In most instances, it's not only because the consumer is not using a well fitted boat cover, but it also has to do with how it's cleaned and what products are used. Vinyl manufacturers will tell you that mild soap and warm water are best. Harsh chemicals eat away at the UV protectant coating, thus causing discoloration, hardness and cracking much earlier than if cared for properly.
Hello Greg, I agree, keep your money in your pocket by not buying leather and vinyl spray products. Especially Armor All that contains silicone which plugs up the pores. Please keep liking and watching!
Right. Car owners seldom if ever use bleach on their car upholstery.
Marine vinyl might last slightly longer but all vinyl and rubber starts to deteriorate after it’s manufactured. I learned from someone else about 303 Aerospace spray. It puts the oils and UV inhibitors back in the material. I’ve had old tools with rubber cords and strain reliefs that looked like they were going to need replaced soon. Sprayed them down and left them overnight and good as new. Never had to replace them.
Hello Dean, Oh, wow. Sounds like miracle stuff. Please keep liking and watching!
Ha ha, more snake oil. Puts back what? Nothing came out to put back.
@@georgeburns7251 Hello George, Oh! Please keep liking and watching!
@@georgeburns7251 I think it’s snake oil. They also advertise “uv protection” yet multiple channels have confirmed it offers basically zero uv protection. Unless it protects from uv degradation in some other way, I think they’re lying about that. It’s possible uv degradation evaporates the plasticizers and oils and the product just puts them back in, but I highly doubt it, it’s probably just silicone in water that makes plastic/vinyl/rubber look good for a few days before ultimately just drying up and doing nothing for protection or longevity.
Most people don't cover their boats or jet skis. UV resistance is only for 650 hours. That's less than a month of UV resistance. If you want to protect your vinyl seat or upholstery, a good cover goes a long way!
Hello Terrible, You got that right! A boat cover will extend the life of vinyl 10X! Please keep liking and watching!
Yep. That 12 hours of night time UV counts just as much as the 12 hours of day time uv. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
@old school auto upholstery techniques. You are super good at responding to commenters and giving useful education. Will be returning to your channel and hope to see it grow. Thank you sir.
Hello Bill, You are so welcome! I have thousands and thousands of comments on my UA-cam channel. I answer every one of them just as I did yours! Please keep liking and watching!
As important is the thread you sew it together with.
Bonded nylon is NOT as UV resistant as bonded polyester! Use bonded polyester for outdoor and marine projects.
Hello Bio, Good advise! Please keep liking and watching!
These are pontoon seat covers. Most pontoons don’t get covered up and don’t get conditioned with vinyl protection. These seat covers for “boats” were not taken care of which will result to what you have.
Hello Wesley, And then there is the ten year old age... Texas sun can be brutal to vinyl. I see this all the time. Many of my customers have the same exact problem. Please keep liking and watching!
Because I’ve been [ relentlessly ] researching a particular thing, I’ve noticed that the evidence shows the auto industry ( particularly off road ) markets marine vinyl as a weather / waterproof solution ( as with marine grade audio ) - to yahoos that enjoy mudding and, adventure-seeking, overlanders.
Thanks for sharing.
Hello Corey, You are so welcome! My opinion is it's the marketing. Call it something in addition to make more money. Just sayin'. Please keep liking and watching!
The TRUTH! Even more true for gym equipment and indoor cushons that will never see the sun. I do wonder about waterproofing (sweat proofing) the foam? What do you think about naugahyde? Thanks as always!
Hello Joey, You are so welcome! So true. Naugahyde is good, but all vinyl get worn our eventually. Please keep liking and watching!
Just for the record that "automotive" vinyl you are praising is Spradling's Softside Marine vinyl collection. While it is also rated for automotive use, it is specifically aimed at oem boat companies.
Hello John, Not praising, just presenting auto and marine vinyl for those who don't know or just learning. Thanks for sharing. Please keep liking and watching!
Marine has mould resistance built in helps to prevent that pink mould boats attract
Hello Andrico, I see molded boat seats all the time. Just sayin'. Please keep liking and watching!
Thank you for this great advice
Hello Mark, You are so welcome! Please keep liking and watching!
What about mold and mildew resistance resistance? Is the automotive vinyl just as waterproof as the marine?
Hello Cyber, When it all comes down to it, Both marine and automotive vinyl are plastic with a fabric backing. Nothing more. Water does not pass through the vinyl. Not rocket science! Hehe. Please keep liking and watching!
Just because you took it off a boat doesn't mean it was marine vinyl. I used marine vinyl on my atv seat 15 years ago. It sits outside 24/7/365 and gets used in all seasons. We get a few days well below zero each winter. My 15 year old marine vinyl seat shows no wear.
Hello Diana, Your ATV seat has super powers! Please keep liking and watching!
I was about to wrap my diy custom taillight trim in pink marine vinyl
Hello Jake, you still can, but don't count on the color lasting very long because of the fade. Please keep liking and watching!
What do you think about religious or consistent use of vinyl and plastic "protectants" and supposed UV protection from products like Armor-xxx or Turtle-xxx?
Hello Vlad, What I think is I never use any protectants at all. I think it is a waste of money. Just keep your stuff clean. All materials age no matter if protectants are used. In the old days I know Armor all contained silicone which made the vinyl and leather crack. Please keep liking and watching!
has anyone ever used sem vinyl paint? love the stuff. i put a clear coat on my boat vinyl yearly just to uv help. if you use colors ive had great results. no flaking or cracking.
Hello Lynn, I do have a famous video about that: ua-cam.com/video/c9WJipydQbo/v-deo.html Please keep liking and watching!
@@oldschoolautoupholstery i did a fresh up for a small plane interior with sem. the vinyl was in decent shape but the colors were dated. removed the seats and panels and sprayed a lite gray with darker gray trim, looked nice. also did the carpets and brushed the nap, the owner was very pleased. ive used it on a vinyl couch and it got me 3 more years before i saved for a new one. thanks for the video
@@lynnallen5528 Hello Lynn, I love hearing good news like this! Please keep liking and watching!
Only lasts about one season.
@@tedmiller1745 Hello Ted, mostly true that. It is only temporary. Please keep liking and watching!
Do you ever do isinglass (clear, flexible plastic vinyl) glass replacement on boats? If so would you do a video on this subject?
Hello Bog, Sure, I could if I ever get that type of customer again. Please keep liking and watching!
Is there a way that I can cover an area on my boat seats instead of having it completely reupholstered? I have some areas that are dry-rotting or tearing up and I saw something that was some type of adhesive that you can just stick over it.
Hello Shady, Sure you can stick something over it, But I wouldn't. I never wanted to do that kind of quality especially since I have paying customers. I have only done replacement and not repairs. Please keep liking and watching!
Nothing lasts forever, just like the paint on a car. Leave your car down on the beach for a year day in day out and see how the paint looks
Hello Rich, I know right? Nature always wins. Please keep on liking and watching!
Great video. I purchased a used 2019 Bennington Pontoon from a local company that does boat rentals and the vinyl is starting to pull apart at the seams. I have been looking at replacing the vinyl and was wondering is this something the standard handy person can do?
Hello Jeff, Thank you so much for saying so! Usually boat parts have hundreds and hundreds of staples to remove and reapply. If you can do that and run the seams through an industrial sewing machine, I think you can do it. Please keep liking and watching!
Rudolph is there a real leather conditioner or lotion that you can honestly recommend it works for car seats? Thank you!!
Hello Summer, You are so welcome! I am sorry to say that there is not. Leather is a natural fiber that degrades over time, just like we do. Hehe What kills leather mostly is moisture, so avoid getting it wet. (Remember Oj's leather gloves?) Second is any exposure to the environment hot or cold. Avoid the sun. The best environment is an enclosed garage. Any product for leather is a scam, save your money. 40 years ago, "Armor All" was a killer because it contained silicone that clogged up the pores of the leather and it would dry up quickly. I hope we all can handle the truth. Please keep liking and watching!
what happened at the end ... ?
Hello Imma, I don't know what your talking about? You may have to watch it again! Haha! Sometimes, Immanutt! Or just being a goofball. Please keep liking and watching!
I have an 03 Ranger bass boat with cracked dried out vinyl seats from the sun my fault I left it uncovered too much.
If Ranger boats sends me the skins , do you think I could replace on my own ?
Hello Berkley, yes I absolutely believe that you can do it. Just go for it. Please keep liking and watching!
You say they are the same but your sample store sample pack has "best" written on the marine vinyl? Which is it?
Hello Saratj, Oh, that was a note to self. At the time I had samples from different suppliers. I wrote "Best", which was best of several sample books. Hehe Please keep liking and watching!
I think for marine they should use fish skins! 😂
You shed some light on the subject of vinyl it's gonna fade and crack eventually, thats why we have guys like you to reapolsture it! 👍
Hello Clem, I could not have said it better myself! You are 100% correct. Please keep liking and watching!
@oldschoolautoupholstery
Videos like these are informative and to the point! 👍
Thanks, bro. I enjoy learning new things since I love cars and other related topics.
@@clemmahabir Hello Clem, You are so welcome! Thank you so much for your kind words! I really appreciate it! Please keep liking and watching!
Yes!😉
What size needle and thread do I use for vinyl.
Hello Good, For 45 years I only use a 135x17 needle for my industrial sewing machine. It sews up everything. Please keep liking and watching!
So leather hyde would be better? Recommended ?
Hello JRv, Leather is only better in the short term as it also ages the same as auto vinyl. I would never use leather for outdoor applications as moisture will kill it quickly. I have done many leather/vinyl combination repairs where they are both wore out, brittle and cracked. The bottom line is age takes it's toll on all of these materials. Please keep liking and watching!
I’ve been using auto material on my hatteras and my glacier bay for 17 years
Hello Mobev, I think that is amazing that you have experienced that. Please keep liking and watching!
Sweet!!
Hello Unfinished, First comment again! Please keep liking and watching!
Thanks for video. Question, do they still make naugahyde
Hello Hotrod, Yes, they still do. But the Naugha's are becoming more rare in that they are now only found dwelling in the uppers Appellation Mountains... Please keep liking and watching!
@@oldschoolautoupholstery thank you. The soft corinthian leather that Ricardo Montalban used to advertise for Chrysler, what was that?
@@HotRod-wv4vm Hello Hotrod, That was sometimes "Fine" or sometimes "Rich" Corinthian leather in the Chrysler Cordoba in 1975 I believe. Please keep liking and watching!
@@oldschoolautoupholsteryhahahaha reminds me of my older brother. His wife asked him what Naugahyde was made from. He told her it was made from baby Naugas. 😂

