- The process of aeronautical decision making doesn't begin when you step into the aircraft - it begins in the days (or weeks) leading up to a long trip!

Thank you all for the AWESOME feedback! We left a lot of the technical flying jargon in this video since that has been requested a bunch, and I'm glad y'all liked the video. Many are asking why I flew into MSY instead of a "less busy" airport "better suited for GA." I'm picking Chelsea up at the passenger terminal at MSY, so there's one good reason to fly into MSY. The fuel at NEW (lakefront), for example, is $6.01/gal. The fuel at MSY is $6.41/gal. That means a top-off for me will cost $15 more at MSY. The passenger terminal is 24 minutes one-way from Lakefront... it's 2 minutes from MSY FBOs. That close convenience is worth $15 for me based on time alone, and flying into a Bravo airport in a slower GA aircraft is no issue if you know how to stay on top of things. I hope that clears things up for you all!
Great Video as always Josh! Your ADM and general outlook on Safe flying is just incredible... Something all pilots should take notes from! Thanks again for posting.
I thought '1 taco" meant you have a 1000 ft more to climb. Or is that only with autopilot!
ole boy at msy had me dying about hearing himself on youtube. I love talking to those controllers, they are awesome. I fly in their bravo multiple times a week.
As a non american viewer, I would love if you show the general locations you mention and distances on a map to understand when you are mentioning the plan, otherwise I love this channel
One way to visualize is plot the course on Google Earth (or Foreflight if you use it)
Skyvector would probably be your best bet.
Even airnav.com has multiple aeronautical maps of most locations. Just search for an airport he's flying from or near and you should have lots of options (and it's all free).
I Passed my skills test for the PPL on Saturday. Just wanted to say thanks for all the great video's you make. You we're the first avaition youtube channel I ever watched. I always had a massive interest in avaition but your videos inspired me to go for it and get my PPL. Keep up the great work.
I love that even though the tower was asking where are you parking. Josh didn't key up and say anything until wheels down. That controller can just wait a second. Thanks as always for sharing these amazing videos with us Josh and blue skys brother 😁
yes third, your the reason I want to be a pilot and I'm learning in civil air patrol, thank you and keep up the great work.
Hey nice, I am joining CAP soon too-in Colorado. Was a little disappointed though because you can’t PIC any of their aircraft or get your license from there (from my understanding at least).
I am already in civil air patrol and I am enjoying it
Greetings from SER-PR-094, fellow CAP members.
This Is the absolute reason why I like to be a pilot. This climb direct to College station this is Beautiful❤️ Keep up the Good work Josh! 👨✈️👨✈️👨✈️
I want to be a pilot too. Just send money!
Nice IFR flight and presentation on in-flight decision making. Talking through the IFR landing procedure with equipment verification and ATC coordination is really helpful. Your way ahead of the airplane. Nice job! An autopilot would help when you’re trying to eat😊
Trim
12:10 Otto Pilot 👨✈️ is in the right seat!
It was nice to meet you in person at sun n fun like I told you, kip up the great work!!! Thanks for all the good info.
12:04 Josh’s best line right there
😁
Got a chance to meet your flying partner in the Mooney for the cross country you did from coast to coast at sun and fun. Nice dude!
Love it! Flew with my Dad over 50 years and breaking out on top of the clouds was my favorite part of flying. Our last trip from 3F4 to STL and return was a lot like this...
Great video following all the AQP guidelines. I have been watching a lot of Dan Gryder and your AQP list. Hopefully this year will be a better year.
I was so stoked he and flightchops’ cfii collaborated on that
You're gonna love your Powerflo system. We did it on our Cherokee and their claims are true.
While I don't have a GA Aircraft, I do want you copilot pillow. 🤣
Hit with a magic wand: "You are Josh's copilot pillow and just as smart!"
We were just in Monroe, La. recently, Janis grew up there!
excellent video . I also use the three strikes rule. Obviously weather is a huge factor but I also I include it for odd things like, forgot my keys, tripped over the landing gear, got a ticket on the way to the airport, left my iPad at home, left my Stratus 2 on the charger at home . ( YES , those have all happened in the past . ) Basically if those start adding up I will call off the flight because I figure I'm having a bad day on the ground and don't want to have a bad day in the air. Probably illogical but it works for me .
No, not illogical: you’re following the imsafe checklist
When I did my commercial cross country to Shreveport, LA (KHYI->KDTN) I too got a direct KCLL after filing the ILEXY departure. Always appreciate the little short cut ATC usually provides. Couldn't agree more with the feeling of going from gloomy world under the overcast to beautiful blue skies above on top. That's why the Instrument Rating is so AWESOME!!
