I always found it a little ridiculous when people criticize a slower patch when the previous one typically gives a massive new area, quests, etc. Like guys, the staff has to breathe at some point.
Even from a lore or story perspective it surprises me how many people are stunned there’s a patch where normal things happen. We spent three patches with a nation in crisis; now we get to see how it normally functions.

Relatively new to the game, having stated a bit under two months ago. But I have played other games online for decades at this point.
If this constitutes a typical "content drought" then the Genshin Community has been eating too good for too long to recognize what a true content drought is.
While I can see how there is little new to do in the quieter patches, there are still new things to do with each event. It seems like there is almost always something going on.
As for me, I have 4 years of stuff to catch up on and even now barely feel like I have the time to do so in this so called "content drought".
I'm more likely to burn out by the time I get close to catching up at this rate...
I suppose it speaks well for the game if this is the level of "drought" it takes for people to complain about wanting more.

I feel like the Aranara quest should have been an interlude quest instead of being unvoiced. Genshin must be a cat with nine lives considering how often the game was claimed to have "died"...
Honestly, i think Genshin, right now, is at it's best it has ever been. The Fontaine Era gave us so much epic gameplay and true bangers in terms of characters. Tons of people in my circle of friends picked up the game because of Fontaine and i think that is a good sign. As far as i know, the community (and the fandom) is growing and thriving. Heck, there even were concert events that were sold out in a flash, so they organized more concerts that sold out quickly too.
Sure, the dry patches aren't that great. Would i prefer to have content updates like the finale of the Fontaine Archon Quest each patch? Of course. But that isn't realistic. And honestly, i personally couldn't keep up with that much content since i work and study and also need some time to sleep and stuff. I don't mind the dry patches that much. For me it is just like the one comment descried it.
Also, i predict a huge spike for genshin in roughly two and a half weeks, because then we'll get Arlecchino - And the hype for her is going strong already. The drip marketing is also helping to build it up too. That surely is what a "dead" game looks like, of course. So yeah - Let's see how "dead" Genshin is claimed to be in 3 weeks.

I agree with most of the points in the video, but I think another key problem this time around is that there's no Dainsleif quest in 4.5. The pacing feels much slower for the main Archon quest compared to previous regions, we've gone 3 patches now without any significant story developments in the main Archon quest when there usually would have only been 2, so I think that contributes a lot to the current dissatisfaction and the sentiment that there's too many dry patches.

If I can add my pov: as a new player (septembre 2023), and I started to play when there was a LOOOT of content. My feeling about this was that I felt very overwhelmed by all of this.
Now that I finished all the main things to do, I have a weird feeling: I enjoy a lot playing in "dry patches". When they add a lot of contents and events, I tend to just log in the game, play until my 4/4 daily quest equivalent is full, log out, and wait for the next day to continue.
But when there is no content, I need to fill the 4/4 daily quest without a timer event or something like that, so I'm visiting this word that I did not have time to, I'm finding a cave, with chests, with a quest inside, and other stuff! That eventually might lead to a new place I never saw. It really feels like adventure, whereas the new content feels like "forced adventure".
I don't know if it is understoodable, English is not my native language! To sum up, I went from playing 5-10mins a day, to a lot of hours per day on dry patches, being happy to have the time to complete my map, my achievements, etc! 😌

lol yeah, we should be glad that this isn't a game that requires you to put all your energy towards it all day every day and you don't have a whole region of content every patch or a million events that make you play every day all the time. That leads to some crazy burn out eventually if you're one of those completionist types.
      (like me lol)

For new players there is SO MUCH CONTENT - I mean I started playing a year ago and I've only just now completed most things, still have a bunch of puzzles/chests, all the hangouts and a handful of world quests and I play a lot, so at a slower pace you could easily take 1.5-2 years to get through everything
I'm not sure for veterans who completed content as it came. But something I like to do is always leave some chests/puzzles across the map to give me an excuse to go back to that area
I think the issue is ppl who speed run through everything and then wonder why there's nothing left to enjoy (in all fairness, other than overworld there's just not enough battle variety modes so you're left with nothing but daily artifact farming)
Or they could just start a second account (I did that to pull characters I'm not sure I want to waste my main resources on lol) - it's fun to go through the story again and pick up on lore you missed first time and it's fun to build 4*s or "bad" characters that I have no need for on my main - I just built Qiqi for fun but not everyone likes self-imposed challenges/torture ha