Are there any fabrics that would hold up under the sun for any length of time? Seems like a synthetic might be a little more comfy.
Hello DR, Most fabris will not hold any water back, or be UV treated and will fad and dry rot quickly. I don't advise fabrics for marine. Please keep liking and watching!
vinyl is synthetic, no?
@@buckmurdock2500 Hello DR, Yes it is. Please keep liking and watching!
The aftermarket trusted brands of vinyl do have superior characteristics. If you spend an extra $90 on a job for marine get 15 years of use instead of 10 years with a non-marine vinyl, is that not worth the extra cost?
I find the majority of problems come from very large companies who order custom vinyl because of the volume they do. They can request mold & mildew, and UV chemicals to be reduced on their custom order, to save $2-3/yard.
Which was confirmed to me by the manufacturer, when I was inquiring about a vinyl I know they produced.
Find suppliers you trust, and back their products!
@@grayscustomtrim Hello Gray, You are so right about famous name materials. Also how well the vinyl is taken care of as in a cover or garage to keep it out of the elements will add years to the life of the vinyls. There are many factors to longevity. Please keep liking and watching!
So do you use automotive vinyl in boats?
Hello TheRandy, I only use marine vinyl in boats because I have paying customers. Please keep liking and watching!
Of course at some point time will take its toll. But are you going to have to replace it in 3 years or 5 years or 10? There is at least potentially a big difference.
Hello Douglas, Both Marine and Automotive are the same vinyl. Marine is UV treated. Both are good for about 10 years in the weather. Please keep liking and watching!
@@oldschoolautoupholstery I am currently testing some marine vinyl samples. I stuck them on a panel and set them out on my roof last September. Once a year is up, I'll post the video. I can tell you already that not all UV protection is the same between brands. Some samples have slight fading, one has pretty heavy damage, and one is virtually unchanged.
@@douglashedenkamp1087 Hello Douglas, Wow you have some patience. I just see the damage that my customers bring to me. In all I believe that after ten years of weather, they all are done. Please keep liking and watching!
Have you had any experience with Formula 4 vinyl cleaner/protector?
It's currently all the rage above Armor All.
(Tomorrow it might be something else...?)
Hello Tom, Never heard of it, never used it. I put nothing on vinyl or leather as nothing is really helpful. Just another way to take your money. Please keep liking and watching!
Thanks. I often wondered if any of it did anything.
@@tomvoncharon6359 Hello Tom, Yep, you heard it here! I just clean with a good grease cutter like Formula 409 or mineral spirits is another good cleaner. Please keep liking and watching!
Where can I purchase auto vinyl?

