I don't see why they couldn't have included 2 of each of venusaur, charizard, and blastoise for $400 in the deck for consistancy sake if it's supposed to be playable.
@codeless6648 switch lite is $200, so yeah. Standard switch is $300 and OLED is $350. You could save another $10 and get an OLED and Legends Arceus for the same price +$10 as this set. Not worth it
Wizards of the Coast tried something similar (but worse) for Magics 30th anniversary, 4 booster packs of non-tournament legal reprints of the original set, all for the bargain price of $1000. Pokemon saw them shoot themselves in the foot (with a cannon) and said "That looks fun, we should try that!"
I was going to say, this looks very familiar. However! Pokémon did learn 1 lesson. This at least is something that can be played. It’s not 4 random packs. It’s actual decks! And for under half the cost. Reminds me of the planechase and commander anthologies. Still priced too high.
I’m still mad at the 30th anniversary debacle. Whole playgroup basically went to printing entire commander decks overnight out of spite; if wizards are gonna sell proxies then we’ll run proxies. Between that and the Pinkerton fiasco I basically stopped engaging with it for a year or two. Was only because my gf liked the look of Bloomburrow that I got back in.
Such BS that all the "vintage" cards aren't even the vintage art. There is no excuse why the gyarados wasn't the original art. I would have considered it if all the pokemon art was the vintage style.
Especially since there was no reason to mismatch them. There's a base set Raichu to go with the Pikachu. Base Set Scyther but not Hitmonchan/Hitmonlee? I could go on and on! And then there are the Trainer cards! That's not the Bill I remember! Why is the card art for the poke ball and Switch different? They could have made all the cards from the old sets but deliberately decided not to. I don't understand why...
@@S0M3O43 Typical Pokemon Company! "This game is so complete!!" turns out to be a broken buggy mess "These deck sets have full deck builds" turns out to not have the full deck in there. Pokemon Company should be investigated for false advertisement!
I got the box a while back and my family and friends think it’s great! especially for someone like me who is getting back into the Pokémon collecting game and had literally no cards from back in my childhood.
400 dollars and they couldnt even get all the cards to be in the same style. Why did they feel the need to mix and match the era of card they were reprinting
I assume it's celebrating the entire history of the game, not just the original 1998-1999 sets. Kinda like how Time Spiral block in Magic did classic reprints for the timeshifted slot, then modern planeshifted cards for Planar Chaos. What I don't understand is why they didn't do red HP text for base set cards. Seems like a huge oversight considering they opened up the template file for EX era, etc. Lol. Could have printed at least one e-Reader card. 😂
@@GiuseppeGaetanoSabatelli Only outside of the 3 EX cards, its the original 151 pokemon and this was obviously meant to be attractive towards gen one-ners nostalgia.
@@TheMightySceptile: Exactly, with how it was marketed, this collection should have limited itself to just the classic original three sets of Base, Jungle, and Fossil. Maybe also Team Rocket as a stretch.
The fact that the energies are the only thing tournament legal means that the energies themselves are actually pretty cheap despite looking cool (probably since many people think they're illegal). I bought 8 water and 1 lightning for my chien-pao deck almost a year ago for like 6 bucks total and they're really nice.
I also believe that the trainer cards that are in the current rotation are also legal to use as long as they match the most recent version of that card.
the pokemon TCG official tournaments work on rotating cards ATM only some sword and sheild sets and all scarlet and violet decks are legal in play and since those cards are "old" you would be able to play them since none of those cards are in those sets (the box is expensive for no reason i wish it was cheaper)
@@woodway3782I mean that’s not nessarily true. A lot of the items and trainer are actually legal in rotation. The issue is that the ones that come from this box are illegal, even though they are from current rotation.
@@clickbaitcrill3394 Correct. It is explicitly stated on the card in small print. Foafy also mentioned that the cards feel different, which probably means that they’re made differently.
@@clickbaitcrill3394 its because they are now in play but in the future they wont be, few are legal and most arent, why would they put a mark on some cards and some dont, some didnt even have the mark like the charizard, it would spoil all cards with such mark, so you can use a couple of cards while they still legal, doesnt make sense
The reason why these cards are not tournament legal in case no one else pointed it out, is because old Pokémon cards are hopelessly powercrept, old Trainers are unfathomably broken, and some of them have effects that are the same as cards of different name, so you'd be able to get around the "only 4 copies per deck" rule. For instance, Prof. Juniper and Prof. Sycamore both have the same effect as Professor's Research that's been released since as a way to not have to remember a massive list of cards that can't be played together; "Discard your hand and draw 7 cards". In fact, the rule is strict in that you can't play a Prof. Juniper, a Prof. Sycamore and two Prof. Research to have 4 in total, it's either one or the other. However, for Prof. Research you can have whatever mix you want-they might feature different characters in the artwork but they have the same name. The same goes for Lysandre and Boss Order's cards! Another notable card is Rocket's Admin, it does the same thing as N. N isn't legal in Standard, but he is in Expanded. Then there's Computer Search, which once again has been out of the Standard rotation for years, but is available in Expanded as an ACE SPEC card, which you may only have one in your entire deck. I believe there's a rule somewhere that says the Computer Search released in Black & White counts as an errata and won't allow you to use the old Computer Search as a stand-in for its ACE SPEC version but I'm not sure. As for the rest of the cards like Ultra Ball, Switch, etc., whose text is identical to their current Standard iterations, and as such you could use any reprint of it for cosmetic reasons, I guess they disallowed them just to not make an absolute mess of cards that are legal and others that aren't. Oh also, Double Colorless Energy is literally Double Turbo Energy but better-the latter will give you two colorless energy just the same, but will also nerf your damage by 20. I guess it falls into the category of "old Trainers are unfathomably broken" despite being an energy. Edit: I suppose the metallic marbles are supposed to be stand-ins for coin flips
I don't think anyone expected the vintage cards in the deck to be tournament legal. It's just weird that all the "still in rotation" trainer cards are not tournament legal for an arbitrary reason. Interestingly (if I'm remembering correctly), I believe Andrew Mahone said any relevant reprints would actually be legal for GLC.
