- After getting a ridiculous quote to reupholster 4 seats for my boat I decided to buy some marine grade vinyl and do it myself.
it's not as nice as the original but I was very surprised and happy with the results. Check it out for yourself and I hope it encourages you to try it also.
you just need some patience and anyone can do it.

The best way is to use the old vinyl as a pattern mark your piece and sew them. When you do it like that it will loosen up with the sun and stretch, you will exspirence the little piece that should of been stappled in which is called a tie down, move on you. The hiedem on the back (Which is the staple hider) to save time is to put new on. Also if you do your whole boat it's wise to invest in a steamer which will help you stretch better then a hairdryer, not to boot safer on the vinyl not to get weak from dry heat, better to have a moist heat. Also with the steamer, you steam the foam back to original position, most of the time. (THIS IS MY PERSONAL OPINION AS AN UPHOLSTER)
Would a travel clothes steamer work for this?
Nicely done. My wife and tackled a similar job 3 years ago. It’s still holding up great and white marine vinyl is a great choice. We got a quote of $5k for the job then did it ourselves for under $100 with tools. I bought the whole boat for $5k, it’s wild how much shops charge for the work and yes it will look better but not 500x better.
they have skills and expensive tools - for piping, stitched corners etc. I understand the cost. I am thinking about doing some myself, but not with fancy stitched corners

The name of the trim that hides the staples is called "Hidem". It's about a $1.50 a yard, so it's cheap to replace. I found that bit of information during my research into attempting a DIY boat upholstery. Thanks for the video. It gave me the extra confidence boost to go for it after seeing your techniques.

This video was extremely helpful as is the info about Hidem. The last part where you were heating up the trim that hides the staples and prying it apart is the part that I’m pretty sure I’ll struggle with the most. My husband and I are getting ready to tackle DIY boat upholstery on a boat we just purchased.Question-is there a certain vinyl that you would suggest, one that holds up well and doesn’t break the bank? If so, can you tell me the manufacturer or where you purchased it?
Great video! I am rebuilding my pontoon arm rests. 30+ years old and the vinyl is actually not in bad shape but the wooden frames of the seats (under the fabric) were rotten. Thanks for the hair dryer tip as I think I'm going to need it to stretch the old vinyl fabric over the new frames.

Just a slab of 3” foam wholesale is $150.00…quality vinyl is $30.00 for roll and pleat wholesale and flat vinyl goods are $15.00 per yard…my price not yours…..yes we mark are goods up in price. We have to spend our time figuring out yardage, placing orders, handling and warehousing those material’s which take up space and must be check immediately when received, if there are any issues with it, we must deal with returning them….retail prices cover our overhead and then we charge for our labor and you bet our expertise. I was just offered $100,000.00 a year if it would be willing to relocate to Sarasota on the west coast of FL to run a shop by a Headhunter…knowledge and expertise in the Canvas and Marine upholstery industry is very valuable and sadly more and more rare….it is a great trade if some of our younger generations would consider it instead of college…

Get an air stapler and a heat gun. Makes life much easier. Good video.
9:30 you need to put only one staple in them do exact opposite side with one staple. You never do a whole side then move up another side...rather go opposing sides on all 4 then place another staple next to and starting over on first side you started at.

That “ribbon” is called Hydem and is used by those of us who do Marine upholstery. It is not advisable to reuse it as it is dried out and will tear like perforated paper.
Wish I could just buy a universal cover to go over the existing vinyl. Haven't been able to find anything like that.

For perfectionists, idk your answer. For me, it's never perfect but way better than moldy looking ruined seats!
If need need to fasten newly upholstered trim to side of boat, how do you send a fastener through the vinyl without Messing it up

How do you determine how much vinyl you need
measure with a fabric tape measure rolls are usually 36 inches by what ever length you need get extra its not that expensive :)

what size of staples did you use? SS staples ?
I used 3/8 size staples. I used up all the staples I bought so I can't be sure but you should definitely use ss staples especially in a marine environment. Thanks for bringing that to light :)

No good if you actually want to take it off and machine wash it.

