The saddest but yet funniest thing about the reserved list is that other card games have absolutely no issue with reprinting cards and succeeding as a hobby. They fail as an investment compared to MtG, but they're better as a hobby.
Pokemon is more succeful as an investment. Mostly while being worse as a hobby since the gameplay is overall agreed to be pretty bad. And ultimatly the reserved list is the byproduct of a very particular moment in MTG following the release of chronicles, with magic still being amongst the top (if not the top) card game in terms of gameplay. Given, expensive if you want to go and stay competitive. But in part that just circles back to how much people value it as a hobby.
Speaking as an entrenched Magic player, this was equal parts delightful and surreal. It's great to see people simply enjoy the cards as pieces of art... and bizarre to see the utter lack of recognition and familiarity of some early icons. In all, this was a lot of fun. Thank you for it; I'm glad the algorithm pointed me to it.
As a mtg player this video is already hilarious like 5 minutes in. magic as Ph.D. Richard Garfield intended. Good ol' revised. Also good ol' dual lands and power nine.
I should note I do it generally quite competitively I'm a cEDH, Canadian Highlander, and legacy player so all these cards are cards I know. Love them 99% are absolutely dogshit.
Thanks to this video I discovered a card I'm going to add to my commander deck lmao, dredge skeletons, the 1 mana 1/1 that regenerates for 1, in a mutate deck it should work fine
A green enchantment with the World supertype that grants *haste?* A counterspell that forces you to tap out all your lands? Man, the design space back then was truly a wild west.
@@IceMetalPunk I still think about the fact they banned Juggernaut in the same ban announcement as black lotus and demonic tutor when they made extended. Wild times.

I had an uncle who passed away before I was born who had a crazy magic collection. I'm talking thousands of revised edition cards. We used to have a box of about ~300 that my cousins and I used to play with at my great aunt's house, before I told her that on of the dual-type land cards (tundra I believe) was worth hundreds on its own. 😂
I actually have a fair amount of Revised Edition cards. I used to have a full set of RE Circles of Protection, but they were lost some years ago when my briefcase full of decks was stolen out of my car. EDIT: I also used to have a Forest that said "Tap to add [G] to your mana pool." It, too, was in that briefcase.
Matpat out here just fulfuilling peoples dreams in retirement. I love you matpat, i cried when you retired, and it was one of the only times I've cried over a celebrity.
Crazy to watch people who don’t know anything about magic open some of the most historically significant cards in the history of trading cards as a hobby. For anyone who wants to see a cool contrast, the Professor over at the Tolarian Community College UA-cam channel opened one of these a while ago but he has been with magic since this set actually came out (it was his first) and knows a lot about the game both in history and modern times. The difference between how two people can enjoy the same cards of the same game is wild to see
Note: Whilst they are tournament legal, they've not been legal in any RCQ or similar "pro league" tournament for a long time. Whilst vintage, commander, and oathbreaker (Well, for Oathbreaker just Demonic Tutor, not Sol Ring; plus in Vintage they're both restricted) are all official formats and you *can* run WotC-sanctioned tournaments with them, WotC themselves aren't the ones going around running them. I'd imagine that's where the confusion comes from (especially seeing MtG is kind of unique with *how* many official formats it has)
@@zachariahmerry2396 wotc still runs an eternal weekend every year that has vintage tournaments, including exclusive promos. the european one was just last week actually
Didn’t expect foafy to be a wubby fan but he really outed himself in this lmao Also! With these starter decks any spot in the deck can be a common land, so the lands in the uncommon spot aren’t “uncommon lands” they’re just eating up a spot for an uncommon, and they can be in rare spots too which really sucks
About Play Formats There are A LOT of different formats, but the big competitive formats are: Legacy - You can use any card from any set not on the banlist. Vintage - Basically Legacy, but with a far smaller banlist and if you use modern cards you get laughed at. Modern - Only cards printed/reprinted in 2008 or later. Standard - Only cards printed/reprinted within the last couple years. Draft - You crack packs at the table and take a card and pass the packs around and create a deck on the fly. Note: Cards with silver borders are not allowed in competitive play unless the tournament is explicitly about silver-bordered sets, no matter when they were printed.
9:35 to answer the question that is asked here. Kind of. There are formats where the most powerful cards like sol ring and demonic tutor do see play because magic has lots of formats depending on where the cutoff is for cards being legal and what cards are banned or restricted. you won't really see Sol ring and demonic tutor in an official tournament as the only formats where sol ring and demonic tutor are legal either don't have official tournaments in the case of commander or are so prohibitively expensive as a format that official tournaments are never ran because no one could afford to play the official cards. you might still have unofficial vintage tourneys with proxied cards though.
this was cool to see, two people incredibly unfamiliar with MTG just basking in the vintage stuff. I kinda want you to have an mtg expert on to show off some of the best examples of MTG artwork and artists, craziest cards every printed, that sort of thing. that'd be fun to see! like shaharazad, probably the single most ridiculous card game card ever made. hilarious that it exists, but also completely unsurprisingly banned in literally every single format it can possible be banned in.
I was in middle school when Magic the Gathering came out. You guys make me feel really old. This "Revised" set that you're gushing over was considered trash back then. I've opened hundreds of packs from this era, the best card I saw I think was the "Royal Assassin". I highly recommend you try to learn the game, it was and still is a great pastime for me.
This is just a reminder to me that I need to binge a lot of Foafy videos that I've been meaning to watch... 👀 To be fair, life comes at you fast sometimes and your UA-cam watch time goes waaayy down, but still!