@@IdolsHextech Like with most games, the creatures are powercrept, which means they suck compared to current ones, and the trainers are broken which I guess is the opposite of powercreep lol. It's a lot like old Yu-Gi-Oh! Monster Reborn
@@jaynekogames The issue is that these cards lack regulation marks. While older prints of cards without regulation marks, or with illegal regulation marks, are allowed as long as there's a card with the same name and a legal regulation mark in the relevant format, newer prints of cards don't get that same treatment. Since this came out in 2023, that bars it from play. It's an issue of needing precise wording in the rules to avoid ambiguity and prevent unintended consequences.
@VermillionRacing lowest sale price on tcg player is $215 market price $238. None listed below 300. Over here in the UK they are £200+. Japanese are around £250.
Pokemon Company really looked at MTG30, the product that made the entire Magic player base go "Hey, WotC. Fuck you." And then went "That looks like a great idea!"
You know, for a product called "Classic" they sure as hell got a lot of modern-looking cards in the decks. Them looking modern isn't even the problem, it's that they all look different! There's no cohesion! It's like they went to the printers and said "hey yo, print these out with a new holo pattern". You're charging 400 bucks for cardboard and you can't get a designer to make at least the pokémon cards look coherent?
@@zoruasnivythat would have been SO COOL! Those promo new cards in classic style only available in that box would make the box AT LEAST slightly more worth it
as someone who actually DOES enjoy playing the TGC, I vehemently disagree with you on the reason someone would buy this box. I, personally, would buy it for the nice, premium play stuff WAY before the odd selection of reprints. (This video really suprised me, by the way. Why are there random cards from other sets throughout the eras??? that feels like it defeats the purpose. at least make them LOOK classic, dang.)
Honestly, I agree! The premium play accessories (while not for me) are very cool! I imagine they would have a ton of use for players! I could totally see why someone would buy a product that had those features. I just wish those play accessories were available on their own for the people who wanted them. Not land locked to this box that pokemon charged $400 for just because they put a Base Set Charizard in it lol
Yeah, the play accessories are cool, and would love to have them. I wouldn’t want to spend $400 or $100 just to get the accessories. You can easily get the basic accessories for $20 maybe $30 if you want your stuff to be high quality.
The play stuff is definitely quite decent but the deck are inconsistant hot garbage with horrible traîner choice The should have simply sold the play stuff with a few promo and no deck for way less money
Honestly, respect for being honest about what you paid, and how it’s not worth it. A lot of people might try to validate the purchase by hyping it up, or praise it to appeal to nostalgia, or praise it because they’re blinded by loyalty to pokémon as a brand. It’s refreshing to see that you’re objectively looking at this as just a product for $400, and judging it accordingly. While making sure your viewership doesn’t spend money on a lackluster product. On top of letting them know that each part of the set could be found secondhand from online vendors for cheap as an alternative. Thank you very much. It’s very classy, keep up the good work 👍
Foafy is awesome like that! He doesn't shill for Pokemon Company like most poketubers do and he doesn't excuse their bad business practices! He is a TRUE gamer! An honest one! That's one of the reasons I subbed to his channel!
If you collect the cards, then this set is absolutely not worth it. You can buy most of these cards seperately for less than the box itself, minus the gen 1 starters which those in a holo will be a bit more expensive. But, if you play yhe game recreationally, this set is honestly really fun and nice to use. The roulette wheel is a coin flipper, and the damage and status condition indicators are sturdy and mayne ceramic, but im not sure. That being said I bought mine for 150 bucks on sale, its not worth 400 dollars lol.
It’s not even worth buying it to store cards and store your tournament decks. I can get a magnet deck box, a play mat, counters and coins for less then $20.