Been doing upholstery for 20 years. I've seen many seat just like this come into my shop. I "love" seeing diy's seats rusting and falling apart.
Maybe if y’all didn’t charge astronomical prices we wouldn’t have to…
I have looked at this video on corners 5o times and got nothing, because you went silent and super fast for us regular humans.
I have that same problem with some videos I watch tip: you can change the playback speed in the video settings
YIKES!!! HOW NOT TO DO IT YOURSELF…yes Marine shops charge more, I bet if your boss told you that your not worth paying to do your job and they can do it themselves…..you would probably understand why those shops charge what they do. They have very expensive machines that are Marine, upholstery job specific tools that cost a lot of money to purchase and then require maintenance and upkeep, rent, insurance, materials they keep on hand that actually do the job that are actually the right product to keep the sun and weather out of your cushions that they can’t charge you for the whole roll of yet they must have it on hand to be able to do the job like Marine thread that doesn’t rot in a year due to exposure to water, sun etc. Then we have electricity bills, gas and automotive expenses to go onsite on multiple trips, 3 minimum. 1 to bid the job, 1 or 2 to pattern (oh yes and the skills to actually pattern a job that you don’t run and buy a pattern at Joann’s and it takes many years to learn especially pertaining to vinyl materials) and definitely something this gentleman does not have! A 3rd trip to install the job unless it’s a small job the customer brings and drops off which BTW is rare. Just my commercial sewing machines add up to $7500.00 for a walking foot commercial machine that is absolutely a requirement to work on vinyl materials, a commercial surger, a commercial zig zag machine if you do sail repairs, a regular foot commercial machine for more delicate materials such as fabric materials used for cushions and curtains. A bench press for buttons and grommets which all you get at Joanna’s, Hobby Lobby or Michaels is cheap brass not stainless steel. Hand tools to install snap studs which also require drilling ( and knowing where to drill….you know that experience thing. Leather mallets, lift the dot tools which are in the hundreds of dollars alone. A simple shop set up of tools to do canvas and marine work is easily $20,000.0 plus not to mention License’s, Fictitious name filing, Health department certification….and if you end up designing, fabricating and installing commercial and residential awnings which many shops end up doing then you must get your Commercial Awning Contractor’s license…….so before you go watch people who do not know what they are doing and think you can do it yourself, you get exactly what you pay for. Next time someone tells you that your not worth getting paid what you make……might want to realize learning from someone who doesn’t know how to do it is just learning and doing it wrong. And yes I have been doing this since I was 19 and I’m still doing it at 67…that’s a lot of experience talking and I have a do it yourself job someone did themselves that I’m about to do coming up. The gentleman who sold the boat to my client lost money on the sale because he did it himself. It took him months to sell and he based the sales price on information he found online that boats comparable to his were selling for….his sold for $5300.00…..less…..
You miss the point of the video ... he did not say he was as good as a professional just good enough for an old boat. My boat is a 1996, I was quoted 6000 to redo the seats. I plan to do it with a cheap stapler, hair dryer, rattle can glue using good quality vinyl and stainless steel staples.
If my seats come put looking good for 4 to 5 years and have fun with my boat I think I will be a happy man. Save you fancy redos for the people with more cash than brains.
@@jimw6991 my point is if your trying to show someone how to do something, then you should at least do some research yourself prior to doing it yourself and then possibly learn why it costs so much for a professional to do the job when they are paying rent, electricity, insurance, thousands upon thousands in tools and then their years of experience to boot. My point was people should understand the difference and respect someone who has spent a career gaining their skills and tools etc. I am all for doing it yourself and share my knowledge freely anytime anywhere with no threat to my pride or ability to earn my living. I work for people who want a quality product that increases the value of their boat. What they pay me they gain right back in value and I have multiple repeat customers who buy old beat up boats, do the work to restore them while I do their upholstery and they make money every single time. You get what you pay for. If you have no intention on selling and it’s your toy to enjoy, have at it and I respect you for that. But in return show respect for those who are the pros and have spent their lives at becoming craftsmen and craftswomen at whatever it is they do. What do you get paid to do for a living?

Very poor job. The finish is poor and you did not put the seat back like it was with two pieces. I would love to see you do a complex 3-4 tone boat seat.