Another great video Josh. I love the way you go about your procedures and call them out loud so they become a hibit everytime you fly.
You probably fly over my house when you take off from San Marcos new subscriber here and I really like your style
Epic video and super cute. Love your professionalism.
Another fantastic video...thank you!
I really appreciate your "thinking out loud" style of videos. Super informative and entertaining 👍. Excellent video editing also. Inspirational stuff!
There are lot " Aviation videos" on UA-cam. Because, it can be a very lucrative buisnees, depending on how many subscribers you have. However, in my humble opinion, none of them as informative, and educational as Matt's. Kudos to him. Wishing him, continuing success.
Another fantastic video thanks Josh. I'm a retired flight instructor/examiner and airline pilot and it's great to see your professionalism throughout.
Nice to see you back in 991
Beautiful flight. I personally love the way you verbalize all your thinking processes.
Always a good day when josh uploads!
Welcome back to Louisiana, one of these days you'll have to let me know before you come so I can take you out for a drink, but maybe not during Covid. New Orleans is a shell of what it once was
I was down there for a trade show about a year after Katrina. Only 2/3rds of the convention center had been fixed. Talk about a shell...and the hits just kept coming, didn't they?
IFR on top is one of the best feelings ever. So many neat and unique views. That out the back camera angle is pretty sweet too. Another great video Josh! Thanks for sharing.
Vfr on top. The effect is great in this video
So beautiful up above the clouds like that. Wow!!
Hey Josh... Great video.. Been watching you for over 10 years and each video makes me a better pilot. Now that I'm pursuing my Instrument Rating, this video was simply perfect. Thanks so much.
Whoa! Check it out! N80991 has IN FLIGHT meals, and not just a bag of peanuts! I love it!
I love your videos man I live in Austin Texas and I want to be a pilot for southwest. I’m 13 and I am currently about to hopefully get my private pilots Permit ✈️✈️❤️

Great to see another video from you and N80991 Josh. Every video I watch, just makes me that much more determined to get my PPL. Reminds me that I have to get 2 shirts from your website. 1 blue to wear on my days off, and 1 white to wear when I finally do my 1st solo flight.
Always enjoy your IFR flights... very informative. Looking forward to the next segment. Fly safe and fly often!
Getting ready for my IFR check ride. Love this video so helpful. Thank you Josh.
I really like the way you plan. I wish I had been home, I probably would have heard you on the scanner. I heard your dad a few months ago and watched him on Flightradar24. IFR to CLL, Wharton if I remember right, VCT, then home. Wow... 200' minimums. Decades ago, before GPS approaches (RNAV was really a radio), I remember minimums (during training) were 500'. Nice flight. I'm headed over to Cockpit Club to see what I've missed
most excellent video . just starting instrument so perfect timing
Thanks for sharing the flight and sharing your thought process along the way. Very helpful commentary.
Loved the flight. I am from New Orleans. Learned to fly in New Orleans. Love MSY. Great job.
Such a great video explaining decision making. It is really helpful for my CFII checkride.
Aviation101 is so smart about decision making. This is what I will do when I become a pilot: refine my craft, always get better.
Im in training about to take my first flight next week. super excited thank you for the video's you actually are the reason I am getting into aviation.
Another good video with great sound. Looking forward to the next video of your installation.
Great decision making Josh. It's always good to be able to adapt once in the air but always having that back up plan ready. Thanks Josh.
Def would had thought you would had went to KNEW lake front for smaller aircraft instead of MSY. Cool vid! I’m about 40 miles from MSY.
Good to challenge oneself with rapid fire communications, keeping the speed up for the heavy iron, multiple runways/taxiways etc. Keeps one on ones toes and improves pilot’s skills not to mention confidence.
Hello, I see very soon you are getting a new Powerflow Exhaust! Great system and very highly recommended. You also my want to look into a Maple Leaf Exhaust Fairing to install with your PF. My friends C172N with his PF and now the fairing sees about 20F decrease in CHT’s with the exhaust fairing installed. Think about it and ask around. PF sells them and so does Maple Leaf out of Canada. Good luck and please tell us what you think of your new exhaust 👍✈️
I’m in a part 141 program and passed my stage of commercial training today and the next stage is instrument. Informative video, thanks.
Great video Josh, I really like the way you talk through you aeronautical decision making.
These are the episodes I absolutely love. This is making me consider cockpit club. Love your work!