Lowest I could find was about 173 USD and it seems like for that price they might finally actually be selling. I hope this was a huge financial bust for them. It’s such a ridiculous price point for what you’re getting.
some of the promos for actual legal card in the TCG of that set look kinda cool, but 400 just to get them and not be able to play them is dissapointing
Hey so, I just wanna say that I have seen deck boxes just like that for like 6.99 at some local game stores Also yeah as someone who plays the game, stackable damage tokens are actually really cool and I think they should sell them outside of this box
It's almost canon that any TCG company will one day bring out a product that supposedly makes the most high-value and spught after cards available for the normal public, but then completely fuck it up by making it ridiculously expensive (*cough* MTG's 30th aniversary edition *cough*)
This is definitely a product meant for people who actually play the game. If you’re getting it just for the cards, then you’re not the target audience. At $400 it’s definitely still way overpriced, but what it’s meant to be is a premium Pokemon tcg experience. And it does exactly that. As someone who actually plays the game, I would consider buying it for $200 maximum but not a penny more. A way more reasonable price I think would be around $150. Still expensive, but for a premium product not outrageously so.
@Azaelris yeah. The decks they have are meant to be isolated to this experience. If you tried to use those decks and cards, they are way underpowered and would get steam rolled in any modern tournament. There’s been so much power creep in the tcg and these are kind of “un-powercrept”. But if you’re buying this thing anyways, you’re not buying it for the cards. It’s meant to be just a premium way to play the game, so you have the option to use your own decks. As I see it those decks are just placeholders and should not be the main selling point of the product.
"Classic" but it mixes up several cards from different eras and sets...how tf is this classic?? What were they thinking? If they wanted to give people a classic experience, why didn't they just use cards from Base Set/Jungle/Fossil? They really thought they were gonna charge people $400 for a product that was confusingly designed and make sales huh
Hey! I hope you don't mind me asking a question: have you done something special for not getting nuked with "for kids" in your videos? I know Maxmoefoe opened toys and cards, but the system would put the videos as "for kids" and mess with the algorithm and monetization, and I just curious if you've done anything to not have your channel have the same faith
@@Bg2006 Seconded! My unboxing alt CONSTANTLY has shorts labeled as "For Kids" and has comments locked despite the fact that I purposely click "Not for Kids" every time I upload.
I've been saying Pokémon should follow what Konami is doing and release booster boxes of older sets. Not just the base set, move into the ex era with dragon frontiers, holon phantoms, unseen forces.
"The only reason someone would pay $400 for this is for the cards" Actullay when I saw the ads for this thing I only wanted it for the playmat, I didn't know it would end up being $400
This is a very cool product... but it's too much fricken money. I almost got it because the idea of playing it with friends seemed appealing, but then if I got it for $400, I probably wouldn't want to play with it. I could maybe do it for like $150?
i'm from australia, i work retail in a store that sells tcg. we have 4 of them for so long and because of conversion i guess, it's $800... we could not get rid of them
I was expecting three decks made of "base set" cards, or at most of cards from early expansions, so discovering that the "classic" premium product had so many "non-classic" cards disrupted my interest (the price, yeah, it did as well)... moreover, to play a deck with so eterogeneous card design would put such a discomfort in me, really... it reminds me of those fake prints with random cards and holo all over the place
...The fact there's no moltres in this set...Just...*Really* pisses me off for some reason. And that the EX legendaries aren't any of the trip legends, it bothers me so much
I know a LOT of people who would happily throw $400 at a reprint collection of the original Base, Jungle, Fossil and Rocket sets. That fits well with $100 per set. Don't even make them playable decks (that aren't tournament legal anyway, lmao), just reprint the sets. I'd be so mad paying $400 for this box that was advertised as a "vintage collection", and then find out that there are like a dozen cards that are actually vintage 😂
I managed to get a box for around $200. I bought it mainly because I love to play the TCG. To be able to play cards from nearly every generation and have them work together well is very cool. The decks are very fun to play against each other, and offer a unique and completely different style of play from current standard format. The board and bits n bobs have a very premium feel and do enhance the game experience. Having said that, I would not have bought it at full price, but for what i did pay, I feel its worth it
The fact that my local gaming cafe actually has the accessories like the counters and the playmat, but is selling them separately as unpacked individual products, speaks volumes about how extortionate this set is. And as for the marble thing in the middle, I'm guessing it's meant to be like an over elaborate replacement for the coin-flip mechanic, so 2 holes for the marble are Heads and the others are Tails?
I like the Japanese version a little bit more because the borders on EVERY card are holo too. I don’t get why English decided to make only some of the borders holo.
Cool decks not worth $400,or the $250 you paid for it. since its only 3 decks (that you can't play in tournaments), a playmat, and tokens. I think a fair price would be around $100.
Its for the love of the TCG, not an investment. So many people who buy packs at the store probably have no idea how to even play the game. Its a complete love letter to iconic decks and a history of the game
It’s the dumb playboard the cost of production. The cards individually will spike in value one day and people will buy them for more than the product was originally sold. The 400 dollar or whatever price will seem like a steal. I’ve seen this on horrible pokemon products in the past. Remember when no one wanted pokemon topps trading cards.
