subtle. I have their mutron bi-phase model on there as well. I can't remember the exact amp model I'm using, it's either a JCM 800 or JCM 2000, with the drive up and a good amount of mids, and a treble booster into a big muff model. I can't remember if I put any other modulation on it. I might have done a chorus or a very slow flange set very low. I think I also used a wah set on one frequency with mix down to about 40 or 45 just to get some extra pop on the mids.

    Amazing, in depth video Eddie, this is helping me a lot through my endless journey to nail the SP and specifically the SD sound. Thank you a lot!
    Just a few questions if you don't mind... First, is there a specific reason you're running your dist2 AFTER the fuzz(es)? I'm currently running a Boss SD-1 (waiting for my MBM Dist2) INTO the op-amp fuzz to give it a more byte in the solos, but haven't tried the other way around. Second... do you think the op-amp fuzz would cut in a live situation with this settings, i.e. tone stack on and tone knob at 1 o'clock? I've always had the impression that switching the tone stack off would result in a rounder and more organic sound.

      Thanks! I've been messing around with a JPTR Effects Katastrophe to get some MCIS type sounds. Any of the Marshall in a box pedals with a clean boost will get you in the ballpark. The pickup type matters more for the MCIS sound compared to SD. A humbucker or red Lace Sensor in the bridge is pretty critical for the MCIS high gain tones.

    Awesome.
    About the phaser though, I'm not sure just any phaser would have the same effect. I've compared a vintage Bad Stone, Mutron Phasor II and MXR Phase 100, and the Phase 100 is definitely the one to go with on Siamese Dream. Especially Mayonaise.

    • @EddieClark
      @EddieClark  2 роки тому +1

      Keeping the rate and color of other phasers can get you in the range but ultimately I agree with you. The Phase 100 is THE phaser for SD.

    Also, the most illusive tone on that album to me is just that intro riff in Rocket. I definitely hear a subtle tape flange effect, especially in that last moment right before the drums kick in. But is it the MXR Dist II > Muff? Or was it just the Microsynth into a fuzz? I need to knowww!

    Love the video, very clearly done. I went out and bought the pedals I didn't have. Do you use the Buzz tone with the switch flipped up towards you or toward the ground? The volume jumps way up on one of them. With the settings I see in the video for everything I sometimes have issues getting whale scream sounds when the strings aren't silenced between notes.

    • @EddieClark
      @EddieClark  Рік тому +1

      I had it at the absolute end of the chain in this video but on my actual board, it's before the Eventide. I don't find it makes a huge difference on a mono board like in this video. However in stereo operation, I prefer the Eventide last because it doesn't mix down the stereo signal coming in to mono before applying it's own stereo effect (as the Deco does).
      If you listen to the audio in my "Soma Sound" video, that was recorded with the Eventide last.

      Thank you very much! The Pog might be able to stand in but the pedal I recommend as a stand in is the EQD Bit Commander which has the bonus of not needing the compressor to keep the note sustained. The settings for the Microsynth are:
      Trigger: 0
      Sub Octave: 80%
      Guitar: 90%
      Octave: 100%
      Square Wave: 100%
      Attack Delay: 0
      Resonance: 40%
      Start Freq: 45%
      Stop Freq: 55%

    Hi! I've started building this rig (though I ended up going with the bit commander over the microsynth due to board space constraints). I just wanted to clarify something that you're doing that no one else seems to be, Big muff FIRST before the lead chain loop, not the other way around?

    • @EddieClark
      @EddieClark  2 роки тому

      Awesome to hear. The Bit Commader subs in nicely for the Microsynth. Good choice. I ran the Muff that way on that board mostly due to lack of choice in the pedal order with the constraints I put in place for that rig. Also, because I'm not really using it for many leads and the few it gets used for have a bigger sweep sound from the modulation being after (re Mayonaise). The rest of the leads are the other pedals in the chain. Hope that makes sense. Let me know if anything needs clarification 👍