There’s also the problem of the content being meaningful, which is hard to make happen day in and day out, which is why slow patches are necessary to cultivate the new, meaningful content while everyone can catch up on their remaining content without rushing through it and burning themselves out

A lot of it depends when you started. Once you're caught up, well, all you have to tide you over is what is newly added. Things like dressing up your teapot, well, that appeals to certain types of players, but most players probably don't bother with it long term. Same way TCG can keep some players occupied, but doesn't appeal to a lot of players either. Genshin is just kind of lacking something like that for people who want to use their characters in combat situations in a way that feels worthwhile and rewarding.
Of course, if they do add a new region or whatever, it'll be devoured pretty quickly by a content starved player. Just the nature of content that it takes a lot more time to create than it does for players to go through it. Hence why things like MMOs, live service games, and gachas tend to rely on grind or other ways, like an energy system (aka resin), to slow the player down.

Honestly if they really wanted to make this a rest patch, they wouldn't have added the chronicled wish or made Chiori a 5*. People already expected her to be 4*, she's geo which is "bad," and she "requires C1" etc variants of that. Even fewer people would have pulled for her if she was 4*, and as much as people hated on it, the chronicled wish seemed great for those that actually wanted to use it for something specific. They also put in Neuvillette and Kazuha kind of out of nowhere (no events or quests to make them relevant to the story for the patch), even though Lyney arguably should have gotten a rerun first; Lyney is objectively less popular than the strongest dps and strongest anemo support. Yes they probably want to rerun him with Father but we know they don't always keep consistent with the whole "wish 2 banners are for when it's story relevant" or whatever they said way back.

The writing is happening at the same time in a lot of cases and a team makes a dark character and than we get an event and the same character loses all his dark personality or vice versa.

In your video about endgame content, you said that Hoyoverse always needs to keep the casual players in mind. So they won‘t make some content harder so a lot of people don‘t feel overchallenged or left behind.
I think the same would happen, if you have a lot of content / new archon quests in every patch. Casual players would literally feel overwhelmed with all the content, might not be able to keep up with endless new story, quests, characters, builds etc., get burned out by their free time and hobby and would quit.
Also I think your point is true, over the years the game itself loses it‘s novelty generally, even with new content.
So some slow patches and having a go at other games to get "hungry" again and get a great patch is more interesting. You cannot keep the hype up for every single patch.
You need to make players wait and build up anticipation!

Slow patches and internal competition w Star Rail aside, with the current formula of the game we only have 2 regions left until the "END" - and it makes me wonder if that contributes to the bleak outlook for some people, especially big spenders on the game. I actually think that having dry patches is objectively better for the game depending on how that dry patch is being used. I work in development for a major company (something super dry and utilitarian, not something entertaining or flashy) and nothing harms a products stability like being rushed on delivering updates. Having some extra time to deliver better content is an objective win.
The question becomes if they are using their time wisely.

    • @Axterix13
      @Axterix13 2 місяці тому

Indeed. And my feeling with Genshin is that that isn't really the case, that the time is being spent wisely. Fontaine has had a several content light patches now.
On one hand, that's, honestly, not bad. Open world areas are a bit of content, but once done, it's just more open world you don't visit unless a commission or something sends you there. And that "once done" doesn't take that long. It is the nature of content that players devour it faster than devs can put it out. And all of it makes the game take up more space, which hinders the phones the game can fit on. There's a reason Fontaine is more compact. Don't really need more Sumeru desert.
But on the other hand, the dev time doesn't seem to be going into anything in Genshin. We're not getting a new permanent game mode. We're not seeing more events. We're not seeing more hang-outs or anything. We're not seeing permanent things to breathe new life into older areas. There's been a little bit of QoL stuff, but not that much. Overall, we're just getting less. And to me, this feels like that this is because Hoyoverse doesn't really care about the longer term players. They probably have stats on how long players tend to play the game before moving on, and there is probably enough content to keep most players occupied to that point, while also having numbers that show that those of us who have stuck around past that point are likely to stick around regardless.

people should play other games if they run out of things to do in genshin. its ok to just do your dailies and log out, you dont need to crunch through all the content in a week when a new zone/chapter gets dropped. if you are addicted to genshin then try out other gacha games.

Regardless of who is right or wrong, now as a casual player who hasn't spent a dime since ~4.1, I wholeheartedly thank all the enthusiasts, simps, collectors, degenerates, or simply rich af people for their continuously generous support in behalf of those who can't or won't.
Even if this is a "free" game or sth with large consideration to casual gamers ("casual" and yet we still have the occasional meta pvp for a content that barely exists, ikr), devs still need to eat at the end of the day after all.