I knew it was gonna be bad from the commercial, but I didn't know it was going to be THIS bad. Pay $400 for like 24 pokemon. I hate how they didn't stick to the wizards of the coast era cards. The only good card in the set is Mr.Mime lol
if i had gotten this as a collector waiting the decks i started the game with i would be so mad to see so much of the deck being newer reprints and not the og bills, staryu ect
>sold as “tcg classic” >not proper reprints of original cards with original effects and stats >not even consistent vintage based cards >msrp of 400usd dawg what is this, like just buy evolutions cards
7:46 this device is called a plookey..... At least that's what I call it! It's for flipping coins in marble form..... Roll a marble in, and the plookey will decide the outcome. Like a dice tower for marbles. They come in different forms. This is a single marble design, with multiple outcomes.... Others, you put multiple marbles in at once, and the first marble to come out is the chosen one (different coloured marbles for the different options) I've always had a fascination with them 😜 Ps. You're wrong, I DO wanna see that stuff, I clearly know shit about them lol
Who the hell was this product for? Is it for competitive players? No, because the cards aren't legal, unless you want the fancy accessories. Is it for casual players? Not really, these decks kinda suck. It's like they built them with both the modern mindset of "focus on a select few Pokemon and then a lot of really powerful supporting Trainers" _and_ the childhood mindset of "add a bunch of different Pokemon lines to have a lot of different options", so you have a whole bunch of different lines going on but there's only 1-2 copies of each, making most of the decks boring clutches of Trainer cards and random inconsistent evolution lines. Most of the Trainers are the same between each deck, so the decks don't even play differently. So these don't make a fun "battle box" for casual players. Is it for collectors? Why do collectors want a completely random set of cards vaguely connected by the Kanto starters? None of the cards in these decks are particularly valuable or desirable. You're calling this a collector's product but half the product is Pokeballs, Ultra Balls, and Vs Seekers? Is it for nostalgia babies who only care about the first three sets? No! Because only about 15 cards have that old nostalgic look to them! While most of the Pokemon are Kanto-native, the visual style of all these cards ranges across the game's visual history, so they don't even feel nostalgic unless you are specifically nostalgic for the _whole_ history of the game. It doesn't look like a cohesive, evocative product, it looks like a chaotic mess of random cards. And that's not even considering the random inclusion of some ex cards, absolutely not the kind of thing a nostalgic player is going to want. I can't think of a single group of customer this product satisfies unless you count "person who wants to spend money on Pokemon product" as a group.
the reason lugia is colorless is because the flying type is usually depicted as colorless. You can attach any kind of energy to use as colorless, which is why it works in a grass and fighting deck
As a new TCG collector looking to expand my collection I'm glad I never thought about buying this set, my gut told me it was a waste of time and money so I'm glad my suspicions were correct. Booster packs FTW!
So let me get this straight? For $400, Nintendo gave you: - 3 decks - That you absolutely cannot use in official tournaments (except for the energies) - Containing only *some* cards from the Red/Blue era (base/jungle/fossil) - The rest seemed like a purely random selection of monsters, like a kid who just took every card they happened to have and call it a deck - Only one (1) copy of every monster that wasn't a pre-evolution of the big 3 - A few EX monster that would be re-released later anyway - Needlessly overdesigned playmat/deckboxes/counters/etc. And Nintendo wanted *400 dollars* for this? When I first saw the commercial for it I was like "Man, it's probably gonna have some insane price tag like 100 or something". But no. 400 dollars. For cards you can't even use in real play. If they had included only the OG cards, I'd kinda understand. If they'd made them playable, I'd kinda understand. If they'd constructed decks that *actually looked like there was some thought put into them,* I'd kinda understand. Like, I don't play pokemon on the higher levels, but apart from most of the trainers it just seems so random. One Staryu. One Starmie. Not even Doduo and Dodrio from the same set. Like I said, if they'd only included monsters from the OG sets it would make sense for collectors, but as you showed there are only a handful of cards collectors would be interested in. The rest are just holofoils of random monsters from random sets. Is the Charizard even worth anything if you can't play it? The only thing I'd consider buying from this collection are the energies, use them spruce up a deck or two. Four hundred dollars? For this? Really? Nintendo knew exactly what they were doing.
This is a crazy video and a good analysis for the product. I just bought a collection box for my wife and I and I really liked the Lugia ex, Ho-oh ex, and Suicune ex. Yes, the same cards featured here and the box was $40 on sale with 11 booster packs. Also, those scarlet/violet item cards (scorching charcoal, etc.) are just normal common pulls. If I would've dropped even $150 on this, I would have felt scammed. Knowing that this went for $400 is wild. I really love the re-prints for some of the cards like Charizard, Blastoise, and Venusaur but I just don't feel like it justifies that price point at all.
companies really forget the vital lesson from Pawn Stars: Collector Items aren't collectible because everyone collects them also for 400 bucks i would rather buy a bunch of KitchenAid stuff
the switch card is from Base SV or Paldean Fates and the ultra ball is from Brilliant stars. I bought the Lugia ex jumbo card box and it's pretty good as I have a water deck that is all about the plus damage for every water energy.
