Judging by the ad bumper at the start, it was shown on Associated-Rediffusion I believe - and yes, times were different then, whether we like it or not.
...when I was a kid I wanted a Golliwog... not because I was a racist... because I grew up reading old Enid Blyton books tat belonged to my mother and older sister. :S
Well it's not hard to miss why it' be construed as offensive!! They' look like they're in blackface since they have white lips and happen to be dressed like minstrels would and are playing the jingle in minstrel fashion.
The Camptown Race is a legitimate song & a cartoon of the Black & White Minstrels is OK. Its only those that want to make a racist issue of it are the problem. The Black & White Minstrel show ran on UK TV until the 1970s with a large audience. I'm 57 & there was less racism generally in UK society back in the day than there is now. True there was some but it was in the minority. Now racists are 2 faced & not upfront & open about it like they were back then Racism is alive & well & growing
This is British, right? The "Black and White Minstrel Show" was a long running BBC program that is now seen as an embarrassment despite the fact that it was a hit with viewers as late as 1978!
I believe you. I am not saying everyone who liked the dolls or stories is a racist. I am saying that the gollywogs themselves are crude and insensitive.
@wotnochips That's because the younger generations, which I'm assuming you're from as well, have lived in a society that has largely erased racism, at least on the surface. Most of us grew up in tolerant families who taught equality. If you grew up back then, though, or if your family has kept the wounds or the hatred alive, then you're naturally going to find it offensive. Tried explaining this to some 40-somethings once. Like talking to a wall.
@wotnochips and even when you start to think about it being offensive, it's hard to see what people could pick out of it. All you see are some black currants singing and dancing... surely it's not much different from the current black currant ads?
lol imagine going though a time machine, even being white id be offended by peoples general behavior. and if i wasnt offended they would think i was crazy because id be laughing so hard!
Now this is in bad taste. Not even a cartoon version of a Minstrel Show was considered correct by the 1950s. I doubt that it was distributed widely across the country for obvious reasons.
Im not sure if Id class it as racist. There arent any offensive remarks, nor does it cast black people negatively. I wouldnt be offended if I saw an advert for... Whiteboards or whatever... From a prodominantly black country, showing white people dancing. Id find it rather entertaining really.
Peter Griffin: Now thats good old fashioned family racism! ^_^
Judging by the ad bumper at the start, it was shown on Associated-Rediffusion I believe - and yes, times were different then, whether we like it or not.
Between this commercial and the Black & White Minstrel Show, this theme seems quite popular in the UK back in the day...
They're just going thru a minstrel period.
...when I was a kid I wanted a Golliwog... not because I was a racist... because I grew up reading old Enid Blyton books tat belonged to my mother and older sister. :S
THAT WAS NO LADY, THAT WAS MY *C U R R A N T* GIRLFRIEND
HUFRIFJORFHUOIJRFHUFHUEDE
They actually did that wow

Don't feed the trolls
Unfortunately, The UK didn’t have a civil rights movement...
Duvmasta Good
We never needed one.
0:20 holy crap are you supposed to put that much in? I would have only put half that amount
"Where are the White Currants?"
This is British, right? The "Black and White Minstrel Show" was a long running BBC program that is now seen as an embarrassment despite the fact that it was a hit with viewers as late as 1978!

@MelanieLouM For a second I thought you wrote nick Girrin, would have worked just as well too :D
Why do people think its racist
Gee, I WONDER WHY.
They are blackcurrants. It's a commercial. People should get over themselves. No one got all offended at the singing raisins in the Eighties.
Agreed.
Hahaha! Good one!
You know
when i saw this cartoon
that is all i saw
a cartoon..
it never occured 2 me it was offensive
& 2 be honest
i still see just a cartoon
Hot

Without the context of minstrel shows and blackface, it wouldn't be offensive.

Ooooooooh, bad move Ribena!! lol
Yup that’s blackface alright ☹️
@IEntendu Hardly..
@wotnochips does ribina have alcohol in it?
No
@wotnochips and even when you start to think about it being offensive, it's hard to see what people could pick out of it. All you see are some black currants singing and dancing... surely it's not much different from the current black currant ads?

I don't find that very racist
@MelanieLouM
black face yes but happy black face.
@jakearkinstall...how about the fact that mentioning your mistress as not your wife but 'current' girlfriend has nothing to do with selling juice..
No, mentioning current was referring to Blackcurrant.
What is a/are golliwog/s?
Hahaha!
Now that I know Ribena was racist I will have to stop drinking it. I cannot believe this was ever acceptable.
You can't let something that happened in the 50s before you were born mar your choice of drink.
Look on the bright side . . . At least they ain't singing Rap
Now this is in bad taste. Not even a cartoon version of a Minstrel Show was considered correct by the 1950s. I doubt that it was distributed widely across the country for obvious reasons.
It was a crude racial caricature- a black doll with exaggerated features.
yeah i dont see how this is racist.
Im not sure if Id class it as racist. There arent any offensive remarks, nor does it cast black people negatively. I wouldnt be offended if I saw an advert for... Whiteboards or whatever... From a prodominantly black country, showing white people dancing. Id find it rather entertaining really.
Big deal. The way some people act, you would think that the worst possible thing you could do is offend somebody else.
#racist
Wtf???
@wotnochips thats because you're white
This about as bad as the homosexual PSA commercial in the fifties.
This pisses me off...
Racist.......😑 how DARE they...?
Maddie Adkins those sick fucks! 😤
"Where are the White Currants?"
