I watched the terrible Emoji Movie two years ago. It always seems to come back to me each Christmas time. And even after all this time, I still can't stop thinking about it. Not because of the awful story, bad characters or malicious representation of disabled people but... there's this one scene that could actually be construed as.. good? Or at least, the idea the scene is sat upon is something that blew my mind when I saw it, yet seems so ironically trapped and buried underneath one of the worst animated movies of our time. This is the scene I can't get out of my head. This is the scene that CHANGED The Emoji Movie...

Alright, i'll be honest here, i think this movie HAD potential to be good. The problem with it is that it decided to rely on unfunny puns and childish jokes to be funny.

The director actually said he wanted the movie to reflect his journey as a gay man, so that probably was intended to be a coming-out scene. Such a shame it couldn't have been in a better movie.

The Lack of mom's expression completely ruins the romantic mood in the dad redemption scene.
But it makes sense, they are the ‘Meh’ Emoji, they can’t show other Emotions other than Meh ((Unless they have a glitch))

You have my respect for acknowledging a decent scene in an otherwise bad film as well as how confidently and enthusiastically you present your videos. You have my enduring respect for the Ocean Palace music during the World of Warships ad among other nostalgic game tracks... The Wii fit plaza remains a tear jerker.

I’ll be honest I think the emoji movie is so bad most people don’t remember the character’s names. I doubt most people think about the emoji movie when they hear Alex, however I may be underestimating how traumatized someone might have been after watching it. For all I know there’s someone out there who only thinks in emojis and bad ‘cool with the teens’ references now after falling into the down spiraling glorified ad campaign this thing is and not getting back up, in that case that person would associate your name with the emoji movie. Just as I associate it with all the lost time I could have spent doing anything else but watching it.

Let’s be nice to both movies for a moment. Both have some unique animation styles. While yes Spider-Man has much better animation but the character animation and the world building of the emoji movie also looks so wonderful like I believe Pixar made this. Let’s all agree that Pixar made The Emoji Movie.

How to make this scene better: make the main character Alex. He gets transported into the phone and going on an adventure in the phone. He's the one who gets to this app and he remembers it. His companion (can still be an emoji or something else related to a phone) tells him to go in. He does and gets to see not just what he remembers but also the things he might not have noticed before like the guy proposing in the background.
That’s a good concept.
The original story has one total flaw
His crush sends him a picture, and he wants to react with the "meh" emoji
Why the heck guy do you want to react with "Meh"? If the girl you like sends you something, you say you love it!

I remember seeing the emoji movie opening weekend in an empty theatre. The one thing I took away from the whole movie, and the one thing I completely remember is this scene. It didn't move me to tears, but wow was it an amazing scene when juxtaposed with everything else around it.
I remember leaving the theatre and reviewing it on my snapchat by saying that the entire movie should have been about the parents because this was the best scene. I still think this. We need a prequel.
Is there any chance you could take a look at Rise of the Guardians’ for a scene / movie review? Honestly, it’s Dreamworks’ most forgotten movie unfortunately despite it being surprisingly well constructed, at least in my opinion.

I freaking love the fact that you played the theme of seaside hill from Sonic Heroes during the ad.
Man the emoji movie could have been so freaking good. It could have been the lego movie but even more general and relatable.
Mix a focus on the creative world building in apps like you see in just this one, and the plot direction HotDiggityDemon mentioned in his video, and it would have been fantastic.

@@eko9554 i think I could have worked either way. there are some interesting things they could have done with the emojis themselves, but I also believe the human focus could work too (I'm just more interested in non-human characters)....as long as either has good writing.

Also, I feel like more people need to acknowledge the novel version of the emoji movie. It's actually pretty okay. Way better than the movie, could be because all the advisement are out of the way, better plot in general, there's no awkward dance, and the scene with the parents is still good. Not to mention the ending is... different. I think the lady died or something.

In all honesty I liked this movie. I don't tend to think much when watching movies so for me it was just a funny movie that wasn't bad. But I do have to admit that it was a pretty good scene in that movie.
The Emoji Movie? Well, this was a surprise
Right there at that scene where Mary Meh enters the Instagram App and Mel Meh in it. Like it was very "Sad and Emotional" about being a Parent. But I get it being a Parent is Super Hard to do because when your a Parent you got to make sure your kids be okay and not to get in trouble a lot. And also we still love them as our own, that's how they made this Emotional scene to show us how we Parents can do better than be terrible ones.
I honestly like that in the emoji movie they go from app to app it wasn’t done well but the idea is good and if it was a movie about something else it is kind of like inside out with technology

I feel like this movie could have been a great show of shorts to go through the concept of each emoji. There's so many ideas and concepts I love but the movie misses the mark hardcore. They could have focused on the smile emoji one episode, the sad emoji the next one, the meh emoji in another episode and so on and so forth. Instead of having stupid humor and such which ruined the movie.

If not for Gene's mother still having that deadpan tone, I would have found it a bit more impactful. Just because she's also a Meh emoji doesn't mean she can't break out of that for just one single emotional moment! That is why the inside story of Inside Out worked. Happiness could feel sorry for her friends, Anger could feel regret, and Fear could get frustrated. Your default emotions doesn't define you. And a better movie could get that message across too. Maybe deep down, she did feel this and just couldn't convey it right. And that would have been interesting, yet I just wish it were more clear there. Why does the phone even need three meh emojis?
In the novelization, she actually does end up showing more emotion in the paris scene. When Mel confessed his love for her, she was so moved that she teared up from joy and actually smiled
I understand that this is really cool. I just remember when this concept was first shown to me. You might need an lol emoji for this. Or a groan gif. I was about three. (This was a quarter of a century ago, for content.) It was a nick junior show called, "Blue's Clues." The titular puppy, Blue, and her owner, Steve, leaped into a picture on the wall. They called it a "Blue Skidoo.

Because the concept itself is a money-grab, and children deserve better content than a recycled plot with bright fancy colors.
I'll give the film credit in regards to concepts. The Instagram visualization was fantastic as was Spotify being water streams of music. It's honestly really cool.... unlike their use of literally anything else. It's so weird that there actually are good ideas put into this film, but everything else is such a damn mess. It's truly bizarre that I almost think it's in there by mistake. It reminds me of Shrek the Third. Garbage film but Shrek's little speech to Arthur at the campfire is spot on perfection...that actually shows how bad the movie is by not giving anything of equal quality despite showing they could've

Next to none of the comedy lands, it does next to nothing for the story/series overall, it has none of the charm/personality that made the original two (& forever after) so fun & fascinating, and it's arguably why a lot of people see Shrek as a joke series rather than the academy award winning film it was