I wish they’d just do what they did with Evolutions again and reprint an old base set with additions for the new gimicks. I’d love to see a full reprint of Neo Genesis, or of exRuby&Sapphire.
Oh so THATS what this thing is, the local game store over here has had this thing on a top shelf, looming over us like a dark monolith that noone dares to touch, now i know why nobody has, this things not worth it. I think this thing could have been 2 products, the classic deck collection & the playfield ( honestly i want that more than the cards lol)
Yea its really unfortunate how bad this product ended up being, when it was announced it was a very cool box set, that pretty much was meant to be board game version of the tcg, but then found out how outrageous the price was drove most interest away
3 Premium Vintage Pokemon decks - $400 Cardfight Vanguard Premium decks COMPLETE - $60 per deck I could get 6 complete Vanguard Premium decks for less than the price of this Pokemon ripoff collection...and Vanguard has a better playerbase too as I've experienced it! And Vanguard first released in late 2011
>Not Tournament Legal >Makes changes to certain cards to make them more balanced and in-line with the game in it's modern state. PICK. ONE. You can't release a nostalgia product and advertise it as such whilst invariably altering it to be a modern-day game product. Absolutely everyone who did buy into this would expect the Blastoise Deck to be a horrifically busted Rain Dance mill-machine stuffed with Professor Oak, Bill, and Energy Retrieval and absolutely expect it to work that way. God no wonder nobody liked this thing, not only is it overpriced, it insults the exact demographic it was aiming for!
You are mistaken when it comes to the silver borders only being in Scarlet and Violet/modern cards. There’s been silver borders for English cards LONG before S&V, think EX Era Base baby, lol. They were just reserved for the big boys of the set.
"pokemon - the full* dex" might be a nice idea the first printing of every pokemon reprinted with a special foiling or something. they could probably split it up by generation and throw in some slightly themed binder / binder pages or something, charge the same price as for this and it would fly of the shelves
Treated myself for Christmas and bought the discounted one from my local card shop. $235. I would've like to only have paid $200, but I think it wasnt a terrible deal. The cards are amazing!
Me and my fiancé got this product at our local store for £200. As someone who plays the TCG game it's a fantastic way to play the classic cards in a modern format. However, if you're someone who buys just to collect the cards / or to sell the cards individually I don't believe it's worth the investment.
When this was first announced I saw it as a premium board game rather than an actual addition to the tcg lineup made for people to have a game with their family and remember the base set cards... But these aren't even base set reprints. And it's $400. Ain't nobody's family spending $400 on an inaccurate board game version of the pokemon tcg when Battle Academy sets are *right there.* Hell, you can get two competitively viable standard decks *including* card sleeves and deck boxes for $400 and you'd *still* have money left over. The trainer decks they released makes it easier than ever too.
This bundle should've been separated into 3 variants, those being Cards only, Accessories only, and Bundle. Of course the prices would be lowered, but they would've sold it better.
Its kind of a good thing, yu-gi-oh done cheap reprints and now like the fan market for "rares" are cheap and oversaturated. The classic pokemon cards are exactly collectables with value, theyre not even good competitively in the modern game
To kind of nail it home: I spent $50 on my base set Blastoise, and $30 on my Venusaur. Charizard is about a $200 card. You could buy original copies of those three cards, the big ticket, eye-grabbing reprints in this box, and still have over $100 to spare. Of course there's a difference between collectors and players, but if you want to play vintage cards in a casual setting (how you would be playing this box set), you'd be just as well off printing proxies on card stock anyway.
I can see the vintage pokemon cards not being legal, but all the trainer cards (Excluding oak) not being legal just feels ridiculous. Pokeball, ultra ball, boss' orders, etc are all common staples that could easily be legal.
I won one of LeonHart’s giveaways which was featuring this item here, and as cool and an honor it was to have gotten the most expensive product the Pokemon Company had released, I personally don’t play the game myself, I just collect. I eventually sold mine, which I didn’t feel too bad about. Still an interesting choice of a product, especially for the price.
I was almost willing to pay for this at retail when it was first announced. But then I read the description that the cards were not tournament legal. Pokemon really did pull a MTG 30th Anniversary.
Heya! Just a heads up, you can distinguish Sun and Moon from Sword and Shield by looking at their stage slot (ex. Basic, Stage 1). Sun and Moon have more rigid, sharp slots while Sword and Shield has more rounded slots.
i got it last year around christmas for around 250€. it was a great way for me to teach my non-tcg player friends to get into the game. ofc it is severely overpriced, but it was worth it for me personally :)
*Laughs in Celebrations Ultra Premium Collection* I don't know why TPC/Nintendo does this. It's already a high price, gets sold to scalpers usually from a distributor or a big store like Wallmart itself, then is treated like an "investment" jacking up the price further. TPC is looking at the scalped price of their products and making that MSRP without realizing the only reasons the second hand price is so high is cuz "insider trading" and artificial scarcity of the product is inflating the price to oblivion.
