That interaction with the lady who let you into her home and broke bread with you is something I keep coming back to and is probably near the top of my favorite moments in this whole series. If there was ever a moment that captured the essence of Mr. Rogers' neighborly kindness, she had it and likely still does

The vibe and kindness of the student population and the people in the neighborhood were huge contributing factors in our willingness to pay out-of-state tuition and send our daughter across the country to attend Pitt. All the people of Pittsburgh who I've interacted during my many visits remind me of Seattle 20 years ago before Amazon came and took over. I hope the student population supports the small businesses in Oakland as they are important contributors to the individuality and liveability of the neighborhood. Merante is an absolute gem. I can't believe how varied the selection was in such a small space. Being from the West Coast, the small Mexican grocery nearby is also greatly appreciated. Now that my daughter is moving out of the dorms into an apartment in South Oakland, she'll be a regular at the small groceries. Great videography!

@@DeanBog i lived in oakland for 3 yrs in the mid nineties, on chesterfield rd by Carlow college. I worked at the Original, while going to the art institute. the guy you interviewed was right. when i was there, there was Kunst bakery, alot of mom and pop stores, some cool record shops all down forbes ave. i visited pittsburgh for the first time since 1997, last year, and went to forbes ave, and it was all verizon stores and shit like that. at least the Original is still kicking, but we opted to hang on the south side most of the time we were there. awesome city though, sometimes i regret leaving!!!!

I'm glad you stopped into Groceria Merante and spoke to Filomena, she is one of the sweetest people I've ever met. A lot of people don't realize (non-local pitt students particularly), that South Oakland was one of Pittsburgh's biggest Italian neighborhoods. Dan Marino, for example.

Dean- thank you for making this! I’m a pastor that works to serve Oakland but I work closely with the South Oakland folks. Seeing Rita and the beans she harvested from Frazier Farms made my heart sing!! She’s a gem. I think you captured really well how much the students profoundly love South Oakland, but also how they’re unsure how to take care of it or show their love. I’ll be sharing this with my colleagues- you have done us quite an honor! Thank you!

You captured a precious vulnerability in human relationships.

Thanks for this... I spent and spend a lot of time in Oakland and I lived in South Oakland for about 5 years. I actually have a lot of old footage from back then if you ever decide to do a follow up (although it's in standard def). I wonder if you could address the fact that NO buildings/homes/apartments ever come up for sale north of the Blvd of the Allies... it's almost like maybe 3-4 people own the all and just sit on them? I peruse Zillow all the time and no luck, just the MEGA apartment complexs sell a few units here and there. The Catherdral is my favorite building in the world... I love how it's just this giant tall beautiful piece of gothic architecture with NO other tall buildings in sight.

Gardening is superb in Pittsburgh even though we don't see much and a long season of the sun. I like gardening here bc i garden on one of Pittsburgh's gentle rolling hills. With the exception of "the drought" that we are now coming out of it rains here all the time. In Texas which I love I had to water my garden 5x's/day. The soil here has the possibility to be great if you unlock the nutrient. Pittsburgh also has a FREE clinic on the Southside that offers medical evaluations and medicines!

Oakland has a special place in my heart as a Pitt alumnus. I think you captured the essence of what makes it so unique, but more importantly the changes it has faced over the years (some destructive, some good). We need to keep this in mind more then ever I feel, especially as Pitt aims to move forward with their "Master Plan" which I fear may just further harm the community of South O. On a more positive note, thank you for your coverage of Schenley Park. Its endless greens in a city of concrete is something magical, and means so very much to the students of Pitt and the residents of the area. People who haven't lived there don't really understand how awesome of a place Schenley is, and how much it comes to mean to you.

It's crazy how divorced from South Oakland CMU students are compared to Pitt students (it seems like every other Pitt student lives in South Oakland). I eventually want to get to know South Oakland more, since I'm pretty familiar with Central Oakland and North Oakland.

If you remember what it used to be like, it's sad in many ways seeing what it has and is becoming and what Pitt has done to it negatively. It's not all negative but alot of it has been.

Really I love Carnegie! It’s such a small neighborhood and is close to absolutely everything, everything is a 30 min drive I swear. It’s not a party town per say but it’s a fun place to live. The Carnegie fireworks are fun, tons of people and families. The only thing is Carnegie is ALWAYS flooded. Washington Ave by aldis and the dollar tree needs more drainage systems, but the best part of Carnegie is they clean the streets, not like other suburbs right on the outside of the city.

I just moved to Carnegie from Lancaster 2 years ago. It's a big change from amish country but I gotta agree I love the quaintness of it. A lot of mom and pop shops to support and I haven't ever felt unsafe and I spend a year and a half walking as transportation!

I lived in Crafton, which was uhm: affordable, and I gotta agree that Carnegie is kinda meh.

These videos are great! Every week there’s a post in the Pittsburgh Moms Connect Facebook group saying her family is moving here for a job and asking where to move to. They may help them make an informed decision. Pittsburgh doesn’t have any clear distinction of best and worst neighborhoods like most cities. It’s a mish mash. I kind of like that and after living here for 5 years it’s grown on me. Anyway, I’m going to share your channel with the group.
Also, you can type the name of the neighborhood into Google and I will show where that’s at. I think you should add this to your videos. It will give people a better visual of where you are.

Love your mini docs! As far as the patreon goes I'd give a few bucks a month to see some segments on recreational activities, abandoned places, night life, and the art scene. Keep it up man!