Have you ever discovered a company that can customize a design on Vinyl?
Hello Mm, Do you mean printed vinyl or embroidery? Or sewn in designs? Please keep liking and watching!
@@oldschoolautoupholstery I just learned a lot from you. My stuff is used indoor and outdoor so this was invaluable information!
I was hoping someone out here could print on vinyl. If my idea is too expensive it looks like I will be doing a sewn appliqué application. I found a site that looks like they can do it but it says they don’t respond to emails for 48 hours. If it works out, I’ll let you know! I am making something that looks like a mushroom- heat vinyl on Marine vinyl does NOT wear well. The amount of heat it takes to make the vinyl stick to the marine vinyl isn’t good and it doesn’t age well. Especially when people are sitting on them. I think sewing it or trying to see it the white spots could be printed on vinyl would work the best and last forever.
@@Mmshroom Hello Mm, Yea, that's a tough one. I would think that what ever is printed would rub off at some point. Good luck with that one! Please keep liking and watching!
lol I use both and explain everything to customer fyi you can get same patterns in both now
Hello Melissa, Yep, it's best if you have a paying boat customer to sell them marine vinyl right? But we know better don't we? Please keep liking and watching!
I should have said in cars I’ve used both marine and automotive especially in convertibles that are exposed or will be expose to direct sunlight. As for boats I only use marine vinyl
@@MelissaKaufman-u4s Hello Melissa, Yep. Perfect. Please keep liking and watching!
Where can I get that book?
Hello CT, Just Google "Upholstery supplier near me". Please keep liking and watching!
You get boat seats that are discolored, dry and cracked , because the owner doesn’t keep a cover on the water craft. None of the boats I have ever looked like that. My 2 cents
Hello Dew, You are so right, A good cover goes a long way in protecting the interior. Please keep liking and watching!
@@oldschoolautoupholstery I assume that when the water craft owners come to you for new seat skins you educate them on paying you to manufacture a new cover for the old water craft. Covers are usually much cheaper than new seat skins.