The mishmash of all the different card styles is such a turn off for a product like this. These should all have been Base Set reprints and it should have a rulebook with the rules of that era with a disclaimer clarifying these are old rules, yada yada. As is it feels like all over the place
According to TCGPlayer, it would cost 142 dollars for all the cards in the Charizard deck with the titular card being more than two-thirds of that cost, all the Blastoise deck cards for 58 dollars, and all the Venusaur deck cards for only 47 dollars. That means that assuming you buy everything at asking price with no discounts, you can get one of each of those cards for 247 dollars. The only thing that makes it more than that is you get multiple of some cards which you can then sell. I would say it's worth more unopened but considering nobody is trampling each other to buy it... yeah.
It was so painful hearing him claim I don't care about the premium game accessories after having said he doesn't play the game. 😭 IDGAF if the cards are reprints of older cards. I want those premium accessories! (I'll take them off your hands if you don't want 'em, Foafy. =3)
I bought this on sale about the same price as you. I was eyeing the product for the practical elements the counters and play area. The proxy decks for me are just fun extras for casual games. I don’t regret spending about 250 but I agree it’s not worth 400. I would only pay full price if the cards were tournament legal.
You are mistaken when it comes to the silver borders only being in Scarlet and Violet/modern cards. There’s been silver borders for English cards LONG before S&V, this EX Base era baby, lol. They were just reserved for the big boy hits of the set.
What I don’t like about the product is how Suicune, Ho-oh, and Lugia ex are brand new ex cards you can’t use at all. The Suicune would be so good in standard. It shouldn’t be $400
Now watching further and seeing so many more modern era cards... definitely not worth $400. I really thought the gimmick was "Hey! Look at all these cards from the original run when you were a kid!" But it seems more like "Here's a few retro cards, and whatever else we could fill in..."
I saw this sitting around at GameStop and severely misunderstood what they were. I assumed it was a reprint of the entire first line of cards. Seeing how many of em are just modern cards instead makes it feel like so much more of a waste lol
They are very pretty, I love the look and nostalgia factor. But the cost is way too high. Yugioh’s Duel Devastator box is honestly to me this concept done well. Meta cards usable in tournament play in beautiful holo form. Some people complain about the price, but $80 is a hell of a lot cheaper than the $400 for this. I’m sure people would happily pay for holo versions of the decks that won worlds this year. But they insist on making people pull from packs because they gotta make that money.

My friend got all the game mat stuff like 30 bucks on Ebay, which was the only thing we really wanted from this thing.
Why didn't they make all the cards the same style, i dont play but i work in a card shop and one thing most of the people that buy from us always say is they want there decks to match
I don't see why they couldn't have included 2 of each of venusaur, charizard, and blastoise for $400 in the deck for consistancy sake if it's supposed to be playable.
@@march1392 you can have 4 of each in a standard deck.
$400 and they couldn't spare a second starter. Embarrassing really.
400 dollars could buy you a new Nintendo switch and legends arceus
Much better value imo
410 could get you a Switch OLED and Legends Arceus, which makes those who mainly play in Handheld mode more happy so even more stupidly overpriced
Or a switch lite and most pokemon games on switch
If you got the lite version wouldn't it be about 150$? So you got extra 250$ to buy 1 of each pokemon switch games (not counting spin offs and dlc)
@@deifiedtitaneven bloomburrow couldnt save my own interest. The games om a downward spiral
Meanwhile the GOATED Yugioh 30th anniversary box is in the corner laughing
@@tefnutofhoney2832 Just because you stopped or disliked a game doesn't mean it's on a "downward spiral"
Such BS that all the "vintage" cards aren't even the vintage art. There is no excuse why the gyarados wasn't the original art. I would have considered it if all the pokemon art was the vintage style.
When i saw this product i thought itd be like, solely classic base set cards. Seeing a mismatch of different gen prints is... odd
Personally, it pisses me off with how it was marketed, and my old doesn't like it either
Honestly? False advertizing in my eyes
It's false advertisement! Pokemon Company should be ashamed of themselves!!
@@S0M3O43 Typical Pokemon Company! "This game is so complete!!" turns out to be a broken buggy mess "These deck sets have full deck builds" turns out to not have the full deck in there. Pokemon Company should be investigated for false advertisement!
I'd rather get murdered then spend 400 dollars on those decks
A bit extreme but oooookay
I got the box a while back and my family and friends think it’s great! especially for someone like me who is getting back into the Pokémon collecting game and had literally no cards from back in my childhood.
Damn. Hope your life's better then $400 ✊😞
TRUE BUT READ MY COMMENT
@@mariotazit’s almost like the point was to exaggerate his comment.
400 dollars and they couldnt even get all the cards to be in the same style. Why did they feel the need to mix and match the era of card they were reprinting
Seriously, it's such a strange decision. Why would someone buy this if not for a classic tcg experience
Always a good sign, when a set, that explicitly calls itself "Classic" contains barely any classic cards.
