Hello there! I have a question, does the check engine light has to be on for me to use it? My check engine light doesn’t lit up when I turn my engine on but only when I’m driving. I don’t really want to driving around waiting for it to light up. Help?

Basic info:
1)When you turn on the key all the dash lights will light up (with the motor not running). This allows you to see if all the circuit are working.
2) when the motor is started then most lights on dash will turn off. If they are still on then you need to
Deal with them. The check engine light should be off. If it is on then you have to get the code using scanner. If the light is not on there can still be a pending code that is about to happen. So scan it anyways.

@@Riskeralot thanks man. I’m asking because I was driving and the check engine came on and all of the sudden I seem to lose power. The car just seem to stop running. I got a bit worried. So I just got the scanner, so didn’t know if I can use it only when the check engine is on or I can just plug it in and start scanning. I appreciated your reply. I tried asking other guys on here. But didn’t get any replies back.

Hi Tom:
Your issue has 2 solutions:
1) you have an intermittent issue: one way is to look at the freeze frame Data. A the moment the check engine light (CEL) came on. This recorded live data can help record what sensor or actuator saw the issue first or is Broken first.
2) do a wiggle wire test to see if any loose wires can activate on the CEL
If you know cars better you will be able to figure out a few sensor or actuator that is able to have such a dramatic affect on the performance. With the freeze frame you can answer people whom will ask you what the car computer (ECU) saw. Live data mode is also helpful but will require you to know a bit on each sensor and what they should be. In general intermittent issue are harder to find and prove that they are fixed.
The car is tricky because thing can go bad under vibration and different temperatures. I might not be able to fix your issue but I can give you advice or send you to a better direction .
