Sheesh. My uncle guzzles that Genessee swill and last time we were playing Rummikub he kept getting shitty tiles and yelling, "What am I? Black?!" I couldn't stop laughing.
JerFhilm tell your uncle that I said that he better watch his mouth about making fun of black people, because one day a black person would beat his ass!
@kissmusiclover It's a local/regional brew. These types aren't meant to be nationwide like Miller or Budweiser. There use to be a lot of them back then. I did notice Genesee getting sold at a gas/food store just a few houses away from me here in Toledo though.
@sycoraxrock The real focus of the ad is that a man orders a beer in a Chinese restaurant. The fact that it takes place in a Chinese restaurant is all we really have to know to understand the waiter's questioning over why this man would want the beer in the first place.
this should end with the Chinese dude sitting next to the Big Hat guy, and both of them agree/aglee that Genesee Beer is the best beer ever! (bet the manager would have said that too: That man want Genesee and fortune cookie? Get him best table, plonto!) Ah, can't get it down here in Georgia.
Clearly the man loves his beer, but he knows the Chinese restaurant is not too likely to have pretzels or Beer Nuts on hand (and the only nuts in the place are used for cooking). Still, fortune cookies are a weird thing to eat by themselves. (This from a man who once washed down a brownie with a Heineken - don't ask.)
@infernalphast9 I understand what you say there. I feel today's use of caricaturing people in cartoons often feels very generic and blank when it comes to what made it seem more inspiration back then regardless of how our standards were then.
Genessee's pretty tasty actually - every time I'm in upstate NY I pick some up. But, dude, people in the 50s were like going out of their way to be racist. What the hell does Genessee beer have to do with Chinese people?
I remember this being featured in a compilation of ads animated by CL Hartman. I was looking for this for a long while!
made me like this beer even more
this commercial was not offensive, it was cute.
Does this clazy commercial offend you? Hold on, I call manajah!
This ad has improved my Chinese.
I drank some Chinese beer and it's pretty good if you ask me.
If you think this commercial was racist, then you clazy!

Put on hat, become manager!
Fortune cookies are American. I've been to some Chinese restaurants in other countries and there were no fortune cookies anywhere.
I grew up in western New York, outside Buffalo. Drank the occasional six once glass of Genny as a small boy courtesy of Dad.
What a clazy commercial !!
@txvoltaire: It's Hemlock Lake, not hemlock-laced. It's a lake just outside of Rochester, NY.
"YOU CLAZY? YOU FLIP YOUR LID...?"
@sherriffnoldie It's more a regional brand. I'm sure it's sold all over New York, but I was able to spot it here in Toledo, OH as well.
@txvoltaire Hemlock Lake is the water supply for the City of Rochester, NY, where Genny is brewed.
I noticed they sold Genesee Beer near my house at a few stores!

There is a street in my neighborhood called Genesee! ^_^
genny is the greatest beer EVER

Oh yeah. Absinthe will drive you mad, apparently Genny will just straight kill you
@titaniumnutz2436 PC cannot EXIST in a "free society".
@infernalphast9 I understand what you say there. I feel today's use of caricaturing people in cartoons often feels very generic and blank when it comes to what made it seem more inspiration back then regardless of how our standards were then.
did he say hemlock water?
This commercial is offensive? Well....ME SO SOLLY!!!
My only question is why was a man ordering a bowl full of fortune cookies? It's not like they're too good, and they're not what anyone calls a meal.
Is this beer in mass production? Could be oh so much worse.
Hahaha
Hilarious. Terribly offensive, but hilarious nonetheless.
uuuuh, im pretty sure those fortune cookies are chinese.
Yeah. This was right after the Japanese camps of the 1940s, and most of america was still resentful. It makes sense for the time, but still, WOW.
engrish,slightly racist always funny.
today's standards are idiotic
Id rather it be 2012 or 11 than 2021 though hahaha its even worse today
Made with hemlock-laced water? Isn't what killed Socrates?
Am a kid kids are supposed to not drink beer
America has lost its sence of humor, but dont forget you have the right of free speech!!!!!!!!!
@WpgLwr007 No era aside, it's pretty racist.
I rove it!!!!

Also, American beer SUCKED in the 50s.
