Hey Bri! My Namesake Brother! So good to see ya Man! I gotta tell ya these are my favorite kind of videos! I love when people share their musical journey and the music that shapes their listening experience. I had the exact opposite situation musically growing up than you did. I don’t ever remember music being played in the home I grew up in. I had to find my own way I remember getting a small handheld transistor radio for my birthday when I was a grade schooler it literally had a single earpiece! It wasn’t much but it meant everything to me! I rode around on my bike and I had it rigged up with rubber bands so it would stay on my handlebars and I listened to all the am/fm hits of the era (early70’s) and I loved it all! Rock, disco, pop, bubblegum, and I loved all the one hit wonders. So yeah I had to make my own way music wise until around 6-7th grade when my friends were showing me KISS records and ELO and Styx , the list goes on but yeah that was my experience growing up!One of the things I love since becoming part of the VC is the discovery of so much more music I had no idea existed! I loved this video Brian even tho I don’t share your passion for some of the albums I know they mean a lot to you! My 5 life changers are: 1-KISS Destroyer 2-ELO A New World Record 3-Rolling Stones Some Girls 4-The Byrds Greatest Hits led me to Turn Turn Turn 5-Thin Lizzy Jailbreak I could do a 50 records that blew me away you know that right? 5 is so hard LoL! I love every record you mentioned. All 5 are fantastic. It’s hard for me to understand what it must’ve been like to not have music playing constantly in a home growing up. I mean constantly. My parents would have vinyl party nights on the weekends and everyone would be at my house drinking, smoking, partying, spinning records. It was such a fun time watching my parents and my relatives and their friends get excited about the music and dance all night long! Cheers Brother Brian!!! ☘️
Cool video idea! Fellow Mainer here, and relatively new record collector but I've yet to make any vinyl community videos. Mostly just watch various youtube folks and occasionally comment, but it's awesome to see you and the Cheap + Cheerful Record Collector finding great records in my neck of the woods. Love that Tom Waits record, and many of his others. I definitely had a similar experience with that Avett Brothers album, which shifted my musical tastes during my early college years. Has the vinyl been reissued? Last time I checked on discogs it was really expensive so I've stuck with my CD copy haha.
Hi Andrew, welcome to the VC. You don’t have to make videos to be a part of this great community. That’s the cool thing about it. I watched for over a year before I made my first video. I’m not sure if Emotionalism had a reissue. I’m sure it has been but probably not for some time now. This is the first vinyl pressing that came out about 10 years ago now. I was managing Bull Moose at the time when this was released so I always got to see the new releases. Bought it the first day it came out. Haha… What part of Maine are you in? Cheers, Brian☘️

Last time I checked was several months ago and I think vinyl copies were selling for $120+ on discogs. So I decided I'd wait for a reissue haha. I'm from the Berwicks, pretty much as close as you can get to the New Hampshire border.

Such a good topic, gives insight to who you are. I remember hearing REM from 90210 and I was like wow who is this. I was 8 and it moved me 😂 never heard of Tom Waits until now, I’m listening to that album now. Oh I love when albums find me!
Well, Brian, good to see you're doing well, and a great video thread ! 5 influential albums for me, In the order I discovered them are: Stevie Wonder 's Innervisions, Funkadelic's One Nation Under a Groove, The Beatles SGT Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band, De La Soul's 6 Feet High and Rising, and, Nirvana's Nevermind. Each one of these albums introduced me to different genres of music and were very influential in my musical tastes every since, with a honorable mention of Blondie, who had first led me to New Wave and Punk. Stevie Wonder led me to R&B and Jazz, the Beatles led me to Classic Rock and Psyc, De La Soul led me seriously into Hip Hop, and Nirvana led me into heavier music, like Motorhead and to Alice in Chains and Soundgarden. And there you have it, my musical journey in a nutshell. Great video, Brian!
Thank you for sharing your life changers. I like the diversity. I may have to make a video about the records that got me started into different genres?? Hmmm??? All of the records I chose in this video are pretty closely related but my love for music is all over the map. And I couldn’t agree more about De La. Live that record. The funny thing was we never talked much about music but a lot about geo global issues, Frank actually had about a 160 IQ & was actually pretty conservative. He bought me my first set of home speakers which I still have to this day, JBL 4311b's which were in most of the studios at the time. I've subscribed & really looking forward to your next video. BTW, I love that Jay Hawks record as well. I now will check out the other 3 on your recommendation, 10,000 records in my collection & you never stop finding more great stuff, I'm running out of time my friend. Ok let me give this a go. 1. TNT - Ac/dc It's the first memory I have of being a kid and seeing an album cover and wondering what the music sounds like, it looked dangerous and it when I played my mums Blue roo Albert productions 1st press it sounded dangerous and that began my love of music and probably vinyl. So it has to be no1. Opened me up to classic rock, Metal, hard rock, cock rock etc. 2. Dr Feelgood - Motley Crue First time I started buying my own music Opened me up to punk, glam, etc 3. NWAs Greatest Hits 4. Pearl Jam - Ten This was my generations music, at this point I'm a full on music nut and this album was everything at the time. Opened me to grunge, post rock, alt rock, heavy music. 5. Radiohead - OK Computer This opened me up to a lot of other genres electronic music, ambient, psych, noise, kraut, just off kilter outsider music in general. This was tough, had to leave out country and a few other genres. Probably need at least 10 albums to cover it all.
Some classics in there. We must be roughly the same age. I was at the Girls Girls Girls tour for the Crue. I was a huge Crue fan as a child. And Ten opened up my ears for Grunge and started bringing some harder rock back into my life. It was a nice change for hard music that didn’t have that cheesy edge. Haha Cheers☘️
I checked out this video last night and based on the music that has influenced you, suggest you check out J.B Lenoir (Delta Blues) - album 'Alabama Blues' and The John Butler Trio (from Australia) - Alt-Rock stuff, his live output is especially excellent. Lastly Jack Johson, all is stuff is great. Tom Waits is a favourite of mine as well !
Great records man. We like that Jayhawks album a lot. I have it digitally. I like the Avett Brothers. For me The Carpenter was a big big album. One of my first videos was similar to this topic, I called it My Record Journey. Its albums that changed me. Glad your back man. Hope to see more of you.