Love your decision making, both sensible & logical, I too think 2 hours is more than enough time as this coincides with the endurance of your average bladder especially after that inflight coffee. Another very enjoyable & interesting video. 🤗
Josh this was a good video as always. You explain everything your doing and good camera locations. Look forward to the next video. Thank you.
My favorite aviation UA-cam channel right here. And I watch them all. Excellent work as always Josh!
And I was just thinkin, I haven't seen a Josh vid in a while!!!!!!
I thought he had disappeared in the Bermuda Triangle myself....
vid?
Josh as part of the upgrade will autopilot be installed this time ? Since you graduated from college did you find a job besides beig a CFI ? Great flight & landing . I'm glad you landing safely in The Big Easy ! What does Mudbug mean ?
Josh! Every video of yours is awesome! I started getting interested in aviation and this channel has made that passion grow. Can’t wait to join you in the sky’s!
Another great video Josh!
Oh I miss 80991!
What a beautiful sight. WOW!
I'm pretty sure "Eat Taco" is part of the cruise check-list.
xcellent video Josh and welcome to Louisiana!! Your flight passed just south of my home airport--KOPL. Stop in sometime and you will be treated to some good cajun cuisine!!
Great!
Good stuff. Looking forward to seeing the rest of the series. Let me know when you get home and let's get in the air.
Josh thank you so much for being back on 80991. We really missed you. Loved this video🤛
Suggestion for you. Other vloggers put the route in the description, and I want to suggest you do the same. As a fairly new instrument rated pilot I enjoy loading Foreflight with the routing and following along not only for entertainment but also for learning. Thanks for your videos. I know from experience they take a LOT of time.
Yet another Awesome informative video Josh . Love it keep it going...
Awesome!! First time seeing your videos. I just started training for my PPL out of Austin. I went to San Marcos for school! Cool videos!
Great flight! I really enjoy these videos, thank you!
Next time you fly East make a pitstop in Beaumont and I will bring you some lunch for the next leg!
“Great Flight” you scored on the weather being on your side. “Great Video” ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
You mentioned Power Flow exhausts I smiled to myself because I have their exhaust on my Cherokee 140 Trainer. I love the thing. I hope you will too. This is not a paid spam advert. I just enjoy their product.
just missed you in CDK we stopped by to get a grouper sandwich otw home from sun n fun. Maybe will will actually run into you somewhere. It is amazing how small this big world is sometimes.
Hi! I am cessna 172 pilot i have already flown IFR to New Orleans like a two years ago.
I love this channel. Please post more flying vids
That taco was the biggest risk of the whole flight
Impeccable timing on the vid I just got done with a lesson with foggles and got my 1800wxbrief account setup so I can started deciding if it’s a good day to fly
I enjoyed watching your ifr landing briefing.
You know the drill... ✊ 😁
It’s so cool to think how aviation101 is going to be in the town I live in on Florida hope I get to say hi over Daytona approach
Just FYI, Chenault (KCWF) has a better FBO than Lake Charles.
Very nice.
The flight controllers in LA sound like natives for sure... I love this state.
I absolutely love these videos. I wish I had time to digest all of them. Living vicariously through you til I can get airborne again. I'm sure you have posted this info somewhere, but I'm curious as to how you got your start, and how your flying, and video productions are funded? I love your attention to detail. Please keep these coming. Cheers.
Looking forward to see installation of the Powerflow. I heard some good things about it and I'm very intrested in getting your view. Thanks so much.
Blue Skys and Tailwinds
Man how you doing would love to host or help you in New Orleans you’ve been so helpful to me and I’ve learned so much. Let me know if I can ever aid
At least you brought your right seat auto pilot.
Josh you got fans in ATC haha!
Don’t let Lewdix hear you say the word “float” lol
Amazing video!
ATC getting some UA-cam time. Hehehe...
Hello Aviation 101 from Sydney, Australia.
* thank you for posting this latest vlog
* looks like a busy time, with powerplant work on 991
* the new tail (empennage) camera is 'good'.
* you seemed to fly between the two stratus cloud layers. I'm interested if you predicted that or from local experience/seasonal weather pattern?
Thanks.....for taking us along!

Aero Tacos Decision Making
You re SUPER SHARP dude....(of course you're a CFI?I)
Probably one of the thing why airlines doesn't let pilots eat the same food plate.
Love the new intro!
Love your videos.. When are you coming to Sugar Land?? If you do, let me know. I'm one of the Managers there! Safe flight!!
Gald to see you back in 80991!!!!
Top notch decision making and weighing of all options, risks, and possibilities. Great video as always! I think the biggest risk you introduced was the taco lol
Hey, your radio calls are so clear and understanding of the process. How do the towers handle the new guys?