I started playing genshin when I was unemployed so I dreaded dry patches as I don't have anything else to do. I am fully employed now and I can actually say I like that there are dry patches. I have time to catch up with the things I missed. Yes, dry patches are bad especially for content creators since they need content to stream as it is there livelihood however most of genshins playerbase are just normal people with normal lives. We're so busy with school, work and other shit that it will actually be difficult to stay up to date with every patch if they release major updates every time. So having a patch or two with just filler content can actually give us a breather after or before a major patch.

To me it's rather simple, slow patches are pretty much a necessity, it does takes a lot of work and times for the future content to be made.

I like slow patches mainly as a chance to save up on Primos and build Mora but if they had a secondary endgame like Spiral Abyss that refreshed maybe a week earlier, it’d help the patch feel more like a lull than a death… imo.

Oh btwm aside from the discussion i would like to point out
Unlike the sumeru patches, we still have alot of content waiting
Th archon interlude quest. Bringing daisnleif and seeing the chasm and caribert quest, will be a banger
A fontaine region. Seeing how our fountaine and statue of secen isnt maxed. It's happening
Exciting characters like arlachino and chlorinde. So unlike 3.X where the last exciting character released was in 3.4, we still have alot to looj forward to
The second weekly boss. Wether it be from furina's second quest or whatever, anither banger lore bomb is coming
So 4.3-4.5 was the actual dead phase. Genshin will still be slowish. But its nut gonna be anything like the sumeru times

the point you brought up with the writing team is actually wrong. genshin and starail has 2 different teams in 2 different buildings at the HQ. the reason I think for the dry patches is time, It's difficult it is to make concepts, then build, then QA, then optimize every new areas for the game every 6 weeks. And on top of that, genshin's areas are not simply mountains and valleys. they have world building that goes along with the overarching lore of the game. You cannot rush a good story. I'd love to get dainslif level stories every single patch. But time is the biggest hurdle for Hoyo devs imo.

It would be fun to compare those metrics and other posts with the games that are confirmed to by dying, i.e. there's an annoucement that the servers are shutting down.
In the real dying games that I saw / experienced, you see a lot of things that Genshin isn't doing yet:
    * Radical shift of business model (e.g. going from cosmetic only to true pay to win, monthly sub to free to play whale-bait)
    * If not a whole business model shift, then making item more expensive (including for example lessening the drop rates but then selling a +250% drop rate booster rental)
    * Fake apologies from developers news of big staffing changes
    * Founder quitting in anger

The slow updates allow for players to grind, play other games, and play side quest. There would be a problem if the updates weren't regular or not consistent. If there is a slow cycle after the archon and lantern rite updates, then you can plan ahead for that. Do the Aranara quest, that quest alone can take weeks to complete and has a fantastic payoff. Right now I am finally starting to build my main teams in preparing to tackle Abyss content. Characters I've ignored in the past, I am trying out now that I have time to get them 60 to unlock all their F2P kits. I was finally able to get Itto after having all of his support characters on my account for years. I got my first Kazuha whom we all agree is the Inazuma MVP. Or just play FF7 Rebirth, the amount of content in that game is mindboggling.

I think they plan slow patches to account for player spending too. They know characters like Furina (and probably Arlecchino) are gonna break the bank in sales, so it's smart to give players that know they are gonna want them time to save money/primogems. Characters like Chiori are expected to not sell as well but definitely still make a solid profit regardless.

To be fair this time we had *FF7 Rebirth, Dragon's Dogma 2* and other good titles or even Panacony these 2 months + studies/work so I didn't felt 4.5 dry patch as much. And now I am recharged for 4.6.
I also saw a lot of new players and CCs trying out the game this update, so I guess this worked for the people that wanted to catch up.

I think when players say dead patches are bad they aren't talking about the popularity or revenue for the game, they are talking about their enjoyment, and I do believe it lessened for most players during dead patches. We are not investors for the game after all. We are consumers, it is not our concern whether or not the decision is made to make the most money, the only thing that matters to us is how it affects us.

to me, genshin is a game that's meant to consume slowly. the sheer amount of open world, secrets, quests, challenges, and stories is staggering for something that's free. to me, that's why genshin has very little endgame content, because they expect that the playerbase will consume the world instead of focusing on character building and abyss. im ar60 and i have a staggering amount of backlogged quests im currently shovelling through, along with future announced characters i now have the chance to save for