How old is the marine vinyl you are showing. I am in marine upholstery industry and the marine vinyl i use has lasted over 20 years. You also forget to discuss mold related issues. Marine vinyl is treated to resist mold as it resides in a wet environment. I will pass on automotive.
Hello Trojan, I have no idea of the age of that vinyl. I have seen mold on marine vinyl dozens of times over the 44 years I have been doing this. I do marine upholstery as well. I agree with you, I even have that same swatch book😂

Excuse me, I’m in the midst of restoring a 87 Cutlass Brougham and I wanted to know would I be able to used the same vynil as my brougham canvas top.
@@adampacino Hello Adam, for vinyl tops, I would only use Landau vinyl. Or if you want fabric, go with the Stayfast. Please keep liking and watching!
LoL The ending.

Hello Jeff, Oh you got that right! Please keep liking and watching!
All these poor armatures listing to this video probably selling non marine grade vinyl now. 650 hours is mid grade marine vinyl. Good marine vinyl has over 1,000 hours of UV Protection plus mildew prevention that automotive grade vinyl does not have. The seats you're showing are obviously over 20 years old. Additionally some manufactures use very cheap vinyl that does not last long.
Dont sell automotive grade vinyl for marine applications unless you want a bad reputation. Your video is an opinion not facts. Even at the end you say " I don't think its going to matter"
Hello Joran, True, I would never sell automotive vinyl as marine vinyl. All I am saying is all vinyl regardless of auto or marine get old just the same. Also true, this is my opinion of working with the stuff for 43 years. In the end all vinyl is plastic. Please keep liking and watching!

You're wrong. Different between regular vinyl and marine , Marine vinyl has UV R protection. I am 35 years in Boats upholstery. I can prove you're liar For boats Upholstery, you have to use only marine vinyl and polyester thread, not nylon? My name Admiral Roman. In New York Long Island a lot of people know me.i so you work, you do excellent work, wi you said about marin vinyl, it's not different, it's OK no buy perfect 😊😊😊😊😊
Hello Roman, I have 44 years in the business and you can see my work here: Rudolphsupholstery.com I Googled, but I could not find you. Both Auto and Marine have UV protection, but my point was that regardless of marine or auto vinyl, all vinyls do not stand well in the elements. All vinyls go bad. I know you have seen it because of your experience. That is why you replace it. Please keep liking and watching!
Everyone who owns a boat knows if you slap the word "marine" in front of it, the price doubles.
Hello Tom, You got that right! Please keep liking and watching!
How can we tell you if it held up well, if we have no idea of how many hours it was exposed or the exposure level. I can make any material look like crap given enough time and weathering. The comparison isn't that it didn't last, it is how long do they last under comparable circumstances. This seems elementary. I am not saying you are wrong, just that the argument presented is dumb.
Hello Engineer, What I am saying is, all vinyl regardless will age. Not rocket science. Hehe Please keep liking and watching!

Marine vinyl will not survive the temperature inside a car.

Maybe the thought is hemp seats. But until then, will kill the little vinyl plants and make seats for everything. lol.