Stories of our fists loves, either a human or a record are very special. The Cramps album behind you is one of the albums that would fit into this for me. Brian, great to see you. Losing My Religion is still such a good song. I think that it's the mandolin. That Jayhawks album is so good. I heard it and went on the quest for more, but nothing sounded quite as good. The only thing I found comparable was Blue Mountain. I think that I checked out an Avett Brothers CD from the library once, and now I might have to go back. Thanks, Chris

Hey Brian! Great stuff. Looks like the records are piling up on you in the background there. 😄 I like all of these albums. The one that resonates with me the most being Lyle Lovett. I still need to see him live with his large band. Bucket list item for me. Out of Time was also my intro to REM, but the IRS albums were what I connected with the most after hearing that one. I was a full-fledged fan by the time Automatic came out. The Avetts grew up just outside of Charlotte. So they are legends around here. I’ve seen them a few times. Emotionalism is a really good one. On a side note, I agree that Dave Matthews gets a bad rap. I was a big fan in high school. Don’t listen to him anymore, but I’m not embarrassed that I was a fan back then. I saw Herbie and Head Hunters open for him around 1998. I was falling out of love with DMB, but I went with a friend who is still a big fan of DMB today. Anyway, that led me to buying Head Hunters the very next day. Speaking of bands everyone hates, I see Farmhouse peeking out there in the frame. 😎 Great seeing you, man. Love the stories. The Wild Feathers do a cool version of Blue, give it a listen. Tom Waits' Closing Time album has really been resonating with me recently, the song Martha in particular. In the Curve is such a great song, one of my favorite songs to playon the guitar! Glad to see you back, miss seeing your videos!
I met Jim Avett (their dad) and we had a nice conversation about In The Curve. Such a nice guy: I haven’t listened to the Wild Feathers in years. I need to pull out their first cd. The Thorns do a great version of Blue as well. If you don’t know the Thorns they were a supergroup consisting of Pete Droge, Matthew Sweet, and Shawn Mullins. 3 of my fav artists of the late 90’s. Hey Brian! Great stuff. Looks like the records are piling up on you in the background there. 😄 I like all of these albums. The one that resonates with me the most being Lyle Lovett. I still need to see him live with his large band. Bucket list item for me. Out of Time was also my intro to REM, but the IRS albums were what I connected with the most after hearing that one. I was a full-fledged fan by the time Automatic came out. The Avetts grew up just outside of Charlotte. So they are legends around here. I’ve seen them a few times. Emotionalism is a really good one.
On a side note, I agree that Dave Matthews gets a bad rap. I was a big fan in high school. Don’t listen to him anymore, but I’m not embarrassed that I was a fan back then. I saw Herbie and Head Hunters open for him around 1998. I was falling out of love with DMB, but I went with a friend who is still a big fan of DMB today. Anyway, that led me to buying Head Hunters the very next day.
Speaking of bands everyone hates, I see Farmhouse peeking out there in the frame. 😎

Yes, going to college in the Berkshires, jam band music was huge. Phish is from VT, which is right here. I was spinning Farmhouse just the other day. I still love it!

The Wild Feathers do a cool version of Blue, give it a listen. Tom Waits' Closing Time album has really been resonating with me recently, the song Martha in particular. In the Curve is such a great song, one of my favorite songs to playon the guitar! Glad to see you back, miss seeing your videos!
I met Jim Avett (their dad) and we had a nice conversation about In The Curve. Such a nice guy: I haven’t listened to the Wild Feathers in years. I need to pull out their first cd. The Thorns do a great version of Blue as well. If you don’t know the Thorns they were a supergroup consisting of Pete Droge, Matthew Sweet, and Shawn Mullins. 3 of my fav artists of the late 90’s.

I understand about the early days of the VC. I started watching about 8 or 9 years ago. Steve from Flipside CT was my first channel that I watched and followed. He blew me away. Still does!