Interestingly (if I'm remembering correctly), I believe Andrew Mahone said any relevant reprints would actually be legal for GLC.
or the fact they make 3 exclusive ex cards and also make them non playable
how can it be power creep if they came first? that's the opposite of power creep
The worst thing is that buying the Charizard from this product on the secondary market is still going to cost you at least 80 dollars, AT LEAST.
So, at $250... that's not so bad 🤷🏻♂️
The set has dropped to like $150
@VermillionRacing lowest sale price on tcg player is $215 market price $238. None listed below 300. Over here in the UK they are £200+. Japanese are around £250.
@@deanp847 I literally have multiple saved here for less than $200 USD. From big retailers and eBay.
It'd be more exciting if they took newer cards and ex and made them in the classic style for sure.
@@zoruasnivythat would have been SO COOL! Those promo new cards in classic style only available in that box would make the box AT LEAST slightly more worth it
Bill, Bill, Bill...
sounds like my mail lol
Kinda can't believe they thought anyone, LITERALLY ANYONE, would pay $400 for this.
Feels good, the scalpers finally got a little burnt.
Love the Morpeko profile picture btw
Must say, the new Foafy playmat works really good with the energy on this video lol
as someone who actually DOES enjoy playing the TGC, I vehemently disagree with you on the reason someone would buy this box.
@@foafyp.s video was great👍
@@foafyThey already reprinted base set with the XY generations set, so a reprint isn't really worth much
The play stuff is definitely quite decent but the deck are inconsistant hot garbage with horrible traîner choice
The should have simply sold the play stuff with a few promo and no deck for way less money
The aspect of the cards not being tournament legal doesn’t really matter because cards nowadays are much much better than the ones in this product
some of the trainer cards are tournament legal and staples, so it’s still a bummer
@ I don’t think any cards are staples
some of the promos for actual legal card in the TCG of that set look kinda cool, but 400 just to get them and not be able to play them is dissapointing
@@LachyDachySachy Stuff like Ultra Ball and Boss' Orders are very much staples, hell, even Switch is
Hey so, I just wanna say that I have seen deck boxes just like that for like 6.99 at some local game stores
Also yeah as someone who plays the game, stackable damage tokens are actually really cool and I think they should sell them outside of this box
It's almost canon that any TCG company will one day bring out a product that supposedly makes the most high-value and spught after cards available for the normal public, but then completely fuck it up by making it ridiculously expensive (*cough* MTG's 30th aniversary edition *cough*)
Konami had the stainless steel god cards for about $400
To be fair, MtG 30th is still substantially cheaper than buying a lot of the most sought after cards in that set.
Premium TCG that isn’t tournament legal????
I’m pretty sure he checks a box before uploading the video to youtube
@FormerlySunrizeeven if you check boxes sometimes UA-cam goes “nah it’s for kids”
He talks to the viewers like they’re adults instead of yelling and making a spectacle, I’m guessing the algorithm is just right

"The only reason someone would pay $400 for this is for the cards"
Actullay when I saw the ads for this thing I only wanted it for the playmat, I didn't know it would end up being $400
Yeah. The playmat and accessories are slick and the stackable damage counters are ingenious. I do not care for the cards.
This is a very cool product... but it's too much fricken money. I almost got it because the idea of playing it with friends seemed appealing, but then if I got it for $400, I probably wouldn't want to play with it. I could maybe do it for like $150?
i'm from australia, i work retail in a store that sells tcg. we have 4 of them for so long and because of conversion i guess, it's $800... we could not get rid of them
8:00 I care lol, It's the only interesting thing in the box
I would use it. Looks interesting for palying
Is that supposed to be for coin flips or something lol
The only reason I want it too haha.
What even is it for? If it’s for coin flips I can’t help but feel like that’s a scam- like you can manipulate it to win the coin flip
Apparently it’s a “randomizer” for anyone wanting to know
I was expecting three decks made of "base set" cards, or at most of cards from early expansions, so discovering that the "classic" premium product had so many "non-classic" cards disrupted my interest (the price, yeah, it did as well)... moreover, to play a deck with so eterogeneous card design would put such a discomfort in me, really... it reminds me of those fake prints with random cards and holo all over the place
...The fact there's no moltres in this set...Just...*Really* pisses me off for some reason.
Dude they should do it like yugioh and reprint the og sets. Theyd print money.
This is Pokémon's equivalent of Magic the Gathering's 30th anniversary edition.
Foafy: this is the worst Pokémon Card Product!
Pokémon: this is the worst Pokémon Card Product, *so far* . . .
Frankly, I would rather have the box & the accessories. Too bad they're too damn expensive over where I live.
These cards are crap quality in a crap product, definitely not buying.

7:46 this device is called a plookey..... At least that's what I call it! It's for flipping coins in marble form.....
Roll a marble in, and the plookey will decide the outcome.
Like a dice tower for marbles.
They come in different forms.
This is a single marble design, with multiple outcomes....
