Day Tripper Guitars Finally Revealed!!! Part I

  • Using all the guitars available to George and John on the date "Day Tripper "was recorded, a 1963 Vox AC30Top Boost, amp, and snippets of Beatle outtakes and isolated channels, the guitars that actually match the ones recorded by the Beatles are revealed. Guitars tested against take 2 of the Beatles rhythm track and the right channel of the song where overdubs can be more clearly deciphered, are a 2016 Gibson ES345, a Fender 1961 reissue Stratocaster, a 1963 Gretsch Tennessean, and a 1963 Gretsch Country gentleman. Recorded with a Wunder Cm7 U47 clone, Chandler Limited Redd 47 preamps and Waves Abbey Road plugins. With Perry Stanley
One mistake I found in the video: I meant to write On OCT 16, 1965 (when Day Tripper was recorded)
George and John DID NOT have Epiphone Casinos. I wrote Dec 16 by mistake, but they still didn't have Casinos in Dec. Andy Babiuk writes that George and John got them in the Spring of 1965.

Excellent and super thorough video Perry! You can actually see the 345 in the background of the Nov 3 65 Michelle session photos, so we know George had the guitar before the UK December tour

I’ve always had a feeling the 345 might’ve been used. And not only on “Day Tripper”, but also on “Michelle” (with the Varitone switch being employed there).
I also find it strange that it was never seen again after their Dec 65 UK tour. Maybe George just didn’t bond with it?

Completely agree with you. Unless it was used on the solo, I don't hear a solid body Strat anywhere on Day Tripper. Did the Beatles have preferences on the gauge of strings they used? The thick strings used back in the 60's would never get confused with the Super Slinkies of the 1980's! I appreciate your research and dedication in to getting to the bottom of this riddle. The es-345 was a guitar I didn’t even think George used on a recording until recently, and it absolutely nails the guitar on the rhythm track. Also reckon the Tennessean was able to get the right tone for the overdubbed guitar, while the Strat sounded a bit thin.

But if George DID play a Casino, maybe borrowed Paul's, would it not sound just like the ES-345? Did you check that out?
Your attention to detail is impressive. That George would have played the basic track using one guitar, then on the overdub used another hollow body guitar is incredible. Maybe the overdub was done another day and he had the Tennessean with him while he had the Gibson the first day? Amazing that all these years later music detectives are trying to figure it out.

    • @perrystanleyNumber9

Highly improbable that George would have borrowed Paul’s Casino. Paul is left handed, and it was set up for lefty shortly after he got it. The casino sounds nothing like the ES345. I have a vintage 1965 casino. Played Day tripper many times at home on the casino with both flats and rounds. It sounds closer to the Tenny on the overdub, not at all like the 345 which has it’s own unique sound because of the varitone switch. Thanks for watching!

Spectacular as always, Perry. The good news is that the mystery is finally solved for me but the bad news is that i'll never be able to own a 345 :( and play this accordingly. Is that much different the tone you get with the baritone posicion 2 compared to a regular 335?

The 345 pos 2 is very different from a 335 sound. The pos 1 on a 345 is basically the same as the 335 sound. The good news is that the louder guitar on the track that everyone associates the overall sound with is the Tenny, and that is much more affordable than a 345!

That song took me all over. At once point I remember hearing it was George on an SG, but for whatever reason, I eventually read somewhere that it was McCartney on his Casino and that's what I settled on! It would be interesting if someone while Paul and Ringo are still alive if they have recollection of what happened to the Country Gent, the Tennesean, were they both destroyed in the Auto spill off. but, by the time they recorded this tune he no longer used the country gentleman, right? and also, there is a third promo clip for 'day tripper' (the screwing around one where they're wearing the tan shea stadium jackets) where he again uses the 345 so it is very possible that's what he used on the record (nobody seems to know what happened to that guitar).

Paul’s video is amazing and sheds light on a lot. However we only know what were on the guitars at the time of the pictures and that definitely gives a general sense of what was used. For all I know Day Tripper could have had rounds on the Tenny instead of flats. However I got the sound matched with flats . In my mind I proved what guitars were used. What strings could be another issue. Also as I recall in the video there were combinations of strings flats and rounds at some point. So as a general rule I think Paul’s video settles what generally was used by them. I just know that the Tenny matched the record. Maybe it would be the same if it had rounds on.

Yes he did, but was playing bass on the rhythm track. On the overdub he might have played the solo, using the Casino, but the riff in the overdub throughout the song would have most likely been George, especially if Mac did do the solo. The casino and the Tenny can get that ping , but The Tenny makes more sense to me since George used a Tenny for the very first promo which would be sent to the tv show. The Tenny nailed it in comparison to the actual right channel of the recording. It got that thick slappy first note dead on. The Casino gives a nice ping but I don't think it could nail the thickness and clarity that the Tenny has. Plus I don't think McCartney would do an over dub of the whole song riff. It wasn't usually what he did. He was playing solos more. So there is a chance, but IMO very unlikely. Thanks for watching!
