A lot of us got to hang out with him at this event-many, many, many brothers and sisters in the arts. He's like the Kung Fu Bill Murray--beloved by all and fits right in with whatever's going on. He played guitar and jammed with a bunch of people. And his Hung Gar is direct from Wong Fei Hung via Lam Sai Wing to Lau Cham to Lau Kar Leung and Gordon, aka Lau Kar-fai. I never get tired of watching him as Pai Mei in Kill Bill, or fight Lo Lieh as Pai Mei in Fist of the White Lotus, much less the other hundred films he starred in including 36th Chamber of Shaolin, Heroes of the East with Yasuaki Kurata, Dirty Ho, My Young Auntie, Martial Club and Legendary Weapons of China.
How great to see a Martial Arts superstar like Gordon Liu performing his forms in person. I think everyone who was fortunate enough to see him live will remember the experience forever.
Gung Fu is a wonderful matial art to learn. Thier are many Styles in Kung Fu. The Wing Chun Style is a very good approach to Gung Fu. Hung Gar is good approach as well. Respect and honor this traditional martial art people. This art form was around long before any of you were thought of. Peace and be blessed.
@BajoCLF I have explained to you that in the Chinese language, words have narrow and broad terms. Kung Fu means "(physical) skills gained through hard work." That is the broad term. I chef using a wok has good kung fu in cooking when he is handling a wok. Martial artist have good kung fu because they have progressed their skills beyond normal. That is the narrow term. If you use kung fu among the Chinese it is implied martial art and that is the narrow term.
I would like you to say that to Sigung Frank Yee in NYC and see how long you remain standing. Hung Ga is one of the most complete systems: Long and Short Range Internal/External 5 Animal: Tiger/Crane (combined) Monkey Dragon Leopard Snake Elements: Earth, Wood, Water, Fire and Metal. Weaponary such as: Broad Sword Staff (Double & Single end) Spear Butterfly Knives Any practitioner of this system do not regard themselves as Entertainers!
@munchichi8 Kung fu doesn't mean martial art. It does mean "skills gained through hardwork". I may be wrong, i'm learning cantonese and a little mandarin, that doesn't mean i can't make a mistake or missunderstood something. If you have any doubt of my lineage, ask me and i will reply or google Chan Kowk Wai. "My masters would laugh at you...", "... not studied Chinese Martial Arts from a real master" I think you are old enough to know that is out of place, i'm not disrespectful.
@munchichi8 Hey. Wu shu means martial art. Modern wushu is not a martial art but kung fu is not kung fu's real name. Kung fu should be called wu shu, or traditional wu shu and modern or contemporary wushu is more like a kind of gimnastics that looks like traditional wu shu kung fu. So they made wushu using kung fu's name. ...or i didn't get it.
Guys unfortantely hung gar is bastard too... such an incredible martial art, such a nice kung fu style with so much moves and power...why people must sell it at the TV? Chiu Chi Ling for example.I bet that a lot of you are crazy with him though he is an asshol...China gave him a shaolin temple and he has about 300 students that they actually don't know anything about the old traditional kung fu and they won't learn anything. I don't think Gordon liu is the same
@BajoCLF I am not trying to be disrespectful either but when someone like you question my own culture, I think it is disrespectful. I am a full blooded Chinese and I speak Cantonese and Mandarin and another dialect in Chinese. I have been training in Kung Fu for over 30 years. There are not too many "real" masters today. Most of them are paper masters. They have pieces of paper claiming they know this and that but have no skills.
@frannunchaku Wu Shu is an organization created by the Chinese government when they wanted to preserve Chinese martial art or Kung Fu. Most of the real Kung Fu masters never taught or comply with the Chinese government. There is a difference between a disciple and a student. Only someone who don't train in real Chinese martial art will claim Wu Shu is Kung Fu and only someone that has not trained for more then 30 years will think Wu Shu is Kung Fu.
@munchichi8 You must be right then. But i didn't found pleasent you say i do not learn from a real master without knowing who my master is. I didn't like that at all. I wasn't puting down your reply in first place, and i said so from the start. Maybe my english isn't so good and there is no way to know you are a full blooded chinese if you do not say so in your first reply to me.
@BajoCLF Wu Shu means "combat technique." It ancient time, generals used wu shu to describe strategic warfare in the battlefield to win a war. You are obviously very young & have not studied Chinese Martial Arts from a real master. My masters would laugh at you if you say that Wu Shu means martial art. Kung Fu does mean martial art. Kung Fu means "skills gained through hardwork." There is a narrow & broad meaning. Narrow meaning is martial art. Please read your Chinese History.
While what you say may be true, it seems that his posture/structure is weak. When watching other older practicianers (Lum Chun Fai/Y.C. Wong) it is blatantly different. The form was supposed to be Fu Hok, but it seems to be cut short. Though different schools have different emphasis on technique, I still don't think his demo was not impressive. I respect Gordon Liu, but not his performance in this instance.

How incredible that such a legend found the time to travel far and wide to showcase and celebrate his art.
How great to see a Martial Arts superstar like Gordon Liu performing his forms in person. I think everyone who was fortunate enough to see him live will remember the experience forever.

i like how kung fu is for entertainment not like fighting like before anymore
I would like you to say that to Sigung Frank Yee in NYC and see how long you remain standing.

Seems like he is getting old (his back haunched). His stances were pretty high.
age is the real master killer