Others, you put multiple marbles in at once, and the first marble to come out is the chosen one (different coloured marbles for the different options)
I've always had a fascination with them 😜
Ps.
Remember not a single one of these cards are legal even in expanded and GLC formats.
the reason lugia is colorless is because the flying type is usually depicted as colorless. You can attach any kind of energy to use as colorless, which is why it works in a grass and fighting deck
18:26 they used that onix for pokemon tcg pocket
I'm pretty sure the Poké Ball is also in TCGP
@Draginator it is also in the game and I never noticed until you said it
Yeah, it was part of the Venusaur event they had a few weeks ago.
Sams club sells these for $195
That’s where I got mine!
As a new TCG collector looking to expand my collection I'm glad I never thought about buying this set, my gut told me it was a waste of time and money so I'm glad my suspicions were correct. Booster packs FTW!
So let me get this straight? For $400, Nintendo gave you:
- 3 decks
- That you absolutely cannot use in official tournaments (except for the energies)
- Containing only *some* cards from the Red/Blue era (base/jungle/fossil)
- The rest seemed like a purely random selection of monsters, like a kid who just took every card they happened to have and call it a deck
- Only one (1) copy of every monster that wasn't a pre-evolution of the big 3
- A few EX monster that would be re-released later anyway
- Needlessly overdesigned playmat/deckboxes/counters/etc.
I really love the re-prints for some of the cards like Charizard, Blastoise, and Venusaur but I just don't feel like it justifies that price point at all.
companies really forget the vital lesson from Pawn Stars: Collector Items aren't collectible because everyone collects them
also for 400 bucks i would rather buy a bunch of KitchenAid stuff
the switch card is from Base SV or Paldean Fates and the ultra ball is from Brilliant stars.
The ex cards make these decks genuinely unfun to actually play. it just boils down to whoever gets the ex first wins.
I just bought it last week for 150 US dollars, which I think is 💯 worth it
Oh so THATS what this thing is, the local game store over here has had this thing on a top shelf, looming over us like a dark monolith that noone dares to touch, now i know why nobody has, this things not worth it.
3 Premium Vintage Pokemon decks - $400

>Not Tournament Legal
>Makes changes to certain cards to make them more balanced and in-line with the game in it's modern state.
PICK.
"pokemon - the full* dex" might be a nice idea
the first printing of every pokemon reprinted with a special foiling or something.
they could probably split it up by generation and throw in some slightly themed binder / binder pages or something, charge the same price as for this and it would fly of the shelves
NGL it sucks that there are new arts instead of using the classic arts where possible. It'd be much more interesting to see holo versions of OG cards.
I can see myself paying 60-80 for the playmat and sleeves
Its kind of a good thing, yu-gi-oh done cheap reprints and now like the fan market for "rares" are cheap and oversaturated.
The classic pokemon cards are exactly collectables with value, theyre not even good competitively in the modern game
Between this and the magic 30, TCGs making expensive non tournament reprints is so upsetting
To kind of nail it home: I spent $50 on my base set Blastoise, and $30 on my Venusaur. Charizard is about a $200 card. You could buy original copies of those three cards, the big ticket, eye-grabbing reprints in this box, and still have over $100 to spare. Of course there's a difference between collectors and players, but if you want to play vintage cards in a casual setting (how you would be playing this box set), you'd be just as well off printing proxies on card stock anyway.
that mr. mime was a submission for the first ever pokémon tcg card game contest in japan :D
Back in my day we had marbles as damage counters not the stackable cones.
16:00 which box?
Someone please let us know
also curious which one he’s mentioning lol!!!
I think its Combined Powers Premium Collection
@ tyyyyy
The video loaded in french for me, and I was thinking it was just a weird bit you were doing
Its $800 in Australia, which is $500 USD. Its just too much. EB Games recently sold it at half price because they cant sell it either
To be critical, holding onto a box with 180 cards thinking it's empty is pretty bad.
video starts at 23:53
i got it last year around christmas for around 250€. it was a great way for me to teach my non-tcg player friends to get into the game. ofc it is severely overpriced, but it was worth it for me personally :)
*Laughs in Celebrations Ultra Premium Collection*
I don't know why TPC/Nintendo does this.
IDGAF if the cards are reprints of older cards.
It shouldn’t be $400
man, the whole package being borring and monocrome, with barely any detail on the deckboxes... minimalism sucks.
I assumed that the decks were recreations of the original gen 1 decks. I was kinda thrown off seeing Suicune...
Now watching further and seeing so many more modern era cards... definitely not worth $400. I really thought the gimmick was "Hey! Look at all these cards from the original run when you were a kid!" But it seems more like "Here's a few retro cards, and whatever else we could fill in..."
Cool video. Never got to see this product be opened yet. Only question is what is the background music? It sounds horrible and doesn't fit the video.
-400 this is a premium deck! You can use it to play TCG
- cards are unable to be used in torments
Like give me a break
Like if your selling a premium deck set for TCG the bare minimum should be tournament safe
